Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 74 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a cloudy, bright and warm Saturday morning 17 June 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby: In the first Super Rugby Pacific semi-final last night in Christchurch: The Blues were absolutely hammered silly by the Crusaders 52-15, tarnishing a couple of north Islanders All Blacks chances. Today we tip the Chiefs to chill out those awful Brumbies in funky Hamilton to set up an all-Kiwi grand final again! In rugby league: Brad Fittler is approaching the biggest game of his ORIGIN career as a player and coach in ORIGIN II, under immense pressure to win, but his legacy for NSW is already set in stone. The 51-year-old played a record 31 games for the Blues from 1990 to 2004 and captained NSW to multiple series wins in a period of dominance that saw Queensland win just four series from the time he debuted to when he hung up his boots. As a Coach, Fittler came to the rescue of his State in 2018 with Queensland winning 11 of the 12 ORIGIN Series before that, dating back to 2006. Frddie restored pride in New South Wales, winning back-to-back ORIGIN Series for the first time since 2005. And Cowboys superstar Jason Taumalolo makes his timely return, as his side take on a depleted Panthers outfit at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville this weekend. The Tongan enforcer has missed the last eight weeks with a knee injury, but makes a welcome return for the Cowboys, who will be without ORIGIN representatives Reuben Cotter, Valentine Holmes, Murray Taulagi, Jeremiah Nanai and Reece Robson. In Football: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK are all set to broadcast the 2023 Women’s World Cup from Australia and New Zealand starting 20 July. “This new deal will provide huge exposure for women’s football,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said, “which is a top priority for us.” Infantino had previously threatened to black out the tournament in Europe’s biggest soccer markets due to lowball offers from the country’s media companies. In SportsBiz: Organisers expect 22,000 fans a day when the US Open begins on Thursday, boasting the largest purse in its history, totaling US$20Million, up from US$17.5M last year. On Sunday, the winner will take home US$3.6M, nearly half a million dollars more than how much winner, Matt Fitzpatrick earned last year. And in boxing: Tim Tszyu fronted journalists at yesterday’s media conference to reveal, that after the dog bite just three weeks ago, he said that he now felt like “I have a pit bull inside me.” The fighter, who underwent emergency surgery for the dog bite added, “As soon as I put on the suit this morning for the press conference I felt it,” he grinned. “Someone is getting bitten.” What else can we say except, “Ola, ole hombre, or as Pit Bull would say – woof woof”! Bulldogs halfback Matt Burton, who made his NSW Blues debut last year is the now the 18th player.Maroons Assistant Coach Cameron Smith has opened up on why they picked Cowboys gun Jeremiah Nanai over veteran backrower Felise Kaufusi. Both players featured in Queensland’s 2022 series win.Kaufusi started this year with a bang, but has since been hampered by suspensions. Cameron Smith explained it was a “lack of football” that saw Kaufusi out of the Maroons team.“There’s just no other reason that you can come up with to say why he’s not here, he just hasn’t played enough games,” Smith said on SEN.In rugby: Our World Famous Tips for the Super Rugby Pacific semi-finals this weekend in Aotearoa: The Blues to sunburn the Crusaders in the heat of Christchurch tomorrow night and the Chiefs to chill out the Brumbies in funky Hamilton on Saturday to set up an all-Kiwi grand final again! In Football: A moment of Messi Magic from Inter Miami and global superstar Lionel after only 79 seconds, opened the scoring for 2022 World Cup Champions Argentina who went on to claim a 2-0 win over the Socceroos, in front of a sold-out crowd of nearly 70,000 fans – not in Sydney or in Argentina, but in Beijing yesterday. The South American giants showed exactly why they are world champions, playing with freedom and dazzling style at times with exceptional individual quality, and they have now lost just once in 46 games, a stunning run dating back to 2019.As for why the game was played in Beijing, call it sports washing or whatever, Argentina’s football association pocketed US$100Million from the game.In SportsBiz: The total prize pool for Wimbledon will rise 11% from last year to a record US$56.5Million with Singles Champs winning US$3Million each – Men ans Women, while those losing in the first round get paid US$69,500 each, to go home.Wimbledon’s prize pool now compares more favorably to other tennis Grand Slams. Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 72 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on another cloudy, but bright Thursday morning 15 June 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby league: “We can’t wait,” Matiu Walters, SIX60’s lead singer and guitarist said, after the NRL announced that New Zealand’s multi-platinum selling and biggest band will be playing the pre-game show for ORIGIN III at Sydney’s Accor Stadium on Wednesday 12 July! So all you SIX60 fans get out there - tickets are available from A$59 for adults and A$165 for families via NRL.com/tickets. Meanwhile in Queensland, ORIGIN great Sam Thaiday remembers the accountant, Cameron Smith, “Everything was measured with Smithy. It's funny, I can remember more of Cam's speeches before a game than I do of Mal Meninga’s. “Cam was the guy that a lot of the time throughout my career, he was the last word before we ran out onto the field. And it was kind of the way that he said things and the things that he said that really inspired you and wanted you to get out there.” In rugby: Winners of the Fiji Airways Fijian Drua Awards night held in Nadi last night: The Coach’s Player of the Year: Tevita Ikanivere, Player’s Player of the Year: Isoa Nasilasila, Rookie of the Year: Iosefo Masi, Try of the Year: Ratu Meli Derenalagi and the Fan Player of the Year: Selestino Ravutaumada. Only comment – wondering about the Fijiana Drua Awards Night. In Football: Check out the eye-watering salaries the Top 5 players in La Liga earn: From Polish Striker, Robert Lewandowski at Barcelona on US$435,732-per-week through Jan Oblak at Atletico Madrid and Brazilian star Vinicius Jr at Real Madrid also equal fifth, to Luka Modric at Real Madrid on US$457,402-per-week, 3. David Alaba at Real Madrid on US$470,491-per-week, 2. Toni Kroos at Real Madrid on US$509,803-per-week, and top of the pile Frenkie De Jong at Barcelona banks a cool US$784,443-per-week. In SportsBiz: FIFA is close to securing UK media rights deals with the BBC and ITV for the upcoming Women’s World Cup. The agreements, according to Bloomberg, would see the broadcasters pay an estimated US$10Million to air the upcoming event, just 6% of the comparable figure paid for the Men’s FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. FIFA President Gianni Infantino previously called initial rights bids for the tournament — some as low as 1% of bids for the Men’s World Cup — “a slap in the face” given the ongoing growth in the women’s game. Infantino initially threatened a broadcasting blackout of England, Spain, Italy, Germany, and France. Meanwhile in the US, FOX Sports has already sold 90% of its ad inventory for US coverage of the Women’s World Cup, with Ad sales up 50% on the 2019 tournament. The US Women’s National Team, which won both the 2015 and 2019 FIFA World Cups will be looking for a three-peat starting 20 July. In boxing: One day after Tim Tszyu promised to knock out Mexico’s top Super Welterweight, Carlos Ocampo within five rounds in their big bash this Sunday, the challenger has arrived Down Under and hit back from his Gold Coast camp, promising to “embarrass” Tim Tszyu in front of his thousands of fans. Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 71 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on another cloudy, but bright Wednesday morning 14 June 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In the NBA: After 47 long years, the wait is over - the Denver Nuggets are NBA Champions, defeating the Miami Heat 94-99 in Game 5 at home in Denver yesterday to claim a 4-1 series victory. Serbian superstar Nikola Jokic, who was later crowned NBA Finals MVP, led the way for the Nuggets, finishing Game 5 with 28 points, 16 rebounds and four assists. “It’s good, it’s good. The job is done now. We can go home now,” the understated Jokic said post-game. In rugby league: After missing Queensland's 26-18 victory in ORIGIN I in Adelaide due to suspension, the Cowboys breakout player from 2022, Jeremiah Nanai returns for ORIGIN II in the second row as replacement for Tom Gilbert who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the series opener. New NSW Blues Halfback, Mitchell Moses says that he’s ready to help the Blues create ORIGIN history at Suncorp on 21 June after making an undeniable case for the NSW No.7 jersey in the Parramatta Eels 34-12 defeat of the Canterbury Bulldogs on Monday. In rugby: What happens if one of the Super Rugby semifinals this week ends in a draw? The match goes to extra time. With two tight contests between the Crusaders and Blues in Christchurch on Friday and then Chiefs-Brumbies in Hamilton the following night you wouldn’t rule it out. Okay, what happens if the match is drawn at the end of extra time? The match goes to a 10 minute 'sudden death' period. And if it’s still a draw after that? In Football: Kylian Mbappe has reportedly made a bombshell call on his future which will put Europe’s biggest Clubs on red alert. Football transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reported the French superstar has informed Paris Saint-Germain he does not intend to extend his deal with the club. It means Mbappe will become a free agent in June 2024. However, Romano reports PSG have no intentions to lose Mbappe on a free deal, which means the French club could choose to cash in on their prized asset this summer, or in the January transfer window. In SportsBiz: Denver Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke has the midas touch in pro sports. Their NBA Championship title win is the fifth championship won by a team that he owns, since the beginning of 2022. The Colorado Avalanche won last year’s Stanley Cup after the Los Angeles Rams claimed victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI. Kroenke’s Colorado Mammoth won the 2022 National Lacrosse League Cup and one of his e-sports teams, the Los Angeles Guerrillas, took home a title in the Call of Duty League last year as well. Ummm lacrosse ok, but e-sports? In boxing: Only days out from his big bash on the Gold Coast, Aussie champ, Tim Tszyu fronted media for the first time in fight week – and delivered a KO prediction for Mexico’s No.1 ranked Super Welterweight Carlos Ocampo. A confident Tszyu said that he will need no more than five rounds to finish the Mexican. What can we say except, “Ola, ole hombre”! Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 70 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a cloudy, but bright Tuesday morning 13 June 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. We start today with Tennis and in particular, paying tribute to Novak Djokovic, who today stands alone at the pinnacle of Men's tennis, after defeating Casper Ruud to win his 23rd grand slam title at the French Open on Sunday. Spanish maestro, Rafael Nadal has 22 titles and the cool Swiss Roger Federer has retired with 20, followed by the American Pete Sampras on 14. Djokovic claimed his first Major tennis title at the Australian Open in 2008. The Serbian is also the first man ever to win at least three slam titles at all the major tournaments — a measure of his all-round greatness. In rugby league: The Eels electrified the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium alright 36-12. Meanwhile, the Maroons Coach Billy Slater has named his team for ORIGIN II at Suncorp next week, with Jeremiah Nanai, Moeaki Fotuaika and Xavier Coates slotting in to the starting 17 to replace the injured Jai Arrow, Tom Gilbert and Selwyn Cobbo. And Brad Fittler’s NSW Blues team announcement will drop at 11am today with some big changes: Tevita Pangai Junior has lost his spot and Nicho Hynes axed completely, while two genuine bolters make their Blues debuts - Eels star Mitchell Moses replaces Nathan Cleary and Rabbitohs veteran Damien Cook returns for the injured Apisai Koroisau. In rugby: The same four teams that made the Super Rugby Pacific semis 2022 have repeated the feat this year, with the Crusaders hosting the Blues and the Chiefs hosting the Brumbies. Outside of that, the Fijian Drua making the Top 8 in only their second season has to be the standout. In Football: UEFA has been heavily criticized for staging a major event – their Champions League grand final, in such a poorly-equipped stadium, more than 20Km away from the centre of host city, Istanbul. Fans described the event as a “dangerous mess”, which descended into chaos and put their safety at risk. Among a series of serious issues faced at Istanbul’s highly criticised Ataturk Stadium for Manchester City’s victory over Inter were: · Fans forced to travel on shuttles for up to three hours to the game, then abandon transport to climb over scrubland and “building site” surroundings to make kick-off · Only two concession stands for an entire end of fans, creating waits for bottled water for up to two hours · Fewer than 20 toilets serving 20,000 people in the fan zones · And a total lack of guidance and minimal travel options post-game, which left fans traversing a mile of slip road to hail gridlocked taxis, which charged up to €200 to get back to town So Churchill Park in Lautoka isn’t so bad after all. In SportsBiz: The price of relegation from the Premier League is high — for Leeds United, it’s about US$400Million. That figure is the difference in the reported valuations of the Club now that 49ers Enterprises — the ownership group of the San Francisco 49ers — has officially agreed to purchase 100% of the team. Leeds majority owner Andrea Radrizzani has accepted a deal that values the club at US$209M, according to The Athletic. Had Leeds remained in the Premier League, that number could have been as high as US$625M. Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 69 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a cloudy, but warm Monday morning 12 June 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby league: Powerful Fijian front rower, Tui Kamikamica opened the scoring with a try that the TV commentators thought that he may have knocked on, so to shut them up, the Stormers scored eight more tries at AAMI Park yesterday to stun the Sharks 10-54. Our World Famous Tip for the remaining NRL game to play today: The Eels to electrify the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium. Meanwhile in probably nothing more than a storm in a teacup, the Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that Tim Sheens’ immediate future as Wests Tigers Head Coach, is in doubt with an early exit on the cards. Apparently Sheens is frustrated with the Club’s management following the departure of his trusted accomplice and Recruitment Manager Warren McDonnell, who left during the week, having spent three decades in Leichhardt. In boxing: American Teofimo Lopez defeated Britain’s previously unbeaten Josh Taylor by unanimous decision yesterday to capture the WBO Light-Welterweight World title. Judges handed the 25-year-old Brooklyn fighter the victory by scores of 115-113 on two cards and 117-111. Lopez improved to 19-1 and became a two-division world champion with his new crown. In Football and SportsBiz again: Lionel Messi’s move to Inter Miami is already having a major impact on Major League Soccer: Ticket sales and prices for the seven away games Miami is scheduled to play are skyrocketing, some as much as tenfold, with get-in prices in Los Angeles already at US$500. Charlotte FC and Atlanta United are opening the upper levels of their stadiums to allow for full capacity crowds, instead of their usual 30,000 fans each, while Orlando City is using its home game against Inter Miami to drive season-ticket sales. Thanks to Messi Magic, Inter Miami could even play some of their MLS home games at the Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium to accommodate more fans than at their 19,000-capacity home Stadium. MLS broadcast partners, Apple — which reportedly helped facilitate Messi’s signing with a revenue-sharing component — will no doubt benefit from Messi Magic as well. Everybody was scratching their heads when Apple paid US$2.5Billion to live stream MLS games, but now the MLS boasts the most popular soccer player in the world, it makes Apple look really smart. And finally in rugby: The New York City 7s with a record winners cash prize of F$2.2Million, has been cancelled due to poor air quality across the big apple, from hundreds of bushfires raging across parts of Canada. However, critics point to the Promoter’s prior record of big talk, no action, because the reality is, the bushfires will die down by the time the tournament was scheduled to be held anyway! In more positive rugby news - at the Fiji International Women’s Association’s annual fundraising ball, at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva on Saturday night, four Fijiana Drua jerseys went for $18,000 at auction. Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 68 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a cloudy, but bright and warm Sunday morning 11 June 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.  In rugby: So the Super Rugby Pacific semi-finals have been decided: The Crusaders will host the Blues in Christchurch and the Chiefs host the Brumbies in Hamilton. Results from the quarter-finals yesterday: The Brumbies won 37-33, but not without controversy, after the Hurricanes dynamic Captain Ardie Savea claimed a try with the last play of the day, but it was ruled out by who else – the one-eyed Aussie TMO! Meanwhile, the Chiefs 29-20 the Reds, and the Fijian Drua made the worst start ever in Christchurch, with Teti Tela committing the unforgiveable error of his kickoff not going 10M and the Crusaders scored from there within two minutes, plus another try a couple of minutes later and it was game over red rover – Crusaders 49-8. To rub salt into the Fijian Drua wound, for beating the Crusaders in Lautoka all those weeks ago, the Crusaders were down to 14 men for the last 20 minutes of the game and then 13 due to injuries and no more replacements! The Blues 41-12 NSW Waratahs on Friday. In rugby league: Just as he did before ORIGIN I, Jarome Luai orchestrated a 30-6 thrashing of the Roosters last night to put himself in the box seat for the NSW Blues No.6 jersey. At Suncorp, the Newcastle Knights were leading 20-12 with 12 minutes remaining, when Brendan Piakura scored his first try for the Broncos to set up a grandstand finish, followed by Ezra Mam producing a match-winning flick pass in the 77th minute, which resulted in an incredible 24-20 victory, which Broncos fans will be talking about for years to come. And despite Souths losing to Saint George 36-30, Hooker Damien Cook is in line for an ORIGIN recall after Apisai Koroisau broke his jaw on Thursday. The Dolphins meanwhile were handed their biggest defeat so far, when they were thumped 58-18 by Manly Sea Eagles on Friday night. And the NZ Warriors rudely spoiled Jarrod Croker’s milestone 300th NRL game, scoring a 36-14 win over the Raiders in Canberra with a dominant second-half display. Our World Famous Tips for the remaining two NRL games to play: The Storm to water blast the Sharks at AAMI Park today and the Eels to electrify the Bulldogs at Accor Stadium tomorrow. In boxing: The Bronze Bomber, Deontay Wilder took on the iconic Punch Machine challenge, stepped up and hammered the punch ball with his right hand for a score of 930 out of a possible 1000. Not happy with this, he stepped again up for a second attempt and smashed the machine so hard it didn’t register his punch properly, glitched completely before showing an incorrect score of 418. And finally in Football and SportsBiz again: The fight for equal pay in international football just took another major step forward. Starting with this year’s Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, FIFA is guaranteeing every player at least US$30,000 — that’s more than twice the average club salary for a pro women’s player. And that’s not all - members of the winning team will receive US$270,000 each - amazing. Go FIFA Go Girls Go! Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.  In rugby: Our World Famous tips for the Super Rugby Pacific quarter-finals: the Blues to kung fu the NSW Waratahs tonight, and on Saturday the Chiefs to judo the Reds, the Fijian Drua to jiu jitsu the Crusaders in freezing Christchurch and the Brumbies to karate the Hurricanes in Canberra. More on the 45-man Fiji Water Flying Fijians squad to the RWC2023 released overnight on Background Buzz at the end of this podcast. In rugby league: NRL games this weekend: On Saturday - St George Dragons vs South Sydney Rabbitohs at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium at 3pm, the Broncos vs Newcastle Knights at Suncorp Stadium at 5.30pm, the Sydney Roosters vs Penrith Panthers at Allianz Stadium at 7.35pm. On Sunday - the Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks at AAMI Park at 2pm and on Monday – it’s the Bulldogs vs the Eels at Accor Stadium at 4.05pm. In Football and SportsBiz: Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami debut may come as soon as 21 July for a Leagues Cup match against Mexican Club, Cruz Azul in Miami. Before the news was even official, the get-in price for that game skyrocketed to US$329 on Wednesday, up 1,034% from Tuesday’s regular price of US$29. Inter Miami added one million Instagram followers Wednesday as word spread that the legendary soccer player was joining them — doubling the team’s audience on the platform in one day. Messi reportedly turned down nearly US$400Million from a Saudi Arabian Club to join Inter Miami where he will receive a percentage of all new subscriptions to MLS Season Pass on Apple TV+, according to the Wall Street Journal. The streaming service is in the first year of a 10-year, US$2.5Billion media rights deal that is now much more valuable with Messi playing games it exclusively broadcasts worldwide. The Athletic reported the deal could also include profit-sharing from ADIDAS, which renewed its apparel deal with MLS before this season. Messi owns a home in Miami and has ties with Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham Inter Miami has matches in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Orlando, Chicago, and Charlotte after 21 July, as part of 17 away games. And finally in boxing: Speaking through an interpreter, Mexico’s top ranked Super Welterweight fighter, Carlos Ocampo warned Aussie champ, Tim Tyszu to “watch his arm and don’t make excuses after the fight about it,” as he plans to knock him out in their fight on the Gold Coast on 18 June. So where is this dog that bit Tyszu? What kinda dog is it? And the $60Million question – why did it bite him? And that’s a wrap! Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 66 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a drizzly but warm Thursday morning 08 June 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. And we start with BREAKING NEWS in football: BBC Sport and American media hub - The Athletic, have cited multiple sources reporting Lionel Messi is headed to the MLS to join US Club, Inter Miami, with one source adding his MLS debut would be on 21 July against the Mexican Club Cruz Azul. This would be the soccer superstar’s first time playing for a team outside of Europe and South America. Neither Messi, PSG or Inter Miami have made an official announcement. In rugby: As the special Fiji Airways charter flight from Nadi to Christchurch and return fills up with Fijian Drua fans from all over the country, Fijians living in Aotearoa are also making plans to head south in numbers, to lend their support to the cause as temperatures continue to drop in Christchurch. In rugby league: Parramatta Eels star, Dylan Brown has been stood down by the NRL just hours after he appeared in Court over allegations he touched a woman without her consent at Sydney’s Golden Sheaf hotel last Saturday night. Our World Famous Tips for NRL games tonight: Wests Tigers to curry goat the Gold Coast Titans at Cbus Super Stadium and tomorrow the Canberra Raiders to curry duck the NZ Warriors at GIO Stadium and the Dolphins to curry sea eagle Manly at 4 Pines Park. In the aftermath of their ORIGIN I meltdown, questions have now been raised about the NSW Blues training loads in camp, after three star players sustained soft tissue injuries around ORIGIN I. Firstly, crack centre Latrell Mitchell was ruled out of ORIGIN I with a calf strain 72 hours before kick-off. Next up, South Sydney captain and champion lock, Cameron Murray went down with a groin injury playing for the Rabbitohs immediately after ORIGIN I. Finally, star Penrith halfback Nathan Cleary tore his hamstring playing for the Panthers four nights after ORIGIN I. So go figure. And finally in SportsBiz: In a bombshell agreement that caught the golf world by surprise, the US-based PGA Tour said they had signed an agreement with the Saudi owners of LIV golf and the DP World Tour to form “a new collectively owned, for-profit entity”. In doing so, the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf have ended all litigation, bringing to a close the sport’s bitter two-year rift. As for Greg Norman, he remains LIV Golf’s commissioner, but there is no higher role for him within the new entity; in reality, he has been pushed aside. A source told Sports Illustrated in the aftermath of the announcement that Norman is “not expected to be part of the venture going forward”. Ouch talk about chewed up and spat out. Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 65 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a bright and sunny Wednesday morning 07 June 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby: As huge excitement swirls around the Fijian Drua Super Rugby Pacific quarter final against the Crusaders in Christchurch, Fiji Airways has put on a special same day turnaround flight for diehard fans @ F$899 return. One word of advice, if you haven’t got thermal underwear – get some quick smart, or Men risk losing their crown jewels to frost bite! Remember how hot it was on the day the Fijian Drua beat the Crusaders in Lautoka, well the weekend weather forecast for Christchurch is for chilly temperatures well below 10 degrees and falling! In rugby league: Is it true the NSW Blues may pick Semi Radradra and Justin Olam for ORIGIN II? Brad Fittler faces the impossible task of replacing Nathan Cleary, Braith Anasta said on NRL 360 last night. The Blues have to weigh up experience and the biggest threats they can pose to Queensland in ORIGIN II versus youth and dare. So who will it be? In picking their halves combo for the do or die ORIGIN II clash at Suncorp, does Freddie stick with the incumbent Jarome Luai or throw in Cody Walker at five-eighth? His halfback options are no easier - Adam Reynolds, Nicho Hynes or Mitchell Moses? Meanwhile, Billy The Kid and the Maroons are sitting pretty in Queensland soaking up the sunshine waiting on ORIGIN II. In football: It’s official, Tottenham has signed Ange Postecoglou as their new Manager, in one of the biggest moments in Australian football history - the first Aussie Manager in the Premier League. Spurs confirmed last night that they had signed the 57-year-old from Celtic on a four-year deal, in the hope he will reinvigorate the Club and re-energise their game style. Postecoglou just completed a domestic treble in Scotland and previously coached Yokohama and Brisbane Roar to league championships, along with leading Australia to the Asian Cup title. In SportsBiz: Saudi Arabia is hoping to lure a swathe of world-famous footballers with a US$3Billion war chest, after several local Clubs were effectively taken over by the government. In addition to Karim Benzema who they signed up yesterday, and Lionel Messi in their sights, “more than ten” seasoned players including N’Golo Kante, Roberto Firmino, Sergio Ramos, Angel Di Maria, Luka Modric, Hugo Lloris, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets have been approached, a source said. The oil-rich kingdom has ambitions of hosting the FIFA World Cup and is betting on sports to help revamp its image. And finally in boxing: Since Andy Ruiz is still running from Deontay Wilder – last seen crossing the border into Guatemala, former two-time wannabe World Heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua may become the new WBO mandatory challenger to Tyson Fury. "That's a possibility, Joshua's right there at No 3," says World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman. As we say in Nukualofa when we’re chasing piglets for a roasting, “You can run, but you can’t hide!” For TeivovoSports.com I’m Culden Kamea – please hit the like and subscribe buttons below if you want to receive more Pasifika sports highlights on Breakfast Bites. Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 64 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a bright and sunny Tuesday morning 06 June 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby: Manusina Samoa has won the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship on the Gold Coast yesterday, upsetting favourites Fijiana 18-19, with Cassie Siataga kicking all their points – 7 conversions. So Samoa will play in WXV2 and Fiji in WXV3 of the inaugural World Rugby WXV Competition in October 2023. Samoa will be based in Cape Town, against hosts South Africa, Scotland, Japan plus the winner of Italy versus Spain and one other team from Asia. Fijiana plays in WXV3 at a venue to be determined on the same dates, against Ireland and the loser of Italy versus Spain, plus three other teams from Africa and Asia. In rugby league: It’s cruel at the top. NRL experts are already discussing who should be the next New South Wales Blues Coach if Brad Fittler loses the 2023 series. Some say Canberra Raiders Coach Ricky Stuart should return for a third stint, after coaching in 2005 and 2011-12, someone – obviously a Maroons fan, has thrown up former Roosters assistant, Jason Ryles for the Blues. A couple of experts – maybe looking for a job, argue the job had become too big for the limited time for any part time coach. In football: Fabrizio Romano, one of world football’s most reliable and connected sources of transfer market news, announced on social media yesterday afternoon, that a contract offer – including the option of a third season – has been made to the all-conquering Celtic and former Socceroos boss, Ange Postecoglou, who has verbally agreed, to become Tottenham’s new Manager. In SportsBiz: English Premier League Champions 2016, Leicester City, valued @ US$781Million, before their unceremonious fall from grace from the EPL, can expect that number to slump next season as they operate without a share of the lucrative EPL media rights. And in the NBA: A one-man show from Nikola Jokic was not enough for the Denver Nuggets yesterday as a dominant 36-point fourth quarter saw the Miami Heat take a 111-108 win in Game 2 to tie the NBA Finals. The incredible Jokic, scored 41 points, made 11 rebounds and four assists in the game, making NBA history as the first center to record 500-plus points and 100-plus assists in a single post-season. And finally in boxing: World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman expects a mandatory challenge to be ordered in near future for WBC Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury, who has no fights finalized. Last year, the WBC ordered a series of eliminators to establish a new mandatory challenger for the Gypsy King, in which Andy Ruiz won a twelve round decision over Luis Ortiz, and Deontay Wilder crushed Robert Helenius in one round. Wilder and Ruiz were then ordered to meet in an eliminator, but the two sides never came close to a deal with the Mexican last seen running away over the horizon, across the border and south through Mexico into Guatamala! Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 63 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a bright and sunny Monday morning 05 June 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby: After their 41-17 drubbing of the Reds on Saturday in Suva, all the talk around the tanoa is about how many local players will force their way into the Flying Fijians for the Rugby World Cup in France starting in less than 99 days First name on the list Smokin’ Jo Tamani, followed by . . More on my selection at the end of this podcast! In rugby league: Semi Valemei had a club debut to remember as the Wing scored a hat-trick to go with 144M run, six tackle busts and two linebreaks for the Cowboys who stunned the Melbourne Storm 20-45 in an emphatic win at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville to snap a two-game losing skid. It was the most points the Cowboys have scored over the Storm and the most Melbourne had given up since 2003, leaving Coach Craig Bellamy with a very sore head. The Panthers hung on for a gutsy 26-18 win over the Dragons last night, but they lost Nathan Cleary in the 16th minute of the game to a hamstring injury which will likely keep the NSW Blues State of Origin star out of ORIGIN II on 21 June. You gotta ask why – why was Cleary even playing just four days after ORIGIN I? In SportsBiz: The South Australia Government paid the NRL millions of dollars to host ORIGIN for the second time in four years, after also hosting in 2020, but they’ve failed to sell-out the game. ORIGIN has also been taken to Perth and Melbourne in recent years, but New South Wales - okay Sydney, hasn’t hosted two games in a series since 2016. The top brass in the NRL are talking up a big game taking the NRL to Vegas – seriously, can it even grow beyond Australia? One more thing – I feel it would be a very smart move, as well as very deserving, for Simon and the FRU to invite Mick Byrne into the Flying Fijians coaching team as an assistant, even if just as a consultant. Mick Byrne is a very big reason why this Fijian Drua team is in the Super Rugby Pacific quarter finals in only its second year – as such, he is probably the Super Rugby Pacific Coach of the Year! Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 62 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a bright and sunny Sunday morning 04 June 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby: The Fijian Drua is the talk of the southern hemisphere rugby world, after they whacked the Queensland Reds 41-17 at home in Suva, Fiji yesterday to finish seventh in only their second year. For the record, the Super Rugby Pacific 2023 table, with the Top 8 qualifying for the quarter-finals are: 1. the Chiefs, 2. Crusaders, 3. Blues, 4. Brumbies, 5. Hurricanes and 6. Waratahs. · The Fijian Drua 7th on 26 points · The Reds finish 8th on 24 points · the Highlanders 9th on 24 points · Western Force 10th on 22 points · The Rebels 11th on 21 points · Moana Pasifika 12th on 8 points So now on to the quarter-finals where the Blues host the NSW Waratahs on Friday at 7.35pm, and on Saturday the Chiefs host the Reds at 4.35pm, the Crusaders host the Fijian Drua at 7.05pm in Christchurch and the Brumbies host the Hurricanes at 9.35pm. In rugby league: Crack Broncos Centre, Kotoni Staggs reminded everyone of his ORIGIN credentials with a quite brilliant performance against the Sharks, tormenting them all night, finishing with a whopping 212M run, to go with seven tackle busts, two linebreaks, a try assist and a try in a brilliant outing. TV commentator, Michael Ennis believes Staggs is playing better now than when he debuted for the NSW Blues last year, after the Broncos beat the Sharks 12-20. And an Alex Johnston hat-trick and 30 unanswered points in the second half helped the South Sydney Rabbitohs to a big 46-28 win over the Gold Coast Titans at Cbus Super Stadium. However, it wasn’t all rosy for the Bunnies as they lost ORIGIN stars Jai Arrow and Cameron Murray to serious injuries. In football: Manchester City Skipper and Serbian midfield star, Ilkay Gundogan scored the fastest-ever goal in an FA Cup Final, after just 12 seconds and then incredibly, scored the winner for a 2-1 win over Man U at Wembley this morning. In SportsBiz: Staying with the FA Cup winners Manchester City won 2-1 versus Man U this morning, for which Pep G’s team will receive US$2.5Million on top of the US$2.4M each team has already earned throughout the tournament. Runners-up Man U will receive $1.25M. Each team was allotted 30,500 tickets, with many sold for much more than face value, which started as low as US$52, with secondary ticket websites had get-in prices above US$500, with some tickets as high as US$5000. In the NBA: Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, Nikola Jokic of Serbia, says he felt comfortable during his first NBA Finals appearance as he led the Denver Nuggets to a Game 1 win over the Miami Heat 93-104, tallying a triple-double with 27 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds. In boxing: World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Oleksandr Usyk is set to become boxing’s biggest earner, in pole position to bank more money than any other fighter on the planet, after signing a deal with Skills Entertainment in Saudi Arabia. The move will not directly impact Usyk’s already scheduled WBA, IBF and WBO Heavyweight defense against Englishman Daniel Dubois (19-1, 18KOs) on 26 August in Poland. Show me the money babe! Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula & Welcome to Season 05 Episode 61 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a bright & sunny Saturday morning 03 June 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby: So far so good for the Fijian Drua with wins last night for the Blues over the Highlanders & the Brumbies against the Rebels; the destiny of the Fijian Drua is in their hands this afternoon when they take on the Reds at 4.35pm in Suva, Fiji. In rugby league: When the New South Wales Blues lost last year’s ORIGIN I, Brad Fittler was quick to respond with mass changes. Matt Burton, Angus Crichton, Clint Gutherson, Jordan McLean, Victor Radley, Siosifa Talakai & Jake Trbojevic were all brought into the squad for game two, with the changes achieving the desired effect of the Blues romping to a 44-12 win to level the series. Meanwhile, Queensland Rugby League has been fined A$30,000 for breach of NRL rules after having 14 players on the field in a bizarre moment of confusion during Wednesday’s ORIGIN I where the Maroons trainers botched an injury change with Tom Gilbert. The QRL has five business days to respond. In football: Inter Miami has declined to comment on speculation over a bid for Lionel Messi as they unveiled their new Argentine interim coach Javier Morales yesterday. Miami sacked their English Coach, former Manchester United player, Phil Neville on Thursday after Miami’s fourth straight loss left them stranded at the bottom of the Eastern Conference & ranked 27th of 29 teams in MLS, with fans having turned against him. The David Beckham co-owned Club has long been linked with a bid for Messi, who is expected to leave Paris Saint-Germain when his contract runs out at the end of this season. & in 47 years in the NBA, the Denver Nuggets have won only two postseason series, but never made an NBA Finals until this year, where they had an estimated franchise value of US$1.9Million, 22nd in the NBA. With the arrival of star center, Nikola Jokić & their rise to unprecedented heights, things are changing in Denver: They have sold out full-season tickets for next season & the Denver Chamber of Commerce projects a US$22Million infusion in the city’s downtown business due to the Nuggets’ Finals appearance. In boxing: US boxing superstar, Gervonta Davis was jailed yesterday, for moving into the Four Seasons Hotel in Baltimore & then a luxury condo he recently purchased in Baltimore to serve a sentence of 90 days home detention, plus the rest - three years probation & 200 hours of community service for causing a hit-&-run accident in November 2020 in Baltimore, his hometown. A Baltimore Circuit Judge, ordered Davis to spend the 90 days at the one bedroom home of his longtime trainer & father figure, Calvin Ford. Unfortunately, Davis’ attorney, didn’t request permission for a change of location. You gotta hand it to Davis for trying – 90 days in a Four Seasons Hotel beats 90 days in a one bedroom house with your Coach any day! Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 60 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a bright and sunny Friday morning 02 June 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby: Our World Famous Tips for the key mid-table games in the last round of Super Rugby Pacific 2023 this weekend: The Brumbies to bumblebee the Rebels, the Blues to buckaroo the Highlanders, the Fijian Drua to rope-a-dope the Reds in Suva and the Chiefs to chingchang the Force. So the usual suspects will finish at the top – the Chiefs, the Crusaders, the Blues, the Brumbies, Hurricanes and the New South Wales Waratahs in that order from first to sixth. In rugby league: The Maroon’s gritty 26-18 win over the NSW Blues in Adelaide Wednesday night was no exception for 28-year-old Cameron Munster, quick to deflect praise onto his teammates. But brushing his modesty aside reveals an undeniable truth: Munster is becoming a bona fide ORIGIN legend, Another tense ORIGIN battle, another Maroons miracle comeback — and once again it was Munster in the thick of the action. Talk about pressure, NSW Blues Coach Brad Fittler must now pick up the pieces and head into ORIGIN II at Suncorp Stadium needing to create history to win the series from here. The reality is that the NSW Blues have never won ORIGIN II in Brisbane and gone on to win a decider. In football: American soccer teams are quickly becoming some of the most valuable in the global game. Forbes’ 2023 list of most valuable football Clubs highlights European giants, Real Madrid and Manchester United as surpassing US$6Billion in value each. The list also includes three Major League Soccer teams in the top 20 for the first time. LAFC ranked 17th on the list @ US$1Billion valuation, followed by fellow California MLS team, the LA Galaxy @ US$925Million and Atlanta United @ US$850M 19th. In the NBA: Tickets for Game One of the NBA Finals are unsurprisingly much cheaper on the secondary market than last year’s series between the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics. As of yesterday afternoon, the average resale ticket price for today’s matchup between the Miami Heat and the Denver Nuggets at home is US$1288 compared to last year’s average resale ticket price of US$1999. However, many experts expect ticket prices to zoom as Denver chases its first ever NBA title. Already, some VIP courtside seats are selling for US$20,000-plus. Denver fans haven’t seen the Nuggets play at home since mid-May, when they went up 2-0 on the Lakers on the way to a series sweep. The Heat, meanwhile, are fresh off their seven-game series with the Celtics. Finally, in SportsBiz: The ongoing legal battle between ADIDAS and Ye has taken another turn after a federal judge denied a request from the athletic apparel company, to refreeze US$75Million it paid to Ye, formerly known as Kanye West. This, after a months-long freeze on the money was lifted last week despite ADIDAS claiming the millions is at risk of never being recovered. Hey guys its Ye – that cash is gonna disappear faster than you can say “Hey Kanye”!
