On Wednesday March 19, 2014 at 8pm/PST (10pm/CT, 11pm/ET) we are happy to welcome Nicole and Evan of The Bicycle Stand to Swoop’s World Late Night. Join us as we have this opportunity to meet Nicole and Evan, learn about The Bicycle Stand, and why they are so passionate about bikes. We are also simulcast by AM1670 – Dewberry Jam Community Radio – San Antonio, TX. Swoop’s World Late Night is on Wednesday’s from 8pm/PST – 11pm/PST tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Nicole and Evan/The Bicycle Stand Nicole and Evan opened The Bicycle Stand in 2011 because they just couldn't seem to put their bikes away. After countless nights meticulously refurbishing vintage bikes out of their living room as Netflix movies played in the background, they realized they needed more space (and that bicycles make terrible couches). The pair began searching for a proper workspace — and soon found it tucked inside a quaint storefront on Long Beach’s Broadway business corridor. Longtime cyclists, Nicole and Evan envisioned The Bicycle Stand as equal parts lifestyle boutique and repair/restoration shop. Drawing inspiration from the passionate riders and collectors they had met while touring other bike-friendly cities together, Nicole and Evan looked to foster their own unique brand of two-wheeled revelry in their hometown. Since launching, the store has become a hub for Long Beach’s burgeoning vintage bike community, welcoming beginners and casual cyclists alongside daily commuters and dedicated collectors. With a reputation for stellar customer service and unparalleled, impeccably detailed craftsmanship, Nicole, Evan and their team remain enthusiastic about promoting cycling within their community.

We are also simulcast by AM1670 – Dewberry Jam Community Radio – San Antonio, TX. Swoop’s World Late Night is on Wednesday’s from 8pm/PST – 11pm/PST tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Eat LBC: Two Girls, One Idea When Elizabeth Borsting and Terri Henry founded Eat LBC, they did so for selfish reasons. It seemed like every other city, town or community had their own restaurant week except Long Beach. Neither wanted to have to leave the LBC to enjoy new dining experiences; after all, they both knew that Long Beach had some great restaurants and talented chefs of its own. So what are two hungry girls to do? Create Eat LBC and organize a bona fide Restaurant Week of their own.

We are also simulcast by AM1670 – Dewberry Jam Community Radio – San Antonio, TX. Swoop’s World Late Night is on Wednesday’s from 8pm/PST – 11pm/PST tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Angela Madsen Angela Madsen is an accomplished ocean rower with 6 Guinness World Records for rowing oceans. On June 10, 2013 she set out to row a solo ocean rowing boat with no support boat from California to Hawaii. She was to stay on her little boat the entire time, no one to give her any food or water. She needed to have enough provisions on board to sustain her for as long as the journey was to take. Her goal was to row as many hours a day as she possibly could and try not to drift too far off course while asleep. Her quest to attempt the solo row began with the idea followed by logistical planning, purchase, the shipping and outfitting of a solo rowing boat. It became a tribute row to Veterans of all services and to Spirited Adventurer and her friend Orlando Rogers who was tragically killed in a plane crash on May 15th 2011. He was 26 years of age and was a Royal Marine. Orlando was very supportive of Angela and all of her projects and he was very excited about her intentions to do a solo row. It was during the planning for the row that she felt it would be fitting to make that row a tribute to honor his memory. He wanted and planned on being there for Angela as he was on the Circumnavigation of Great Britain. “Though it will not be the same, he will be there with me for every rowing stroke and every nautical mile. Orlando was a very special and amazing person. The name of my boat shall be The Spirit of Orlando” said Angela. Due to severe weather related problems Angela was forced to abort her California to Hawaii row and leave her boat adrift on the high seas. Her story of getting home, eventually locating her boat and getting it back to her home base is but yet another small chapter in her remarkable story. Join us as we learn about her book, preparations for another attempt, and what keeps her so motivated each and every day. Jack Nunn Jack Nunn, Owner of Roworx Fitness, started rowing in ‘96 for Long Beach Juniors and made the 1997 Junior National Team Selection Camp. He stared for four years at UC Berkeley, winning four Pac-10 championships and three IRA National Championships. He was a member of the first undefeated Pac-10 and IRA National Champion Freshman 8 in ‘98 and repeated the feat in ‘99. Jack helped his varsity 8 place second at the Henley Royal Regatta in 1999 in the Ladies Plate Challenge Cup in London, England. Jack also played two seasons with the Cal Ice Hockey Team. Jack earned his BA in Business/Communications.

Swoop’s World Live at February First Fridays | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 44:10

On Friday February 7, 2014 at 7pm/PST (9pm/CT, 10pm/ET) we are back together with our friends of Mangione headquarters for another Swoop’s World  live broadcast from First Fridays. We'll join Michelle Mangione and Friends at the Mirage Mediterranean Grill for a fun night of music and interviews. Join us as we get a chance to catch up with Michelle and find out about new music, lawsuits, and what's in store for 2014. Tune in at Swoopsworld.com. Michelle Mangione A familiar face in the Los Angeles music scene, Mangione first polished her chops playing drums for such greats as saxophonist Buddy Collette and guitarist Robben Ford. An accomplished drummer by age 16, Mangione taught herself to play guitar, bass and piano while growing up in Los Angeles. She studied under legendary jazz drummer Kay Carlson before going on to graduate at a young age from Percussion Institute of Technology in Hollywood. She later taught at PIT and then became a successful road musician. Mangione was well-known in the rock world as the drummer and driving force behind the band Sideswipe, named one of the ten Greatest Orange County Bands Ever by the OC Weekly and winner of two Orange County Music Awards. Mangione toured nationally and abroad as singer, songwriter and drummer for the band. Audiences were drawn to the rich, alto textures of Mangione’s voice, and they connected to her lyrics. Sideswipe’s high-energy performances, lauded by music reviewers and fans alike, became synonymous with Mangione’s explosive drumming style. Delivered with a powerful voice and bold lyrics, Mangione’s songs connect the dots between personal experience and the big picture. She then sets that picture into motion through hypnotic melodies. "What is a Saint?" challenges our ability to give love freely, while “Man With a Gun,” written after she was held-up at gunpoint, examines the cycle of hate, poverty and crime. With her band, box drum and acoustic guitar, Mangione challenges the world of live music to rise to a very intimate and honest level. Her signature blend of percussion-infused acoustic music has been featured on KLOS with Jim Ladd, 100.3 The Sound F.M., WWOZ (New Orleans) CBS Radio Night Views (New York), Canada's CUIT radio, and The Early Show with Matt McAllister on Santa Barbaras’ KTYD f.m. Mangione’s music and likeness has appeared in film and on television, including: Skins (BBC), New Now Next Music Awards (MTV, Logo), Witchblade, Time of Your Life (Sony/TriStar), Army Wives, The Travel Channel, Secret at Arrow Lake and the award-winning film True Rights. Michelle Mangione’s music is available at: iTunes, CDbaby, and other outlets.

Whiteboy Slim Maurice Richard Libby aka Whiteboy Slim is a musician and visual artist. He takes a consistent approach to his work in both media, mixing and matching his tools on tried-and-tested structures. Musically, he draws on experience and a diverse set of influences, including jazz, funk, world music and hip-hop, to create a very personal, coherent and enduring blues sound. Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong sparked Maurice’s interest in music and in ‘blue’ sounds. He started to experiment with a number of instruments as a child and was soon winning awards with his first band. Still in his teens, Maurice sang and played harmonica in the blues group Red Meat, which featured his brother Michael on Drums and Ray Montana, the Regina guitarist who went on to back up Sawyer Brown, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Paycheck. After moving to Toronto, Maurice took on the persona of Whiteboy Slim. His driving blues outfit, Automatic Slim, was a popular live attraction, filling classic venues like the El Mocambo, The Silver Dollar Saloon, and the Black Swan. Automatic Slim was the house band at four different clubs on different nights of the week, and was noted for having best grossing Wednesday night downstairs at the El Mocambo. Maurice shared the stage during this period with other key Canadian blues artists, such as the brilliant guitarist and harmonica player, Michael Picket, and the Kendall-Wall Blues band. When personnel changes eventually shut down Automatic Slim, Maurice embarked on a solo career, playing jazz in Toronto clubs, then returning to Saskatchewan, where he plays his blues solo and in various group formations. Maurice learned his craft in impressive company. While reading Jazz and Composition at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, he hung out with fellow students and teachers including jazz great Gary Burton, pianist Al Copley (co-founder of Roomful of Blues), and bassist Ron McClure (bassist with Charles Lloyd, Wynton Kelly, Quest, The 4th Way, Joe Henderson, Blood, Sweat & Tears, The Pointer Sisters, Sarah Vaughan, Thelonious Monk).
