TweetToday is the first of quite a few TSP Classic episodes that will be coming in October.  Consider that this month I have the following events and you will understand why. Oct 3-11 I am in Colorado for vacation and the Self Reliance Expo Oct 15-20 I am running the Urban Permaculture Workshop at our homestead Oct 25-27 I will be in Louisiana for the earth works workshop as a guest instructor That is 18 out of 31 days, so I gotta do it.  But I plan to make it fun, a lot of fun and the shows will have new introductions, the history segments and comments setting the old episodes in current context. TweetOnce you take the red pill, you can’t go back, ever. In the movie the Matrix the hero Neo is offered a choice by his mentor Morpheus, “This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.” The issue is, once you take that red pill and wake up into reality, you can never go back.  It is a fundamental change and the real horrors of the world along with the real beauty will forever be known to you.  While we are not in a world run by machines and used as batteries the metaphor of the movie is quite fitting. Valium – Is The Blue Pill We live in a world where the masses are the tools of the elite, the controls are taxes, debt, consumerism, marketing, leveraged jealously, class warfare and false dichotomy.  Once you see this, it is over, you can’t ever go back, just like Neo, take the red pill and you have made a permanent choice. Then you have something interesting to contend with, the people around you are popping blue pills daily.  Most people hear blue pill and think of viagra, though it wasn’t popular when the story was created.  The most famous blue pill at the time the matrix was written, was, Valium.  Think about that! TweetSide Box Smokers are Extremely Flexible. TweetLast Year’s Abundance Won’t Be Repeated This Year Last year at this time, the wife and I were cutting up so many jalapenos that it took 3 days just to get them all ready for dehydration.  We had taken bag after bag of produce to the local church all summer long as the abundance was more than the two of us could us. Neighbors who had previously shook their heads in slight mockery at our initial set up now shook their heads in awe at an abundance none had ever seen.  Into a rocky, granite ridden ridge top we had done something no one ever thought could be done. Over 1,000 peppers in one harvest from 24 plants, yea we did that.  25 water melons from one 4×10 foot bed, did that too.  Trees rated to only zones 2-5 surviving in rock and granite in zone 7 with 100 degree days, yep, made it happen. Yet as most of you know my wife was happy and unhappy at the same time.  The place was wonderful and she loved it.  Yet the separation from her family was more then she wanted to deal with.  So we made a decision to come to Texas.  Today a new challenge is unfolding in front of us.  Lots of work has been done, the foundation is largely set for next year but this year, well, it has been tough.  Today is about what that has taught me. Today our discussion revolves around the future of TSP Silver Medallions and we have some very exciting news about that. As I said last week there would be news coming out about Mulligan Mint that some parties would spin as extremely negative.  Said news is that Mulligan has filed Chapter 11 reorganizational bankruptcy protection. This doesn’t mean they are out of business, this means they have set up protections under Federal Court so that they can continue operations and put a halt on some very unreasonable legal actions.  This move actually will allow for additional capital into the business along with some other advantages Rob will tell you about today. The key take aways are… Mulligan Mint is still “in business” and is still filling orders You can order with a credit card and get the consumer protections that go with that if you want to Mulligan Mint is currently shipping orders right now, every customer is being taken care of Mulligan is now in a much stronger position then they have been in for some time There will be counter claim actions soon, when you hear why it will shock you Rob has stood though this battle and hasn’t quit fighting and is ready for what comes next I will continue to fight this battle with my friend and hope many of you will as well Special Notice - I do want to make one point public here that I didn’t make on the air.  I have been accused by some people as “doing this for the money” and worse doing so “at the expense of my community”.  Such slander is baseless in the face of the honor I have shown but let me just state this fact. TweetThe Nick and Nick in the title would be Nick Ferguson and Nick Burtner.  The two are joining forces to put together an incredible earth works course.  Today they both join us to discuss the coming course and earthworks and permaculture in general. Nick Burtner of Working With Nature Nicholas Burtner is a permaculture practitioner, advocate, consultant, and teacher. After a greater calling in 2011, permaculture found Nick and infused him with an endless passion that has led him to travel many places learning, spreading, and practicing permaculture and natural living and healing ever since. Nick has attended internships at the Permaculture Research Institute of Australia under the leadership of Geoff and Nadia Lawton as well as obtaining a permaculture design certification from Geoff Lawton and Bill Mollison. He has also attended the Earthship Academy for natural and recycled building techniques in Toas, New Mexico, under the guidance of Michael Reynolds.  After very worthwhile learning and on-the-ground experiences, Nick opened Working With Nature Learning, Research, and Healing Center in late 2012. The center has both an urban and a rural demonstration/educational site which offers hands on experiences as well as class room learning. He teaches classes and speaks about permaculture and sustainable living all over Texas and is open to travel for out of town classes and/or consultancies. You can see Nick’s list of permaculture credentials at the Worldwide Permaculture Network.  His website is WorkingWithNature Nick Ferguson of Permaculture Classroom Nick Ferguson is a passionate and active permaculturist who is currently building his property into a Permaculture school called Permaculture Classroom.  Before earning his PDC and Earthworks Course certification  from Geoff Lawton, Nicholas grew up gardening, and his extended family was heavily into alternative agriculture. His grandfather Jerry Fridenstine was a teacher at many Acres USA conferences and worked closely with icons of sustainability like Charles Walters (Acres USA), Dr. Arden Anderson, Dr. Phil Callahan (Secret of the Ghost Moth), Dr. Reams (soil health & radionics), Dan Skow (Reams soil analysis), Dr. Christopher Bird (The Secret Life of plants, and The Secret Life of Soil) and many others. Nick was home educated with a heavy emphasis on biological systems and ecology.  He then went on to college where he studied Biology, Ecology, and Genetics, but with the state of the economy in ’08 and the dwindling job market, he decided to cut bait and get out before getting too far into debt. He went on to develop valuable real life skills while he worked in urban landscaping and horticulture for several years. Nick now manages and cares for a multi-million dollar estate  outside of a nearby metropolitan area. Nicholas’ real passion is teaching sustainable living systems and design, and for this reason he is building a Permaculture demonstration site, school, and sustainable farm.
