In the 17th Century, English and Scottish theologians wrote what is referred to as the “Westminster Shorter Catechism”. In it, we read this statement: “The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.” What does it mean to “glorify God” and how can we effectively do it? Too often we live for our own glory—our accomplishments, our achievements, our desire for notoriety, etc. But as Christians, God is to be glorified in ALL that we do. Life is filled with its share of trials and tribulations. We often describe these times like a “desert experience.” Isaiah writes about this theme in Chapter 35 and how God will once again cause the desert to bloom and cause the redeemed of the Lord to be crowned with joy. In its future interpretation, Isaiah is speaking of the Millennial Kingdom when Christ will rule and reign on Earth for 1000 years. But in its near interpretation, he writes about God’s sustaining grace through the trials of everyday life. In 1925 a wonderful Daily Devotional was written by Lettie B. Cowman entitled, Streams in the Desert. It was inspired by Isaiah 35:6 and it is still published today after more than 90 years! In today’s study, Pastor Gary examines the problem Judah had of turning to Egypt for help against the Assyrian army instead of turning to God. It wasn’t until they had depleted their resources and exhausted their own efforts that the people of Judah finally turned to God. When they did, God wasn’t angry and did not shame His people. There were no “I warned you” or “you should have listened to me” or “I told you so” comments. Instead God had been waiting for them and eagerly helped them because he is a gracious and compassionate God. And that’s how he treats us too. Hypocrisy plagues us all. All of us are inconsistent from time to time with the way we live or talk or evaluate others in relation to ourselves. One of the worst types of hypocrisy is how we relate to God. This was the problem with the Jewish people in Isaiah’s day. He accuses them of honoring God with their lips (giving God lip service), but not their hearts. Did you know that according to a recent survey by the Barna Group that “hypocrisy” is the number one reason Millennials (those in their 20’s and early 30’s) give for why they don’t want to attend church? Seven hundred years before Christ, Isaiah prophesies about the Messiah being a “precious cornerstone.” A cornerstone is the beginning point of a building. It’s the foundational stone upon which all other stones are aligned. Isaiah uses building imagery to describe Jesus this way because He is the foundation of the Church and of our salvation. But in addition, Christ-followers need to ask whether or not He is the cornerstone of every aspect of their lives. In other words, does everything in our lives “square” with Jesus as the Cornerstone, or is He simply only a small brick in the wall of our lives?
