Ma’lelei, talofa, bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 44 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on another cloudy, warm and bright Wednesday morning 17 May 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby: Super Rugby Pacific Round 12 games this weekend: Starting on Friday, Moana Pasifika host the Crusaders and the Reds host the Blues. On Saturday, the Highlanders host the Rebels, the Chiefs host the Hurricanes and the New South Wales Waratahs host the Fijian Drua in Sydney, while on Sunday the Force host the Brumbies. In rugby league: So Saint George Dragons sacked Head Coach, Anthony Griffin yesterday. The biggest losers are their loyal fans, who once again miss out this season with their finals chances all but gone after it took Dragons bosses 11 rounds to make the obvious decision. Make no mistake, Saint George Dragons Captain, Ben Hunt will be looking at alternative options after Anthony Griffin’s sacking. The champion no.7 is contracted until the end of 2025 with the Red V, but there will be rival clubs eyeing Hunt as a halfback. The Bulldogs perfectly fit the bill. Okay sports fans, on “Background Buzz” today, I take a closer look at how World Rugby is playing catch up with the phenomenal growth of mainstream Women’s sports like football, professional basketball, rugby league and boxing. World Rugby recently announced the first locations, dates and a vibrant new brand - WXV - the new international competition aimed at increasing the competitiveness, reach and impact of elite women’s rugby. Starting in October 2023, WXV has a clear mission – to raise the profile and competitiveness of women’s 15s rugby by providing the global platform between Rugby World Cups to increase the reach, impact and value of the sport and growing the game as a whole. Importantly, it will double the number of annual international fixtures for most competing national teams, to raise standards at Rugby World Cup 2025 and beyond. So what does all this mean for Women’s rugby in Oceania? Rugby World Cup 2021 champions, New Zealand will host the world’s top teams - England, France and Wales in the six-team Top Level WXV1 competition from 21 October through 4 November this year. The World Rugby Pacific Four Series 2023 with Australia, Canada, New Zealand and USA contesting, will determine the remaining three teams in WXV1 and the last team will drop into the WXV2 comp. Each team in WXV1 will play three games and there will be no relegation or promotion for the first two years. Meanwhile, Cape Town, South Africa will host the WXV2 competition from 14 through 28 October 2023 – same dates as WXV3, consisting of six teams playing in a cross-pool format including: · two teams from Europe – Scotland plus Italy vs Spain to determine the European teams in WXV2 and WXV3. · the fourth-placed team from the Pacific Four Series, alongside one team each from Oceania, Asia and Africa. Team Fijiana will likely qualify for WXV2 – the big question is - who else from Oceania will be in contention for this one spot – Samoa, Tonga or our sisters from Papua New Guinea? And that’s a wrap! Ma’lelei, talofa, bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 43 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on another cloudy, warm and bright Tuesday morning 16 May 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby: The big news for Fiji from the Toulouse 7s last weekend is that their Men’s 7s team qualified for the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris. More on this at the end, in my new background buzz segment. In rugby league: BREAKING NEWS – Channel 9 is reporting that the Saint George Dragons will sack Head Coach, Anthony Griffin today, with Sydney Roosters assistant Jason Ryles lined up to take over. Griffin has been facing the axe since March when the Dragons told the 56-year-old he’d have to reapply for his job. On the issue of a penalty try, he added “In our view, it’s certainly not a penalty try... We don’t believe it is warranted. Had he made a legal tackle, there’s no guarantee Olam would have scored.” And just a reminder everybody, the Rabbitohs are on top of the NRL ladder! In football: Barcelona players were chased from the pitch by angry Espanyol supporters as they celebrated their La Liga triumph, with Coach Xavi Hernandez saying it was hard to control the team’s emotions after winning. The Catalan giants thrashed Espanyol 2-4 at their home Stadium in Cornella and celebrated on the pitch at full-time, after which the home fans could not stomach so they er invaded the pitch. Okay sports fans, on my new additional segment, called “Background Buzz”, I take a closer look at international 7s rugby where the All Blacks 7s beat Argentina 19-24 to win the Toulouse 7s Men’s title, making it another Kiwi double. The Fiji Men’s 7s team qualified for the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris after beating Spain 15-26 for 9th place. Argentina also qualified for the 2024 Olympics. So how does the HSBC 7s Series table look now with only the London 7s to go this weekend at Twickenham? New Zealand on 186 points from five Gold, two Silver and one Bronze medal finishes from 11 HSBC 7s Series tournaments so far, is in some form. Right now the Kiwis are on a hot streak of three back-to-back Gold medal wins in Hong Kong, Singapore and now Toulouse. Argentina are second on 159 points, France are 3rd on 139 and qualified automatically for the Olympics as host. Fiji Men in 4th spot have qualified with 138 points, based on three bronze medal finishes and one silver from Hong Kong. Australia is 5th on 125 points, Samoa is in 6th spot on 116 points, same as South Africa. Relative newcomers to the HSBC 7s Series, Ireland lead the rest, including USA, on 104 points in 8th place. Of interest to our little rugby corner of the world is that, Australia should grab the 4th qualification spot for Paris 2024 in London. They can do so because remember, France are a automatic qualifier as Olympic Games host. This is huge for Oceania, because it leaves the door open for Samoa who have had a quite outstanding rugby 7s resurgence of late, under mercurial Coach Brian Lima, to easily qualify for the Olympic Games for the first time. I won’t talk about Fiji’s chances at Paris 2024 for 7s Gold or Bronze or better for Fijiana, that will come later after the London 7s. And that’s a wrap! Ma’lelei, talofa, bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 42 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on another cloudy, warm and bright Monday morning 15 May 2023.Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby: The HSBC Toulouse 7s results overnight in the Women’s comp: The Black Ferns were simply too good again, winning 19-14 against USA to claim another Cup title.Team Fijiana lost to Ireland 10-5 and after beating Great Britain earlier in Pool play, they lost out in their 7th place playoff 17-22.Australian Women beat France 7-33 for Bronze and Japan upset Ireland 0-14 for 5th.The All Blacks 7s beat Argentina 19-24 to win the Toulouse 7s Men’s title, making it another Kiwi double! Fiji Men beat Spain 15-26 for 9th place and France beat Canada 12-28 for Bronze.Earlier Spain beat Samoa 5-28, Fiji 31-15 uruguay, Australia 21-19 South Africa and in the Cup semis Argentina 33-5 Canada and New Zealand 19-14 France. In Super Rugby Pacific yesterday: the Brumbies 48-32 Highlanders. In rugby league: Cronulla Sharks bounced back from their Magic Round humiliation by the Dolphins, holding off a fast-finishing Manly Sea Eagles to win 20-14 at Brookvale Oval yesterday.Kalyn Ponga steered the Knights to a 46-26 win over the Gold Coast Titans at McDonald Jones Stadium yesterday, scoring a try plus two try assists, four tackle busts and 116M run, in what was clearly his best game since returning from time off to deal with his concussion issues.Gold Coast Titans star, David Fifita was excellent in a losing side, continuing his stellar season, the Tongan enforcer’s length of the field try in the second half was one of the game’s highlights.Just a reminder everybody, the Rabbitohs are on top of the NRL ladder! In football: Ilkay Gundogan scored two brilliant goals and teed up Erling Haaland for another for Man City 3-0 at Everton as they moved four points clear atop the Premier League table with an 11th consecutive victory. With three games remaining, Pep G's treble-chasing side has 85 points and a game in hand on Arsenal, who suffered a 3-0 home drubbing to Brighton & Hove Albion.Guardiola crossed the Goodison Park pitch to the raucous City fans and held up two fingers to denote the number of wins he thinks is all they need to clinch the title. In the NBA: NBA insiders are speculating that Doc Rivers’ role as Head Coach could be in jeopardy if the Philadelphia 76s fail to secure a win in Game 7 of their NBA Eastern Conference semifinals against the Celtics in Boston today. This, after the 76ers took a 3-2 series lead and then failed to close the Celtics out at home in Game 6 last Thursday, losing 86-95.And so, Game 7 in Boston is a must-win game for Philly, to not only advance to a first Conference Finals since 2001, but for Rivers to er hopefully keep his job.His history of failing to close out multiple playoff series doesn’t help his case: Rivers holds a 6-9 record in Game 7s — carrying the unenviable distinction of having the most Game 7 losses of any Coach in NBA history. And finally, Rivers has never won a Game 7 on the road.Best of luck Doc.And that’s a wrap! All Blacks spots, with Beauden, Richie Rich and Leicester Fai’inga’anuku looking good, Scott Barrett and Dalton Papali’i outstanding, but Ioane bros – Reiko and Akira, plus Hoskings Sotutu not so good.In rugby league: The Rabbitohs are on top of the NRL ladder for the first time in four years following a gritty 20-0 win against a determined pride of Tigers yesterday afternoon.South Sydney have now won six in a row and produced some scintillating football in 2023, but this clash was largely a dull game until the Bunnies pulled away late in front of 21,013 fans at Accor Stadium.“Nothing went our way. Nothing went our way,” Parramatta Head Coach, Brad Arthur blowing up in the post-match media conference at the refereeing after the Eel’s 18-26 loss to the Raiders.Meanwhile in Townsville the Cowboys clobbered Saint George 22-42 yesterday; spoiling Ben Hunt’s 300th NRL game, although he was one of the Dragon’s best, with three try assists. In the NBA: LeBron James delivered a sensational 30-points, to go with nine rebounds and nine assists as the Los Angeles Lakers ran Steph Curry and his Golden State Warriors out of the NBA playoffs in dominant style yesterday, beating the Warriors 122-101 to advance to the NBA Western Conference finals against Nikola Jokic and the top-seeded Denver Nuggets for a place in the NBA Finals.“It’s going to be a great series,” James told broadcaster ESPN. “They’ve been the number one seed in the West all season long. We give them a lot of respect.”Meanwhile in the big apple, ESPN basketball guru, Stephen A. Smith, a renowned New York Knicks supporter, has absolutely savaged Knicks stars Julius Randle and RJ Barrett after the Knicks were knocked out of the NBA Eastern Conference Semi-Final series, losing 92-96 to the Miami Heat in Game 6.And that’s a wrap! Ma’lelei, talofa, bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 40 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a cloudy and drizzling Saturday morning 13 May 2023.   Coming to you with tons of love from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.    In rugby: Toulouse 7s results overnight in the Women’s comp: Fijiana 47-7 Spain, NZ 50-0 Poland, Australia 52-0 Brazil, Fijiana 26-14 Japan, NZ 31-12 USA and Australia 33-12 Ireland.   Toulouse 7s results Men: Australia 49-5 Japan, Samoa 12-14 Ireland, New Zealand 29-12 Canada, Argentina 29-7 Germany, France 31-7 South Africa and Fiji 21-21 USA, then Australia 12-5 Ireland, Samoa 28-12 Japan, NZ 31-5 Canada, France 14-14 USA and South Africa whacked Fiji 7-24.   After the Queensland Reds major upset over the Chiefs 24-25 in New Plymouth yesterday, the Fijian Drua never seemed to get out of second gear against the Force 34-14, obviously stuffed by all the travel, which makes it very difficult to make the Super Rugby Pacific Quarter-finals from here.   In rugby league: The Panthers have ripped the Roosters to shreds 48-4 in which Jarome Luai produced his best game of the season, scoring a try and setting up three more, with Scott Sorensen also having a hand in four of Penrith’s eight tries, scoring a double and setting up two.   In boxing: Australia’s Jason Moloney is headlining this weekend’s world title blockbuster in America for the WBO Bantamweight crown against- rising Philippine star, Vincent Astrolabio inside California’s Stockton Arena on sunday, in what will be Maloney’s third shot at becoming a world boxing champion.   In football: With Croatian superstar Luka Modric 37 years old, Karim Benzema 35, and Toni Kroos 33, Real Madrid isn’t just targeting one mind-blowing transfer swoop this off-season. The Spanish giants are reportedly eyeing a massive double play for both England midfielder Jude Bellingham, offering him US$416,000 pay a week, and France superstar Kylian Mbappe – they’re gonna pay him whatever he wants!   In SportsBiz: ADIDAS has finally chosen a course of action for its cheezy Yeezy merchandise.   After months of weighing various options regarding its US$1.3Billion worth of “Ye” inventory — all that Kanye West rubbish stock — ADIDAS has opted to sell the merchandise and donate the proceeds to charities for people hurt by his anti-Semitic outbursts.   And that’s a wrap! Ma’lelei, talofa, bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 39 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on another blue sky Friday morning 12 May 2023. Coming to you with tons of love from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby: Toulouse 7s First Round Games tonight 10.23pm Australia vs Japan, 10.45pm Samoa vs Ireland, 11.29pm New Zealand vs Canada and at 12.35am France vs South Africa then at 12.57am Fiji vs USA. Our World Famous Tips for Super Rugby Pacific: the Chiefs to chomp the Reds at 7.05pm, followed by the Fijian Drua to fandjango the Force at 9.35pm. Tomorrow the Hurricanes to mojo Moana Pasifika, the Crusaders to crinkle the Blues, the NSW Waratahs to ruble the Rebels and the Brumbies to brongo the Highlanders. In rugby league: Papua New Guinea Kumuls star, Justin Olam scored for the Storm, who won 24-16 against a gutsy Brisbane side at AAMI Park in Melbourne last night. The Storm winning streak is now 13 straight against the Broncos who remain top of the NRL ladder. In boxing: Aljamain Sterling spoiled Henry Cejudo’s UFC comeback, taking out the former two-division champion in a split decision victory 47-48, 48-47 on two cards to defend his Bantamweight belt last Sunday. Olympic gold medallist Cejudo was back in the UFC after three years on the sidelines - the only man to ever win Olympic gold and become a UFC Champion, winning both the Flyweight and Bantamweight straps before his shock retirement in 2020. In the NBA: Steph Curry had 27 points and eight assists, Andrew Wiggins added 25 points, seven rebounds and five assist, as the defending champion Golden State Warriors beat the Los Angeles Lakers 121-106 in Game 5 of the NBA Western Conference semifinals. LeBron James had 25 points and nine rebounds for the Lakers. Anthony Davis added 23 points and nine rebounds but went to the locker room late after appearing to take a hit in the head. Now, it’s back to LA for Game 6 on Friday night with the Lakers 5-0 at home this postseason. Golden State has to win one more time to bring Game 7 back to Chase Center on Sunday. In SportsBiz: After another successful weekend that saw Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen again take the checkered flag, the Miami Grand Prix is exploring the possibility of starting its Formula 1 race at night. “We’ve had some discussions about potentially doing that,” said Miami GP managing partner Tom Garfinkel, who is also President and CEO of the Miami Dolphins. Running the race after the sun goes down would prevent the track from getting too hot. However, a move to later in the day would cause complications for F1’s huge international audience. A night start in the US’s Eastern time zone would mean the race would get underway in the early-morning hours in most of Europe. In England — home base for many F1 teams — a race at 7pm in Miami would mean midnight GMT. And that my friends is way past King Charles’ bed time! And that’s a wrap! Ma’lelei, Talofa, Bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 36 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on another bright and sunny Tuesday morning 09 May 2023. Coming to you with love from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby: Super W Champions, Fijiana Drua arrived home yesterday to great news that their major sponsor, Rooster Chicken will pay the team a bonus $80,000. Hopefully, other corporates will also chip in. Head Coach Inoke Male and players are enjoying a short break before he assembles his Fiji Women’s Team to play the Wallaroos in Sydney in two weeks. In rugby league: Magic Round produced some brilliant narratives as the city of Brisbane embraced a 48-hour rugby league bonanza. None bigger than Wayne Bennett steering the Dolphins to their sixth win of the season in his 900th game as an NRL Head Coach - a fitting tribute for the game’s greatest coach. Doing it at Suncorp Stadium made it even sweeter. Young gun, Reece Walsh has been electric in his first nine appearances for the Broncos, and he has caught the eye of Maroons coach Billy Slater. The 20-year-old has scored four tries, a staggering 13 try assists, to go with 8 linebreaks and 15 linebreak assists. The gun fullback is locked in a battle with incumbent Kalyn Ponga for the No.1 Maroons Origin jersey, so Slater has a huge headache on his hands. Former NRL star and Fiji Bati, Jarryd Hayne appeared in the NSW District Court on Monday dressed in his prison greens and sporting a thick beard for the hearing of the victim’s impact statement. After five years, three trials, an appeal and nine months in prison, Hayne was found guilty in April of sexually assaulting the woman at her Newcastle home in 2018. It was the third time Hayne faced a trial over the same incident and the second time he was found guilty. The Judge will sentence Hayne on Friday. In boxing: On Wednesday 24 May in Melbourne, former WBO Heavyweight World Champion, Kiwi-Samoan Joseph Parker fights former Australian Champion ‘Django’ Opelu for the Commonwealth Heavyweight Title on the same show that features emerging star Nikita Tszyu against undefeated Victorian Benjamin Bommber. It’s Parker’s first fight in Australia as a pro and his first shot at the Commonwealth belt, and the first time a Tszyu has fought in Melbourne since Kostya the legend stopped Jesse James Leija in 2003. In football: Ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash, Real Madrid boss, Carlo Ancelotti says they will not focus too much on deadly Man City Striker, Erling Haaland. Real Madrid aim to be European champions for a record 15th time, having beaten Pep G’s side in last season’s semi-finals. Er . . Carlo, I humbly suggest that you focus on Haaland. In SportsBiz: Lionel Messi appears to be on his way to Saudi Arabia, where the Argentine legend has reportedly agreed a deal with Saudi Pro League Club Al-Hilal, according to a Spanish football media outlet, for US$386.5Million per season. This will easily make Messi the highest-paid athlete in the world — ahead of rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for Saudi side Al-Nassr for US$220M per year. Just last week, Forbes listed Messi in second place in their list of 2023 highest-paid athletes, at US$130M with Ronaldo first with US$136M. And that’s a wrap! Ma’lelei, Talofa, Bula and Welcome to Season 05 Episode 35 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a beautiful sunny and bright Monday morning 08 May 2023. Coming to you with love from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby: The Fijian Drua is now 8th on the Super Rugby Pacific Table on 17 points, with the Queensland Reds above them on 19 points and the Rebels one rung below on 15 points. Last year, the Highlanders finished 8th and qualified for the quarterfinals on 23 points, equal with the Force, but the Force came 9th on points differential. The Fijian Drua points dif in 2023 is currently -113, compared to -15 for the Reds and -79 for the Rebels. So, their best chance to finish 8th and qualify for the finals play-offs this season, the Fijian Drua must beat the Force this Friday in Perth and then aim to win both their remaining home games against Moanoa Pasifika in Lautoka and the Reds in Suva at the end of May. In rugby league: Maika Sivo crossed for three tries in the last game of Magic Round last night, but the Gold Coast Titans out-boxed the Parramatta Eels 24-26 in a seesawing clash with Kieran Foran producing a game for the ages with two linebreaks, a try assist and a double, in an epic match-up against the Eels Dylan Brown. The Cowboys finally clicked into gear, producing an impressive defensive performance in their 20-6 win over the Roosters in tough conditions at Suncorp yesterday — hell there was even hail at one stage! And Wests Tigers rookie fullback Jahream Bula came up with a game-saving tackle, for the second week in a row, as Tim Sheens’ Tigers won again 18-16 over the St George Dragons at Suncorp yesterday. In boxing: Inspired by the coronation of King Charles III no doubt, tough British challenger, John Ryder went the distance against Canelo “Saul” Alvarez in Mexico yesterday. As expected Canelo won by unanimous decision 120-107 and two cards showing 118-109 defending his WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO Super Middleweight titles, to improve his record to 59-2-2. But Ryder won the moral victory. Long live the King. In football: Just hours after the pomp and ceremony of the coronation of King Charles III in London’s Westminster Abbey, Man City underlined their desire to extend their own reign, chasing a fifth Premier League title in six seasons. Pep G’s men opened up a four-point lead at the top of the EPL with a 2-1 win against Leeds as Liverpool beat Brentford 1-0 to close in on the top four. Meanwhile Paris Saint-German is in turmoil; choosing not to take up an optional one year extension on Lionel Messi and PSG fans protesting outside Neymar’s home. Both superstars now look set to leave gay Paris ASAP. In SportsBiz: As the NBA eyes negotiating upwards of US$75Billion for its next broadcast rights package, it couldn’t have asked for a better postseason match-up than LeBron James versus Steph Curry in the Western Conference Semifinals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors. Between them, the two future Hall of Famers boast eight NBA titles, six MVP Awards, and 28 All-Star appearances. I think it’s called stardust. And that’s a wrap! In other Super Rugby games yesterday, the Crusaders 48-13 Force and the Blues 31-30 Moana Pasifika. Our world famous tips for the Magic Round today: Wests Tigers to weewilliewonka the Dragons, the Cowboys to ramborina the Roosters and the Eels to GGG the Gold Coast Titans. In boxing: Canelo “Saul” Alvarez will bank a guaranteed US$10Million for his title defense against British challenger, John Ryder today. DAZN Pay-Per-View revenue built into his contract could see Alvarez make upwards of US$33M should the fight sell more than 500,000 buys. Ryder earns US$1M in the biggest pay day of his life, with the possibility of making US$3.3M should the fight clear 500,000 PPVs. In football: Total revenue for La Liga this season is expected to reach US$5.4Billion, surpassing its total from 2018-19 — the season before COVID forced fan capacity restrictions inside stadiums. La Liga ranks second among all European soccer competitions in total revenue, behind the US$9.2B from the English Premier League and EFL Championship. In SportsBiz: Formula One recorded US$381Million total revenue for Q1 2023 — a 6% increase on 2022. F1 race weekends are drawing huge crowds, with the recent Australian Grand Prix hosting 445,000 fans and sellouts for the most of the remaining 2023 calendar. Talofa, Ma’lele’i, Bula and welcome to Season 05 Episode 34 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika Peoples sports on another bright, sunny and muggy Saturday morning 06 May 2023. Coming to you from paradise, on the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean! In rugby union: It’s all systems go for Team Fijiana to raspberrydelite the Queensland Reds in the 2023 Super W Grand final at 6.45pm this evening. The girls have been in lock down in the 48 hours leading up to kick-off as they defend their 2022 title. Also wishing the Fijian Drua all the best against the Hurricanes in Suva, Fiji at 2.05pm this afternoon. Go The Chiefs! Last night against the Highlanders under the roof at Forsyth Barr Stadium in chilly Dunedin, and also against our World famous Tip of a win for Aaron Smith & Company, the Men from Hamilton were simply too good - winning 52-26. That man – flying fullback, Emoni Narawa sparked the Chiefs counter surge with another long range, breakout try from just outside his red zone early in the first half and one could, at the break, feel that this one was all over red rover! In rugby league: It took the Green Machine just one minute to get Jordan Rapana on the board — catching a Jamal Fogarty bomb and crashing over to help the Raiders down the Bulldogs 30-34 in a thrilling finish to the opening game of Magic Round, their fourth win on the trot. This was followed by gun Wing, Selwyn Cobbo scoring a hat trick for the Broncos to massacre Manly 6-32. Our world famous tips for NRL Magic Round today: the New Zealand Warriors to peterpan Penrith, the Dolphins to cococrunch Cronulla and Souths to Sambuca the Storm. In SportsBiz: Sportswear giant ADIDAS reports US$5.82Billion in Q1 2023 revenue — a 1% dip from last year. ADIDAS also reported an operating profit of US$66.2Million for that period. Earlier this week, a group of ADIDAS shareholders filed a class-action lawsuit against the company, saying it should have known better than to partner with Ye AKA Kanye West. Having also cut ties with superstar Beyoncé in March, ADIDAS has turned to its Samba, Gazelle, and Campus brands to lift sales – now producing them at larger scale. In football: Napoli finally ended their long wait to win Italy’s Serie A yesterday morning, after a 1-1 draw at Udinese secured their third league title with a record-equalling five games still to play. Thousands of fans in Udine, plus 55,000 more at the Stadio Maradona in Naples and all around southern Italy’s biggest city, exploded with joy at the final whistle as 33 years of waiting came to an end. In the EPL, Brighton gained sweet revenge for their defeat to Man U on penalties in the FA Cup semi-final a few weeks ago, with a goal from the spot in the dying seconds to earn a 1-0 win yesterday. The result leaves United in fourth place in the Premier League, four points clear of Liverpool, with a game in hand. While Brighton is seeking to qualify for Europe for the first time in their history, lie sixth with five games to play. In boxing: Prior to British star John Ryder, seven other Brits have fought Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and all came up short, including Amir Khan, Billy Joe Saunders and Callum Smith - the Mexican legend is simply too good. In fact, Matthew Hatton who lost his WBA title challenge in 2011 admits that he still takes pain killers today due to Canelo’s hard shots. “It’s just not worf it mate!” For TEIVOVOsports.com I’m Culden Kamea - Mahalo, vinaka and thank you. In rugby league: Broncos Coach Kevin Walters is in doubt for Magic Round after catching the flu from a player. Our world famous tips for NRL Magic Round tonight: The Raiders to bullfrog the Bulldogs and the Broncos to mollymeldrum Manly. In SportsBiz: Faced with a falling number of cable TV subscribers, ESPN is caught between the past and the future – subscriptions or streaming? Do they take their entire flagship programming TV network and make it available direct-to-consumer? ESPN’s TV footprint is now down to 74 million homes from 100 million two decades ago. The new ESPN+ streaming service has signed 25 million subscribers in five years, but most of the network’s marquee events, like “Monday Night Football,” still air on the linear TV channel. TV is still huge for ESPN, generating US$28Billion revenue per annum. In future, more live sporting events will shift to ESPN+ at US$9.99 a month, including the NBA, with which ESPN is hoping to extend a 21-year relationship. In football: Erling Haaland set a new Premier League record of 35 goals in a season as the Manchester City striker took his tally in all competitions this season to 51 goals by scoring against West Ham on Wednesday. Man City cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Hammers to leapfrog Arsenal and return to the top of the Premier League table with a one point advantage and a game in hand. In boxing: Expect a very special atmosphere as Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (58-2-2, 39 KO) puts his undisputed Super Middleweight Champion status on the line against British star John Ryder (32-5, 18KO) at the Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, Mexico on Sunday. The fight marks the first time Alvarez has fought in Mexico since November 2011. Aye Tequila gringo? For TEIVOVOsports.com I’m Culden Kamea - Mahalo, vinaka and thank you. In rugby league: Our world famous tips for NRL Magic Round on Friday: The Raiders to bullfrog the Bulldogs and the Broncos to mollymeldrum Manly. On Saturday, the New Zealand Warriors to peterpan Penrith, the Dolphins to cococrunch Cronulla and Souths to Sambuca the Storm. In SportsBiz: British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly emerged as the highest bidder for Manchester United. His Group has offered more than US$6.2Billion to buy the Premier League Club, according to the Daily Telegraph. In football: Leeds United has sacked interim Manager, Javi Gracia and replaced him with former England Manager, Sam Allardyce. The Spaniard, Gracia only moved to Elland Road in late February on a deal until the end of the season. While he won three and drew one in his first six games, he has had a horrid run of four losses in five games in which Leeds has conceded an alarming 18 goals. Appointing Allardyce is an almighty gamble to preserve their Premier League status for a third-straight season. He has been out of work since stepping down as West Bromwich Albion boss at the end of the 2021 season in which the Baggies were relegated. The gig at Leeds will be the 68-year-old’s 14th managerial job. In the NBA: While Steph Curry and LeBron James were the headline acts, in Game 1 of their NBA Western Conference semi-finals series, it was Anthony Davis who powered the Los Angeles Lakers to a 117-112 win over the Golden State Warriors. The Lakers big man finished with 30 points, 23 rebounds, five assists and four blocks, joining Tim Duncan as the only player in the last 45 years with at least 30 points, 20 rebounds, five assists and three blocks in a playoff game. As expected in a clash of playing styles, the Lakers dominated the game inside the paint and enjoyed a significant advantage at the free-throw line (25-5). In boxing: Former world heavyweight boxing champion Deontay Wilder was arrested in Los Angeles early Tuesday for possession of a concealed weapon, police said. The Los Angeles Police Department said Wilder was detained in the early hours of Tuesday after being stopped by police while driving his Rolls Royce in Hollywood. The Spanish football giant’s board agreed to financing it with 20 investors for the project — confirming that it will be able to repay all construction-related debts by 2047.In doing so, the Club confirmed that it didn’t use any team assets as a guarantee or take out a mortgage on the stadium, using revenue generated from the renovated stadium and hosting games again to repay the debt — estimated by Barca to be US$271Million annually. In football: Speaking at a World Trade Organisation meeting in Geneva, FIFA President Gianni Infantino says FIFA could “refuse to sell” TV rights to their Women’s World Cup, set to kick off in Australia and New Zealand on 20 July, unless broadcasters in Europe and the UK increase their offers. He said: “The objective is to reach an equal pay situation, but broadcasters, especially public broadcasters funded by taxpayers’ money, should put the action behind their words.Infantino claims European broadcasters are only willing to pay between £800,000 and £8Million for broadcast rights – a tiny fraction of the £80M to £160M offered for the Men’s tournament.“It is our moral and legal obligation not to undersell the Women’s World Cup,” he said. “This is a slap in the face of all the great FIFA Women’s World Cup players and indeed of all women worldwide,” Infantino said. And only in the USA: Three punters were selected in this year’s NFL Draft, two in round six and one in round seven. And while Scott Drinkwater and Coen Hess are free to play against the Roosters, after taking early guilty pleas, Jeremiah Nanai is out for four weeks for a hip drop tackle which sees him also miss Origin I. Tough guy, Tui Kamikamica is still out on suspension. In SportsBiz: First-round picks secure life-changing contracts at the NFL Draft, from as high as No 1: US$41.2Million with US$26.9M signing bonus, down to the last first-round pick No. 31 at US$12.7M and US$6.2M signing bonus. In boxing: Seeking to resolve a long dispute with Olympic officials, the International Boxing Association said on Monday it will update the IOC this week and no longer has Russian energy giant Gazprom as a sponsor. The International Olympic Committee cut ties with the sport’s governing body in 2019 and is planning for a second straight Olympic Games without the IBA’s involvement.
