Episode-1172- Aaron Esch on Urban Logging and Using Rough Cut Timber | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:41

TweetDid you know in the past few decades a entire new industry has been invented, one called urban logging.  Joining us today is Aaron Esch of BarnGeek.com to tell us all about it. Imagine a system where trees in urban and surburban areas can be felled and then milled just a few feet from where they are dropped.  The resulting lumber can then be used on site or in another local area.  In most cases these are trees which need to be removed regardless of their use. With infestations occurring like the ash borer and pine beetle there are many trees that are sick and dying and needing to be replaced, this method is a great way to insure the 20-50 years of time it took to grow them isn’t wasted.  For every tree used this way, a few less need to be cut down in the forest and less “pine farms” need to be planted creating sterile stands of evergreen monoculture. Much of the timber that can be harvested this way is of amazing quality.  Wood that homeowners and homesteaders could never afford to buy via conventional channels.  This is an exciting new way to build and conserve resources at the same time.  Tune in today to learn more.  Episode-1171- The Bright Future of Homesteading in America | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:30:53

TweetIn the 70′s there was a very large back to the land movement that just didn’t last.  Many are calling the current boom in gardening and small livestock keeping something similar, but that is quite short sighted. To begin with the current boom in such things really began about 2006 and was in full swing by 2008, it is now 2013 and things are moving faster then ever.  That is a total of 7 years so far, the 70′s back to the land movement only lasted about half a decade before fading into oblivion. So what is different this time and why is this new multi generational group of homesteaders different and what does the future hold for us.  That is today’s subject. Join Me Today As We Discuss… The 70′s movement was yet another cycle of things that occurred in the 60′s and the 30′s The 30′s were driven by survival and the 70′s by an escape mentality Both movements had some urban components but were mostly rural Today’s homesteaders are working land from 1/10th to 100 acres and more Today’s movement is driven by multiple factors Concern about the future The quality of our food The environmental damage of big agriculture The concerns about GMOs Regaining what was lost in Generations X and Y for everyone A change in the fundamental understanding of wealth An understanding of what is actually “beautiful” A desire to regain control in our lives What will sustain the modern homesteading movement The I can do this almost anywhere mentality The internet and info sharing Opposition will strengthen the movement It is being done BEFORE an economic crisis The problems of modern society are more evident then ever Automation and technology will make doing it easier The biggest reason, it is simply becoming accepted by most people Why I believe almost everyone will do at least a bit of homesteading in coming years What decentralizing even 25% of the food system would mean for society   Resources for Today’s Show… Members Support Brigade 13Skills.com Join Our Forum Buy TSP Silver TSP Gear WalkingToFreedom Western Botanicals – (sponsor of the day) Back Woods Home Magazine – (sponsor of the day) Idiot Woman Claims Keeping Chickens is Insulting to Black Americans – Read the end of the second page of the article.  Episode-1170- Phil Williams on Creating a Profitable Permaculture Business | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:30:17

TweetPhil Williams’ Permaculture Garden In 1997, with one business partner, Phil Williams started and grew a mostly residential landscape construction and maintenance company from $0-$5 million plus in revenue in 8 years. They sold the company in early 2008′ because Phil felt they were riding the housing bubble, but also because he felt the business model was unsustainable. After that Phil went to weatherization trade school and became an energy auditor, building analyst, and a weatherization contractor.  He learned a lot about efficient building and retrofits, but really he just wanted to spend time in his garden. Phil got hooked on permaculture in 2011, and obtained his PDC in 2012, and has been working on his own permaculture design site for the past 2 years. Phil has been documenting the process on his site which is FoodProduction101.com Phil joins us today to discuss how to create a profitable business installing and maintaining permaculture gardens. Join Us As We Discuss… How a permaculture company can out compete a “landscape company” Why the current landscape industry is dying a slow but sure death The major reasons new landscape businesses fail What do really successful landscape companies have in common Some of the biggest challenges in the landscape industry Are existing landscapers aware of permaculture gardens Why landscapers  don’t want to install and maintain edible landscapes The most profitable type of landscape or maintenance work The least profitable type of landscape or maintenance work What types of communities will pay for this type of service Which types of communities typically won’t pay for this type of service How you could sell permaculture to suburban upper income HOA type community Resources for Today’s Show… Members Support Brigade 13Skills.com Join Our Forum TSP Mint TSP Gear WalkingToFreedom The Berkey Guy – (sponsor of the day) Harvest Eating – (sponsor of the day) FoodProduction101.com - Phil’s Website Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1167- Lori and Jeff Haynes on Olla Irrigation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:20:26

TweetLori and Jeff Haynes of Dripping Springs Ollas In 2009 Lori and Jeff Haynes returned to the United States to a town called Dripping Springs, just west of Austin, Texas. After Jeff’s twenty-four year career as a Marine the couple was anxious to get back home to Texas and put down roots. In 2011, Lori founded Dripping Springs OLLAS (DSO) with the mission of making the OLLA (pronounced oi ya) – a natural, geographically appropriate option for irrigation by self-reliant Southwestern gardeners. Lori designed and field tested the Dripping Springs OLLA which are made from Tecate clay per Lori’s specifications. Today Jeff and Lori join us to discuss ollas as a low tech, traditional solution to Texas’ (and other areas) water issues, irrigation reduction and self reliance as well as integration in to your families system of nutritious and nourishing food production.  Episode-1166- The Fundamental Mentality of Modern Survivalism | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:32:31

TweetThanks to the media and Hollywood many people want to often differentiate themselves as preppers or  homesteaders vs. a crazy “survivalist”.   Personally I have a big problem with how the main stream has bastardized the word survivalist and refuse to let them change the meaning of the word. Survivalist is made two parts Survival – The state or fact of continuing to live or exist, typically in spite of an accident, ordeal, or difficult circumstances. Now I simply would as you did you wish to “continue to live or exist” or not? The next part is the suffix ist, that suffix means as follows, “one that performs a (specified) action”. Hence a survivalist is one that performs in a way that they will continue to live in spite of an accident, ordeal or difficult circumstance.  Frankly that sounds like most people I know even if the typical sheeple don’t do this, most of them at least want to continue to exist. So my term I coined  back in 2008, and to my knowledge I was the first to do so is “modern survivalist”, and as I coined the term I get to define it, I do so as follows, Modern Survivalist – a human being who living in modern times is aware of both the risks and resources available to us in the current era who then utilizes said knowledge for the purpose of continuing to live well despite accidents, ordeals or difficult circumstances. Summed up as “living a better life if times get tough, or even if they don’t”.  This resulted in my Modern Survival Philosophy made of 12 Tenets of Living that Better Life in the face of any catastrophe from the personal level to the global level. Today’s show takes those components to a higher level based on the thought process.  Today’s show is both a starting point before the 12 tenets and a continuation after you have absorbed them.  So if you have never been though my 12 tenets before listening to this episode, Here they are on video Here is a podcast about them If you have listened to them, you may want to do so again, after todays show and see the bridge between these two concepts. Join Me Today As I Discuss the Process of Awakening and Empowerment Accept that there are many things to fear in our future Immediately recognize fear as having only one use, awakening Vanquish fear with knowledge and action Prioritize based on order of probability/cost Accept that others don’t want to know what you know yet Define your dreams, yes I am dead serious Build value in both your portfolio and your life Accept that you will never be fully prepared Embrace the life of your grandparents with modern technology Never allow another person to define your questions for you ever again Make lots of friends in your neighborhood, lots of them Begin skill set development, based on your personal interests Accept that you are responsible for your own life and permanent victimhood is a choice Value yourself as much as others value  you, stay alive and happy for others If you must take the lead in your family, just do it, but be nice about it The best way to convince others is by success not incessant evangelism When something goes wrong for someone  you know, be the FIRST responder Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum 13Skills.com Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Mint TSP Gear Sawtooth Tactical – (sponsor of the day) Ready Made Resources – (sponsor of the day) Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1165- Marjory Wildcraft on Using 100% of Slaughtered Livestock | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:10:48

TweetMarjory WIldcraft of Grow Your Own Groceries One of my favorite people on planet earth, Marjory Wildcraft of Growing Your Groceries and Back Yard Food production joins us once again on TSP.  Today Marjory joins us to discuss how we can get best utilization of our livestock when the time for slaughter comes around. As someone that eats a lot of meat I know where my meat comes from.  I try to grow at least some of my own and while I never enjoy taking a life it is the only way meat becomes that wonderful nourishment most of us consume. The thing is though if you are going to kill an animal that you have raised it makes a lot of sense to honor it by fully utilizing all of the resources it contains. While a few of Marjory’s ideas are beyond even what I or for that matter she does it is good to know every use for every part of a slaughtered animal, the abundance we take for granted today of course may not be quite so abundant tomorrow. Join Marjory and I today as we discuss the following list of uses for animal parts after slaughter… Meats Fats Organs Feathers Down Hides and furs Brains (yep) Bones Hooves and skins Adrenal glands Guts Tendons and sinew Eyes (not me but some do it) Stomachs And lucky rabbits feet, LOL Resources for Today’s Show… Members Support Brigade 13Skills.com Join Our Forum TSP Mint TSP Gear WalkingToFreedom Back Woods Home Magazine – (sponsor of the day) Knife Kits – (sponsor of the day) GrowYourOwnGroceries.com/tsp – All TSP Listeners Get 10% off and Free Shipping – MSB MEMBERS DO NOT USE THIS LINK!  – Log into your MSB Account for you own special link and get 25% off and free shipping as part of your MSB Benefits.  Episode-1162- Women of Prepping Series Episode 6 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:13:09

TweetThe real image of a “prepper family”, not what the TV tells us is it? Nicole H. is a Weston A. Price chapter leader and a wanna-be-homesteader. She makes kombucha, kefir, yogurt, cream cheese, sour cream, granola, all bread products, custard, cakes, pies, sauces, etc.. She personally finds it easy to have one year’s worth of food (except fresh things like veggies, eggs, milk, meat, etc) on hand at all times because of the way she cooks. Nichole’s family is planning a move to a homestead/farmette where they will have their own chickens, bees, cows and other animals in the future. Currently they purchase these products (meat, milk, eggs, honey, etc.) from an Amish farmer through a co-op that delivers to their home, which means they very rarely need to go to the store. Her family is also planning to build a permaculture food forest on their new land once they move. Nicole joins us as the 6th batter up in our prepping from the female perspective series, with some nutrition thrown in.  We also discuss how a vision for “prepping” took she and her husband from an adversarial relationship about money to being totally united about finances. David is the founder of SafeToCarry a smart phone application and website combo that his team launched in January to help provide the most up to date information about the 2nd amendment friendly status of a location based on “crowd sourced” data.  They are now offering to partner with local and regional 2A organizations as well. David joins us today to discuss exactly what the SafeToCarry app does and how users can add locations that are both pro and anti second amendment. He also discusses other ways they obtain data on specific locations and regions. Tune in today to learn how you can get this application and more importantly how you can help as part of one of the largest demographics in America today.  Folks there are 55 million gun owners in America, that is about 1 in every 5 Americans.
