Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 24 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a bright and sunny Wednesday morning 25 October 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent - the Pacific Ocean. In rugby union: BREAKING NEWS: World Rugby has just announced a new annual men’s XVs competition involving Canada, Fiji, Japan, Samoa, Tonga and USA launching in 2024. It reaffirms World Rugby’s commitment to increasing global competitiveness on the road to Rugby World Cups in Australia 2027 and USA 2031. Approved by the World Rugby Council, the rebranded Pacific Nations Cup, which will be played in the southern hemisphere in August and September, featuring two pools of three teams – a northern pool with USA, Canada and Japan plus a Pacific Islands pool with Fiji, Samoa and Tonga hosting matches. For us coconuts, it’s like putting lipstick on a pig . . . this just reaffirms World Rugby’s ignorance of the emergence and requests of Pacific Islands rugby once again, to play Tier One rugby nations. In rugby league: Fiji Bati pair Mikaele Ravalawa and Kitione Kautoga have pleaded guilty and both fined a percentage of their match fees, after they were charged with careless high tackles following their win over Cook Islands in PoM in Sunday's Pacific Championships clash. Meanwhile, Storm centre Justin Olam has been ruled out of Papua New Guinea's Pacific Championships campaign due to an ongoing knee issue. Olam was a notable absentee when the Kumuls returned to camp in Port Moresby after a week off to prepare for Sunday's Test against Fiji and PNG Head Coach, Justin Holbrook said that Olam would take no part in the tournament. In Football SportsBiz: Another sign of Serie A’s improving financial health: AC Milan has reported its first Club profits since 2006. On the heels of a critical set of the league’s new domestic media rights agreements, the Club said it posted a US$6.5Million profit for the year ended 30 June 2023 on Club-record revenue of US$430.5M — up 36% from a year ago. In football: UEFA Champions League Rd 3 games: Galatasaray 1-1 Bayern Munich and Inter Milan 1-0 RB Salzburg at halftime, plus Man United – FC Copenhagen, Sevilla – Arsenal, Lens - PSV Eindhoven, Union Berlin – Napoli, Sporting Braga - Real Madrid and Benfica - Real Sociedad. In combat sports: “I would love to have a good body. But, I don’t have any hope of having a good body. I’ve been in a training camp, living like a monk, for the past 12 weeks and I still don’t have a good body. “But, the one thing I know is this - this isn’t a bodybuilding contest. “I am an old fashioned kind of guy who can go in there and have a fight, it doesn’t really matter what I look like. It’s about getting the victory. If I had a ten pack and I looked like Adonis and I wasn’t winning, it’s pointless,” the Gypsy King telling it like it is. And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 23 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a bright and sunny Tuesday morning 24 October 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent - the Pacific Ocean. In rugby union: England’s Wayne Barnes will take charge of the Rugby World Cup 2023 final between New Zealand and South Africa at Stade de France on Sunday, with Australia's Nic Berry to referee the bronze final between Argentina and England a day earlier. Barnes, the world’s most-capped referee with 110 tests made his debut with Fiji v Samoa in Suva in June 2006, will become only the second Englishman to officiate a Rugby World Cup final after Ed Morrison in 1995. It will be a record 27th Rugby World Cup match as referee for Barnes in what is his fifth tournament. The final will be his sixth match in the middle during France 2023. In rugby league: Samoan rugby league fans are relishing the prospect of Jamayne Isaako facing off against his Dolphins teammate, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow this Saturday in Melbourne when the Kangaroos host the Kiwis in the Pacific Championships at AAMI Park. The pair have each carried their strong NRL form – which saw them score a combined 39 tries for the competition newcomers – the Dolphins, into the Test arena with their nations of birth, after both represented Samoa in the past. In Football SportsBiz: Remember how Gary O’Neil was surprisingly sacked in June despite leading Bournemouth to survival in the EPL last season against the odds? The Club’s American owner, Bill Foley, said at the time, “that the chance to hire one of Europe’s most promising young Coaches in Spaniard, Andoni Iraola was too good to turn down.” Well O’Neil savoured sweet revenge on his return to Bournemouth as Wolves came from behind to win 2-1 and extend Iraola’s season to just three points and no wins from nine games, and this after Bournemouth splashed out over £100 million in the transfer window. OUCH. In the cutthroat world of the EPL, next weekend’s clash against Burnley could be Iraola’s last roll of the dice. And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 22 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a bright and sunny Monday morning 23 October 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent - the Pacific Ocean. In rugby union: South Africa just beat England 15-16 in their RWC2023 semi-final clash in Paris yesterday morning, thanks to the trusty boot of Andre Pollard cool under pressure. So, after New Zealand bounced Argentina 6-44 we march on to the RWC2023 finals this weekend. Meanwhile, in WXV1 in Wellington, New Zealand: France upset the world champion Black Ferns 17-18, England 42-7 Australia, Canada 42-22 Wales. Catching up with WXV2 in Stellenbosch, South Africa and WXV3 in Dubai there are already some huge mis-matches and with two wins each already, it looks as if Italy and Scotland will play for top spot in WXV2, while Spain and Ireland are top dogs in WXV3. Why? Because same old same old - World Rugby has poured more money and resources into European women’s rugby than anywhere else in the world. Other key results: USA 36-26 Samoa and Japan 32-10 Samoa and Spain meanwhile beat Fiji 19-26. In rugby league: Tonga's history-making touring team, full of NRL talent, have given England a scare in the first of three rugby league Tests before falling to a valiant 22-18 defeat at St Helens. Kristian Woolf's touring side; the first tier-two rugby league side to play a full series in Britain, were still forging forward in the dying minutes overnight as they tried to record a landmark victory. A late try from Manly's Tolutau Koula had set up a grandstand finish but England held out for the four-point win. The NRL Dally M Rookie of the Year, Penrith Panther Sunia Turuva scored a late try to help Fiji to a 22-18 “get out of jail” win against a brave Cook Islands side in their Pacific Championship Test in Port Moresby yesterday. Down 16-18 with just over five minutes to play, Turuva danced through a gap and pinned his ears back from 10 metres out to score a brilliant individual try and give Fiji the win. In SportsBiz: In only its second year, the Amazon & NFL 11-year rights bet, in excess of US$11Billion, against traditional linear television, is looking good: Amazon is averaging 13.6 million viewers through its first five “Thursday Night Football” live streams — 26% above its comparable average to start the 2022 season and 42% higher than the full-season average of 9.6 million last year. Those increases bring Amazon and “TNF” streaming nearer to the NFL’s overall per-game average of 17.3 million so far in 2023 — itself up 4% from last year. The league’s digital growth also extends to YouTube, in its first year running NFL Sunday Ticket after years of satellite-based distribution on DirecTV. In Combat sports: All it took was one head kick to dash Australian Alexander Volkanovski’s dreams of double-champ status, with Islam Makhachev extending his reign on top of the Lightweight division. The undefeated Russian superstar closed the chapter on the rivalry with Volkanovski – claiming a first-round TKO win in the pair’s highly-anticipated rematch at UFC294. Undefeated middleweight rising star Khamzat Chimaev has put himself in a position for a shot at Sean Strickland and the title after a majority decision victory over Kamaru Usman. UFC CEO Dana White bet his house on UFC294 outperforming Tyson Fury versus Francis Ngannou on pay-per-view next Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 21 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a bright and sunny Sunday morning 22 October 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent - the Pacific Ocean. In rugby union: The All Blacks were simply too good for Los Pumas in their RWC2023 semi-final yesterday, swiping Michael Cheika’s men aside with power and accuracy to the sweet tune of 44-6. It’s the Boks turn to wipe England and the northern hemisphere Unions off the RWC2023 landscape this morning in their semi-final clash in Paris. Check out WXV where France has upset the world champion Black Ferns! In rugby league: The New Zealand Kiwis recorded their biggest-ever win over Toa Samoa at Eden Park yesterday - a 50-nil bloodbath; with Jamayne Isaako opening the scoring in the 13th minute, followed by two tries in two minutes from Jahrome Hughes before Isaako crossed for his second. The Kiwis piled on more misery in the second half, with Asofa-Solomona and Isaiah Papali’i crossing within the first eight minutes, before James Fisher-Harris celebrated his first game as Kiwis Captain with the final try of the one-sided Test. Earlier, the Kiwi Ferns ran out comfortable 28-10 winners over Mate Ma’a Tonga women. In other Pacific Championship Tests today: It’s the Fiji Bati vs the Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea women vs the Cook Islands girls in Port Moresby. In SportsBiz and Combat sports: UFC CEO Dana White is crossing his fingers that UFC294 will outperform Tyson Fury versus Francis Ngannou on pay-per-view. UFC294 is on today from the Etihad Arena Abu Dhabi, while Fury vs Ngannou takes place next Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. White loaded up UFC294, with a double main event featuring a Lightweight Championship rematch between reigning belt-holder Islam Makhachev and challenger Alex Volkanovski - and the other main bout will see former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman facing undefeated rising Middleweight star, Khamzat Chimaev in a world title eliminator. In Football: Tributes have poured in from across the football world for England football legend Sir Bobby Charlton following his death aged 86. The football legend, who was part of England’s 1966 World Cup winning squad, died peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning, according to his family. Sir Bobby is also considered to be one of Man United’s greatest-ever players and the Club said it would hold a minute’s silence for him at their game against Sheffield United on Saturday night, with players wearing black armbands. Charlton played 758 games and scored 249 goals during 17 years as a Manchester United player, winning the European Cup, three league titles and the FA Cup. For England, he won 106 caps and scored 49 goals for England, and won the 1966 FIFA World Cup. Rest in Peace Sir Bobby Charlton. And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 20 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a bright and sunny Saturday morning 21 October 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent - the Pacific Ocean. In rugby union: England, the beaten Rugby World Cup finalists of last year, made a statement on their return to New Zealand with a 42-7 victory over Australia in rugby’s newest world series, WXV. The world’s No 1 ranked women’s national rugby team blew the Australian Wallaroos off the park in front of a minuscule crowd at Sky Stadium in Wellington last night. The All Blacks are playing Los Pumas in their RWC2023 semi-final as we file this podcast. In rugby league: Ahead of playing on New Zealand soil for the first time in four years, Toa Samoa see no reason why their support at Eden Park today cannot match that of Mate Ma’a Tonga in recent years. Their game headlines a triple-header at Eden Park, with a match between the New Zealand and Tonga ‘A’ sides and a Test between the Kiwi Ferns and Mate Ma’a Tonga women kicking off week two of the Pacific Championships. In other Pacific Championship Tests this weekend: We tip the Fiji Bati to cococoo the Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea women to papadoo the Cook Islands women In SportsBiz: New York City’s plans for its first-ever soccer-specific stadium is another step closer to becoming a reality. The US$780Million proposal — which will seat 25,000 fans — passed a key approval and is set to open in 2027. For the first time ever, Nike is selling gym equipment — and the Swoosh will have everything from barbells to squat racks. Finally, Amazon is averaging 13.6 million viewers through its first five “Thursday Night Football” streams — nearing linear broadcast numbers. And FOX Chairman Lachlan Murdoch is still betting on broadcast TV? In Combat sports: “12Kg in 11 days … too easy, let’s go,” Alexander Volkanovski is all set for one of the biggest fights in Australian sports history against UFC Lightweight King Islam Makhachev, this Sunday in UFC294 in Abu Dhabi, after shedding a staggering 12kg in 11 days. Now to pile it all back on in 24 hours. In Football: Questioned as to why they took so long to come to the aid of Neymar when he fell awkwardly and seriously injured his knee while playing for Brazil against Uruguay – medical staff said they were waiting on the Referee – who said he thought it was just another “fake dive” from the Brazilian star! Neymar got 9 out of 10 for the dive! And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 19 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a bright and sunny Friday morning 20 October 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent - the Pacific Ocean.  In rugby union: The Australian federal government of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, is using rugby diplomacy to improve international relations with Fiji and Papua New Guinea: The Aussies just confirmed ongoing funding for the Fijian Drua and Fijiana Drua participation in Super Rugby Pacific and the Australian National Rugby Championship respectively, for the next four years. While on his last trip to Port Moresby, Albanese also announced funding for PNG to be the 18th franchise in the NRL in the near future.  In rugby league: The North Sydney Bears have lost out on A$11Million in New South Wales government funding, promised by the ousted Liberal government, and which has been scrapped by new Labor Premier. This has put Papua New Guinea in the box seat to be named the 18th NRL side with funding from the federal government of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, backing PNG to join the NRL, in a political move to improve international relations. In SportsBiz: Two top media companies have reportedly raised their bids for the media rights to Serie A — but the figures still fall short of the initial US$1Billion-plus annual goal set by Italy’s top soccer league. DAZN and Comcast-owned Sky Italia submitted offers that would pay Serie A US$4.75B over five years, or about US$950Million a year, according to Bloomberg, DAZN would pay about US$740M per season, while Sky Italia would contribute about US$211M annually. In Combat sports: IBF Bantamweight World Champion, blonde Aussie stunner, Ebanie Bridges will defend her title on 9 December in San Francisco against fellow Aussie beauty, Avril Mathie in what has already been tagged as the ‘Battle of the Babes’,” with Bridges adding “It will be the sexiest fight ever” and just for good measure, “The weigh-in will break the internet.” Why you might ask? Well, a lot of people, outside of boxing will be interested to see if these two ‘OnlyFans models’ can really box. In Football: Brazilian superstar Neymar has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and will go under the knife. The 31-year-old was stretchered off during Brazil’s 2-0 2026 World Cup qualifier loss to Uruguay, after landing awkwardly after what players and officials thought was just another Neymar dive! But he was in real tears as he left the field, knowing how much match fees he will miss out on while sidelined from playing in the lucrative Saudi Pro League, with Al Hilal, as ESPN is reporting Brazil’s medical staff believe his return could take eight months. Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 18 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a bright and sunny Thursday morning 19 October 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent - the Pacific Ocean. In rugby union: Our world famous tips for the RWC2023 semi-finals: On Saturday at 7AM in S-F1: New Zealand to loslobos Argentina in Paris, and on Sunday at 7AM in S-F2, we tip South Africa to ebay England also in gay Paris. In rugby league: Our world famous tips for the Rugby League 2023 Pacific Championships this weekend, where we tip Toa Samoa to siva-siva the New Zealand Kiwis, and New Zealand women to togotoo the Tongan women at Eden Park, Auckland. We also tip the Fiji Bati to cococoo the Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea women to papadoo the Cook Islands women at Santos Stadium, Port Moresby. In Combat sports: Aussie beast, Alexander Volkanovski has branded UFC cheats “f***ing cowards” after allegations of improper IV use – and dodgy weigh-ins – ignited his blockbuster world title rivalry with UFC Lightweight King Islam Makhachev. Already considered one of the greatest UFC fighters, Volkanovski is looking to become just the fifth UFC ‘champ champ’ ever when he throws down against Makhachev this Sunday at Etihad Stadium, Abu Dhabi. In Football: Needing just a point to be certain of qualifying for next year’s Euro 2024 in Germany, Gareth Southgate’s side fell behind to Gianluca Scamacca’s early goal for Italy. But England booked their place after Harry Kane inspired an impressive fight back, scoring a double to beat title holders Italy 3-1 at Wembley yesterday. Out of form for Man U, Marcus Rashford also scored for the Three Lions. In SportsBiz: Facing arguably an all-time low in its cultural status, after the Olympics posted record-low US television ratings last year in Beijing and two years ago in Tokyo, the International Olympic Committee formally approved flag football, lacrosse, baseball, softball, cricket and squash for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, to boost the global appeal of the Olympics. Me thinks that should read – to boost the appeal of the Olympics to Americans! And that’s a wrap! In Combat sports: Only days after defending his WBO Super Welterweight title, Tim Tszyu has backed fellow Aussie, Alexander Volkanovski to upset UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev in Abu Dhabi this Sunday. Australian boxing superstar Tszyu even suggested sharing a Las Vegas fight week with Volkanovski, the UFC Champion he describes as “an absolute beast”. In Football: The Euro2024 qualifier between Belgium and Sweden was abandoned at half-time yesterday after a “terrorist attack” in Brussels left two Swedish nationals dead. Fans were kept in the ground for security reasons and the game was halted with the score at 1-1. The game was later “abandoned” UEFA said on its website. Spain, Scotland, Türkiye, France, Portugal and Belgium have qualified for Euro2024, set to take place in Germany in June 2024. In the NFL: On Sunday, the NFL played its third and final game this season in London as the Baltimore Ravens knocked off the Tennessee Titans in front of 61,011 American football-hungry fans at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. One day, the city could host a Super Bowl. In November, the NFL will also play two games in Germany and in future, the NFL could also play games in Spain and Brazil, along with an expected return to Mexico. In SportsBiz: Lionel Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami brought the eyes of the world on MLS. Now, they are taking the USA’s most popular football team out to international fans in an effort to grow their global appeal. Next month, Inter Miami will play two exhibition games in China as part of the Club’s first-ever international tour. Inter Miami failed to qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs, which will extend through early December. The Club’s final match of the regular season is Saturday against Charlotte FC. Finally in rugby union: Embattled Wallabies Head Coach, Eddie Jones faced the media in Sydney yesterday for a post-mortem of the RWC2023. Jones was asked if he regretted returning to coach Australia at the start of the year, who he coached between 2001-05. “I always knew this was going to be hard. The only thing I regret is probably telling the press to give themselves an uppercut,” he said. “Look, it probably wasn’t the wisest thing to say but sometimes you say things in the heat of the moment that you regret.” “I probably need to give myself an uppercut, don’t I,” Jones said. No don’t do that Eddie. And that’s a wrap!  17-10-2023 Breakfast Bites FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS Podcast S07E16 #TeivovoSports #TeivovoDigital | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:04:20

Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 16 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a bright and sunny Tuesday morning 17 October 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. And then there were four - Argentina, New Zealand, England and South Africa after the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals. All the others have gone home. So at the RWC2023 semi-finals in Paris this weekend, it’s New Zealand versus Argentina on Saturday at 7am and on Sunday England versus South Africa. In rugby league: Note to Storm boss man Craig Bellamy: Double the salary of rookie fullback Sualauvi Fa’alogo or risk losing him, following his sizzling Test debut on Saturday night. The Toa Samoa star Fa’alogo was close to the best player on the field, despite Australia running out comfortable 38-12 winners in their Pacific Championships opener. The 20-year-old has played just one NRL game - when he scored a double against the Broncos in Round 27 - and he didn’t look remotely out of place against the world champions. Fa’alogo is currently on a development list contract of A$60,000 this year, but the Storm need to at least double that for 2024. Meanwhile, Kangaroos Coach Mal Meninga faces a big call on his backline. Selwyn Cobbo ticked off his Kangaroos debut on Saturday, but could lose his jersey as Valentine Holmes will be available for selection for Australia’s clash with New Zealand on 28 October, after serving a one-game suspension for an off-field incident. While Holmes has become one of the elite Centres in the game, he has also played 14 games on the Wing for Australia. In Combat sports: Two-weight world champion Shakur Stevenson has never been a huge fan of Tim Tszyu - but that all changed after his latest world title triumph against Brian Mendoza on Sunday. 'I was wrong bout Tim Tszyu he looked better then I thought he was last night,' Stevenson wrote on X. Before the fight the undefeated American said he thought Mendoza would beat the Aussie and that he hadn't seen anything 'too special' from Tszyu - 'I think Mendoza beats Tim Tszyu,' Stevenson said at the time. In Football: Spain qualified for Euro2024 after beating Norway 1-0 away on Sunday, joined by Group A rivals Scotland and Türkiye from Group D. Earlier on Saturday, France, Portugal and Belgium were the first teams to qualify for the quadrennial event, set to take place in Germany from 14 June to 14 July 2024. In SportsBiz and only in the USA: Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase insists he is always open on the football field and so gave himself the nickname “7-Eleven.” Now he has parlayed that into a marketing deal with the global retail franchise. And that’s a wrap 7-Eleven! For TeivovoSports.com I’m Culden Kamea – please hit the like and subscribe buttons below if you want to receive more Pasifika sports highlights on Breakfast Bites. Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 15 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a bright and sunny Monday morning 16 October 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. BOOM against all odds – the second upset of the RWC2023 quarter-finals where England arm-wrestled Fiji 24-28 in Marseille to move through to the next round and Fiji proudly goes home a genuine Tier One rugby nation after scalping Japan, England last month and Australia, plus running Wales and England very close at RWC2023. But will it change anything? Who can forget, New Zealand 28-24 over Ireland in a classic Test yesterday. In SportsBiz: The big question for Fiji Rugby Union, Fiji’s passionate rugby fans and the Government of Fiji – what happens now with regards the Fiji Water sponsorship – the most lucrative sponsorship ever of any sports in Fiji’s history; some F$3.8Million for six months until the end of RWC2023. Two questions - will they renew it? And at what cost to Fiji? In Combat sports: In the main event on the Gold Coast yesterday: Tim Tszyu made the statement that he needed to in his final fight in Australia before heading overseas, defeating American Brian Mendoza by unanimous decision (116-111, 116-112, 117-111) to defend his WBO Junior Middleweight title. Sam Goodman defeated Miguel Flores via unanimous decision also (118-107, 120-105 by two judges). In Football and only in Teheran: Cristiano Ronaldo might want to avoid Iran for a while. Iranian media reports that there have been several lawsuits filed against the Al-Nassr star after he hugged and kissed artist Fatima Hamimi on the cheek to thank her for a gift of two paintings. As such, Ronaldo could be staring down 99 lashes as punishment for adultery - touching a woman while in a relationship. This after his Saudi Club Al-Nassr traveled to Tehran to play Persepolis for an Asian Champions League group stage match. Hamimi, who is reportedly 85 per cent paralysed and paints with her feet, was one of many fans who showered Ronaldo with gifts. And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 14 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a bright and sunny Sunday morning 15 October 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. BOOM against all odds – the first upset of the RWC2023 quarter-finals, Argentina has smashed Wales 17-29 in Marseille earlier this morning! Viva Los Pumas! And the New Zealand All Blacks are zuckerberging Ireland in Paris. Stick around for background buzz at the end of this podcast, where I dive into the Fiji versus England quarter-final coming up tomorrow morning. Results from the Rugby League 2023 Pacific Championships: The Australian Kangaroos crushed Toa Samoa 12-38 in their World Cup final rematch as debutants from both sides starred in Townsville last night. The Kangaroos scored four tries in the opening 15 minutes of their Pacific Championships clash with their Aussie-Samoan enforcers, Payne Haas and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui both scoring early, before the visitors rallied to stop the onslaught, Samoan debutant Sualauvi Fa’alogo was a standout, establishing himself as a star of the future. Earlier, the Australian women won their World Cup final rematch against New Zealand with a hard-fought 16-10 victory in Townsville as well - much closer than the World Cup decider which the Jillaroos won this time last year 54-4. We tip the Papua New Guinea Kumuls to corubarum the Cook Islands men and the Fiji women to bacardi Samoa women at Santos Stadium, Port Moresby later today. In Football: The Aussies couldn’t score against England, falling 1-0 in a gripping encounter at Wembley overnight. Australia’s well-drilled defence, hard tackling and dangerous attacking play gave the hosts plenty of headaches, particularly in a thrilling first half, but the Socceroos ultimately fell short after Ollie Watkins scored for the Three Lions, 12 minutes into the second half. In Combat sports: Our world famous tips for the Tszyu-Mendoza main event on the Gold Coast later today: In the main fight, we tip Tim Tszyu to pip Brian Mendoza on points for the World Super Welterweight title. And we tip Sam Goodman to KO Miguel Flores within the first five rounds of their featherweight scrap. OK so in background buzz today, I dive into the Fiji versus England quarter-final at 3AM tomorrow morning. Expect a low scoring game: England has conceded only three tries at RWC2023, the lowest of any team. Those three tries came from 26 entries into their red zone, averaging just two missed tackles per game when defending their line, the lowest of any team – so they are very strong in D. Fiji on the other hand, has scored the lowest tries of any RWC2023 quarter-finalist with just nine, and while Fiji scored 14 first-half points against Wales and 10 against Australia, they scored none against Georgia and only three against Portugal in the first half. Like New Zealand and South Africa, England has not conceded a try inside the opening 20 minutes at RWC2023, plus they have only conceded one second-half try in four games so far. Expect England to also kick a lot, as their attacking strategy has been to put boot to ball, averaging the most kicks in play - 40 of all teams at RWC2023, PLUS the most box kicks @ 45 and mid-field bombs @ 19 average per pool game, with 64% of their total kicks from outside their own 22M, the highest of all teams. Couple that with England being one of the lowest ball-carrying team’s per game – only 108 average carries in their pool games and you can see how they’re going to play. In fact, England’s 92 carries against Samoa was the third-lowest of all teams in RWC2023 pool games. Fiji has a contrasting attacking strategy to England, preferring to keep the ball in hand, averaging the second-most carries per game with 140. But, while Fiji is spending long periods of time in the opposition red zone, averaging the most rucks @ 40 and the second-most carries @ 46 per game of all teams in this zone, including a competition-high 11 pick-and-go carries, Fiji is NOT scoring points, let alone tries. In fact, in RWC2023 pool games, Fiji has averaged one of the lowest points per visit, while in the opposition red zone, per game. As I mentioned earlier, Fiji has scored only nine tries so far in RWC2023. Fiji lost to Portugal last week because they played too tight, running back into their forwards over and over again; playing a narrow attacking game which suited Portugal’s lumbering forwards. Consider, Fiji made 11 visits to the Portuguese red zone, but scored just two tries by playing it tight. England’s lumbering forwards, who are averaging one of the lowest missed tackle counts per game at RWC2023, are just gonna love Fiji running at them, rather than away from them. England has scored twice as many tries as Fiji. Of their 17 tries - · Seven originated from set-piece play · Five from counter attacks · Four from turnovers, and · One from a quick-tap penalty Unlike other RWC2023 quarter-finalists, both England and Fiji are hopeless at line-out drives to score tries, with England launching nine lineouts 10M out from the opposition try-line, for just two tries. Fiji has launched eight lineouts 10M out from the opposition try-line, resulting in just one try. Worryingly, Fiji conceded 11 penalties against Portugal, their highest in all their games so far at RWC2023. They must maintain their discipline against England, who have made the most penalty goal attempts @ 14 of all teams in the pool rounds, and who have missed just four shots when choosing the three-point penalty option. England has also conceded one of the lowest average penalties per game of all teams at RWC2023 @ 8 per game. They have never received a card in a Rugby World Cup knock-out games, while Fiji has received four yellow cards at RWC2023, their highest in a RWC tournament in their history. In summary, for Fiji to win: · They must cut loose and spin the ball wide, especially off second phase and counter-attacks to score tries with their flair and support runners. · Fiji must keep the ball in hand and play it on their feet, rather than rumbling it up and going to ground so predictably now. · England will kick a lot, so Fiji must counter attack with open field running, rather than counter-kicking it back, or out of play. Toso Viti Toso! Go Fiji Go! And that’s a wrap baby! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 13 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a bright and sunny Saturday morning 14 October 2023 – Happy birthday Tahitia! Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. So why do we tip Wales to weewillywonka Argentina at the RWC2023 quarter-finals in Marseille? Because the Welsh forwards are much tougher and they have flash in their backs as well. And New Zealand to zuckerberg Ireland in Paris? Just three words – revenge, pride and learnings. OK here we go - our world famous tips for the Rugby League 2023 Pacific Championships: The Australian Kangaroos to johhnywalker Samoa and the Australian women to sambuca New Zealand women at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in sunny Townsville, plus we tip the Papua New Guinea Kumuls to corubarum the Cook Islands men and the Fiji women to bacardi Samoa women at Santos Stadium, Port Moresby. In Football: England Manager Gareth Southgate has urged his understudies to seize their chance to impress in this morning’s friendly against Australia at Wembley, as he rests his established stars ahead of Tuesday’s key Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy. England could seal their place at next year’s tournament when they face the Italians, but first Southgate will take a look at some of his fringe players against the Socceroos. In Combat sports: The Tszyu versus Mendoza Fight Card sees: Ø Tim Tszyu (23-0) vs Brian Mendoza (22-2) Super Welterweight Ø Sam Goodman (15-0) vs Miguel Flores (25-4-1) Featherweight Preliminaries Ø Nathaniel May vs Jackson Jon England Featherweight Ø Shanell Dargan vs Amber Amelia Super Bantamweight Ø Toese Vousiutu vs Julius Long Heavyweight Ø Hassan Hamdan vs Danvers Cuschieri Welterweight Ø Sergei Vorobev vs Wade Ryan Super Welterweight In SportsBiz from India: Crazy Indian cricket fans desperate to witness Saturday’s World Cup blockbuster between India and Pakistan have booked into hospitals, rather than stay at hotels where some prices have been hiked by up to 10 times their standard rates. Thousands of fans have descended on the western Indian city of Ahmedabad from across the country and overseas to witness a rare meeting of the bitter cricket rivals at the 132,000-seater Modi Stadium. Prominent hotels in the city usually charge 6,000 rupees or US$72 for a deluxe room but on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the price for a day has been hiked to 70,000 rupees or US$865. However, by checking into a city hospital for a health check, the cost is 7,000 rupees, only US$84 a day. “It’s a double act, I believe. They want a full-body check-up and an overnight stay, probably to watch the match,” a city doctor told AFP. “These are mostly non-resident Indians from the United States and the UK who have booked deluxe one-bed rooms and have opted for a full health package.” The doctor added: “We have to be cautious with these bookings, because our primary aim is patient care. We can’t just hand out a bed to watch the match. But we can’t deny check-ups for patients with medical history either.” In the NBA: Twenty-five years later, Shaquille O’Neal and Reebok are collaborating again. O’Neal is the new President of Reebok Basketball, with the Authentic Brands Group subsidiary, as Reebok seeks to return to the elite basketball segment. While Allen Iverson, who signed a new deal with the Group earlier this year, will take over as VP of Reebok Basketball. “We’re back, baby!” O’Neal said in a statement. “Get ready.” And that’s a wrap baby! BeIN Sports currently has Ligue 1’s media rights for broadcasts outside of France, for which it pays US$85Million annually. Ligue 1 would like that number to triple. In an effort to increase what its games are worth to broadcasters, the league is considering playing regular-season games in the US. Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 07 Episode 11 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a bright and sunny Thursday morning 12 October 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. And we start with rugby union, where Dan Carter of New Zealand, Thierry Dusautoir of France, George Smith of Australia, Juan Martín Hernández of Argentina and Bryan Habana of South Africa will become the latest rugby legends inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame at the World Rugby Awards in Paris on 29 October. In rugby league: The Rugby League 2023 Pacific Championships kicks off this weekend 14-15 October with Australia versus Samoa men and Australia versus New Zealand women at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in sunny Townsville. Plus the Papua New Guinea Kumuls versus Cook Islands men and Samoa versus Fiji women at Santos Stadium, Port Moresby. In Football: American billionaire Bill Foley who owns English Premier League club Bournemouth has secured the licence for the new Auckland franchise that will join the A-League men’s and women’s competitions in the 2024-25 season. Auckland is the largest city in Australia and New Zealand without a professional football team, despite football being the most popular team participation sport nationally in New Zealand. In SportsBiz: Disney has been swamped with potential suitors for ESPN ever since CEO Bob Iger said in July that he’s open to bringing in strategic partners. That comment has drawn in the likes of the NFL, NBA, and MLB, Amazon and Verizon. But a major Wall Street analyst, Laura Martin says the NFL should consider purchasing ABC from Disney to protect the scale-oriented broadcast television exposure that is a bedrock of the league’s economics. “The NFL is standing by and witnessing the destruction of the linear TV ecosystem, with its powerful economics that largely flow to the NFL and other sports leagues,” Martin says. “The NFL is fiddling while Rome burns, in our view.” “Content without distribution is worthless, no matter how good,” she said. In Combat sports: “Fair enough,” Tim Tszyu shrugged, “So Mendoza is the bigger puncher? Big punching doesn’t win fights. I’m not here to debate who is a bigger puncher. If he thinks he is the bigger puncher, so be it. I couldn’t care less about anything he’s got. If he’s got Hercules’ arms so be it … he’s got to worry about me.” And that’s a wrap! In Football: What has gone wrong with Erling Haaland? The deadly striker started the season with a flurry of seven goals in five EPL games, but since then the Man City striker has scored just once in his last five appearances in all competitions, including three in a row without a goal. Pep G will have a few sleepless nights as he ponders City’s slump during the international break. In Combat sports: Should he defeat American knockout artist, Brian Mendoza on Sunday, the promoters of Australian champ, Tim Tszyu - No Limit Boxing, have promised to chase down three of the planet’s greatest pound-for-pound fighters – Terence Crawford, Errol Spence Jnr or Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez for a fight.
