SMRPodcast #195: Is Mercury Still Allowed? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:29:00

SMRpodcast Episode #195 has been recorded, posted online, and, is ready for download, and,for the first time this year we have a full crew as Rod has finally taken a hiatus from all of the travel he's been doing lately. There was a lot big tech news over the past week, but, we start the show of with talk of how much data and energy Chris's uses compared to his neighbors. We've come to the conclusion that there is no way Chris is using over 3 Terabytes of data per month, however, when you keep your home's temperature at 73 degrees, you probably use more power than average. Microsoft names Satya Nadella as the new CEO of Microsoft. No on really thinks that this is that big of a deal, but, Chris wonders how much hand holding Nadella will get from Bill Gates. Hours after Chris and Robb wrapped up the show last week, Google announced that it is selling Motorola to Lenovo for $2.91 billion. It looks like Google got out of the handset business to forge a better arrangement with Samsung who will stop loading so much crapware on its Android Devices. Facebook announces Facebook Paper, Microsoft drops the price on the Surface Pro by $400, and Rod installs not one, but, two Nest thermostats in his house. We've got all this, our picks, and more in Episode #195 of the SMRpodcast.  SMRPodcast #194: Chicken Wings And Beer Part 18 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:34:00

Episode #194 of the SMRpodcast has been recorded, is online, and is ready for download.  Rod Simmons is still traveling the world, so, Chris and Robb bring you another episode of Chicken Wings and Beer. Believe it or not, this week we talked a little about BlackBerry...  We didn't say much, but, BlackBerry Stock is up over the last week or so and you can now install install Android apps, .APK files, without having to go through BlackBerry App World in the latest version of BlackBerry 10, 10.2.1. Robb has decided that he isn't a fan of the new TV show Intelligence.  After three shows he's decided that that 1 hour per week it takes to watch the show could be put to much better use.  Chris, although, not completely bought in, still has Intellegence on the DVR list. Microsoft changes the name of SkyDrive to OneDrive.  Apparently a company in Europe has Sky in their name or talk about the sky or something, and a court has decided that it is confusing to customers and Microsoft much change their name. The Mac turns 30, Chris' quest to automate everything that run's on electricity in his house continues, and Rod may decide to stop traveling and do a show in February.  We've got all this, our picks, and more in episode #194 of the SMRpodcast... Episode #193 of the SMRpodcast is online and ready for download. In our first show of 2014 Chris and Robb hit you with a Chicken Wings and Beer episode. We start the show off with a little home automation talk, move on to what's wrong with the XBox One, then, in true Chicken Wings and Beer style, we talk new TV shows, net neutrality, Google buying Nest, and much, much more. We even eventually get around to a couple of picks... We will be trying a few new things with the format of the show this year. More guests, more video, and a lot more community involvement.  SMRPodcast #192: The Hang out | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:39:00

Episode #192 of the SMRpodcast has been recorded, is online, and ready for download. Rod Simmons is out, so Robb, Chris, and, guest host Terrance Gaines, a.k.a., Brothatech, hit you with a Chicken Wings and Beer show to close out 2013. Nielson released its list of US year end numbers for 2013. Facebook is the number one mobile application in the county with over 103 million unique users, and, Google makes a strong showing with with the next 5 apps on the list. Android and iOS dominate the smartphone OS market with 52% and 41% share respectively and everything else share the remaining 7%. Brothatech is rocking the Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watch, and, although there are some things that he likes about the watch, such as the the camera, he says consumers should pass on it until Samsung updates the device. We discuss rumors of an 8-inch Surface RT device coming out. Robb, Chris, and Terrance would be eager to get their hands on it. We also talk about about the rumored Nokia tablet which will run RT. We can't wait until the second season of House of Cards comes out, Beyonce's album release could be industry changing, and no one thinks Instagram's new direct message features are that big of a deal. We've got all this, our picks, and more in episode #192 of the SMRPodcast. We would also like to wish all of our listeners a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!  SMRPodcast #191: Stop Rubbing Yourself | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:36:00

SMRpodcast episode #191 has been recorded, is online, and ready for download. There wasn't any big news at all over the last week so Rod, Robb, and Chris touch on a bit of everything during. We start of with Chris's nightmarish ordeal in dealing with the Microsoft Store. Chris bleeds Microsoft blue, but, all but done with Microsoft when it comes to supporting the Microsoft Store. Rod ponders if any other hardware manufacturer will dictate that they completely control the OS as does Apple iOS. It would be nice if they did, but, no one sees this happening in the foreseeable future. Chris interview's Rod on his plans to implement home automation throughout his home, Robb shivers loudly while freezing in his basement, and Chris's son fails epicly at trying to impersonate Shuan White. We've got all this, our picks, and more in episode #191 of the SMRpodcast.  SMRPodcast #190: Tablet Germs | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:35:00

SMRpodcast episode #190 has been recorded, is online, and ready for download. It was an extremely laid back show this week, as I think the entire crew is still recovering from tryptophan overdose after the Thanksgiving Holiday. There wasn't a lot of tech news over the last week, but, after talking about our dislike of Chittlens (Chitterlings), we did talk a bit about the 60 Minutes interview of Amazon's Jeff Bezos and his dream to deliver packages to your doorstep using autonomous drones. Applebee's is going to start rolling out tablets to each table to allow patrons to quickly enter in their drink and appetizer orders, but, the entire crew is kind of grossed out by it becuause it doesn't seem very sanitary. Time Warner Cable is now offering HBO and 20 more channels starting at $29.99 per month in a new Starter TV with HBO package. The cool this is that you can use this package even if you are a cord cutter and is the cheapest way to get HBO. iOS user buy more stuff online that Android users, Instagram is talking about adding chat features, and Chris's son almost drove over his brand new Lumia 1520. We've got all this, our picks, and more in episode #190 of the SMRpodcast.  SMRPodcast #189: No Surprise Parties! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:38:00

SMRpodcast episode #189 has been recorded, posted online, and is ready for download. We are back to a full crew this when the conversation is dominated by the Xbox One. Jumping right into it, Chris and Robb both think the Xbox One is the best gaming console ever hooked up to a television. The integration with the Connect and the ability to speak to the device are better than advertised. Chris swears by the media integration and says that the Xbox One can serve as the center piece to your family room media, however, it can be just a lot of extra stuff if you, like Robb, only use your Xbox as a gaming console. Rod got Samsung Note 3, but, found a few issues with the device and returned it after after about a week and a half. Robb was able to confirm one issue with the device locking up, but, never experienced the behavior after updating the device with the last OS from Verizon. Rod replaced the Note 3 with a Moto X, but, will return it immediately as the camera leaves much to be desired. Chris, on the other hand, got the new Lumia 1520 Phablet running Windows Phone, and, after only 4 days, has proclaimed it to be the best smartphone he's every had. It's a big phone though... Even bigger than the Note 3. Katie Couric joins Yahoo, Microsoft still struggles with everything marketing related, and, as promised, Chris tells the story of why he hates surprise parties. We've got all this, our picks, and more in Episode #189 of the SMRpodcast.  SMRPodcast #188: Chicken Wings And Beer Part 16 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:40:59

SMRpodcast #188 is online and ready for download. Rod is out this week, so, Robb and Chris hit you with Chicken Wings and Beer, episode 16. We had to start off with a shout out to the Big Fella as he celebrated a birthday this week. He spent his whole day off watching movies, so, needless to say, there was a lot of movie talk this episode. We did manage to talk a little PS4, Samsung Galaxy Gear, Cloud Storage, and Xbox Glass. We also touched on some of the crazy stuff Stephon Elop may do if he becomes CEO of Microsoft. We've got all this, a heck of lot more because it is Chicken Wings and Beer, and our picks in this episode of the SMRpodcast.  SMRPodcast #187: For Real D'o | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:24:00

SMRpodcast episode #187, has been recorded, posted online, and is ready for download. It was a slow week in tech, but that doesn't stop the crew from getting into it. We start off the show with Chris giving us the rundown on his new Dell Venue 8 Pro. This is a full Windows 8.1 tablet that is small and light enough to fit in Chris' front pocket. Chris really like the new Venue 8, but, Robb is kind of bummed that it doesn't have a full USB slot or mini HDMI out. Although not tech related, the crew discusses the Jonathan Martin / Richie Incognito situation with the Miami Dolphins. Although Rookie hazing has been part of the culture of every pro locker room around the county, we all agree this this escalated to something else when it moved into racial slurs and threats against family members. The never ending string of bad news for BlackBerry sees the stock halted from trading in after hours trading Monday as the company announced plans to replace CEO Throsten Heins with John Chen. The stock is at a 5 year low and still has not positively reacted to the introduction of the iPhone or Android 7 years ago. Windows Phone market share continues to rise while iOS and Android remain flat. Gmail has never worked for some folks on MacBreakWeekly so they sync their mail to iCloud, and what is the difference between and iPad Pro and a Microsoft Surface. We got all this, plus, our picks in episode# 187 of the SMRpodcast.  SMRPodcast #186: Ahh Man | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:32:59

SMRpodcast #186 has been recorded, posted online, and is ready for download. It's earnings week for Apple and Nokia, but, we start the show off with why Chris like Pacific RIM and Robb doesn't, followed by the story behind the complete and total destruction of the screen on Chris' Lumia 1020... They don't do the "Jacked Up" segment on ESPN's Sunday Countdown any longer, but, if they did, Chris' poor Windows Phone would be featured. Apple still sells iPhones hand over fist, but, although iPad sales are strong, Android tablet sells are strong as well. Rod ordered a new iPhone 5S directly from Apple and was told that it would ship in roughly three weeks. The next day Rod got a confirmation letting him know that his device has shipped. Rod wonders if shipping times are purposefully exaggerated to make the iPhone look like it is more demand than it actually is, but Robb and Chris both think that Rod shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. Cross platform BBM has crossed the 20 million download mark and is doing amazingly well, however, isn't feature rich enough or cross platform enough (yet) to replace other IM clients on the crew's devices. Chris' 8" Dell Windows 8.1 tablet has shipped, Microsoft's Office 365 passes 2 million subscribers, and Netflix pipe dreams about simultaneous releases of big budget movies to movie theaters and in home streaming. We got all this, our picks, and more in Episode #186 of the SMRPodcast.  SMRPodcast #185: AppleSauce And Tech.mp3 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:36:59

Episode #185 of the SMRpodcast is online and ready for download. Rod Simmons is out this week, but, we are Joined by Allison Sheridan of the NosillaCast podcast, and, Terrance Gaines from BrothaTech.com. This week show was all about the launch announcements. Apple, Nokia, and, even BlackBerry launched products or services this week and the crew discusses all of it. The big news out of Apple was the official announcements of the new iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina display. The iPad Air is a newly designed, full size iPad that weighs only 1 pound. The new iPad Mini now comes with Retina display. Both devices come with Apple's new quad-core A7 chip found in the iPhone 5s. Apple also announced a new MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, and new Mavricks OS that is now free. Nokia announced a couple of new 6 inch Windows Phone Phablets and a Windows RT 8.1 powered 10-inch tablet. Chris is excited about both the high end Lumia 1520 with it's 20 megapixel camera and the mid-range Lumia 1320 with its 5 megapixel camera. Both Robb and Chris, however are less than impressed with $499 Lumia 2520. The specs in this tablet are impressive, but, the cost and continuing confusion about exactly what Windows RT is will make this tablet a tough sell. BlackBerry has finally released BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) for both iOS and Android... Sort of... BBM was downloaded over 10 million times in 24 hours, but, if you didn't already have an account, you, where thrown into a cue to be notified when you can log in. Although it remains to be seen if BBM can gain traction in the already crowed cross platform space, the app itself is actually pretty slick both in form and function. Instagram, Flipboard, and Vine are coming to Windows Phone, Nokia gets BlackBerry 10 like screen screen sharing, and Chris ordered the new Dell 8-inch tablet/PC running Windows 8.1. We've got all this, plus, our picks in episode #185 of the SMRpodcast.  SMRPodcast #184: The Note Has Landed | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:44:00

The 184th episode of the SMRpodcast is online and ready for download. This week we start the show off with tales of Chris' getting back in to heavy weight training. Chris hit is short term goal of 315 lbs on the bench press in just 5 weeks. Robb's Galaxy Note 3 has arrived and he says it is the best Android Phone he's ever owned. It's big, has a beautiful display, and, extremely good battery life. T-Mobile is launching a new unlimited global data plan in over 100 countries. T-Mobile customers will be opted into the program by default and it won't cost them any more than their plans currently cost. The $70 per month plan is so good that Rod see's frequent international travelers picking up the service even if they use another carrier domestically in the U.S. The HTC One Max is receiving poor reviews, the Canadian government may require cable providers to offer unbundled channels, and BlackBerry issues an open letter.  SMRPodcast #183: The Tech Pimp Game | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:29:00

SMRpodcast #183 has been recorded, is online, and is ready for download. This week's episode was fairly laid back show. We start off with a conclusion to the story of how Rod went to battle with his cable provider over a $250 fee that he didn't feel he should have to pay. Nest has a new $129 smoke/carbon dioxide detector. It's a bit pricey for a smoke alarm, but, folks who really want a Nest because of the "cool tech factor" won't mind. There are pretty credible rumors that the iPhone 6 will come with a 4.8 inch display. By the time it comes out it will just be an average sized display, but, significantly larger the the screen. The HTC One Max is coming to Verizon on October 15th, potentially bringing Rod back to Android. Robb has already purchased the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, but, is still going to check it out. Chris bumps heads with the "you need a spot guy" at the gym, HP and Google come out with a new Chrome Book, and Yahoo! has a very familiar looking new email design.  SMRPodcast #182: Do You Have Wi-FI | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:30:00

Episode #182 of the SMRpodcast has been recorded, is online, and ready for download. This episode Mr. Rod Simmons returns from his solid month on the road. There wasn't a lot of tech news over the last 7 days. BlackBerry, in it seemingly never ending litany of bad news, reports a $965 million dollar loss and a 45% sales decline primarily due to lack of interest in the companies new flagship like of BlackBerry 10 devices. Windows Phone, on the other hand, is reported to have nearly reached double digit market share in Europe. Microsoft has also announced that Delta Airlines have ordered 11000 Surface 2 Tablets for pilots. Freedom Pop is offering a $99 Android Smartphone with a free 500 MB data, 500 text message, and 200 minute voice plan. The hardware, however, is over 2 years old and runs Android Gingerbread 2.3, so the big question is if consumers will pick the device up. YouTube is hosting it's own Music Awards Show, Robb rants about smartphone activation fees, and Comcast is charging Rod $249 to install a service he already has.  SMRPodcast #181: Chicken Wings And Beer Part 15 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:12:00

SMRPodcast #181 has been recorded, is online, and ready for download, and, for the second time in as many weeks, Robb and Chris hit your with a Chicken Wings and Beer episode. The big news for the week was Apple absolutely crushing iPhone 5s and 5c estimates selling over 9 million new devices. Robb absolutely called this one stating that the new iPhones would be the best selling smartphones ever. More bad news for BlackBerry as the company wasn't able to release cross platform BBM for Android or iOS this weekend missing their "BBM this summer" promise. The company also announced tentative plans to go private in a $4.7 million, $9 per share buyout from Fairfax Financial Holdings. Microsoft announces the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2 selling for $449 and $849 respectively. Chris is intrigued by the new "blades" accessories but isn't terribly impressed with the specs. Robb believes that, although MS won't do another $900 million write-down, the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, like their predecessors, will be miserable failure. We've got all this, our, picks, and thoughts on a few new TV series in the fall line up, so, check us out and have a listen...
