Yasir Qadhi
Summary: Yasir Qadhi was born in Houston, Texas and completed his primary and secondary education in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, after which he was accepted as a student at the Islamic University of Madinah. After completing a diploma in Arabic, he graduated with a B.A. from the College of Hadith and Islamic Sciences. Thereafter, he completed a M.A. in Islamic Theology from the College of Dawah, after which he returned to America and completed his doctorate, in Religious Studies, from Yale University. Currently he is teaching at Rhodes College, in Memphis, TN.

In these next two episodes of Lives of The Khulafaa, Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi covers the lives of some of the people who worked for the Prophet(S). Some people would refer to them as slaves, but in fact, they were freed by the Prophet(S) himself, but they still were willing to serve him. Looking at the books of history and Seerah, there were approximately 50 or so people who served him. Now the question that often arises is that where did he acquire these people from. Based on the Shaykhâs research, there has never been an instance where the Prophet(S) himself intentionally purchased or asked someone else to purchase a slave for his personal use. Though sometimes he did give money, but only to free them and let them go. So where did all of them come from? The answer is that they were gifted to him throughout the course of his life. But who would do that? Anyone and everyone because at that time, one of the most expensive gifts you could give is a âMawaliâ
âAmr Ibn Al âAs was married at the young age of eleven years old. He then had his son, Abdullah Ibn âAmr Ibn Al âAs(R) at twelve years old. At that time, it was something normal, therefore nobody paid that much attention. Abdullah Ibn âAmr Ibn Al âAs(R) was originally named after his grandfather. Though after accepting Islam, the Prophet(S) advised him to change his name as it had negative connotations. That is when the Prophet(S) gave him the name of Abdullah and said: âThe most beloved of names to Allah is Abdullah and Abdurrahmanâ One of the most famous things about Abdullah Ibn âAmr Ibn Al âAs(R) is that, he was the main companion who was known to keep a book of Hadith in the lifetime of the Prophet(S). He would record Hadiths directly from the Prophet(S). Before doing so, he requested the Prophet(S) for permission and therefore was granted so.
Did you know that the father of Amr Ibn Al 'As, Al âAs Ibn Waâil was one of the worst enemies of Islam? He was a chieftain for one of the sub-tribes of the Quraysh. In fact, a number of verses were revealed in the Qurâan because of him. Of them is Surah Al-Kauthar, which was revealed because he ridiculed the Prophet(S). Ubay Ibn Kâab was from the Ansaar, specifically from the Khazraj tribe. He was an educated man, indeed one of the few who could read and write before the coming of Islam. He was also one of the 70 who attended the second Treaty of Aâqabah. Therefore his conversion to Islam goes back to the earliest Madani period. So Ubay Ibn Kâab is from one of the first batches of the Ansaar to convert. It is reported in the Sahih of Imam Muslim that one day our Prophet Muhammad(S) was once sitting on one of the houses of Medinah. He looked around and said to the Sahabas: Do you see what I'm seeing They said What oh Messenger of Allah The Prophet answered: I see trials and tribulations falling upon your houses like the drops of rain. The frequency, the quantity will affect everybody In another Hadith, our Prophet(S) said that towards the end of time, trials would become repetitive by nature. Every time a trial/calamity would come, the believers would become scared and terrified. They will say that we cannot pass this trial. The Prophet(S) said Allah will open up the doors and let it go away. Then another will come, they will say "This is my destruction" and so on and so forth. Nowadays when we look at how many incidents are taking place, how many issues that are rising day by day. We can see the difference of the how the world was before and what it has become now!
In this Jumu'ah Khutbah, Shaykh Dr Yasir Qadhi explains the importance of family ties in Islam, including how this Ayah can be interpreted in 2 ways by our scholars. In the First Verse of Surah An-Nisa, Allah(SWT) says: O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer. Have Taqwa in Allah, in whose name you ask people to give you things, It could mean that you ask for help from within the family, and it is also a reminder where family takes care of each other. Be conscious of the rights of Allah, and be conscious of the rights of the family. Both of these interpretations are valid in the Quran and what they imply is that the family has a high privilege, second to Allah(SWT). The reality is that the rights of the family, comes to the rights of Allah, and from within the family, the parents have the most rights.
