Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 54 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Saturday morning 25 November 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. In rugby league: The Dragons and Bulldogs are the two Clubs leading the race for want-away NZ Warriors forward Addin Fonua-Blake after the Tongan enforcer requested a release from his contract with the Warriors on compassionate grounds last month to head back to Sydney to be with family. The Dally M Prop of the Year will stay with the NZ Warriors in 2024, but will likely be sporting new colours in 2025 and beyond. Meanwhile the Tigers have shopped prop David Klemmer to NRL rivals in a bid to free up his A$750,000 salary to help them land Jarome Luai on a A$4Million deal. In Football: Former Barcelona, PSG and Juventus star, Dani Alves is set to stand trial for alleged sex assault and could face up to nine years behind bars if found guilty The former Brazil international, 40, is accused of raping a young woman in a Barcelona nightclub on 30 December 2022, and was arrested in January after turning himself in. In addition to requesting a nine-year prison sentence for the defendant, the prosecution has requested compensation of €150,000 for the complainant. Alves has been in prison without bail since handing himself in 10 months ago. He has denied any wrongdoing and insists the sex was consensual. In combat sports: Finally – it’s confirmed so save the date – 17 February 2024 is when Tyson Fury will put his WBC belt on the line, with the WBA, IBF and WBO titles held by Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk also up for grabs in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The winner will be crowned the Heavyweight division’s first undisputed champion since Lennox Lewis from 1999 to 2000. Finally in Rugby Union: Rumours in Fiji are that a French Top 14 Club Coach and a Tier One rugby nation Coach lead the shortlist of candidates who have applied to take over as Head Coach of the Flying Fijians. In a puzzling move, the Fiji Rugby Union interim Board has named Senirusi Seruvakula “to act in the role” for now. Sounds like a Bollywood blockbuster! You can bet if interim Chairman Peter Mazey and team had a big fish applicant, they would have jumped to name him already, but have now kicked this can down the line to the next mob. Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 53 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Thursday morning 23 November 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. In rugby league: Michael Maguire will stay on as Head Coach of the New Zealand Kiwis after a disgruntled group of ex-players pushed for his sacking, saying that he wouldn’t be able to juggle two roles – Kiwis Coach and NSW Blues Coach, claiming also that his involvement in State of Origin would benefit the Kangaroos. However, the New Zealand Rugby League Board decided against his sacking with the playing group also backing the former Wests Tigers Coach. Maguire only had to point to the recent Pacific Championships where his Kiwis smashed Mal Meninga’s Kangaroos 30-0 in the final in one of their best performances in recent years. In SportsBiz: The ICC Cricket World Cup won a few days ago by Australia in India, drew a record attendance of 1.25 million fans, surpassing the prior mark of 1.02 million set for the 2015 event in Australia/New Zealand and smashing the 752,000 who attended the England/Wales tournament in 2019. Disney’s Hotstar topped 59 million concurrent viewers for the tournament final in which Australia upset the host nation India. The figure set a new record for global on-demand video streaming - a whopping 24 million more viewers than the prior streaming record set just last month. In combat sports: Nikita Tszyu has been crowned the Australian Super Welterweight Champion, after defeating the experienced Dylan Biggs in Newcastle last night. Tszyu was sensationally dropped in the first round, but he recovered well and landed several strong blows to close out the round. In the fourth, Biggs took a beating and left commentators baffled as to how he stayed on his feet and survived the round. But Biggs couldn’t match ‘The Butcher’ and hit the canvas in the fifth before his team threw in the towel to hand Tszyu the belt. Finally in Rugby Union: Recently retired or shoved-out-the-door Wallabies Head Coach, Eddie Jones has ruled out coaching Wales, Ireland or Scotland. So, what about sunny Fiji? We thinks Fast Eddie would produce magic with the Flying Fijians with his sharp rugby mind and big Bula smile! Go Fiji Go Eddie Go! And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 52 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Wednesday morning 22 November 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. In rugby league: The NRL has cleared Michael Jennings for a return to the Sydney Roosters three years after his career went off the rails. Jennings hasn’t played in the NRL since 2020 when he was suspended on the day of the Eels’ elimination final against the Rabbitohs after failing a drug test. The veteran centre’s contract was ended by mutual consent in 2021 and Jennings accepted a three-year ban for doping. And former Sydney Roosters prop, Sio Siua Taukei’aho will not be joining the Bulldogs ahead of the 2024 season after he failed a medical test. The 31-year-old was reportedly offered a two-year deal to join Cameron Ciraldo’s squad but a foot issue reportedly saw him fail the test and the Bulldogs have now walked away from the potential move. Taukeiaho’s injury will reportedly require surgery which would have seen him miss the early stages of the 2024 NRL season. In SportsBiz: The troubled run up to next year’s Paris Olympics has spread to a new sector: hotel prices. A new report from Paris tourism showed that hotel prices will rise 314% between the summer of 2023 and next summer’s Games, somewhat similar to price hikes seen for prior Olympics and World Cups. So average prices will rise from US$185 per night to US$765 OUCH. In combat sports: Nikita Tszyu and Dylan Biggs have both made weight ahead of their blockbuster clash for the Australian Super Welterweight title tonight. Both fighters made weight comfortably as Tszyu tipped the scales at 69.6Kg while Biggs weighed in at 69.5Kg. Speaking after making weight, Tszyu revealed just how important this fight is to him. “It means everything for me,” Tszyu said. “It’s where my life and focus has led up to.” As for Biggs, he was keen as mustard to finally get in the ring and settle their score. “The time for talking is done,” Biggs said. “It’s fight time.” Also on the card is Issac Hardman’s bout for the vacant WBC Intercontinental Middleweight title against Troy Coleman. Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 51 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Tuesday morning 21 November 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. In combat sports: After scoring six straight wins inside the Octagon, Dricus Du Plessis will receive his first shot at UFC gold in 2024. As announced by UFC CEO Dana White earlier this month, the South African tough guy will be the first man to challenge newly crowned UFC Middleweight World Champion Sean Strickland when they headline UFC297 on 20 January 2024 in Toronto, Canada. In rugby league: The Eels Brad Arthur enters a make or break contract year and needs to prove he is worth going forward with, after years of near misses. Also Dylan Brown needs to repay his team and deliver on his pay packet after his suspension rocked their finals hopes last year. And the Eels might need to go to market if their two Hooker options fail to stand up following Josh Hodgson’s retirement and Reed Mahoney’s defection to the Bulldogs in consecutive seasons. In SportsBiz: Lionel Messi's six shirts from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar could become the most valuable game-worn item of football memorabilia if they sell for more than the US$9.3Million price tag for Diego Maradona's shirt that was worn during the 1986 quarter-final victory over England, during which he scored his infamous 'Hand of God' goal Sotheby's estimates the shirts worn by the Argentina Captain in Qatar, including during the final against France in December 2022, could fetch more than US$10Million. Messi shared news of the auction on social media, announcing a portion of the proceeds would be donated to a Barcelona Children's Hospital, for children suffering from rare diseases. Michael Jordan's 1998 NBA Finals jersey, which sold for $10.1M at Sotheby's in New York in September 2022, holds the current record for a game-worn item of sports memorabilia. And finally today – remember the Blade Runner? Oscar Pistorius will have a second chance at parole at a hearing on Friday after he was wrongly ruled ineligible for early release from prison in March. South Africa’s department of corrections said in a statement sent to the press yesterday that a parole board will consider the former Olympic runner’s case again this week and decide “whether the inmate is suitable or not for social integration.” Pistorius, a world-famous double-amputee athlete who broke barriers by competing on carbon-fiber running blades at the 2012 London Olympics, has been in prison since late 2014 for the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. And at the Las Vegas Grand Prix: Max Verstappen sang Elvis’ ‘Viva Las Vegas’ over the Red Bull team radio as he celebrated winning the first race in the glamour city in 41 years. Ferrari driver, Charles Leclerc started in pole position, ahead of the F1 Series Champion, but Verstappen won again, with Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez coming in 3rd. So the Las Vegas Grand Prix Top 10 Results: 1) Max Verstappen, Red Bull 2) Charles Leclerc, Ferrari 3) Sergio Perez, Red Bull 4) Esteban Ocon, Alpine 5) Lance Stroll, Aston Martin 6) Carlos Sainz, Ferrari 7) Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes 8) George Russell, Mercedes 9) Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin 10) Aussie young gun, Oscar Piastri in a McLaren and he recorded the fastest lap in Las Vegas yesterday. In Rugby SportsBiz: Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan was sacked last night as the State unions continue to fight over major centralisation plans for the sport. McLennan had rejected a call from six rebellious state unions to resign by 5pm Sunday, before an extraordinary general meeting voted him out. The businessman will be replaced immediately by former Wallaby Dan Herbert, with McLennan opting to quit the board entirely rather than remain as a director. It comes, after Rugby Australia’s plan to centralise the structure of the sport in the wake of the World Cup disaster, with Rugby Australia to create a unified high performance program and effectively take charge of the Super Rugby franchises’ commercial functions. While NSW Rugby and Rugby Victoria supported the plan, as did Andrew and Nicola Forrest who own the Western Force, McLennan was sent a damning letter of no confidence by the Queensland, ACT, West Australian, South Australia, Tasmanian and Northern Territory state unions on Friday. See you later mate! In the ICC Cricket World Cup: Australia are World Cup champions once again, defeating India by six wickets in front of 92,453 fans at Narendra Modi Stadium to lift the coveted trophy for a sixth time. Travis Head, named Man of the Match, pummeled India’s world-class bowlers throughout the run chase, scoring a masterful 137 runs off 120 balls to help Australia chase the 241-run target with 42 balls to spare. Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 49 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Sunday morning 19 November 2023. Happy 40th Culden & Amete! Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. And we begin with the US$1Billion cost, 6.1Km Las Vegas Grand Prix where Ferrari claimed a qualifying one-two with Charles Leclerc to start the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix on pole after a dramatic session that saw big names tumble early. The champion Max Verstappen came in third but starts on the front row instead of Carlos Sainz, who finished second, but was dropped back 10 places after copping a grid penalty that left the Ferrari star fuming. So the starting line-up when the Las Vegas Grand Prix gets underway at 10PM sin city time tonight: 1 — Charles Leclerc, Ferrari 2 — Max Verstappen, Red Bull 3 — George Russell, Mercedes 4 — Pierre Gasly, Alpine 5 — Alex Albon, Williams 6 — Logan Sargeant, Williams 7 — Valtteri Bottas, Alfa Romeo 8 — Kevin Magnussen, Haas 9 — Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin 10 — Carlos Sainz, Ferrari (10-place grid penalty) “Still disappointed with the penalty,” Sainz told Sky Sports post-qualifying. “Not going to lie, still in a very bad mood and trying not to show it too much. But it is what it is.” In SportsBiz: Warren Buffet has been wildly successful when it comes to investing, making money with Apple, Coca-Cola, SirusXM and more. Now, Buffet can add “sports team owner” to his portfolio. Berkshire Hathaway — Buffet’s mega-fund with a market cap of more than US$700Billion — has invested in Atlanta Braves Holdings, the new parent company of the MLB team that Hathaway recently bought nearly US$8Million worth of shares in, according to an SEC filing. In their third fiscal quarter, the team reported an 11% jump in revenue to US$272M. Operating income swung from a loss of $4.7M a year ago to a gain of $15.7M. In football: FIFA’s process in awarding Saudi Arabia the 2034 World Cup was significantly quicker than those of most other editions, arriving 11 years ahead of the event. Now, a potential US$1Billion sponsorship deal is putting the bidding process in a new light. Aramco, the Saudi Arabian state-owned oil company, is close to becoming FIFA’s biggest sponsor in a deal that would include annual payments of up to US$100Million through 2034, according to the London Times. It is unclear whether sponsorship talks between Saudi Arabia and FIFA took place after, during, or even before Saudi Arabia’s World Cup bid. This isn’t FIFA’s first brush with controversy involving World Cup bids, with the US Department of Justice accusing FIFA officials of taking bribes from Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and Qatar securing hosting rights for 2022. Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 48 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Saturday morning 18 November 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. And we begin with SportsBiz: Where all eyes are on Vegas, with over 2000 private jets expected to fly into airports around Las Vegas today, as the stars descend on sin city for the biggest party in town – the Las Vegas Grand Prix. While F1 drivers zip down the strip, bathed in the electric glow of its opulent casinos, music will mix with the motorsport at countless events including artists: will.i.am, J Balvin, Tiësto, John Legend, Keith Urban, Kylie Minogue, Thirty Seconds to Mars and more. Red Bull has constructed a 20,000-square-foot hospitality complex where the centre piece is the Holzhaus, an alpine inspired three-level party palace for VVIPs and team use only. Or for US$7,000 you can mingle with David Beckham and Shaquille O’Neal at Club SI hosting Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit and Saturday Race Night party. A quick glance at the companies setting up camp around the 6.1Km circuit reads like the New York Stock Exchange, with American Express, Heineken, Hilton Grand Vacations, MGM Resorts International and others constructing luxurious trackside suites. The Bellagio Fountain Club in the heart of the Strip will provide the backdrop for the winner’s stage and post-race ceremonies but if you do not already have a ticket, which started at US$11,000 each, you are too late. Setting up the race has come at considerable expense, with Liberty Media CFO Brian Wilding detailing capital expenditure costs of US$435Million up to the end of September for the entire grand prix build, bringing the total cost of setting up the race to at least $1.06Billion. The entire 6.1Km course has been resurfaced ahead of the event. According to Formula 1, between 12 and 25 centimetres of existing road was ripped out and the re-surfacing work involved 60,000 tonnes of base-layer pacing to prepare the track, on top of which was layered 43,000 tonnes of asphalt to form the circuit surface. On top of the track re-surfacing work, F1 also installed 1750 floodlights, 18 temporary grandstands, trackside barriers and pedestrian bridges — so people can continue to commute and tour the 24-hour city. In football: Manchester City’s record-breaking 2022-23 season keeps delivering, even months after the conclusion of its historic campaign. In June, Man City became the first English soccer team to win the treble since their crosstown rival Manchester United in 1999. Now, just weeks after Man United set a EPL record for annual revenue with US$773Million, Man City has bested the Red Devils yet again — reporting revenue of US$884M for this past season. Profits came in at almost US$100M — nearly double a year ago — as commercial, broadcast, and match-day earnings all jumped year-over-year. Winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League came at a steep cost, though. Man City’s US$525M spend on play salaries is also a Premier League record. Man City, owned by Abu Dhabi-based City Football Group, currently has a valuation of nearly US$5Billion — the fifth-highest in the world among soccer clubs, according to Forbes. And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 47 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Friday morning 17 November 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. In rugby union: After France XVs Captain and superstar Antoine Dupont announced that he will miss the Six Nations next year to represent France 7s at the Paris Olympic Games 2024, followed by former Australian Captain Michael Hooper doing the same thing, the question now is who else will follow suit? Former England Captain Chris Robshaw recently picked his Great Britain dream 7s Team, made up of XVs stars from England, Scotland and Wales as follows: 1. Hamish Watson (Scotland) 2. Ben Earl (England) 3. Duhan van der Merwe (Scotland) 4. Raffi Quirke (England) 5. Marcus Smith (England) 6. Joe Marchant (England) 7. Louis Rees-Zammit (Wales) In rugby league: The Dolphins are furious at the 2024 NRL draw: They have the final game of Magic Round, taking on the Tigers at 6:25pm when most fans have gone home. And pre-ORIGIN, they are the only team playing every single week. Meanwhile Wests Tigers are gearing up to throw A$1Million-plus cash at star Panthers five-eighth Jarome Luai as a circuit breaker to get off the bottom of the NRL ladder. The Samoan’s flamboyant, off-the-cuff style of attack could be a perfect fit for Head Coach Benji Marshall. In SportsBiz: As Formula 1 descends on Sin City for its highly anticipated Las Vegas Grand Prix this weekend, Michael Andretti’s bid to launch an expansion team continues to gain momentum. The influential American racing figure has already sealed a partnership with Cadillac for his potential F1 team, and now their parent company, General Motors, has decided to build F1 engines for the team starting in the 2028 season. F1 needs an American team, and a champion one at that to really spark the interest of US fans across their three F1 grand prix races. Developing F1 championship-caliber engines can cost automakers north of US$1Billion. · Mercedes supplies its own team, plus Aston Martin, McLaren, and Williams. · Ferrari supplies itself plus Alfa Romeo and Haas. · Red Bull and sister team Alpha Tauri have a power-unit support deal with Honda. · Alpine uses engines from its parent company, Renault. In 2026, Red Bull will transition to using Ford engines. In Boxing: BREAKING NEWS: Kiwi Samoan Joseph Parker takes on KO King – the Bronze Bomber Deontay Wilder on 23 December 2023 in Saudi Arabia, in place of Usyk vs Fury following the Gypsy King’s controversial points win over MMA star Francis Ngannou recently. The card is also set to feature Anthony Joshua vs Otto Wallin who Wilder knocked out in Round One, plus Aussie-Samoan Jai Opetaia will defend his IBF Cruiserweight belt against undefeated British fighter, Ellis Zorra. Russian Lightweight King Dmitry Bivol and British heavyweight Daniel Dubois also feature, along with a Tongan – Junior Fa against Frank Sanchez. In the ICC Cricket World Cup in India, the hosts will play Australia in the final after the Aussies pipped South Africa in their semi-final last night. India beat New Zealand in their semi-final yesterday after Virat Kholi blasted another hundred – his 50th in one day cricket, and in the process, eclipsing Indian legend, Sachin Tendulker’s record which he achieved at the same ground in Mumbai. In football: A New York Times investigative report claims FIFA President Gianni Infantino was working towards a World Cup hosted in Saudi Arabia as early as 2020. Australia withdrew from the running last month after a surprisingly quick process, brought forward by at least three years, during which Saudi Arabia launched their bid just minutes after FIFA had announced they were accepting bids, and the head of Asian Confederation followed up with a supportive statement hours later. So? No big deal girls, after the last FIFA World Cup in Qatar, everyone – fans, players and officials want to play in the best stadiums in the world staying in the best hotels. And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 46 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Thursday morning 16 November 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. In rugby union: Watch out Fiji and Samoa - France Captain Antoine Dupont is set to focus on 7s rugby in the build-up to the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris. Meanwhile, former Wallabies Captain Michael Hooper will play for Australia in the HSBC SVNS Series, also aiming for Paris 2024. In rugby league: With the Christmas décor going up and the NRL pre-season underway, every Club is hoping for some good from Santa this Christmas: The Dolphins Christmas gift wish – one or two more elite players for a deep finals run, and if anyone can perform a miracle it is Wayne Bennett. The Cowboys Christmas gift wish is for Tom Dearden to re-sign a three-year deal worth around A$2Million to remain in North Queensland. The Eels wish from Santa: An ‘X-factor’ signing like the Foxx - Josh Addo-Carr, with speed to burn. So what happens to Sivo? Cut like Waqa Blake? In SportsBiz: In 2021, Roger Federer invested around US$200Million for 3% of Swiss athletic apparel company “On”, founded in 2010. In its third fiscal quarter, “On” saw net sales increase 46.5% from the previous year to US$540.2M. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. The Las Vegas Grand Prix track runs across the grounds of the Sphere, forcing F1’s owners Liberty Media to lease out the venue and effectively shut it down. F1 will own all the advertising on the Sphere for the duration of the race for a fixed fee and so have bundled that into some sponsorship deals, and also sold advertising directly to parties during the race to defray costs. F1 will also host a recovery brunch on Sunday morning inside the Sphere where they will show highlights of the race from the weekend. In combat sports: Former UFC Middleweight Champion Kiwi-Nigerian, Israel Adesanya couldn't help but laugh when Alex Pereira called him out after UFC295 by saying "come to daddy". The Brazilian Pereira became a two-weight UFC World Champion this past weekend by knocking out Jiri Prochazka in New York. "The fact that it sits with him. It hurts his spirit, I like it,' Adesanya said on Youtube. In football: Is this their problem? Man U have scored just 13 EPL goals this season which pales in comparison to the likes of their rivals competing for European spots like Aston Villa (29), Newcastle (27) and Tottenham (24). At his best Tedesco was one of the best fullback’s of the modern generation, but last Saturday’s shock Pacific Nations Test final loss to New Zealand only further underlined how time can catch up with even the champion players.
