Episode-2160- Bug Out Trailers with Spirko and Harris – Part 3 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

Tweet Today Steven Harris and I answer your questions on Bug Out Trailers.  Big trailers, small trailers, what to put in them, what to have as an electrical system. Using cargo trailers as an emergency shelter and camper. Toilets in these trailers, storage and transportation of water for consumption and hygiene. This is the third in a multi part series that began with Episode-2117- Steven Harris and Jack Spirko on Bug Out Trailers.  As this is clearly going to become a multi episode series I have created the tag BOT Shows so that all of them can be found at one location. The response to the first in the series was overwhelming, Steve compiled and sent me 14 pages of questions, I printed it out and it feels like a small book, and these are just questions and a few notes here and there.  So we are going to run about 1 hour and 15 minutes on the interview and break it into pieces parts over the next few months.  Episode-64- TSP Rewind – Finding Your Version of Freedom | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

TweetToday is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally, Episode-1712- Finding Your Version of Freedom and was first published on Jan. 19th, 2016. The following are the original show notes from that episode. Yesterday was honestly a bit of a clunky show for me.  Sorry if it seemed that way, you can’t always bat 1,000 you know.  Anyway it ended up in a good place, it forced me to ask some hard questions and to realize a few things should be discussed here.  Specifically in regard to freedom.  Things we discussed many times but now we should discuss with a direct personal application. Some things we must understand about freedom in order to have it First – no one can define freedom for you nor can you for another.  This is actually anti freedom. Secondly – what some would consider total freedom others might consider total slavery and vice versa. Third – if you have to withdraw to a place you don’t want to be in order to be free you are not free. Fourth – if you are to have other people in your life your freedoms must be balanced with theirs. Fifth – if you are to have freedom, others must be able to do things you don’t like, do not approve of, etc. Six – the current state of the world is not freedom, so you will have to fight for every piece of it you take back, or you have to be strategic.  There is no third option. If the fourth sounds like socialism to you (as in the statist way) check your perception bias at the door.  Here I am talking about close voluntary associations like a spouse, a family or perhaps may be an intentional community. Join Me Today to Discuss… A story of freedom, that may not be your freedom Why what you do matters, is only half the equation The way moral people are divided by those in power based on morality Why we can’t change the system with the system, nor should we The modern system is actually anarchy absent the non aggression principle Ways we can begin to break the programming Non reactionary discussions Focusing on morality over facts and issues Focusing on morality over feelings Building teams, coalitions, co-ops you name it Following the lead of the Free State Project Not going away quietly all the time Yes going away quietly at times What you have to ask yourself What do I actually want, do you even really know What do I have to sacrifice for that How much sacrifice will cause me more harm than good What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses What direction are you headed in Final Thoughts Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 1712 Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Gear PermaEthos.com AgriTrue.com GenForward Harvest Eating– (sponsor of the day) Backwoods Home – (sponsor of the day) Like a Rock – Bob Seger He Was My Brother – Simon and Garfunkel Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2158- Jeff Reiland on Permaculture Landscaping in the Suburbs | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

TweetJeff Reiland has worked in Commercial Agriculture and Biotechnology over 20 years striving to “feed the world” but now he is a Designer of Healthy & Productive Landscapes that Enable Resilient Communities. Jeff’s business, Abundant Design LLC, and personal lifestyle both center around living in harmony with the environment. Growing up in rural Iowa he spent a lot of time outside on and around his family’s acreage, where he helped his dad and mom build their home. Scholarships and summer construction jobs helped him pay for college where he got his degree in Biology and Environmental Studies. Following college he did GPS field mapping and soil sampling, but after his company closed that part of the business he worked on a landscaping crew and dabbled in starting his own landscape company. Job security and expectations drew him back to science, livestock and companion animal vaccine production and research, then to genetically modified crop research and testing. Interest in survival topics following Y2K led him eventually to the Survival Podcast, where Jack and then Diego Footer of Permaculture Voices inspired him to begin his entrepreneurial journey. Jeff is in the MSB and a PermaEthos Founding Member where he took his PDC. Abundant Design strives for beautiful and productive landscapes, that will actually improve the quality of our waters, fertility of our soil, and the health of our planet. He runs a local meetup for permaculture, teaches classes at a learning farm and volunteers at a local community orchard.  He joins us today to discuss permaculture landscaping in the suburbs.  Episode-2153- Paul Wheaton on Rocket Mass Heaters | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

TweetPaul Wheaton, the bad boy of Permaculture, was proclaimed the Duke of Permaculture by Geoff Lawton in 2012. He is the creator of two on-line communities. One is about Permaculture, permies.com, and one is about software engineering, CodeRanch.com. Paul is bonkers about permaculture. A few years ago he set about turning over 100 acres of Montana mountain land into a true permaculture community.  Building housing in a form he calls a WOFATI and experimenting with hundreds of options for sustainable living off the grid. Central to this has been heating through brutally cold Montana winters.  To do this Paul has amped up research and work on rocket mass heaters to levels never seen before.  He joins us today to discuss rocket mass heater technology and how it can be used by anyone for sustainable heating.  You can learn more about Paul and all his exploits at Permies.com Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum The Year 95 Walking To Freedom TSP Gear PermaEthos.com TspAz.com – support TSP when you shop on Online Grandaddy’s Gun Club Bullhead Fishing Information RichSoil.com/Heat Permies.com Facts of Life – Billy Squire Sponsor of the Day ButcherBox Harvest Eating Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2152- Food Production on Small Properties | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

TweetOur Urban Garden in 2010 Today we look at homesteading and mainly producing your own food on small lots.  I would define this as 1/20th to 1/4th of an acre.  The average home being built in America today is sitting on about .11-.16 of an acre, or about in the range of 50-60 feet wide by about 100-120 feet deep. Lot’s of people dream of owning more land at some point, but the truth is more land is more work.  Even with three acres I am mostly focused on about 3/4ths of an acres on my property adn put 80% of my effort into about a quarter of an acre total. I also grew up for a time in rural Pennsylvania.  We had a garden of about 1/20th of an acre on about a one acre property.  I always saw the farmers as having so much more land then us, most were 40-120 acre holdings.  But those we knew as family friends when I visited them I noticed, that they had about an acre around their homes, and a garden about the same size as our own.  Those 40 acre tracts grew corn and beans.  This was the 80s by the way. This has always been the way, the majority of what you produce for your own use, doesn’t really require much land. Join Me Today to Discuss…. Two big announcements Why everyone should intensely manage a small piece of property What to look for if you “settle” for a small lot The primary techniques for small land production Rabbits/chickens/quail/etc. Raised bed gardens / square foot gardens Edible landscaping Use the edges and value the marginal Back yard orchards Aquaponics Sprouting and microgreens Container gardening Plant propagtion Small green houses Wild foraging Hunting and fishing The way to think about all these techniques Think in layers Bring nutrients to the plants Succession planting Function stacking Productive livestock not pets Some Great Resources The Hands on Home by Erica Stauss Northwest Edible Life Possum Living – By Dolly Freed Square Foot Gardening Home Grown Liberty Paradise Lot Gaia’s Garden – Toby Hemenway Permaculture in Microspaces – by Geoff Lawton (free) Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum The Year 94 Walking To Freedom TSP Gear PermaEthos.com TspAz.com – support TSP when you shop on Online Grandaddy’s Gun Club Bullhead Fishing Information Sponsor of the Day Ridge Wallet J.M.  Episode-62- TSP Rewind – The How, What and Why of Saving Seeds | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

TweetToday is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally, Episode-1054- The How, What and Why of Saving Seeds and was first published on Jan. 10th 2013. The following are the original show notes from that episode. There is Magic Within Seeds but Saving Them Isn’t Mystical I was talking with Ben Falk of Whole Systems Design yesterday about how more and more small seed companies are now buying at least some seed from companies associated with the ilk of Monsanto. Ben was pretty shocked to hear the Johnny’s Selected Seeds is buying some of their seeds from Semanis, which is owned by Monsanto. There is a lot of fear about GMO contamination both legitimate and ridiculous specifically when the word Monsanto comes up. The best solution is to save your own seeds but we are going to also discuss how to know who you can trust when buying seeds and times where you simply do not have to worry about GMO at all. Join me today to hear about… What is “the safe seed pledge” and why should you care Why we need to be saving seeds in the first place Breeding improvements vs. hybrids vs. GMO (all three are different) Exchanging seeds – a great form of barter The easy plants to save seed from – beans, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes Separation rules – why they exist and not stressing them Staggering pollination times to create effective separation Herbs and unusual plants are often easy to save for and over looked Storing your seeds once they are harvested (is cold storage a good idea) How to clean your seeds, what you need, what you don’t need Growing your own hybrids – hybrids are not always bad How to hand pollinate and ensure purity with squashes and melons, etc Saving root crops like garlic, potatoes, sweet potatoes for replanting The rewards of regionally adapted plants Breeding for any and all traits, it really isn’t hard Additional Resources for Today’s Show Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum The History of The Safe Seed Pledge The Form for Companies to Take The Safe Seed Pledge – PDF File The International Seed Saving Institute Seed Saving Guide How to Make Sweet Potato Slips Dealing with “Spindly” Seedlings – YouTube Video Building an Inexpensive Grow Light System – YouTube Video Potting Up Seedlings – YouTube Video Watering Seedlings from the Bottom Up – YouTube Video Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
