 SMRPodcast #210: It Won’t Fit | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:49:00

SMRpodcast Episode #210 is online and ready for download. We've got a full crew this week and it was our first live stream on Alpha Geek Radio. We kick things off this week with a bit of Microsoft news and their launch of the new Surface Pro 3 tablet/ultrabook. Opinions on this devices range from it being exactly what Microsoft needed to do to Microsoft continuing to display it's complete and utter lack of understanding of what the market wants when it comes to tablets and ultrabooks. AT&T announces plans to buy AT&T for $48.5 billion. The entire crew is a bit against the merger as these mergers in general are great for the companies merging, but leave consumers with less choice, less innovation, and higher prices. The E. U. ruling against Google opens the floodgates for requests for information that is true and accurate to be removed from search engine indexes even though the actual websites being indexed remain online. GoPro Files for a $100 million IPO, YouTube may buy Twitch for $1 billion, and Gmail for Android now saves attachments directly to Google Drive. We've got all this, our picks, and more in Episode #210 of the SMRpodcast.  SMRPodcast #209: Finally Fed Up | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:31:00

SMRpodcast #209 has been recorded, is online, and ready for download.  Rod is on the road this week, but, Chris and Robb are joined by Brent Harmon. The big news of the week was the Oracle vs. Google copyright infringement ruling that came down and said that API's are copyrightable.  Both Robb and Brent both vehemently disagree with the decision and expect that it will be overturned once escalated to the Supreme Court. Microsoft has announced that it will start shipping an $399 variant of the Xbox One that comes without the Kinect.  Chris feels this was a move Microsoft had to make because the $500 entry point on the Xbox One with Kinect consistently pushes next generation console buyers to the PlayStation 4. Google and Motorola may be trying to kill off the feature phone with a new line of Moto devices called the Moto E.  The devices could be priced under $100 unsubsidized.  The Moto E will sport a "dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, dual-SIM slots, 4.3″ display (probably not HD), 5MP rear-facing camera, 4GB of on-onboard storage (expandable with microSD slot), WiFi/3G/Bluetooth, and runs Android 4.4 “Kit Kat.” Chris is thinking about cutting the cord, The Galaxy Note 3 finally got upgraded to Android KitKat, and rumors that Apple is buying Beats for $3.2 billion are running rampant.  We've got all this, our picks, and more in episode #209 of the SMRpodcast.   Show Details Recorded: May 13th, 2014 Published: May 14th, 2014 Duration: 01hr 31min 00sec SUBSCRIBE FOR AUTOMATIC DOWNLOADS Standard RSS DONATE TO THE SHOW Please consider donating to the show, head over to our Patreon Page for more details.  SMRPodcast #208: Under the Weather | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:00

Episode #208 of the SMRpodcast is online and ready for download. It's just a two man show this week with Robb and Rod, as Chris is a bit under the weather. After a bit of talk of how hectic schedules become right before a high school senior graduates, we jump into a bit of tech news starting with Microsoft's announcement of a May 20th event expected to be the release of a a Surface Mini tablet. This is a device that even "Anti Microsoft Robb" is interested in, so long as MS gets the pricing right. Google and Intel have announced that they are releasing a plethora of new ChromeBooks powered by Intel's new Bay Trail Chip. Robb really likes his HP ChromeBook 11, but, admits that it is not a replacement for laptop for higher end users. We discus the merits of a class action law suit which claims that Google's Mobile Application Distribution Agreements which force manufacturers to install multiple Google Apps like Google Voice Search, and Network Location Provider if they want to install popular Google apps like Google Play and YouTube, is anti competitive and creates a monopoly which harms consumers. Google Hangouts will never beat truly cross platform mobile IM clients, McAfee's Chadder really has no shot with out iOS support, and LastPass app sign-on in Android is awesome. We've got all this, our picks, and more in episode #208 of the SMRpodcast.  SMRPodcast #207: Talking Numbers With Allison Sheridan | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:43:00

SMRpodcast episode #207 has been recorded, is online, and ready for download.  Rod Simmons is still on the road, but, we are joined by Brent Harmon and Allison Sheridan from the NosillaCast Podcast. This week we start off with a bit of commentary on the Donald Sterling controversy.  We know it isn't a tech related story, but, we've been known to touch on a social issue or two on the SMRpodcast.... Apple reported quarterly earnings last week.  Analysts continue to be negative on Apple despite the company continuing to make money hand over fist and redefining how profit margin in hardware companies is looked out. Is Google changing gears with Google+? Vic Gundotra is out and it appears that social network that no one really wanted is becoming a platform.  It looks like Google will stop forcing Google+ adoption across all its services regardless if you wanted a Google+ account or not. iTunes has 800 million accounts, the Microsoft acquisition of Nokia is complete, and the Supreme Court will rule on police needing a warrant to search your cell phone.  We've got all this, our picks, and more in episode #207 of the SMRpodcast.  SMRPodcast #206: Welcome Home Brent | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:51:00

SMRpodcast #206 has been recorded, is online, and is ready for download. Rod Simmons is traveling this week, however, Chris and Robb are joined by Terrance Gaines, a.k.a, Brothatech, and, Brent Harmon, who makes his return to the show after about 16 month hiatus. This week we kick the show off with talk about the Aereo Supreme Court. Aereo is the tech start-up that offers local over-the-air broadcasts via the internet by allowing customers to lease a mini HD antenna. The networks are fighting this tooth and nail and the courts ruling could have drastic ramifications to services offered over the internet. Windows Phone 8.1 Preview has been available for about a week and most folks that have taken a look at it believe that it, especially the voice assistant Cortana, is a strong step in the right direction. WhatsApp Messenger reports that it now has over 500 million active users, 50 million of whom have been added since being acquired by Facebook. The entire crew is kind of amazed at the opportunity Microsoft squandered with Skype by not focusing on mobile soon enough. Apple opens OSX Beta to all, Google updates the Hangouts mobile app to version 2.1, and Motorola sings a patent agreement with Microsoft for Android. We've got all this, our picks, and more in episode #206 of the SMRpodcast. Amazon has launched Fire TV, a media streaming box to join the ranks of Roku, Wii, XBOX, Apple TV, Chromecast, TiVo, Slingbox, Belkin TV, smart TVs, and a bunch of other streaming sticks and boxes. Needless to say, Amazon has entered a crowded space with the Fire TV, so it will be interesting to see how the company fairs with its $99 device.   Windows 8.1 Update 1 was released, Gogo increases in-flight WiFi to 70 Mbs, and we stray off into a tangent about window seats and sleeping on planes.  We've got all this, our picks, and more in episode #204 of the SMRpodcast.  SMRPodcast #202: “Real Enterprise Talk” With Mary Jo Foley | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:25:46

Episode #202 of the SMRpodcast has been recorded, is online, and ready for download, and, this week we've got a full crew and are joined by special guest host Mary Jo Foley from All About Microsoft on ZDnet, and Windows Weekly over on the TwiT network. This week we talk a lot of enterprise Microsoft and discuss the move to the cloud that big company in Redmond seems to be making. MS has been pushing SaaS like Office 365 for some time but they are starting to talk about features of their back office servers like SharePoint that will only get the coolest new features in their cloud based solution. It looks like Microsoft Office is finally coming to the iPad, however, its looking like users will need to have an Office 365 account, as, Microsoft simply isn't willing to give Apple 30% of sales of the solution in the App Store. HTC has announced the the second generation HTC One (M8), and, less the gimmicky third camera, sounds like it will an awesome Android device.  The big question is will it be able to compete in a market dominated by Samsung and it's Galaxy S5? Microsoft removes Windows branding from its Azure cloud hosting solution, the Nokia X is in high demand, but, probably not as high as is being reported by Chinese carriers, and we talk a lot about beer...  A whole lot about beer...  We've got all this plus our picks in this episode of the SMRpodcast. Episode #201 of the SMRpodcast has been recorded, is online, and ready for download. Its a full crew this week and we cover lot in this episode. We start the show off with a little TitanFall talk.  Robb, Chris, and Terrance (BrothaTech) played in some epic battles over the weekend and had an absolute blast. Windows XP has an end of life date of April 8th  The entire crew questions why some in the tech press have such a problem with Microsoft telling consumers that XP is well over a decade old and it is time to move on. Google's Sundar Pachai announces Android Wear and a line of Google Smart Watches that will be coming out soon.  Although the Google Watches look infinitely better then the original Galaxy Gear, Watch Snob Robb, is still not buying it. Amazon raises the price of Amazon Prime to $99... The entire crew believes that $99 isn't going to cause mass defections from Prime, but, agree that the next hike will have cost conscious shoppers truly looking at the number of items they buy of Amazon and if the saving are truly worth it. Tesla gets banned from direct sales in New Jersey, Google Drive gets a big price drop, and Amazon is coming out with a set top box / gaming controller.  SMRPodcast #199: Southern Prison Sweatbox Mode | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:36:00

Episode #199 of the SMRpodcast has been recorded, posted online, and is ready for download.  We've got a full crew this week as Rod has returned from the RSA conference. We start this week off if just a bit of home automation talk.  Although Robb tuned Chris and Rod out for much of it, he did install a couple of Nest thermostats since the last show. One of the big news items of the week was Gartner's Tablet report which shows Android in the lead, significantly so, over iOS for the first time.  Apple still makes most on tablets with the iPad, however, the question is will developers start to mover for Android because of the sheer volume of users. Microsoft's Siri/Google Now style virtual assistant "Cortana" is making the rounds.  It looks like Cortana will be able to do more than simply answer questions, but, also make suggestions base on information it gleans from sources like Outlook. BBM adds ads,  Facebook kills desktop versions of Facebook Messenger, and there a heck of a lot of people that seem to have become WhatsApp Messenger users over the last week or so.  We've got all this, our picks, and more in episode #199 of the SMRpodcast.
