Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 69 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Wednesday morning 13 December 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. In rugby union: Bristol Bears are reported to be chasing Fijian number eight BIG Bill Mata, from Scottish side Edinburgh. RugbyPass is reporting that Bears Samoan boss, Pat Lam is keen to add 32-year-old powerhouse and offloading genius, Mata to his squad for the 2023/24 season. The Fijian star is reported to currently make in the region of £450,000 a season. In rugby league: BOOM GONE – the entire Wests Tigers board and CEO Justin “fiasco” Pascoe have been dismissed in a stunning move following a bombshell internal review, according to The Daily Telegraph. Former New South Wales Premier, Barry O’Farrell will be interim Chairman. Mr O’Farrell was previously Wests Tigers Chairman in 2019 before taking up a role as High Commissioner to India. Shane Richardson will be interim Chief Executive Officer. He was previously CEO of Penrith from 2002-2004 with the Panthers winning the Premiership in 2003. He was also the CEO of the South Sydney from 2004 to 2015, with the Rabbitohs winning the Premiership in 2014. And senior NRL Sports journalist, Paul Kent has been found not guilty of allegations he attacked and choked his then-partner at his home in Sydney. Following a two-day hearing in a Sydney Court, Magistrate Daniel Rees ruled that he could not find the charges proven beyond reasonable doubt. In SportsBiz: One of the most extraordinary contracts in pro sports history just got even crazier. Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese baseball superstar has signed a $US700Million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but will be paid just $US2M a year while playing for them. The Athletic first reported the bizarre structure of the contract which will see Ohtani defer US$US680M of his salary until after the deal wraps up. So Ohtani gets US$2M a year between 2024 and 2033 while actually playing for the Dodgers, and US$68M a year between 2034 and 2043. In football: A Turkish referee was punched by a Club President before being kicked by another person after collapsing to the ground in a sickening attack in Turkey’s Super Lig. The visitors received a 95th-minute red card, only to stun the home side with a 97th minute equaliser. When the full time whistle blew, host team President Faruk Koca charged onto the pitch and punched Halil Umut Meler in the face. As the referee hit the turf, another person – who appeared to be a Club official – kicked him in the head. So that’s the beautiful game – now to combat sports: Aussie fight favourite, Robert Whittaker could still be catapulted into a UFC300 blockbuster against Kamaru Usman, despite having already agreed to fight a month earlier in UFC299 against Brazilian Paulo Costa. Speaking with Fox Sports Australia this week, Whittaker’s Manager Titus Day confirmed that since they verbally agreed to accept the fight, Costa has vanished. You mean like run away? Maybe he’s switched to netball. And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 68 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Tuesday morning 12 December 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. In rugby union: All the talk around Kava bowls in Fiji about sacking Ben Gollings is rubbish – Fiji Men are third, equal on 30 points with South Africa who are second, both chasing Argentina on 38 after the Cape Town 7s. Fijiana are fourth in the Women’s standings. A Coach can only do so much. Viva los Pumas! In rugby league: St George Illawarra playmaker Junior Amone has avoided prison after he was found guilty of arming himself with a hammer and chasing a tradesman off a roof during a heated dispute. But the 21-year-old walked out of Wollongong Local Court on Monday without his father Talatau Amone who was sentenced for two and a half years with a non-parole period of 12 months for the same incident. Meanwhile in another Aussie Court yesterday, Daily Telegraph and Fox Sports rugby league journalist, Paul Kent is fighting allegations he attacked a 33-year-old woman at his home in May, 2023. Police allege the pair were involved in a domestic dispute before Mr Kent assaulted and choked the woman. He was arrested by NSW Police at the home shortly after. Body-worn footage played before a hearing at Downing Centre District Court on Monday showed the woman telling officers that Mr Kent had had his hands “around my neck”. In football: Australian superstar Sam Kerr delivered a perfect taunt to rival fans after Chelsea were defeated by Arsenal on Sunday. After the game, with Kerr stuck in traffic, boisterous Gunners fans broke out into chants of “Arsenal, Arsenal” in the direction of Kerr sitting in the passenger seat. The Aussie striker, quick as a flash, threw up four fingers to remind her foes just how many Women’s Super League titles Chelsea has won. Arsenal fans however were quick to point out that Kerr flashed the exact number of goals Arsenal scored in their 4-1 win to hand Chelsea their first loss of the season. In combat sports: Devin Haney beat Regis Prograis by unanimous decision in his division debut to win the WBC Super Welterweight title in front of a sellout crowd in his hometown San Francisco, home of the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night. All three judges scored the bout 120-107 in Haney's favor. It was Haney's first fight as a super welterweight since he made the decision to move up after having trouble making weight at lightweight, where he is the undisputed champion. Haney is now a two division champion. In SportsBiz: Early projections for the 2024 NFL salary cap are coming in at more than US$240Million, representing a significant increase over this season’s US$224.8M that each team is allowed to allocate for player contracts. This season, revenue from the NFL’s new US$110Billion media rights deals kicked in, adding a big boost to overall league cash intake. When final numbers come in, 2023 will represent another record year for the NFL. In 2022, the league is believed to have brought in close to US$20B in revenue — inching the NFL’s 32 owners closer to their long-stated goal of US$25B annual revenue. Come 2024, there is no reason to think the NFL’s billions won’t be even bigger, either. And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 67 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Monday morning 11 December 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. In rugby union: The Cape Town 7s Mens quarter-finals: Argentina 33-0 Canada, Ireland 36-21 New Zealand, Australia 28-0 South Africa and Fiji 29-24 France. In the semifinals: Argentina 26-19 Ireland and Australia 24-7 Fiji. In the Finals: Argentina 45-12 Australia while Fiji won Bronze 14-7 Ireland. Cape Town 7s Women’s QFs: Fijiana 17-19 France. So Fijiana 19-17 Canada for fifth place and Australia 29-26 France for the title. In rugby league: A public inquest into the death of former Manly Sea Eagles player Keith Titmuss will be held in February 2024. The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting the NSW Coroner’s Court has planned a five-day investigation into Titmuss’ death which occurred after a pre-season session in late 2020. The 20-year-old collapsed during the session and died with an initial report unable to identify what caused his tragic death. In the NBA: The Lakers are the inaugural winners of the NBA’s in-season tournament, taking down a plucky Indiana Pacers team 123-109 on Sunday afternoon in their showdown in Las Vegas. And in the Lakers biggest game of the 2023-24 season so far, Anthony Davis went a long way to answering his critics finishing with 41 points, 20 rebounds, five assists and four blocks. Lebron James had 24 points and 11 rebounds while Austin Reaves was a spark plug off the bench with 28 points. Tyrese Haliburton led the way for Indiana with 20 points and 11 assists but was made to work for every bucket against a testing Lakers defence. In combat sports: Aussie boxing star Liam Paro just put the boxing world on notice after delivering a stunning sixth round stoppage win against Montana Love in San Francisco on Sunday. Paro improved his professional record to 24-0 as he thrust himself into the upper echelon of the super lightweight division on the blockbuster Devin Haney vs Regis Prograis card. Meanwhile blonde Aussie bombshell Ebanie Bridges lost her IBF Bantamweight world title via a unanimous decision after she was stunned and completely pummeled by Japanese fighter Miyo Yoshida. Yoshida controlled the fight, landing punches at will with the judges all scoring the contest for Yoshida in a landslide. In SportsBiz: One of the biggest questions in US sports has finally been answered – Japanese baseball star, Shohei Ohtani is signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers, for the next 10 years, at US$700Million according to ESPN, which comes to an average of US$432,098 per game according to The Athletic. Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 66 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Sunday morning 10 December 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. In rugby union: Cape Town 7s Women’s QFs from 7pm with Fijiana-France. Earlier Australia 38-0 Spain and Fijiana 36-12 Japan. NZ 37-5 Great Britain, Ireland 39-14 Brazil, France 29-7 South Africa and Canada 14-21 USA. The Cape Town 7s Mens quarters starts straight after that from 8.34pm with Fiji vs France in QF4. Earlier South Africa 19-5 Great Britain, Fiji 14-17 France, Canada 19-7 NZ and Samoa 7-27 Australia. Fiji 19-12 Argentina, Ireland 14-12 South Africa and Samoa 21-14 NZ. In rugby league: The Sydney Roosters deal, snatching Mark Nawaqanitawase from the Wallabies, has more potential upside if the NRL gives Clubs a discount for signing any top player from another code who would add another dimension to rugby league. But there would be no incentive for Joseph Sua’ali’i should he seek a return to the NRL after his three-year deal with Rugby Australia, with the potential policy tweak to only apply to new players. In the NBA: As the group stage and quarterfinals of the new NBA In-Season Tournament played out, the NBA saw its best November attendance ever, averaging 18,208 fans per game, with players noticeably increasing their intensity. Group games on ESPN and TNT saw a 26% increase from last season’s comparable windows. So, it’s safe to say that the first NBA Cup awarded on Saturday night Vegas time won’t be the last. In combat sports: Australian World IBF Cruiserweight Champion Jai Opetaia (23-0, 18 KOs) faces being stripped of his belt over his decision to take a A$680,000 payday in Saudi Arabia on 23 December against England’s Ellis Zorro (17-0, 7 KOs). The Aussie-Samoan, who claimed the IBF title on the Gold Coast last year despite a broken jaw, is scheduled to feature on the undercard with Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder, Joseph Parker and Daniel Dubois. In SportsBiz: The Women’s Premier League cricket players auction in India this morning saw some of Australia’s best female cricket players making a fortune for six weeks work: Phoebe Litchfield sold to Gujarat Giants for A$182,000. Georgia Wareham sold to Royal Challengers Bangalore for A$72,000. Annabel Sutherland sold to Delhi Capitals for A$364,000. Aussie girls retained by their respective Clubs for WPL 2024 included the Gujarat Giants retaining Ashleigh Gardner on A$577,000 and Beth Mooney A$361,000. Royal Challengers Bangalore retained Ellyse Perry on A$306,000, while UP Warriorz retained Tahlia McGrath on A$252,000, Grace Harris on A$135,000 and Alyssa Healy on A$126,000. And the Delhi Capitals held on to Meg Lanning on A$199,000, Jess Jonassen on A$90,000 and Laura Harris on A$81,000. Better than making Vegemite sandwiches in Wollongong aye girls! And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 65 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Saturday morning 09 December 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. In rugby union: The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that former Wallabies Head Coach Eddie Jones had his in-person interview for the role with Japan Rugby at the Royal Park Hotel in Tokyo on Thursday morning. It’s reportedly down to Jones and South African coach Frans Ludeke, who coaches Japanese Top League side Kubota Spears, having previously coached the Bulls Super Rugby franchise to two titles. Japanese media have long reported the 63-year-old Jones as the leading candidate to take over from ex-Japanese coach Jamie Joseph. And wait for it - sources in Fiji claim that Joseph has applied for the Flying Fijians job, recently vacated by Simon Raiwalui. In rugby league: Is he human or robot? NRL Physio, Brien Seeney has posted that Penrith Panthers superstar Captain Nathan Cleary “Will play the rest of his career without a posterior cruciate ligament in that knee – the likes of Benji Marshall, Greg Inglis, Billy Slater and Shaun Johnson have all played for years with torn PCL’s.” In Football: More Messi magic: Inter Miami might end up the league’s top-earning MLS Club this season, despite not making the playoffs. Thanks to the arrival of Lionel Messi in July, Miami’s 2023 total revenue will land upwards of US$120Million for this year. Inter Miami’s season tickets for next year have, unsurprisingly, already sold out. Even with record goals for 2024, Inter Miami’s revenue could soar still higher in 2025, when a new US$350M soccer stadium is scheduled to open. In the NBA: The stage is set for the NBA’s In-Season Tournament Final tomorrow, between the Indiana Pacers and LA Lakers. In Friday’s first semi-final in Las Vegas, Tyrese Haliburton announced himself as a genuine NBA superstar under the bright lights, dropping 27 points with 15 assists and seven rebounds — and no turnovers — to see the Indiana Pacers take down the Milwaukee Bucks 128-119. Later, the Lakers made quick work of the New Orleans Pelicans in a 133-89 thrashing thanks to a masterful showing from LeBron James who racked up 30 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field and 8-of-8 from the free throw line with five rebounds and eight assists in just 23 minutes. In combat sports: Samoa Joe will reprise his role as series-favorite “Sweet Tooth” in the second season of the Peacock series ‘Twisted Metal‘’. This week, it was confirmed that the show, based on the hit video game franchise, has been renewed for another season. In SportsBiz: More than two years after the Tokyo Olympic Games were held at a reported cost of US$13Billion, six companies, including the advertising giant Dentsu, plus seven individuals, are standing trial in Japan on corruption charges related to the bidding process. The allegations largely center around claims of rigging a string of Games-related contracts. Dentsu in particular served as the chief marketing arm of the Tokyo Olympics, raising a record US$3.3B in local sponsorships and receiving a commission on sales. And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 64 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Thursday morning 07 December 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. In rugby union: HSBC SVNS Cape Town pools – Women: Pool A: Australia, Fiji, Japan, Spain Pool B: New Zealand, Ireland, Brazil, Great Britain Pool C: France, Canada, USA, South Africa And the HSBC SVNS Cape Town pools – Men: Pool A: South Africa, Ireland, USA, Great Britain Pool B: Argentina, Fiji, France, Spain Pool C: New Zealand, Samoa, Australia, Canada In rugby league: The Titans Tongan powerhouse, David Fifita will undergo surgery after suffering a pectoral muscle tear. The club confirmed in a statement yesterday that the 23-year-old back-rower sustained a partial tear during pre-season training. The Maroons ORIGIN star will aim to return for the start of the 2024 season after completing his rehab over the coming weeks. Former Tonga co-captain Sio Siua Taukeiaho is back in training with Catalans Dragons following the collapse of a move back to the NRL due to a failed medical. As early as August, Catalans confirmed he would be granted an early release to make his return Down Under to the Canterbury Bulldogs all but signed and sealed. That was until he failed his medical, with 9News reporting last month that the veteran has a foot injury which requires surgery, leaving the Bulldogs looking elsewhere in terms of recruitment. In Football: The Premier League has completed a US$8.5Billion set of domestic media rights agreements that reasserts its presence as one of the world’s most dominant sports properties. In four-year pacts starting with the 2025-26 season, Sky Sports and TNT will broadcast up to 270 live games per season, each retaining their status with the league, while the BBC will continue to broadcast a free-to-air highlights package. The highly anticipated agreements, the largest sports media rights deal ever in the UK are nearly double the recently struck domestic media rights deals in Italy for Serie A. In combat sports: Melvin Townsend, the man who made the news last year after Mike Tyson was filmed punching him while on board a JetBlue flight that was preparing to take off for Florida from San Francisco, wants Tyson to pay him US$450,000 to cater for his legal bills and future treatment for the injuries he reportedly suffered from the attack, including concussion, cervical radiculopathy and impaired vision according to TMZ. Mr. Townsend’s lawyer said, “Being irritated by a fan is not a legal defense for Tyson.” Sorry, but that just does not make sense. In SportsBiz: Beginning in 2028, amateur golfers will have to start using balls that, on average, cover 5% less distance than today’s balls. That would mean a 250-yard drive would now go about 238 yards. Professionals will start using these balls in 2026. In 2022, the global golf ball market was valued at US$1Billion, according to a report from the research guide Market.US, and it is anticipated to reach $1.35 billion by 2032. So the new balls fly less, you hit them more and they wear out quicker . . so you buy new balls – “kaching.” And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 63 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Tuesday morning 05 December 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. In rugby union: English rugby referee Tom Foley has stepped down from international match officiating for the foreseeable future, citing online abuse as a major reason yesterday. Foley was the Television Match Official at this year's Rugby World Cup final in France when South Africa defeated New Zealand 12-11, and has previously reported receiving death threats to himself and his family in the wake of that game. In rugby league: “They know where to find me.” “I’ve got a history with New Zealand since 2007 when we toured England and I was coach of the team. “I’ve also worked with Steve Kearney when he was coaching the Kiwis and they won the World Cup in 2008. “I have great affection for the Kiwis, I coach several of their guys at the Dolphins in the Bromwich bros and Jamayne Isaako. “The door is certainly open for me. If it’s an option for the New Zealand Rugby League,” the most experienced Coach in the game – Wayne Bennett, has put his hand up to lead New Zealand’s Test team. The Kiwis are on the hunt for a new coach after parting ways with Michael Maguire, who has since signed a three-year deal with the New South Wales Blues. In Football: Champions Manchester City looked set to move to within one point of leaders Arsenal when they led Spurs 3-2 in the dying minutes at the Etihad, but Tottenham scored in the 90th minute to hold them in a six-goal thriller. Meanwhile, Liverpool staged a sensational comeback from 3-2 down after Fulham scored in the 80th minute at Anfield, but they turned the tables in dramatic fashion with goals in the 87th and 88th minutes for a 4-3 win. High-flying Aston Villa scored in the 90th minute to draw 2-2 at Bournemouth while 10-man Chelsea shrugged off a red card to edge Brighton 3-2 on a day when 24 goals were scored in five games on a breathless afternoon in the Premier League. In SportsBiz: Australia’s Gold Coast has scrapped its last-ditch bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, leaving the event in limbo as organisers race to find a willing host. The Australian state of Victoria was originally slated to host the Games, but unexpectedly pulled out in July this year citing an eye-watering cost blowout running into billions of dollars. Surely this is the end? In the NBA: So we’ve reached the Quarter-finals of the worst-named sports event ever – “The NBA In-Season Tournament” with: The Boston Celtics at Indiana Pacers, today at 11:30am, the New Orleans Pelicans at Sacramento Kings at 2pm; the New York Knicks at Milwaukee Bucks at 11:30am and the Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Lakers at 2pm local time. Everyone on the squad, including all the Coaches start earning money now, with the winners taking home all the chocolates – that’s right US$500,000 cash each invidual! In combat sports: The mouthwatering clash between NFL heavyweights the 10-1 Philadelphia Eagles and the 8-3 San Francisco 49ers was billed as the game of the year and boy did it deliver! With just over 9 minutes left in the third quarter with the Niners leading 21-6, San Francisco linebacker Dre Greenlaw got involved in an altercation with a member of the Eagles security team, which led to his ejection from the game. To be fair, the contact to the security guard’s face was minimal, but it was enough to warrant the ejection. The security guard was also made to leave the field to a standing ovation and rapturous applause from Eagles fans! Now for the mandatory law suit. And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 62 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Monday morning 04 December 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent. In rugby union Dubai 7s: Maddison Levi and her sister Teagan have inspired Australia's rugby women to a blistering triumph in the season-opening Dubai 7s, while dynamiting New Zealand's world-record 41-match unbeaten streak. Dual-code star Maddison ended a magnificent tournament with a world series record of 12 tries in a single event as the Aussie World Cup winners defeated their great trans-Tasman rivals 26-19 in the final this morning. Australia became the first team ever to win the same world series women's event four times in a row in the UAE desert. In doing so, they also ended the New Zealanders' air of invincibility as the reigning World 7s Series champions were finally beaten after a year when they set a women's world record of 41 straight series wins, which began after Australia had beaten them in the 2022 Dubai final. France beat Fijiana 14-38 in their quarter-final. In the Men’s quarter-finals: Fiji beat Ireland 24-29 and Argentina beat Samoa 14-21. In the semis South Africa 14-7 Fiji and Argentina 21-19 New Zealand. The All Blacks 7s beat Fiji 12-17 in their bronze medal match, before South Africa 12-7 Argentina to defend their Dubai 7s Men’s title. In rugby league: Australia’s very own Hollywood superstar Russell Crowe is reportedly working with the NRL ahead of the game’s historic season-opening double-header in Las Vegas in March. The governing body had hoped for Crowe and Hugh Jackman to be on board with promoting the Round 1 Vegas clash between Manly and South Sydney starting with the NRL’s official launch in Vegas later this month. But at this stage neither will be at the event, according to the Herald. The Sea Eagle and Rabbitohs will kick off the 2024 season at Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas followed by a clash between the Roosters and Broncos. In Football: Lionel Messi is not ruling out another bid for FIFA World Cup glory with Argentina in 2026, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, despite acknowledging that time is working against him. “I’m not thinking about the World Cup and I’m not saying 100 per cent that I won’t be there because anything can happen. Because of my age, the most normal thing is that I won’t be there. But we’ll see,” Messi said in an interview. In SportsBiz: The centerpiece venue of the 2032 Summer Olympics in Brisbane is now set to be demolished and rebuilt, further accelerating a wave of stadium development across much of Australia. The Brisbane Cricket Ground, commonly known as The Gabba, will be torn down and replaced with a new A$1.8Billion venue that will replace a 128-year-old, 36,000-seat venue with a new one seating up to 80,000. Work on the new stadium will stretch from late 2025 to 2030. In combat sports: Ryan Garcia had to get through some rough moments and some boos from the crowd during his comeback bout against rugged Mexican Lightweight contender Oscar Duarte, but the California star scored an eighth-round KO on Saturday at a packed Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, to rebound from his high-profile stoppage loss to Gervonta Davis in April. The collection of seven animated statues ranged in starting price from US$77 to US$10,000, but the value has collapsed in the last 12 months to around US$1 per NFT currently.
