Ellen Bristol: Fundraising Guru | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 59:04

An artist is a person who creates, practices or demonstrates their creative talent through performance. Realists, says the Urban Dictionary, are the people who understand what needs to be done, and who do it to make the world a better place. Think about your personal career path. When were you an artist, with your talent in the lead? When were you a realist, doing what needed to be done and applying your talents to the task at hand? Fundraising Guru Today's guest is Ellen Bristol, who took her talent for language and the performing arts and applied it to the work of selling main frame computers. When that industry shifted, she applied what she learned about sales to create a best-selling program for managing successful sales and fundraising campaigns. Ellen Bristol believes that asking people for money is an art; getting people to give you money is a talent. Find out the key elements behind this art and talent on this weeks Livelihood Show episode! To find out more about Ellen, please visit the Bristol Strategy Group's website. When you try to improve things, you hear remarks like these: "We don't have time! We don't know how! We're not glamorous, popular, interesting, or well known!" Well, this would be a great time to change those perceptions, wouldn't it? See beyond the myths of "notime, no skills, no confidence" and learn the Seven Steps to Fundraising Success, the seven basic habits, skills and methods that will transform your fundraising efforts and improve results year after year.  Diana Daffner: Intimacy Retreats | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:10

Remember the intensity of locking eyes across a crowded room? Diana Daffner and her husband Richard do, and they believe that this “simultaneous energy exchange” is how couples deepen their connection to each other. This purposeful invitation to intimacy (“into-me-see”) is at the heart of their workshops which they call “Intimacy Retreats”. Their program is the result of their mid-career shift in focus. Richard was a successful business man; Diana was a technology writer. They wanted to be able to work together; and live in community by the water with the opportunity to enjoy beautiful sunsets on a regular basis. They added an additional requirement: that the livelihood they were creating should build upon, and strengthen, their deep and enduring connection as a couple. Diana’s background includes a black belt in the gentle martial art of ai-ki-do, which translates as "the Way of unifying (with) life energy" or as "the Way of harmonious spirit. She used this to develop “Tantra Tai Chi, a slow dance of movement and awareness that give couples an opportunity to renew their connection, and recharge their emotional batteries. Henry David Thoreau wrote, “If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.” Diana and Richard Daffner built the foundations beneath their vision. You can learn more about her experience, be inspired, and find ideas, resources and insights to help you navigate your personal career path. Richard and Diana Daffner offer Intimacy Retreats as adventure vacations for couples ready to deepen their connection. http://www.intimacyretreats.com/DaffnerBio.htm

Barry Nierenberg: Well-Being as a Personal Performance Objective | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:00

“How’s work going for you these days?”.  Psychologist Barry Nierenberg says that if you understand the science of well-being, this question can be the launching pad  to make good things better and bad things less frustrating. Each of us can assess how we’re doing and—most importantly— maximize the factors which bring us a sense of well-being and minimize the  disappointments that diminish us." Barry runs the Study Center in Positive Psychology at Nova University. In this week's Livelihood Show, he shares some of the exciting new research: by understanding the characteristics of people who are thriving at work, and the characteristics of work places which allow their employees to flourish, we can make our own well-being at work our personal performance objective. Take a listen to the in-depth interview below: You don’t have to wait to be ‘empowered’.  Each of us can increase our fulfillment and well-being in the workplace through our own actions and decisions.  Even when the work is hard and frustrating-- whether you work for someone else or you have your own business-- a sense of well-being is always a reasonable personal performance objective. Dr. Barry Nierenberg, PhD, ABPP, is an Associate Professor of Psychology within the Nova Southeastern University Center for Psychological Studies, where he leads the Study Center in  Positive Psychology- an emerging field of study which focuses on what makes people thrive and groups flourish. He holds a Diplomate in Rehabilitation Psychology,  is a member of the Executive Board of the American Board of Rehabilitation Psychology. For the past 30 years, Dr. Nierenberg held numerous leadership positions as a psychologist and director of training , working with other healthcare professionals in hospitals across the country. He currently serves on the Executive Board of the Florida Department of Health’s Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Advisory Council where he previously held the post of Chairman. He is a Past President of the American Psychological Association’s Division of Rehabilitation Psychology. His research interests are focused on the interplay of biopsychosocial factors in chronic illness, wellness and disease When he turned 40, he reclaimed a dream and took up the saxophone. He now plays a rock and roll tenor sax with fellow musicians at gigs including university events, professional conferences and local bars.  Seth Werner and The Strategic Forum | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 59:01

Seth Werner took a different path. He sought answers to the how of success- what drives entrepreneurs? What sustains them? And then, an even bigger question: what do you do next? The Strategic Forum This stage of life- psychologist Erik Erikson calls it Middle Adulthood- is characterized by the battle between Generosity and Stagnation. The achievement of goals requires setting new goals: the need to create or nurture things that will outlast you. Success at this, Erikson writes, leads to feelings of usefulness and accomplishment; the lack of involvement in something …larger …can create a feeling of inertia and stagnation . Seth Werner channeled some of his remarkable energy into a group called The Strategic Forum. The Strategic Forum  story is one way of answering the question: after success, what’s next? While success is entirely unique to the individual who defines it, it’s powered by a framework that any of us can apply: Discover, Design, Build and Achieve. Leap Start, a not-for-profit program aimed at helping young people find more purpose, direction, and greatness in life describes four stages for creating the foundation to your next success:  Discover, Design, Build, and Achieve. Discover- focuses on clarifying who you are, what you want, and why you want it. Design- focuses on knowing exactly what you need to do reach your end goals Build: is about overcoming the barriers leaping you from getting started or reaching higher Achieve: is about delivery- performing when it’s all on the line; reassessing your goals,  and dealing with success. You can find more information about  Leap Start on their website, http://leap-start.com/about-us. They offer resources and training in this framework through their  online resources and in-school workshops, to our ambassadors’ network and our Leap-Start ‘Feats’.  Larry Powell – Franchise Quest | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:09

When you look at buying a new car for instance, sitting inside the one you are interested in for the first time is an emotional event. Your senses are in a heightened state. You're not really in fact-gathering mode. You're in dream mode. Dream mode can be a dangerous place, because it's based on emotion. What are the operating costs? What is the repair record? What is Franchise Quest? When you are looking at franchises, your emotions will run high, too. It can be really exciting (as it should be) to look into small business ownership. Just don't let the dream mode about owning your own business get in the way of doing the research that's required. Doing franchise research the right way is not difficult. What is difficult is taking the emotion out of your decision making process, and only focusing on the facts.  Pat Sisson: Hotel Manager and Ghost Buster | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 52:55

Can you launch a livelihood career with an unusual set of skills?  Musical gifts, a gift with words, athletic gifts—we can easily imagine work opportunities that would allow us to express these talents in a contemporary marketplace.  What about a gift of clairvoyance? It’s described as the ability to gain information about an object, person, location or physical event through means other than the known human senses- extra-sensory perception. Today’s guest, Pat Sisson has built that career. She found a market for her skills in clairvoyance with people ranging from wisdom seekers to law enforcement. Now, she's sharing her livelihood journey with us.  I first met Pat in Knoxville, Tennessee with a group of graduate students, and I’ve been following her career with interest ever since. She is an author, motivational speaker, and counselor with an unusual set of skills. Here’s what she says on her Facebook page: “Since 1984, I have been a fulltime psychic. I like using the "tools" of the trade (such as tarot, palmistry and) psychic reading, which can be informative and spiritual. I have my own company and pay taxes. I enjoy the privileges of citizenship….Yet in  '66 what I do for a living was very suspect..” Pat is the author of The Royal Path, a Layman's Look at the Tarot. Career planning is often delegated to guidance counselor offices and other resources, and we are limited to choosing from what they have to offer.  Authors Michael Goodwin & MJ Rose | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 52:56

Our first guest, author Michael Goodwin, has written a revealing book called Economix: How our economy works (and doesn’t work) in words and pictures. In it, he describes the fundamental ideas behind how money works in our society, and the ways in which the rules are often rigged in favor of Big Business and Wall Street.  Using the format of a graphic novel and the clear language of a story teller, we may be able to discover that the Emperors New Clothes are in fact nothing but hype and illusion… Our second guest is PR expert MJ Rose, who left advertising to become a novelist-- only to find that the key to her success as as a successful writer would draw upon the corporate skills she thought she was leaving behind. Have you ever been blown off with the criticism “That’s not how we do things around here!.” The ability to know when to use commonly accepted wisdom, and when best practices from other environments can provide a breath of fresh air, is the essence of successful innovation. These thoughts fall in line with MJ Rose’ marketing philosophy. MJ's new book Seduction is now out! Get yours today, here.   Join us as we speak to these two amazing authors, and be sure to tweet at us @LivelihoodShow to jump into the conversation!
