In netball – Australia has claimed a remarkable seventh Quad Series title with a 56-50 win over rivals New Zealand in Cape Town yesterday, but the game was marred by one of the biggest umpire controversies seen in recent netball Test history, after the Silver Ferns were denied a goal when neither umpire was watching the play at a crucial stage late in the game – so they disallowed the goal. Can you believe that? Umpire Anso Kemp was distracted by a niggle between two players and so missed the goal and umpire Gary Burgess missed the goal too, admitting watching something downcourt instead. “It’s extraordinary,” commentator Jenny Woods said, as the umpires opted for a toss-up since neither witnessed the goal. “This is nuts!” Fox Netball’s Catherine Cox was left speechless by the drama. “I cannot believe my eyes!” she said. “Wow, wow, wow.” Wow what can I say – like I mean wow! Malo and welcome to Season 4 Episode 24 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika Peoples sports on this beautiful bright and sunny Wednesday morning 25 January 2023, coming to you from paradise on the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean ! In rugby – Fiji Men are the defending champions of the Sydney 7s which starts on Friday. They are in pool D with France, Tonga and Japan and currently sit 8th on the HSBC World Rugby 7s Series table with 50 points. The pressure is building for Ben Gollings and the boys, with fans at home getting restless for some Fiji magic. In any event, we tip Samoa to win the Sydney 7s. They are playing excellent rugby 7s and are just one lucky bounce away from winning another title. Tonga is in a tough Pool, where they will be hard pressed to win a game against Fiji, France and Japan, all regulars on the HSBC 7s Series. In netball – Australia will meet New Zealand in tomorrow’s Quad Series final, after sealing a “scrappy” 65-48 win over tournament hosts, South Africa in their last pool game yesterday. While the win came with relative ease, concern remains for star Australian shooter, Sophie Garbin who was monstered in a “Springbok-like” hit in the third quarter. In football – the hype around Arsenal has ramped up after their thrilling last gasp 3-2 win over Man U at Emirates Stadium yesterday, a contest like in their battles past. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe is the first PSG player to score five goals in a game as the Ligue 1 giants crushed a 6th-tier amateur team 7-0 in the French Cup yesterday. In rugby league – former Panthers and Rabbitohs star, Josh Mansour who is without a contract for 2023 and still looking for a Club, was approached by the New South Wales governing Liberal Party to run in the upcoming state election in the seat of Kogarah, against Labor Party opposition leader Chris Minns. Malo and welcome to Season 4 Episode 23 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika Peoples sports on this beautiful bright and sunny Tuesday morning 24 January 2023, coming to you from paradise on the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean ! And we start with rugby - no doubt the Fiji fans have made the Hamilton 7s atmosphere electric, especially whenever Fiji Men and Women are playing, and opposition coaches and the event organisers fully appreciate it. So the New Zealand 7s is gone after 18 years in Wellington and four in Hamilton. So now what? Straight out of Hamilton Boys High School, Carlos Spencer's son, Payton is in the All Blacks 7s squad for the Sydney 7s this weekend. We ask - shouldn’t Ben Gollings be doing the same with his Fiji Men’s 7s squad – moving a couple of the older players out and injecting some young blood? In football – Frank Lampard was relieved of his duties and sacked as Everton manager yesterday. The Toffees are currently languishing in the English Premier League relegation zone, and defeats to Southampton and West Ham United looked to be the final straw for Lampard. Staying with football – in France it seems all is not kosher at PSG with reports that Lionel Messi is NOT renewing his contract, but instead still looking at offers from the MLS and Saudi Arabia. And in England where the Football Association is under pressure to place more importance on the women’s game after Liverpool’s clash with Chelsea was called off after five minutes of action due to a frozen pitch. In rugby league – with Kevin Walters under pressure, Skipper Adam Reynolds told FOX Sports that Walters’ coaching “has gone to another level” over the pre-season. Kotoni Staggs added “it’s up to us boys” to silence Walters’ critics, and Corey Oates says that blaming the coach is “just not right.” Meanwhile the Dolphins have a whopping A$2Million left in their 2023 salary cap which could see the NRL’s newest franchise sign a major cross-code star as their marquee player. Wayne Bennett has masterfully only spent around 75 per cent of his salary cap according to The Daily Telegraph. In boxing – Fox Sports Australia has broken the news that undefeated Australian Champion, Tim Tszyu will fight experienced American, Tony Harrison on Sunday 12 March in a clash in Australia of the Junior Middleweight contenders ranked 4 and 5 in the world respectively. New Zealand Women won HSBC World Rugby 7s Series gold on a dramatic final day in Hamilton with Michaela Blyde scoring a hat-trick in a 33-7 win over USA in the Cup final, while Australia claimed bronze thanks to a 33-17 victory over Ireland. While the Black Ferns lead the Women’s standings on 58 points with Australia second on 54 points and USA third on 50 points. In football – BREAKING NEWS: Lionel Messi has given his word to extend his contract with Paris Saint-Germain for two more years, rejecting a lucrative offer from Inter Miami. Meanwhile, Liverpool and Chelsea did little for their chances of climbing into the EPL’s top four with an uninspiring 0-0 draw as Everton lost another game 2-0 at West Ham and edge ever closer to relegation. In Sportsbiz – Like no other sports, the NFL is leading the way in monetizing every aspect of the new digital media space; now licensing streaming rights for their games in restaurants and bars for US$200 million. As they say in Texas, it all adds up. In boxing – the UFC is back, returning to Brazil where everyone was asking themselves after four rounds: How is Glover Teixeira still standing? How is this 43-year-old ready to go another five minutes? It ultimately ended in defeat to Jamahal Hill, the UFC’s new Light Heavyweight Champion. In tennis – “Finishing matches at four in the morning isn’t good for the players. I would also argue that it’s not good for the sport, or anyone involved in it. I do think there’s some quite simple things that can be done to change that,” Sir Andy Murray makes no excuses for how brutally physical the 2023 Australian Open was on him - and how the fallout from his 4am win over Thanasi Kokkinakis hurt him in his third round loss to Roberto Bautista Agut yesterday. Malo and welcome to Season 4 Episode 18 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika Peoples sports on this overcast and warm Wednesday morning 19 January 2023, coming to you from paradise on the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean! In rugby union – the Fijian Drua is playing the Melbourne Rebels in a trial game at Prince Charles Park, Nadi on Saturday 28 January. Ticket prices are $6 for the embankment and $12 for the grandstand, which if they are an indication of Drua home game ticket prices for 2023, is very good news indeed! In rugby league – the introduction of a transfer window has been one of the sticking points in the heated ongoing dispute regarding the collective bargaining agreement between the NRL and the players association. Players can currently sign with rivals for the 2025 season from November 2023. The NRL proposes players can sign new deals from July 2024 for 2025, plus possibly a mid-season transfer window. Dragons player Junior Amone has been stood-down by the NRL for an alleged hammer attack. Amone was charged with causing reckless grievous bodily harm in company, damaging property and stalking, after he and others chased a tradesman up a roof until he fell. You know I must confess, sometimes you just feel like doing that with some tradesman! In boxing – the 15-year-old son of Chechen dictator Ramzan Kadyrov, secured his first professional MMA victory in what fans, er pretty much all living outside Chechnya, have labeled – clearly a fixed fight. The kid also had Chechnya-born UFC superstar Khamzat Chimaev in his corner for the bout. After standing toe-to-toe with his opponent, the kid landed a jab which sent his opponent diving to the canvas. Standing over his downed opponent, the teenager threw some soft strikes that didn’t appear to be connecting in any way. Despite the limited force of the blows, which his opponent was defending well while on his back on the floor of the ring, the referee saw his life flash before his eyes and stepped in to quickly stop the fight. In football – the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 is already set for success with six months to spare. More than 500,000 tickets have been sold for the tournament, which begins 20 July 2023 in Australia and New Zealand with the final at Stadium Australia on 20 August the most sought-after match. Australia’s opener against Ireland may move from Allianz Stadium to Accor Stadium, allowing nearly 40,000 more people to attend. The competition marks the debut of Morocco, Zambia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and the Republic of Ireland. Fans from more than 120 countries have purchased tickets, with the most coming from Australia, New Zealand, the US, England and Qatar. Finally, only in Britain – the BBC’s television coverage of the FA Cup clash between Wolves and Liverpool was sabotaged after loud pornographic noises were heard during the build-up to the game on Wednesday night. BBC presenter, Gary Lineker was discussing the third-round replay in a studio at Molineux alongside pundits Paul Ince and Danny Murphy when audible sounds of a couple having loud sex broke out. The BBC later said: “We apologise to any viewers offended during the live coverage of the football this evening. We are investigating how this happened.” They know how it happened – the BBC knows everything! In rugby union – details of the Eddie Jones coup now emerging show Rugby Australia Chairman, Hamish McLennan wooing Fast Eddie to take over coaching the Wallabies from 2024, over a year ago. After the Wallabies loss to Italy, two things sealed incumbent Kiwi Head Coach, Dave Rennie’s fate; England unexpectedly sacking Jones last month and the Kiwi’s refusal to work with Fast Eddie in any capacity for the Rugby World Cup in France in September. In rugby league – there’s only two months to go until the season kicks off and every NRL team has made key signings for 2023: James Tamou is one of three Cowboys signings, but is set to become a crucial mentor for a young and exciting forward pack with his 305 games of NRL experience. In the NBA – “You feel old, don’t you? You played against my Dad,” Houston Rockets rookie Jabari Smith Jr er maybe shouldn’t have said that to Lebron James pregame, because King James erupted for a season-high 48 points with five threes, eight rebounds and nine assists to lead the LA Lakers past the Rockets 140-132 at home yesterday. In boxing – former American tennis star, Billie Jean King, 79, turned to social media to reminisce about her relationship with Muhammad Ali on his 81st birthday, which would have been today. "Whenever we would run into each other, he would whisper in my ear, 'Billie Jean, you're the queen'. He is a legend whose legacy continues today," Billie Jean King. In football – after lighting up football’s biggest stages - Real Madrid’s heaving Santiago Bernabeu stadium and the “Theatre of Dreams” at Manchester United’s Old Trafford, Cristiano Ronaldo faces a very different reality in the Saudi Pro League with some stadiums only seating 6000 fans and less exalted teams — plus some very high temperatures. But Ronaldo, 37 now, says he’s embracing the “challenge” of playing in Saudi Arabia; any inconvenience made much easier of course by the US$216Million-a-year deal he is paid by his new team, Al Nassr. Geez that’s a million dollars a day in our money! Finally, only in America – According to Court documents, NFL legend Tom Brady is among the bankrupt crypto exchange FTX’s largest individual shareholders with more than 1.1 million shares, once worth US$45Million when FTX was valued at a staggering US$32Billion in January 2022. His ex-wife Gisele has more than 686,000 shares. BOOM that’s the reason they divorced right there – she listened to him and paid millions for those shares. Malo and welcome to Season 4 Episode 16 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika Peoples sports on this warm and sunny Tuesday morning 17 January 2023, coming to you from paradise on the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean! Whoa it’s all happening down under ! Just one day before his first-round Australian Open singles match today, Nick Kyrgios withdrew yesterday and will undergo surgery on a knee injury. “I’m devastated obviously. It’s my home tournament and obviously winning the tournament in doubles and playing the best tennis of my life probably. All I can do is my best to come back … It's brutal,” he said in a hastily-arranged press conference yesterday afternoon. And yesterday morning – Rugby Australia dropped a bomb, announcing that Eddie Jones would be returning as Wallabies Head Coach and that Dave Rennie’s time was over. “It is a major coup for Australian Rugby to have the best coach in the world return home to coach the iconic Wallabies,” AR Chairman, Hamish McLennan said. “Eddie instinctively understands the Australian way of playing rugby – this represents an opportunity to secure a coach of immense expertise and experience at the biggest competitions, and we did not want to miss it,” McClennan added. In rugby league – Stephen Crichton has had enough, so yesterday he dropped a bomb on the Panthers announcing he would be gone in 2024. Despite an increased NRL salary cap the Panthers have stuffed him around. The 22-year-old will now likely field much larger offers from rival Clubs up to A$900,000 per season. And the possible suitors – Dolphins, Bulldogs and the Tigers. Meanwhile England enforcer, Billy Vunipola will leave the Premiership following the Rugby World Cup in France later this year. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the tough Saracens back rower will move to either France or Japan. However, don’t rule out him turning up in Super Rugby or the NRL. In boxing – Australian boxing, brothers Tim and Nikita Tszyu may finally fight together on the same card if a WBO world title fight comes to Australia early in 2023 with Tim challenging for the WBO interim super welterweight title against either undefeated Russian Bakhram Murtazaliev or American Tony Harrison in Australia in March. Only in the US – Hollywood actor and stand-up comedian, DL Hughley has criticized the UFC, along with its broadcast partner ESPN, for declining to comment on Dana White slapping his wife. “If that had been a brotha, it’d be NONSTOP coverage, dredging up a playground fight from the 3rd grade, scouring old tweets, you name it. #DanaWhite ‘s ENTIRE LIFE is immersed in brutal , physical violence, he’s amassed a fortune from it. Where are the salacious headlines?? Where’s the pressure?? Ohhhhh, he apologized. #WhitePrivilege (PUN INTENDED) scores a 1st round knockout yet again.” Word bro word! How about this for an “only in the US” story from down under - the AFL Greater West Sydney Giants newly appointed Head of Development, Robbie Chancellor has been busted by Police buying less than a gram of cocaine for A$300, on 10 December. As first reported by the Daily Mail, Chancellor bought the cocaine while going for a jog near his home in Sydney’s inner-west. So there’s one Head of Development gone – maybe he was over-developed?
