TweetKerry Davis of Dark Angel Medical Kerry Davis founder of Dark Angel Medical, has been taking care of people more than half of his adult life. Born and raised in Mississippi, he joined the US Air Force in 1991 and trained as a medic, working in an ER, then moving on to special duty with the only Tac Evac unit in the active USAF.  In that station he was a flight medic and an Aircrew Training instructor. That duty station gave Kerry the opportunity to go to the U.S. Army’s Airborne school and work with Airborne units at Pope AFB and Ft. Bragg.  After leaving North Carolina, he moved to Maxwell AFB, AL, where he instructed several thousand new Air Force officers at Officer Training School’s Medical Readiness Indoctrination Course at Gunter AFB Annex over a two and a half year period. Kerry also taught, during his tenure in the USAF, ACLS, PALS, BCLS and Paramedic Cardiology. During that time he worked as a paramedic and after separation from the Air Force, he completed his training and certification as an RN.  He has now been in the Critical Care and ER field since 2003. He separated from the Reserves in 2007. He is an avid shooter and has instructed with Magpul Dynamics.  Today he is currently an adjunct instructor with SIG Sauer Academy where he teaches weapons manipulation as well as “Bullets and Bandages”. Kerry joins us today to discuss his simplified lightweight medical kits that are designed to do one thing, save lives.  Along with his training program and thoughts on why every prepper needs these skills.  The best part of this interview is it led to quite deep discussions including why “treating the whole patient” is important even in critical care situations. TweetJoel Ryals of Dunetos K-9 Today I am joined by Joel Ryals of Dunetos K-9.  Joel has been on TSP before to discuss how he trains dogs and how dogs can play an important role for the prepper.  While that was a great interview that you can hear at this link, today’s show is far more important. TweetSoapwort is a Highly Useful but Little Known Herb Today I thought we would do a bit of a different type of show.  For those new to herbal healing my 4 shows on “herbal actions” might be helpful.  I will use many words today like alterative and styptic.  When I do I will explain the basics of what they mean but if you really know the 40 primary herbal actions the world of herbal healing become a fascinating science and one we may really depend on some day. TweetThe Hawk Clan Building a Yurt Xavier Hawk is a homesteading volunteer firefighter/EMT who is semi retired  from the not so glamorous world of business consulting. He is also a prepper who has gone from living in suburbia to the rural mountains of Western North Carolina where he and his family are developing their Homestead into a self sufficient Eco Village Neighborhood that hosts skills retreats and workshops. Xavier has kept a bug out bag since the age of 14, led wilderness trips as a guide for Outward Bound and others, teaches and practices primitive wilderness skills, and heads up his county’s CERT team.  He is part of the black jack team that formed CAC and is consulting with other disaster response teams around the nation. TweetBook 4 in the 299 Days Series Glen Tate is the author of the ten-book prepper novel series “299 Days” published by Prepper Press. The books describe an average guy who prepares for, and lives through, a partial collapse of the United States. Glen joins us today to discuss a bit of the plot line for book six in the 299 Days book series. Today we discuss how and ongoing collapse might play out.  We also discuss the potential need for “interim government” in a collapse scenario and what that might be like.  We also talk about Glen’s cool friends project and how it is evolving with folks like James Yeager of Tactical Response, Stewart Rhodes of Oathkeepers and John Willis of SOE Tactical Gear. Glen is a moderator on the TSP forum under the name “Heavy G.” He lives and works in Olympia, Washington where he has a front row seat to the corruption in government. Much like the main character in the series, the author is a forty-something resident of the capitol of Washington State, Olympia, and is a very active prepper. He grew up in the remote logging town of Forks, Washington. “Glen” keeps his identity a secret so he won’t lose his job because, in his line of work, being a prepper and questioning the motives of government is not appreciated. The story line of 299 Days is as follows, In it, the main character, Grant Matson, has a job that allows him to see what’s wrong with government. He realizes he needs to prepare for what’s coming and he does so. His wife, Lisa, is reluctant to prepare because she thinks things are just fine. When the civil unrest and political collapse hit in a dramatic way, it is undeniable that they need to leave their Olympia, Washington home and head to their cabin. But, Lisa is still reluctant; she desperately wants things to remain “normal.” Out at the cabin, a collection of amazing–yet real–people assemble. They create their own community because the government isn’t functioning in their area. They have to work together and, as a community, they manage to achieve some impressive results. Unlike most prepper stories, in 299 Days America suffers a partial collapse. The utilities stay one (due to a spell-binding plot twist) and the government functions in larger cities. People in rural areas still get some food and services from the government, but must increasingly rely on themselves. There are no zombies or cannibalism; 299 Days describes a much more likely partial collapse scenario. Grant’s friends, who work in government, describe how things continue to go down hill in the city and how the government is trying to maintain control. They describe exactly why the government, as big and powerful as it once was, cannot control things. Many in the military and law enforcement step in to stop the bad things; others in the military and law enforcement perpetuate the bad things. After a while out at the cabin, some important visitors arrive and present Grant with a difficult choice. Eventually, the Patriots–the side Grant is on–are forced to take on what’s left of the former government. There is a huge battle. Yet there is an America that has tried to exist since she was founded, an America that lives up to the promises our founders made, and even they didn’t keep.  An America we can create if we choose to.  It is also possibly an America we might have to keep alive some day under another name.  We don’t know the future but we know that we alone are responsible to fulfill the promises of the past. TweetShawn Hipskind and Family I am joined today but the first ever political candidate on TSP.  Shawn Hipskind my long time friend is running for Governor of the State of Arkansas as a Libertarian.  Shawn’s real goal isn’t so much winning but to bring awareness to problems in our political system, how votes are bought and paid for and the concept of zero dollar campaigns. I want to warn some of our audience that today you are likely to hear many things you disagree with.  Specifically on many libertarian issues like the use of force, the war on drugs and gay marriage.  Note that no one is trying to convince you of anything, frankly no one is trying to tell anyone here how to live their lives.  What we are simply asking is that you at least consider some of these concepts in a new light. TweetNicholas “Nick” Burtner of WorkingWithNature.org Nick Burtner is a permaculture practitioner, advocate, consultant, and teacher. After a greater calling in 2011, permaculture found Nick and infused him with an endless passion that has led him to travel many places learning, spreading, and practicing permaculture and natural living and healing ever since. Nick has attended internships at the Permaculture Research Institute of Australia under the leadership of Geoff and Nadia Lawton. He has also obtained a permaculture design certification from Geoff Lawton and Bill Mollison. And he has attended the Earthship Academy for natural and recycled building techniques in Toas, NM under the guidance of Michael Reynolds. After very worthwhile learning, and on the ground experiences, Nick opened Working With Nature Learning, Research, and Healing Center in late 2012. The center has both an urban and a rural demonstration / educational site which offer hands on experiences as well as class room learning. He teaches classes and speaks about permaculture and sustainable living all over Texas and is open to travel for out of town classes and/or consultancies. You can see Nick’s list of permaculture credentials at the Worldwide Permaculture Network Aside from permaculture, sustainability, and ecology related activity, Nick – a Nidan (2nd degree black belt) – teaches Aikido at the Flowing Circle Aikido Center, which currently is only taking private sessions. He is also a big proponent of internal happiness and believes through the training and application of these disciplines people can find their existence more purposeful and meaningful.
