SMRPodcast #179: Fingerprint Readers, Colors And Camera Gimmicks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:53:59

SMRpodcast #179 is online and ready to download. This week is iPhone 5s and 5c announcement week, and, Terrance Gaines and Allison Sheridan joins the crew to talk Apple. As is usual with the iPhone, the 5s sounds like it will be a fairly awesome device. The enhanced camera just may put the iPhone back on top when it comes to camera phone supremacy. Apple addresses the smartphone entry market with the iPhone 5c, a lower end, but, still pretty decent piece of hardware starting at $99. The 5c is the only device that you will be able to pre-order, so, it will be interesting to see if the combined 5s and 5c can beat 1st weekend sales of the iPhone 5. We talk a bit about the new Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch. Terrance and Robb are both watch snobs, but, are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to the Gear. We poke fun at Molly Woods "review" of the Nokia Lumia 1020, Android Music comes to Android and iOS, and, Microsoft, smartly, decides to release Windows 8.1 to developers via MSDN and Technet. Episode #178 of the SMRpodcast is online and ready for download. This week we've got a Chicken Wings and Beer and Applesauce episode for you as Mr. Rod Simmons is out, but, filling in for Rod this week, Allison Sheridan from the NosillaCast Podcast. There was a lot of tech news over the last week including Microsoft's announcement that it will acquire Nokia for $7.2 billion. We all agree that this was a necessary move for Microsoft but have varying opinions on why MS needed to buy Nokia. The number's tell us that the iPhone is far from being "your mother's phone", however, lately perception and reality don't tell the same story. Robb try's to explain why 79% of malware targeting Android compared to 0.7% targeting iOS is not nearly as bad for Android as it sounds. CBS and Time Warner make up, Verizon buys itself from Vodafone for $130 billion, and, Allison tells her friend to buy a GS3. We've got all this, our picks, and more in episode #178 of the SMRpodcast.  SMRPodcast #177: Got Dunked On | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:26:00

It was a big week in tech and we talked about much of it in episode #177 of the SMRpodcast... Steve Ballmer resigned from Microsoft, but the crew doesn't believe he did as horrible job as many are claiming. BlackBerry is rumored to be contemplating spinning off BlackBerry Messenger, but, it may be too late to take on the likes of WhatsApp Messenger. Photos and pricing of the rumored Nokia RT Tablet have shown up online and Robb and Chris both think that it is too expensive. Rod would stand in line for it if it comes with LTE. 20% of iPhone users played Candy Crush Saga in July, Google looking to buy NFL Ticket, and Chris is kind freaked out by Brain to Brain research.  SMRPodcast #176: The Beef Is Over | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:37:00

The 176th episode of the SMRpodcast is online and ready for download. We've got a full crew for you this week in which the big news was probably the "Great Google Outage"... Several Google services were are out for 5 minutes last Friday including Search and Gmail and there are reports that up to 40% of all internet traffic was disrupted. In other Google news, the company once again blocks Microsoft's YouTube App. The reason this time is that Microsoft didn't build the app in HTML 5. Interestingly, Google doesn't require the iPhone YouTube app be built in HTML 5 nor is it's own app which had a major update this week. OnStar comes to Windows Phone, the next iPhone may come in gold, and Rod's wife ran a triathlon. We've got all this, plus, our picks in episode #176 of the SMRpodcast.  SMRPodcast #175: The Giant Blue Lady | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:29:00

Check out Episode #175 of the SMRpodcast. This week Robb and Chris are joined by Michael Hank Nowlin, a.k.a, BlackBerry Hank, and we talk a lot of BlackBerry. The big news actually came out yesterday when BlackBerry announced a special committee put together to "Explore Strategic Alternatives"... The entire crew is hoping that BlackBerry is able to come back, but know one is holding their breath. One of the major external contributors to the decline of the BlackBerry is the rise of the iPhone which is rumored to come out in it's seventh iteration on September 10th. Microsoft is in the news because investors are suing the company for not telling us that the Surface was selling poorly "soon enough". The company is getting both heat and praise for changing direction on the Xbox One's Kinect as it doesn't have to be on all the time. It isn't clear if there will be an option to buy a unit without the Kinect. Madden 25 Preview is out, Amazon offers cross platform notifications, and Microsoft Points are being done away with. We've got all this, our picks, and more in episode #175 of the SMRpodcast.  SMRPodcast #174: Selectively Cheap | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:35:00

SMRPodcast #174 has been recorded, is online, and ready for download. It was a pretty slow week, but, Rod, Robb, and, Chris manage to find little bit of mobile tech to discuss. The biggest news of the week was the release of the Moto X line of smartphones which hit all carriers simultaneously. The really cool customization options, however, are initially exclusive to AT&T. Microsoft has agreed, after losing a trademark infringement case, to change the name of SkyDrive in the UK because SkyNews, a media company, believes customers get confused because of the similarity of names... Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon, has bought the Washington Post for $250 million. It will be very interesting to see how Bezos moves this print based media company into a digital world... Skype still sucks on Windows Phone, Bing News gets a Windows Phone update, and, BlackBerry market share drops to just 1.1% in the U.S. We've got all this, plus, our picks in episode #174 of the SMRPodcast...  SMRPodcast #173: It’s Your Justifications | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:44:00

SMRpodcast #173 has been recorded, is online, and, ready for download. This week we have a full crew and are joined by Terrance Gaines, a.k.a, BrothaTech. The biggest tech news over the last week came out of Google with its announcement of the new $35 Chrome Cast, Google's Roku/Apple TV-like media streaming HDMI stick which allows you to transfer a Chrome tab from your PC, tablet, or Smartphone to your television. Both Robb and Terrance have ordered theirs... The International Trade Commission’s impending import ban on the iPhone 4 and the iPad 2 starts on Aug. 4th unless the U.S. Trade Representative intercedes. The entire crew thinks that something will happen before the ban goes into action. Nokia is not too happy with Microsoft's support, or lack there of, of applications on the Windows Phone. Nokia VP Bryan Biniak says that even though the company is frequently releasing new phones, every app that somebody wants that is not there, is a missed opportunity for a sale. Chris got a new Lumia 1020 and thinks it is the best camera a smartphone has ever seen, Time Warner called CBS's bluff and blacked out the network for several hours, and Facebook creeps up to within a nickel of it's IPO price.  SMRPodcast #172: Your Truck For A Bicycle | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:35:26

SMRpodcast episode #172 is online and ready for download. This week, for the first time in a long time, we have a full cast... We start the show off with a report of incredibly poor customer service from AT&T. Chris is a huge fan of AT&T, but, is calling them out for the fire drill they are putting his cousin through after convincing him to switch to AT&T from Verizon. Microsoft writes off $900 million worth Microsoft Surface RT inventory in it's quarterly earnings report for the quarter ending June 30th, 2013. Robb's points out the fact that Windows RT never made since to him... Apple also reported earnings for the quarter ending June 30th... iPod sales dropped 32% QoQ. iPad and Mac sales also dropped, however, more iPhones were sold than ever before. 3 new Motorola Droid's are coming... The Motorola Droid Maxx, Ultra, and Mini. Chris questions why the tech media had such an issue with the Xbox One's always listening Connect sensor, but, has virtually no problems with the new Droid's always listening Google Now. Apple's developer site got hacked, Nokia sold more Lumia smartphones than BlackBerry sold BlackBerry phones, and, Flipboard is coming to to the web. After a one week hiatus Chris is back after a beach vacation and Robb is rocking a Nokia Lumia 928 powered by Windows Phone.  SMRPodcast #170: Chicken Wings And Beer Part 12 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:24:00

Episode #170 of the SMRpodcast is online and ready to download. This week Rod is out, so, Chris and Robb hit you with another episode of Chicken Wings and Beer. We come to you with whatever or on our minds in Chicken Wings and Beer episodes and this week's show starts of with Robb going to see "White House Down". For a 2 hour and 17 minute flick that you know exactly how things will end less than 10 minutes in, Robb was fairly entertained. Not a must see, but, worth renting when it comes out on DVD. The vultures are circling BlackBerry headquarters as the death spiral continues. The company reported a fairly substantial miss in its Q1FY2014 results and the stock is down well over 30% and is continuing to fall. The company also announced that it will not be upgrading the BlackBerry PlayBook to BlackBerry 10. In other news, Don Mattrick, former Xbox head, leaves Microsoft to become CEO of Zynga. This is the guy that, at E3, told consumers that had concerns about the always on internet connection which the Xbox 360 used to require, that the Xbox 360 was the device for them. Clearly this wasn't the only reason he left MS, but, is one of the biggest PR kerfuffles we've seen in recent memory. Episode #168 of the SMRPodcast has been recorded, is online, and ready for download. The week we start the show of with a bit of sad news. We heard word that James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano) died of a heart attack at the age of 51 right before we started the show. All three of us are pretty big Sopranos fans. Robb and Chris both saw "Man of Steel" and thought that it was a pretty good movie and definitely worth checking out if you are into action flicks. Microsoft changes their tune on Internet connectivity and DRM in Xbox One games. Chris feels strongly that everyone complaining simply doesn't understand the benefits of the direction MS was trying to move in. Robb and Rod believe that the change in direction removes an objection that could push hard core console gamers to the PlayStation 4. Apple TV gets HBO Go and ESPN, Microsoft is selling the Surface RT for $199 to students, and it doesn't look like Microsoft will be buying Nokia.
