TweetSally Fallon CoFounder of the Weston A Price Foundation. Journalist, chef, nutrition researcher, homemaker and community activist, Sally Fallon is the author of Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats. This well-researched, though-provoking guide to traditional foods contains a startling message: Animal fats and cholesterol are not villains but vital factors in the diet, necessary for normal growth, proper function of the brain and nervous system, protection from disease and optimum energy levels. Ms. Fallon’s lifelong interest in the subject of nutrition began in the early 1970s when she read Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston A. Price. Called the “Charles Darwin of Nutrition,” Price traveled the world over studying healthy primitive populations and their diets. The unforgettable photographs contained in his book document the beautiful facial structure and superb physiques of isolated groups consuming only whole, natural foods. Price noted that all of these diets contained a source of good quality animal fat, which provided numerous factors necessary for the full expression of our genetic potential and optimum health. Ms. Fallon applied the principles of the Price research to the feeding of her own children, and proved for herself that a diet rich in animal fats, and containing the protective factors in old fashioned foodstuffs like cod liver oil, liver and eggs, make for sturdy cheerful children with a high immunity to illness. TweetMany Are Actually Terrified of Freedom! I call myself a personal libertarian.  What do I mean by that?  I mean that I simply accept society isn’t ready for some of the changes I have experienced in my life, they are not ready to be responsible for themselves.  Many people do want the governmetn to solve their problems. I have seen it and not just from people living on welfare and off government jobs.  I have had intelligent and fairly successful people look me strait in the eye and say things like, “well if the government isn’t there to pass laws and solve our problems why are they there”.  That is indeed a great question, one we will answer today. We will quickly though move from looking at how things should be to understanding how they are, from there we can determine how we can carve our own piece of libertarianism into our own lives. Some might ask, “is this a survival topic”, I would say indeed.  Firstly, it is a fact that many of us know what lies ahead, many of the things provided by government are going to fail in time, math says it is invertible.  The middle class is being systematically slaughtered.   At some point much of what we take for granted will not be available. When this happens a year of rice, beans and freeze dried food is a great asset but a finite one.  The reality is we all must begin a path to self sufficiency now, not wait for failure and then hope we have enough stuff stored up to make it until things return to normal.  There have been countless shifts in society, stabilization always follows eventually but thing never “return to normal” as that would mean returning to the way they were. There is no philosophy that leads faster to self reliance than libertarianism.  There is no time to wait for others on it either, the time is now, today’s episode discusses my steps to attaining a personal libertarian life. TweetA Happy and Healthy Jersey Cow at the P.A. Bowman Farmstead Mike Haigwood is currently the manager of  the P.A. Bowen Farmstead a mixed species dairy operation run by Sally Fallon.  Sally Fallon (who will be on TSP next week)  is the co-founder of the Weston A. Price Foundation along with nutritionist Mary G. Enig Mike grew up in rural Iowa three generations removed from Agriculture. He had an average childhood but always loved the outdoors.  Fast forward, he graduated 1986, tried college but didn’t like it, quit after one semester then started working. Mike then got a chance to work for a guy who started his own traditional lawn care business as a partner in the company, while short lived it started him down a new path. Mike then started school at Penn State University in 1990, got married and had a son and then graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor in Horticulture. He then moved to Mosurris working in the Kansas City area as a Landscape Designer for a Garden Center Chain. With the birth of his daugher and new concerns for nutrition his awakening began.  So in 1995 they moved back to Iowa started their own businesses lawn care, garden produce but ended up closing the business in 97.  In this short time Mike learned a lot about marketing, or the lack of it! At this point he started homesteading, homeschooling, and following the practices in the book Nourishing Traditions (by Sally Fallon) and began interning in the world of agriculture.  In time that led to “bootlegging raw milk” from their own farm.  While successful they grew tired of the dogma around conventioinal agriculture still present in the Midwest. So in 2009 they decided to move east and pursue alternative farming practices. He and his wife (Barb) met Sally Fallon at a conference in 2010 and asked if she knew anyone that could use a management team for their farm.  Her response was, “send me your resume” and now today the whole family is working on Sally’s Farm P.A.
