Yasir Qadhi
Summary: Yasir Qadhi was born in Houston, Texas and completed his primary and secondary education in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, after which he was accepted as a student at the Islamic University of Madinah. After completing a diploma in Arabic, he graduated with a B.A. from the College of Hadith and Islamic Sciences. Thereafter, he completed a M.A. in Islamic Theology from the College of Dawah, after which he returned to America and completed his doctorate, in Religious Studies, from Yale University. Currently he is teaching at Rhodes College, in Memphis, TN.

One of the most common names of Allah is Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem, both coming from the root Rahima. Also from this root come the names Arhamur Rahimeen (the most merciful of those who show mercy), KhayrAr-Rahimeen (the best of those who show mercy), Dhur-Rahma (the one who has and is characterized by mercy). In this lecture, Shaykh Yasir Qadhi goes over the most common and primary name of our Creator, "Allah." This name is mentioned approximately 3500 times in the Qur'an. The name Allah comes from "Alaha," which means to turn to for protection and help, which every single creation in heavens and earth do. Others say the name comes from "to elevate." Another meaning is "the one that astonishes and confounds the mind, one which the minds cannot comprehend." The strongest opinion, however, is that the name comes from "Aliha-Ya'lahu," meaning "to worship." So Allah means the one who "is worshiped" and "deserves to be worshiped".
