An in-depth study of Titus 1.

The topic of fasting—going without food for a limited period of time in order to draw near to God—is one of the least-practiced and least-preached among the spiritual disciplines. But fasting is mentioned more in the Bible than water baptism. The subject is referenced seventy-seven times in Scripture. And although we are not commanded to fast, we are expected to fast and will be rewarded for fasting. Pastor Gary shares five benefits of fasting in today’s study from Isaiah 58.

In Isaiah 56, the prophet Isaiah addresses the problem of exclusivity—that God’s people thought of themselves as an exclusive club to which “foreigners” and “outcasts” were not invited. In addition, God expresses His heart for those who felt excluded. This is both a warning to those who feel exclusive with God, and a welcome to those who feel excluded from God. It is good for us to examine our own hearts in these areas—do we have any prejudice toward people that we have excluded? Or perhaps we think that God doesn’t love us or accept us, and we feel excluded. Both perspectives are wrong and Pastor Gary helps us to align our hearts with the heart of God in today’s study entitled, “All Are Welcome.”

For people who are estranged from God, Isaiah gives a clear invitation: that if we SEEK the Lord and REPENT (turn from our sins and turn to God), He will “have mercy” and “freely pardon” us. So if God is a merciful God and freely pardons all who turn to Him, the only thing that stands between my sin and my forgiveness is my pride. Isaiah 30:18 tells us that “God longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion.” Seek the Lord today and find mercy and forgiveness from Him.

In 700 B.C., Isaiah gives vivid details about the suffering, crucifixion, and resurrection of the long-anticipated Messiah. We have the advantage of looking back in time and seeing that all of what Isaiah prophesied was fulfilled entirely and exclusively by Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Messiah of Isaiah 53, and He came to earth to save us from our sins. Why would God announce His coming with such specificity 700 years in advance if not because He loves us and wants us to recognize Jesus and accept Him as our Savior? In response to Israel’s idolatry, God emphasizes His reality—that He is the only God and there is none like Him (Isaiah 46:9). Today, there is a plurality of gods among various world religions. If you have no regrets in life, it’s probably because you haven’t lived long enough. We all have regrets; regrets about things we’ve done or said; regrets about things left undone or unsaid; regrets about what happened to us, or things that never happened that he had wished for. What we do with our regrets is the difference between someone who moves forward and someone who is stuck in the past. God says to us in Isaiah 43:18, “Forget the former things. More than 300 times in the Bible, God exhorts us to not be afraid, or to be worried, or to be anxious. Why? Because we are! Everyone wrestles with some kind of fear in his or her life. Just between Isaiah 41 and 43, God tells us to not be afraid five times because (1) He is with us, (2) He will help us, and (3) He loves us.
