 Episode 068 - What's the Real Epidemic | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3805

With the recent concern over the Coronavirus outbreak around the world, Don and Derek start to look at health concerns that are closer to home and possibly much more within the control of our citizens. Recent studies have indicated that over 50% of the US population will be considered obese by the year 2030. Additionally, Americans are spending hundreds of billions of dollars on fitness classes, exercise equipment and active apparel with some of the poorest returns for overall activity and health in the world. “The United States leads the world in spending for every segment, including fitness classes ($37 billion), sports and recreation ($58 billion), apparel and footwear ($117 billion), equipment and supplies ($37.5 billion), mindful movement, such as yoga ($10 billion), and related technology ($8.1 billion). And yet, according to the academic journal The Lancet, for all of this spending, we rank 143rd globally for actual participation in physical activity. “ OutsideOnline.comIn Episode 068, the conversation focuses in on solving some of the problems around the epidemic of obesity and the ineffectiveness of current strategies. Is it just about choosing the right diet and exercise, or is it a deeper issue of our mindset around devoting consistent time and energy to living a healthier lifestyle? Until we determine the true causes of poor diet and exercise practices, as well as healthcare concerns, no amount of money will fix the problem. The D&D Fitness Radio podcast is available at the following locations for downloadable audio, including: iTunes – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/d-d-fitness-radio-podcast/id1331724217iHeart Radio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/dd-fitness-radio-28797988/Spreaker.com – https://www.spreaker.com/show/d-and-d-fitness-radios-showYou can reach both Don and Derek at the following locations: Don Saladino: http://www.DonSaladino.com Twitter and Instagram - @DonSaladino YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/donsaladino Derek M.  Episode 067 - Managing the Talent | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3095

Following the recent Super Bowl win by the Kansas City Chiefs, Don and Derek discuss the issue of identifying, nurturing and managing talent within an organization in Episode 067. While people put a lot of emphasis on coaching and strategic decisions within a game, there is no doubt that you have to have the talent to put you in a position to win a championship. When a team is positioning themselves to make a championship run, it involves a lot of off-season deals to bring the right players into the fold. In some cases, it is a longer-term plan that involves drafting the right individuals to fit your scheme or philosophy. But, there is no doubt that you need the horses to win the race.We also discuss the pros and cons of acquiring individuals who may also bring some baggage to the party. The recent documentary on the life and downfall of former New England Patriot, Aaron Hernandez, is an extreme example of drafting someone who was a tremendous talent, but also was saddled with a questionable past. Teams are faced with a lot of information on every player they evaluate, including personality tests and investigative information from their security personnel on every player. Where does a team draw the line even though a player may have the potential to be a public relations nightmare? What can you do to support a player, athlete or celebrity to make sure they follow the right path and make good decisions? These and other questions will be discussed by Don and Derek in great detail in Episode 067.The D&D Fitness Radio podcast is available at the following locations for downloadable audio, including: iTunes – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/d-d-fitness-radio-podcast/id1331724217iHeart Radio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/dd-fitness-radio-28797988/Spreaker.com – https://www.spreaker.com/show/d-and-d-fitness-radios-showYou can reach both Don and Derek at the following locations: Don Saladino: http://www.DonSaladino.com Twitter and Instagram - @DonSaladino YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/donsaladino Derek M.  Episode 066 - Prioritizing Family First | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2182

Recent events have encouraged Don and Derek – in Episode 066 – to discuss their involvement with family and the decisions around how they spend their time. The highly publicized helicopter accident tragedy that occurred in California with Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven other crew and passengers quickly became a time of reflection for many parents. Creating an appropriate work balance is ultimate key to fulfillment. Both Don and Derek enjoy the work that they do, coaching, educating and helping people to achieve their goals. At the same time, they both recognize that quality time with family must be set aside or integrated in a way that enables that balance to be achieved. While all of Don and Derek’s kids are involved in sport, the goal of all of their interactions is to have fun. Sport is an opportunity for bringing family together while avoiding the negative outcomes where parents can sometimes take things far too seriously, impacting the enjoyment of the kids. Once you spend time in an unwise manner, it is impossible to get that time back. One of the big takeaways of this discussion is to value every moment and don’t be afraid to be selfish and spontaneous when it comes to family time together. The D&D Fitness Radio podcast is available at the following locations for downloadable audio, including: iTunes – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/d-d-fitness-radio-podcast/id1331724217https://www.iheart.com/podcast/dd-fitness-radio-28797988/Spreaker.com – https://www.spreaker.com/show/d-and-d-fitness-radios-showYou can reach both Don and Derek at the following locations: Don Saladino: http://www.DonSaladino.com Twitter and Instagram - @DonSaladino YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/donsaladino Derek M.  Episode 065 - Super Speeds and Your Golf Swing | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3106

In Episode 065 of the D&D Fitness Radio Podcast, we meet with Michael Napoleon and Daisy Kenny of Super Speed Golf to talk about how their line of products and services have changed the way golfers approach training their swing. By using a combination of slightly over-weighted and under-weighted golf clubs, Super Speed Golf can elicit higher club head speeds and ultimately, better swing mechanics, for golfers. The variation in stimulus created by the Super Speed Golf clubs results in a faster and more efficient swing, with less overall effort. This concept has also been applied to create higher speed swing velocities in baseball and tennis. The SuperSpeed Golf Training System helps players increase swing speed through a concept called OverSpeedTraining. Coined by the SuperSpeed Team in 2014, OverSpeed Training resets the normal reaction speed of a learned motor pattern to something faster. This works by first reducing the weight of the golf club, therefore allowing the player to create a faster than normal golf swing. The brain “remembers” this faster speed as the training progresses through the three training clubs, which gradually increase in weight. For more information on Super Speed Golf, you can follow them via the links below:Website: https://superspeedgolf.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/superspeedgolf/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/superspeedgolfTwitter: https://twitter.com/superspeedgolfThe D&D Fitness Radio podcast is available at the following locations for downloadable audio, including: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/d-d-fitness-radio-podcast/id1331724217https://www.iheart.com/podcast/966-d-d-fitness-radio-28797988/https://www.spreaker.com/show/d-and-d-fitness-radios-showhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaSE9HujEdTvptQ7rsmKRjghttps://player.fm/series/dd-fitness-radio-podcastYou can reach both Don and Derek at the following locations: Don Saladino: http://www.DonSaladino.com Twitter and Instagram - @DonSaladino YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/donsaladino Derek M.  Episode 064 - Alana Kessler: Deconstructing Game Changing Nutrition | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3766

In Episode 064 of the D&D Fitness Radio Podcast, we introduce nutrition expert, Alana Kessler, to talk with us about the issues presented in the recent Netflix Documentary, “Game Changers.” The documentary was produced by filmmaker James Cameron and discusses the benefits of a plant-based diet over more conventional meat-based diets. The documentary takes the side of plant-based diets and introduces a variety of athletes that have been training and competing as vegans. It also takes a closer look at the impacts of plant- versus meat-based diets on blood composition, sexual function and overall health, with some of these demonstrations creating compelling arguments for switching to plants. We pose some of the issues presented in “Game Changers” to Alana to get her opinion on what is valid and what may be over-simplified. As you can imagine, the answers are not so simple as ‘plant’ is better than ‘meat’. Alana discusses how you enhance and clean up your diet without taking sides in the plant versus meat debate.Alana Kessler, MS, RDN E-RYT is the founder of Be Well by Alana Kessler.  Episode 063 - Don and Derek: Training Intensity and Sleep | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3185

For Episode 063 of the D&D Fitness Radio podcast Don and Derek sit down and have a serious discussion about monitoring their own sleep as an indicator of recovery, training management and overall health and wellness. Using technology that is readily available to consumers, Don and Derek assess their sleep and compare their results against the activities they undertake during a typical week. This, of course, leads to a discussion about the intensity of the work being done in a typical training session. How does training intensity influence the need for more sleep and greater recovery? Can an overly intense training session, particularly late in the day, negatively impact sleep quality over one or several nights? What is high intensity training, truly? These and other questions are discussed in depth by Don and Derek in an attempt to determine how individuals can monitor their sleep and make adjustments to their training, recovery practices and diet to optimize performance and general health. The D&D Fitness Radio podcast is available at the following locations for downloadable audio, including: iTunes – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/d-d-fitness-radio-podcast/id1331724217https://www.iheart.com/podcast/dd-fitness-radio-28797988/Spreaker.com – https://www.spreaker.com/show/d-and-d-fitness-radios-showYou can reach both Don and Derek at the following locations: Don Saladino: http://www.DonSaladino.com Twitter and Instagram - @DonSaladino YouTube - http://www.youtube.com/donsaladino Derek M.
