SGJ Podcast #249 – The Beginning, Middle and Eventual End of the Space Game Renaissance | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:36:56

Welcome to this week’s podcast, my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I talk about the current space game resurgence we’re in the midst of, what ignited it, how it’s going, and what we think will bring it down. As these things happen in cycles, the current amazing pace of space game development can’t last forever. I mean, people only have so much time and money. We go into a wide array of theories as to what might cause the demise of the genre yet again. We agree we’re not there yet, but each day brings us closer to it. Thank goodness we have so many games now to carry us through the next slow patch, huh? ;) Next week on the show, by request, we’ll be talking about DLC. While DLC can mean awesome things like full-blown expansions, it can also mean piddly little nickle-and-diming schemes like horse armor. We’ll talk about it all, and likely then some. If you’d like to request a topic, or have a question or comment, please feel free to drop them below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thanks so much for listening, and we hope you enjoy the show.  SGJ Podcast #248 – Age of Space | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:10:36

Welcome to this latest podcast, folks! This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I sit down with Anders Lindås and Øyvind Lundenes to talk about their upcoming space resource gathering and combat game, Age of Space. We talk about the game’s future, its inspirations, how it’s being partially funded by the Norweigan government (links below on that) and more! We also spend time playing a very, very, very much super early alpha version of the game, and it’s a lot of fun for how simple it looks initially. Next week on the show, we’re going to talk about the current space game resurgence. When and how it began, it’s current momentum, and when it will eventually end (because these things run in cycles). As always, if you have a question or comment, you can drop it below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thanks so much for listening/watching, and we hope you enjoy the show. Show Notes Miscellaneous Items * Norwegian Film Institute * Innovation Norway Games Mentioned * EVE Online * Age of War

 SGJ Podcast #247 – It’s All About the Journey. Man. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:36:33

Hello my friends, and welcome to this week’s podcast! This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I sit down to discuss a topic that was Spaz’s idea: the journey in video games. Whether the destination/ending is worth it or not, which games help make the journey memorable. We talk about a LOT of games that gave us memorable journeys, even if the endings didn’t live up to the rest of the game. It’s a pretty fun and lively discussion overall. Next week we’ll be talking to the developers of Age of Space, who have kindly agreed to join us in the middle of the night, their time. :) As always, if you have a question or comment, you can drop them below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums.  SGJ Podcast #246 – Solar Warden | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:54:23

Welcome to this week’s podcast, my friends! First off, let me apologize for the audio here, for some reason my recording stopped three minutes in (I think it happened when I turned off Dropbox), so I had to rip the audio from the YouTube video. I hope it’s okay for y’all. ;) This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I sit down with Dan Adams, CEO of Polar Zenith, to talk about their currently-Kickstarting space combat dogfighting and RTS game, Solar Warden! We talk not only about the game’s history, but go off on some crazy tangents, and talk a lot about Kickstarter, indie gaming, the space game genre and more. Next week on the show, we’re gonna talk about the journey versus the destination in gaming, mostly space gaming but also with other series as well.  SGJ Podcast #245 – Space Games with Excellent Music | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 58:00

Welcome to this week’s podcast episode, my friends! I have to apologize for this episode for a couple of reasons, first off. First, it was late, which made it shorter, because I was having some stupid technical issues in regards to voice chat (which we did get resolved). Secondly, I’m a terrible DJ, so the music that plays during the show isn’t the best quality. Now, with that said, this week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I sit down and talk space game soundtracks. We (mostly) love space game music, so we came up with a really, really long list (mostly thanks to Spaz and all of our listeners who chimed in with their own suggestions) of space games with amazing music, and you can see the list below. The great thing is that many of the soundtracks we mentioned are available for download or purchase. Overall, it was a fun, if odd show. Next week on the show, we’ll be talking to the folks behind the currently-Kickstarting mix of RTS and space dogfighting combat, Solar Warden! As always, if you have any questions or comments, drop them below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums.  Episode 244 – How’s The Industry Doing? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:00:07

Welcome to the podcast, my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I try to take a higher-level look at the industry and how it’s doing. This includes stuff like loot boxes, DLC, problems with Steam and other digital distributors and much more. It’s a fairly lively discussion that covers a broad range of topics and games, but we manage to stay within the broad range of the topic, even with all our meandering, so yay! ;) Next week, we’re gonna talk about a topic we’ve not touched on since episode two of this very podcast: Music! We’ll talk about the games we feel have the best soundtracks and more! If you have a question or comment, as always, hit us up below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Welcome to this week’s show my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I sit down to talk spacey MMOs while playing some EVE Online live! We talk about the first MMOs we played, which are our favorites, why some of our beloved games endure even when officially shot down, why some MMOs just don’t click with us, and much more. It’s a vibrant discussion about some of the longest-running games in the genre (EVE turns fifteen this year, for instance) that veers quite a bit off topic at times, but hopefully, you find it as fun as we did. Next week, we’re gonna take a step back from just space games to talk about the genre as a whole. How is video games, as a medium, doing these days? From microtransactions to loot crates to DLC and beyond, we’ll hopefully hit all the big talking points. Welcome to this week’s podcast, my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I sit down with David Strachan, developer of the currently-Kickstarted co-op space combat game, Undercrewed! We talk to David about the history of the game, the struggles of running a Kickstarter campaign and much more.  SGJ Podcast #240 – The Much Maligned Capital Ship | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:33:18

Welcome to this week’s show my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I talk about capital ships. Those large ships that are inconsistently used in so many space games. We discuss games that do them well, games that do them poorly, why there aren’t more games that focus on them and much more. We realized as we talked that the RTS genre seems to be the most consistent in their great representation of cap ships, while space sims are all over the place. Interestingly enough, Star Trek covers both the best AND the worst the genre has to offer as well. It was a fun show, and we hope you all enjoy it. Next week on the show, we’re gonna talk about what our dream space games would entail. If you’d like to share your dream game with us, drop it below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums.  SGJ Podcast #239 – MegaWars | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:35:56

Welcome to this week’s Podcast my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I sit down with David Baity, the creator of the latest iteration in the long-running MegaWars series, Dawn of the Third Age, to discuss this massively multiplayer online exploration, colonization and conquest game. We do play the game live, so you might have a better time watching the video from YouTube, but regardless, we have a lot of fun talking about the game’s long history, how the latest iteration game to fruition, the perils of developing in early access (the game crashed a few times) and a lot more. It was a really fun time, and we learned a lot about this massive game! Next week, we’ll be taking a look at the inconsistent and blighted representation of capital ships in space games. Are they too big? Too small? Not represented enough? We’ll talk all that and more! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to drop them below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thanks for listening/watching, and we hope you enjoy the show! Show Notes Games Mentioned * MechWarrior * Air Warrior Online * Stellar Emperor * Island of Kesmai

SGJ Podcast #238 – Venting about Elite: Dangerous | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:03:21

Welcome to this week’s podcast my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I are joined by our friend Dennis (Denacity in our Discord group) to discuss the game we love to whinge about, Elite Dangerous. Now don’t get me wrong, we actually love Elite, it’s just that we see all these other games doing some things better, whether it’s the economy in EVE Online or the shared universe in Jumpgate, that we then say to ourselves, “I wish Elite had that.” It also happened to be the big day for its latest content drop, so we got to try some new features out as well. After a lot of talking, we all came to the point that we feel Elite has a lot of potential, it’ll likely just take years to live up to it. We’re off next week as I recover from dental surgery, but join us in two weeks when we talk to the developer of Mega Wars. As always, if you have a comment or question, you can drop it below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thanks for listening/watching, and we hope you enjoy the show! Show Notes Games Mentioned * Jumpgate * EVE Online * Vendetta Online * Evochron Legacy

 SGJ Podcast #237 – Starmancer | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:36:12

Welcome to this week’s podcast, my friends. This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I sit down with Tyler Millershaski to discuss their currently-Kickstarting space station sim, Starmancer! We talk about the game in depth, as well as the Kickstarter campaign itself, which is a fascinating insight into the mind of the Kickstarter backer. ;) We also, I think for the first time in the show’s history, pause to take a pee break. No, I’m not kidding. It was a really fun show to record, so I hope it’s fun for y’all to listen to. ;) Next week on the show — just in time for the next big patch to drop — we’re gonna try to air all of our grievances about Elite Dangerous in one fair swoop. We discuss the game’s history, it’s major ideals, all the moving parts under its hood and much more. It’s a very impressive game so far, and it has so much more coming, this is definitely one to watch if you’ve wanted something like Crusader Kings in space. Next week on the show, we’ll be welcoming the folks behind the currently-Kickstarting space station sim, Starmancer!  SGJ Podcast #235 – Angels Fall First | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:48

Welcome to this latest podcast, my friends! This week, Jim, Hunter, Spaz and I sit down with two of the folks at Strangely Interactive — – Josh “Strangelet” Grafton and Mikolaj “Farseer” Jarzin — to discuss their fantastic combined-arms first and third person ground and space shooter, Angels Fall First. My friends, we played the game live, so the interview is occasionally interrupted by shooting. I only realized too late there was a spectator mode, and should’ve been using that throughout the show to focus on the interview and not the game. Ah well, next time, right? THANKFULLY stranj and farseer (their handles) were totally up to the task of discussing their game while playing, and we learned a lot about it. It was really a fun episode to record, so I hope it’s a fun episode for y’all to listen to. :) Next week on the show, we’ll welcome back, for the third time, the developer of Alliance of the Sacred Suns (formerly Imperia) to talk about how his character-driven space grand strategy game is coming along. As always, if you have a question or comment, please drop them below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thank you for listening! :) Show Notes   Games Mentioned * Sadly I was too busy to write any down, sorry! I think we mentioned Battlefront 2 at least once. ;)
