How to Master Content Marketing | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:10

Marketing Podcast with Pamela Wilson Content and the notion of content marketing is here to stay. Prospects and clients alike expect to be able to turn to a search engine and find the answer to any question or challenge they face. This idea is also likely one of the greatest sources of stress for most business owners. The need to feed the never satisfied content monster is real. But, content marketing has evolved and is no longer a nice thing to have – it’s the air that powers all of marketing today and you simply need to get this part right in order to fully maximize any marketing channel. My guest for this week’s episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast is Pamela Wilson, founder of Big Brand System and the driving force behind most of the content you read at Copyblogger. She is also the author of Master Content Marketing: A Simple Strategy to Cure the Blank Page Blues and Attract a Profitable Audience. Pamela and I talk about content marketing and what it takes to produce compelling material. Pamela knows all about everything marketing. She’s an award-winning graphic designer and marketing consultant who, for 30 years, has been teaching small business owners how to grow their business with a combined system of marketing, strategy, and design. Questions I ask Pamela Wilson: * How would you define the term “content marketing” today? And how has it evolved throughout the years? * The idea of writing content is to not necessarily attract thousands of readers but to draw in prospects and to move people along the customer journey – can you explain this? * Do you believe that, as companies look to grow their teams, small business owners should all be hiring content-specific staff? What you’ll learn if you give a listen: * How to create non-intrusive content that is helpful and easy to read * Where to begin when creating a content strategy and what the key components are to creating great material * What the different stages of readers are and how to write effective content for each category Learn more about Pamela Wilson and Big Brand System here and check her out on Copyblogger here.  How to Use Integrations to Increase Productivity | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:08

Marketing Podcast with Wade Foster I love integrations – you know, those odd little bits of technology that allow one awesome tool talk to another. Integrations are so useful for automating, marketing, productivity, and of course getting things to happen that need to happen but won’t. For example, I use Infusionsoft as my CRM and marketing automation tool. I also use GoToWebinar to conduct countless trainings and workshops. When someone hits one of my landing pages to sign-up I want to capture that lead in my CRM or tag them if they are already there, but I also want to add them to GoToWebinar without making them complete another form. Through the magic of an integration tool, I can get all of that done without the person seeing it happen. I’ve always been fascinated with automating processes and for that I’ve always turned to Zapier. (Just FYI it’s pronounced Zapier like Happier!) My guest for this week’s episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast is Wade Foster, CEO and co-founder of Zapier. Zapier is a cool tool that has democratized integrations. Wade and I discuss marketing automation and how integrations can increase productivity and improve conversions. Wade knows all about automation and productivity. After a short stint in the corporate world, he teamed up with Bryan Helmig and Mike Knoop and they started Zapier as a side project. Now, connecting more than 600 integrated apps, Zapier employs a remote team of 55 employees world-wide. Questions I ask Wade Foster: * You had a unique strategy in your start-up phase where you charged for the privilege to be in your beta. What was the strategy behind this? * What’s the competitive landscape of what you’re doing in integration? * Do you use content in a different way to get people to convert than you do to just let people know you’re here and you have great stuff? What you’ll learn if you give a listen: * How an integration system can increase productivity and help you grow your revenue * What “scalable SEO” is and why it’s a critical component of any marketing plan * Why communication and documentation are essential in managing a remote team Learn more about Wade Foster and his company, Zapier here. For more useful tips on integrations, marketing automation and how to effectively manage your business and your team remotely, check out Zapier’s library of educational resources here.  How to Give Your Content CPR | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 25:56

Markeing Podcast with Laura Belgray There are at least 2193 ways to make your content better and the best copywriters know them all. However, there are just three things that every marketer must master to dramatically improve their copy. Your web pages, brochures, and emails must have Clarity, Personality, and Resonance (CPR). Questions I ask Laura Belgray: * If you’re writing creative and exciting copy that is supposed to drive a decision but your client tells you that what they do is really boring, how do you make it spicy? * What place does humor have when creating copy? * When you sit down to write a sales letter, hoping to touch a range of emotions, is there a set of standards that you use to create the content? What you’ll learn if you give a listen: * Why creating conversational copy is more likely to convert * What role the acronym CPR – Clarity, Personality and Resonance – plays in creating killer content * How to find your voice and why it’s necessary in sales related content Learn more about Laura Belgray and her company, Talking Shrimp here.  How to Think About Hustle | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 17:47

Marketing Podcast with Neil Patel The word Hustle sometimes gets a bad wrap. In days of old, it conjured up thoughts of Getting Hustled as in a scam. Even today its meaning can get lost in a work all day and night Gary V kind of hustle. But I think there’s a middle ground – more like Charley Hustle – the player that prepares, works hard, and wins and loses with grace. My guest for this week’s episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast is Neil Patel, author of Hustle: The Power to Charge Your Life with Money, Meaning, and Momentum. He is also the founder of Quick Sprout, Crazy Egg, Hello Bar and KISSmetrics. Neil and I talk about how to find your passion and turn that momentum into a successful business that is both professionally and personally rewarding. Neil knows all about hustle. Coming from a hard-working family, he has entrepreneurship in his blood and has helped companies like Amazon, NBC, GM, HP and Viacom grow their revenue. He was recognized as a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 30 by President Obama and one of the top 100 entrepreneurs under the age of 35 by the United Nations. Questions I ask Neil Patel: You break the book up into three sections – Heart, Head & Habits. Can you explain how this ties into finding your passion? “Hustle” can imply negative preconceptions; why did you choose this for your book’s title? What is the “10-Minute Rule” and how has it changed your life? What you’ll learn if you give a listen: * How exploring several paths, and failing at some, can reveal your true calling Why stress is actually good for leveraging your career How combining your “natural talent” with your other abilities can lead to a successful business Learn more about Neil Patel and the amazing progress he’s made in marketing here.  The Science of Pre-Suasion | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: Unknown

Marketing Podcast with Robert Cialdini Like so many others in marketing, one of the first books I read was Influence. Today this is required reading for anyone trying to persuade through writing, messaging, speaking – pretty much any form of communication. The principles outlined in this book have stood the test of time. So, it’s a pretty darn big deal when the author of said book, Dr. Robert Cialdini decides it is time to add to the conversion slightly 30 years later. I asked him why it took so long to write his second book and his answer is testament to just how important his first work is. He said, “I didn’t want to plant a bunch of shrubs around a great tree, I wanted to wait until I had another tree.” My guest for this week’s episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast is Dr. Robert Cialdini, author of the legendary NY Times Bestseller book, Influence (which sold over 3 million copies and has been published in over 30 languages.) He is also the founder of Influence at Work and author to a new book called Pre-Suasion: A Revolutionary Way to Influence and Persuade. Robert and I talk about the science behind communication and how the message before the message is key. Pre-Suasion adds a simple notion to the conversation of persuasion. The big idea of this new work, Pre-Suasion is that there’s a step that must happen before you deliver your key message and that it’s the state the listener is in when they hear your key message that determines how receptive they will be to it. Without this set-up you may be less likely to persuade. Dr. Robert Cialdini, frequently regarded as the “Godfather of Influence,” knows all about persuasion, compliance, and negotiation. His books are the result of decades of peer-reviewed research on why people comply with requests. Questions I ask Robert Cialdini: Can you describe for us the research that went into your newest book, Pre-Suasion? Do we need social proof and consistency for this kind of pre-suasion to be effective? Some people may view this as “tricking.” Are there unethical elements in influencing? What you’ll learn if you give a listen: * How altering the mindset of the moment, referred to as “privileged moments,” can create a state of mind for recipients in communication What a tactical approach to influence is and how environment plays a critical role Why asking for a person’s advice, versus asking for an opinion, can encourage collaboration and support Learn more about Robert Cialdini and Influence at Work here.  SEO for Growth | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:25

Marketing Podcast with Doug Burdett, John Jantsch & Phil Singleton In my book SEO has risen beyond the tactic level to the strategic level – in fact, that’s precisely why I teamed up with SEO pro Phil Singleton to write a new book on the topic called SEO for Growth – The Ultimate Guide for Marketers, Web Designers, and Entrepreneurs. The word growth carries a strategic element to this topic and as you’ll hear in this episode I think basic SEO practices must become a part of planning, messaging, editorial decision making and even to some degree the products and services offered by a business. For today’s show the microphone has been turned as the host for this week is Douglas Burdett, founder of Artillery Marketing and host of the Marketing Book Podcast. He interviews authors every week about the latest in modern marketing and, for this week’s episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast, Doug interviews me and Phil Singleton, CEO of Kansas City SEO & Web Design. Phil and I are co-authors of SEO For Growth: The Ultimate Guide for Marketers, Web Designers & Entrepreneurs. SEO for Growth is Your One-Stop Digital Marketing Guide. Marketing is no longer about mass-market advertising and outbound sales; it’s about capturing demand — grabbing the attention of people already looking to make a purchase or acquire specific knowledge. To do that, your content needs to be at the top of Internet search results and this book will explain it all. Questions Doug asks Phil and me: Tell us more about the quote in your book: “We have heard grown men cry when hearing that their website is absolutely useless…” Can you explain why and how content is such an important part of SEO? What should companies be looking for and what are the red flags that stand out when looking to outsource SEO? What you’ll learn if you give a listen: How SEO has evolved over the years and what technical and non-technical “tweaks” you can make to optimize your website Why keyword research, content and link-building are all critical components of SEO How incorporating an SEO mindset can help simplify the process and make you realize that it’s all about “stuff you should be doing anyway” Learn more about our guest host, Douglas Burdett, his company Artillery Marketing and his podcast The Marketing Book Podcast.
