Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 06 Episode 32 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a bright and sunny Tuesday morning 01 August 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. OK so to start off this podcast today I want to pay a special tribute to AFL icon Lance “Buddy” Franklin who retired effective immediately yesterday in Sydney where he plays for the Swans. Franklin confirmed the news in an Instagram post, writing: “What a journey. Thanks to everyone who has been on this crazy ride with me.” Lance “Buddy” Franklin played 354 senior AFL games across both Hawthorn and Sydney, booting 1066 goals - just the sixth player in AFL history to do so. He won two premierships with Hawthorn before crossing to the Sydney Swans on a landmark nine-year deal worth A$10Million. Franklin is an eight-time All-Australian and a four-time Coleman Medal winner. In the FIFA World Cup Group Games yesterday: Japan 4-0 Spain in Wellington, Zambia 3-1 Costa Rica in Hamilton, Australia 4-0 Canada in Melbourne and Ireland 0-0 Nigeria in Brisbane. Today sees: Portugal vs USA 7pm at Eden Park in Auckland, Vietnam vs Netherlands at 7pm in Dunedin, Haiti vs Denmark at 7pm in Perth and China v England at 8:30pm in Adelaide. And at the Netball World Cup pool games in Cape Town, South Africa overnight in the Top 8: Australia 77-37 Scotland, Wales 34-83 New Zealand, Jamaica 61-49 Uganda and Tonga 46-72 England, while Zimbabwe 45-62 Barbados, Fiji 48-62 Malawi, Sri Lankan 52-55 Singapore and South Africa 69-28 Trinidad. Games today sees: Barbados-Singapore, Australia-Malawi, Tonga-Scotland, Zimbabwe-Sri Lanka, Fiji-England, Wales-Uganda, Jamaica-Trinidad and New Zealand-South Africa. In Rugby: All the big rugby on Saturday: Samoa versus Tonga in Apia at 1pm local time, New Zealand versus Australia in Dunedin at 7.05pm and Japan host the Fiji Water Flying Fijians at Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium in Tokyo at 5:15pm local time. And in combat Sports: Justin Gaethje knocked Dustin Poirier out cold with a stunning head kick yesterday, winning their rematch at UFC291 and claiming the ‘BMF’ title in the process. Five years after suffering a TKO loss to Poirier, Gaethje looked a completely different fighter against his fellow American, getting the better of most exchanges in Round 1. Gaethje, widely deemed the most exciting athlete in the UFC, then dropped Poirier with a clean head kick in Round 2 to end the fight. In rugby league: NRL games this weekend on Thursday: The Roosters vs Manly at the SCG at 7.50pm AEST. On Friday: Gold Coast Titans vs the NZ Warriors at Cbus Super Stadium at 6pm and the Panthers vs the Storm at BlueBet Stadium, 8pm. Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 06 Episode 31 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a bright and sunny Monday morning 31 July 2023. Happy birthday Culden! Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In the FIFA World Cup Group Games yesterday: Morocco 1-0 Korea in Adelaide, Norway 6-0 Philippines at Eden Park in Auckland, Switzerland 0-0 New Zealand in Dunedin so the Kiwis are out of the finals and Columbia upset Germany 1-2 in Sydney. Today sees: Japan vs Spain at 7pm in Wellington, Costa Rica vs Zambia at 7pm in Hamilton, Canada vs Australia at 8pm in Melbourne and Ireland vs Nigeria at 8pm in Brisbane. And at the Netball World Cup pool games in Cape Town, South Africa overnight: Australia 101-32 Fiji, Wales 68-56 Sri Lanka, New Zealand 80-19 Singapore, Malawai 84-48 Barbados, Uganda 74-34 Trinidad, England 62-37 Scotland, Jamaica 67-49 South Africa and Tonga 55-46 Zimbabwe. The Round 4 draws sees in the Top 8: Australia vs Scotland, Wales vs New Zealand, Jamaica vs Uganda and Tonga vs England, while Zimbabwe vs Barbados, Fiji vs Malawi, Sri Lankan vs Singapore and South Africa vs Trinidad play off in the bottom 8. In Rugby: Spain will be playing in the World Rugby U20 Championship for the first time in 2024 after a thrilling 39-32 victory over Uruguay in Nairobi, Kenya yesterday. Scotland vented their frustrations for not winning this U20 comp as expected by themselves and no one else really, securing third place with a 12-try, 83-10 thrashing of Samoa for the bronze medal. And in combat Sports: WBO World Champion, Terence Crawford made history in Las Vegas yesterday, with his 9th round TKO win over IBF, WBA and WBC World Champion no more, Errol Spence Jr. to become boxing’s first world undisputed Welterweight champion with his record now standing at 40-0 with 30 knockouts. The former lightweight and undisputed light welterweight world champion has won seven of his eight fights at welterweight by knockout plus this TKO win. In rugby league: It’s war – all players kicked off their official boycott of the NRL last Thursday night. Starting with the Sydney Roosters versus Brisbane Broncos clash, all players made their way out onto grounds last round with patches of tape covering the NRL logo. The move escalates already tense pay negotiations between the Rugby League Players Association and the NRL. Meanwhile, on the field, the Bulldogs beat the Dolphins 22-23 thanks to a Matt Burton field goal, after Jamayne Isaako missed a potential match winning conversion in the final minute. Anthony Milford scored the second of two second half tries in the 79th minute to give Isaako the chance to steal it, but he pushed his conversion wide. The Gold Coast Titans recorded one of their best wins of 2023, ending the Cowboys six-game winning streak 22-13 at Cbus Super Stadium. The big talking point of the game was the second sin binning in as many weeks of Cowboys star Valentine Holmes for shoulder charges. And in Sports Biz: NBA viewership was at an all-time high this season and didn’t slow down for the playoffs. This year’s Conference Finals between the Boston Celtics vs. Miami Heat and Denver Nuggets vs. Los Angeles Lakers saw a combined 81.11 million viewers across the 11 games, a 10% increase year-over-year. And that’s a slam dunk! For TeivovoSports.com I’m Culden Kamea – please hit the like and subscribe buttons below if you want to receive more Pasifika sports highlights on Breakfast Bites. Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 06 Episode 30 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a bright but chilly 19 degrees Celsius Sunday morning 30 July 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In the FIFA World Cup Group Games yesterday: Sweden 5-0 Italy in Wellington, France 2-1 Brazil in Brisbane and Jamaica 1-0 Panama in Perth. Today sees: Korea Republic vs Morocco at 2pm in Adelaide, Norway vs Philippines 7pm at Eden Park in Auckland, Switzerland vs New Zealand at 7pm in Dunedin and Germany vs Colombia at 7.30pm in Sydney. And at the Netball World Cup pool games in Cape Town, South Africa overnight: Malawi 55-49 Scotland, England 90-29 Barbados, New Zealand 54-44 Uganda, Fiji 52-48 Zimbabwe, Australia 85-38 Tonga, South Africa 61-50 Wales and Jamaica 105-25 Sri Lanka. Later today sees: Australia vs Fiji, Wales vs Sri Lanka, New Zealand vs Singapore, Malawai vs Barbados, Uganda vs Trinidad, England vs Scotland, Jamaica vs South Africa and Tonga take on Zimababwe. In Rugby: All the big Test Match Rugby results yesterday: Fiji should move up to 10th in the World Rugby Test rankings after their 33-19 win over Samoa in Apia yesterday, while the Wallabies have crumbled to another humbling defeat, falling 38-7 to the All Blacks in their first Bledisloe Cup clash of 2023. Japan just beat Tonga 16-21 in Osaka and South Africa pipped Argentina 21-22 at Ellis Park in Jo’burg. In rugby league: Manly gave their inspirational Captain Daly Cherry-Evans a milestone game to remember in an entertaining 24-18 victory over the Dragons in Wollongong. It was DCE’s 300th NRL game. While at GIO Stadium in Canberra, Kalyn Ponga gave the thumbs up following a clumsy and dangerous challenge for a high ball in the Knights 28-6 win over Canberra. And at BlueBet Stadium, Sharks forward Cameron McInnes broke the NRL record for the most tackles in a game - 84, but it wasn’t enough for the visitors, as they were simply no match for a dominant Penrith, going down 28-0 with the Panthers Co-Captains Isaah Yeo and Nathan Cleary simply outstanding. In Sports Biz: The 2023 Women’s World Cup hasn’t even progressed through group play, but FIFA is already projecting higher attendance numbers than expected for the tournament. Ticket sales are now close to 1.6 million, according to football’s governing body, which would easily surpass the record 1.35 million fans who attended the FIFA World Cup 2015 in Canada. And in combat Sports: Watch out for Errol Spence Jr. versus Terence Crawford at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas for their 12-round clash later today, with Crawford of Omaha, Nebraska with a record of 39-0 with 30 knockouts, a former lightweight and undisputed light welterweight world champion who has won all seven of his fights at welterweight by knockout. And Spence, also with an unblemished record of 28-0 with 22 KOs, from DeSoto, Texas, who will fight to become boxing’s first world undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era defending his IBF, WBA and WBC crowns, while Crawford puts his WBO belt on the line. “Lets get ready to R U M B L E”. Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 06 Episode 29 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a bright and warm Saturday morning 29 July 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In the FIFA World Cup Group Games yesterday: Argentina 2-2 South Africa in Dunedin, England 1-0 Denmark in Sydney and China PR 1-0 Haiti in Adelaide. Today sees: Sweden vs Italy at 7:30pm in Wellington, France vs Brazil at 8pm in Brisbane and Panama v Jamaica at 8:30pm in Perth. And at the Netball World Cup pool games in Cape Town, South Africa overnight: New Zealand 76-27 Trinidad, Fiji 51-56 Tonga, Uganda 79-37 Singapore, Australia 86-30 Zimbabwe, Jamaica 105-25 Sri Lanka and South Africa 61-50 Wales. Later today sees: Malawi vs Scotland, England vs Barbados, New Zealand vs Uganda, Fiji vs Zimbabwe, Australia vs Tonga, Jamaica vs Wales, Scotland vs Barbados and South Africa vs Sri Lanka. In Rugby: Our World Famous Tips for all the big rugby Tests this weekend – Fiji to cocopop Samoa at Apia Park, New Zealand to kiwifrubu Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Tonga to nonijuju Japan in Osaka and South Africa to sambarina Argentina in Johannesburg. In rugby league: As expected, after their loss last weekend and a flogging at training all week, the Storm turned up last night and thrashed the Eels 16-46. The Eels were unable to get their power game going without Reagan Campbell-Gillard and drop out of the eight and so must win at least two of their last four games to play finals footy. They have the Dragons, Broncos, Roosters and Panthers. So the Dragons next week is a must win. I repeat – the Eels season is absolutely on the line next week against the Dragons. The other result from yesterday’s NRL games saw the bumbling Wests Tigers 18-32 South Sydney. In Sports Biz: Peacock streaming, with its strong sports content, delivers to a subscriber base of 24 million, up by 2m from the prior quarter, saw quarterly revenue soar by 85% to US$820Million, but their adjusted losses worsened from $467M to $651M over last year. In fact, Peacock’s 24 million subscribers is less than the 25.3m subscribers for the other sports streaming channel, ESPN+ and far below rival general-interest streaming services such as Netflix at 238.4m, Disney+ at 157.8m, Paramount+ at 60m and Hulu at 48.2m. In combat Sports: Errol Spence Jr. stepped on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale at exactly 66.7Kg late Friday morning at MGM Grand for his welterweight title unification showdown with Terence Crawford on Saturday night at nearby T-Mobile Arena. Crawford came just under the limit at 66.6Kg for their 12-round Showtime Pay-Per-View main event. Crawford (39-0, 30 KOs), of Omaha, Nebraska, and Spence (28-0, 22 KOs), of DeSoto, Texas, will fight to become boxing’s first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era. Spence will defend his IBF, WBA and WBC crowns and Crawford will put his WBO belt on the line. And that’s a wrap “Lets get ready to R U M B L E”. Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 06 Episode 28 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a bright but cool Friday morning 28 July 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In the FIFA World Cup Group Games yesterday: USA 1-1 Netherlands in Wellington, Portugal 2-0 Vietnam in Hamilton and Australia 2-3 Nigeria in Brisbane. Today sees: Argentina vs South Africa 12midday in Dunedin, England vs Denmark at 5:30pm in Sydney and China PR vs Haiti at 8:30pm in Adelaide. And at the Netball World Cup starting in Cape Town South Africa today: At 5pm AEST New Zealand vs Trinidad and Fiji vs Tonga, and at 7pm Uganda vs Singapore and Australia vs Zimbabwe. In Rugby: Who do you pick to win all the big games this weekend - Samoa vs Fiji at Apia Park, New Zealand vs Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, Japan vs Tonga in Osaka, Japan and South Africa vs Argentina at Ellis Park in Johannesburg? In rugby league: In a historic night for try-scorers, Roosters Wing Daniel Tupou became the Club’s greatest try-scorer, as Broncos star, Patrick Carrigan scored the first of his NRL career. The 32-10 victory took Brisbane top of the NRL ladder, while the Roosters season is almost certainly over, now having to win all of their five remaining games to have any chance of playing finals. Today’s NRL games sees the bumbling Wests Tigers take on the smooth South Sydney and the out of sorts Melbourne Storm up against the in-form Parramatta Eels. In Sports Biz: Joe Lewis, the British billionaire and majority owner of Tottenham, has been charged in the US with insider trading. Federal prosecutors in Manhattan accuse the 86-year-old of giving tips to friends, associates and romantic partners from 2019 to 2021. Tottenham is the ninth-most valuable football Club in the world at US$2.8Billion, according to Forbes, and Lewis himself is worth more than US$6B. In combat Sports: Boxing godfather and founder of Top Rank Boxing, Bob Arum posted yesterday: “Naoya Inoue is a once in a multi-generational talent. The best pound for pound fighter in the world”. His 8th round TKO win over Stephen Fullton on Tuesday was a good day in the office for Inoue; Compubox stats show that he landed 114 punches compared to Fulton’s 47. He also landed 70 power shots compared to 24. Tuesday’s victory means 30-year-old Inoue has now held world titles in four different weight divisions, after previously claiming belts in light-flyweight, super-flyweight and bantamweight divisions. Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 06 Episode 26 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on another hazy but bright Wednesday morning 26 July 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. And in the FIFA World Cup Group Games yesterday: Colombia 2-0 Korea Republic in Sydney, Philippines 1-0 New Zealand in Wellington and Switzerland 0-0 Norway in Hamilton. Today’s games sees: Japan vs Costa Rica at 5pm in Dunedin, Spain vs Zambia at 7.30pm at Eden Park in Auckland and Canada vs Republic of Ireland at 8pm in Perth. In Rugby: Major upsets at the World Rugby U20 Trophy competition in Nairobi, Kenya where Uruguay thrashed pre-tournament favourites, Scotland 26-37 and Spain secured a comfortable 28-10 win over Samoa The winner of final between Spain and Uruguay will secure promotion to the World Rugby U20 Championship in 2024. Scotland face a third-place play-off against Samoa, who had never lost a pool-stage match at the U20 Trophy prior to Tuesday. In Sports Biz; Paris Saint-Germain has jumped at the Saudi Arabian Club Al Hilal’s blockbuster US$1.1Billion offer, including a record US$332Million transfer fee for Kylian Mbappe, who will earn an out-of-this-world salary for one-year of US$776Million. The deal would allow Mbappé to then join Real Madrid after the 2023-24 season, if he still wants to do so – my goodness! The numbers behind Mbappé’s contract are even more eye-popping when you compare it to: · US$531M: LeBron James’ all-time NBA earnings · US$494M: Patrick Mahomes’ NFL deal through 2031 · US$367M: The New York Mets MLB entire payroll · US$332M: Tom Brady’s all-time NFL earnings · US$157M: Tiger Woods’ career PGA earnings All pale in comparison. In rugby league: The Daily Telegraph is reporting that the Rugby League Players Association’s media boycott has backfired, because players are unsure what they are supposed to be striking about, and what’s even more farcical, the RLPA put the media boycott on and the players are still happily talking to journalists. Rugby Leagus boss, Peter V’landys claims the RLPA is power hungry, as negotiations move past 20 months. In combat Sports: In his first fight at 55.3Kg, Japanese boxing superstar, Naoya ‘Monster’ Inoue tortured WBC and WBO Super Bantamweight Champion Stephen ‘Cool Boy’ Fulton for eight rounds, before putting him out of his misery with a brutal stoppage in Tokyo to become a four-division world champion and unified the Super Bantamweight World Champion while moving to 25-0 with 21 by KO. Or is that 22 by KO – whatever the American isn’t cool anymore.  25-07-2023 Breakfast Bites FIJI & PACIFIC SPORTS NEWS Podcast S06E25 #TeivovoSports #TeivovoDigital | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:11:06

Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 06 Episode 25 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a hazy but bright Tuesday morning 25 July 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. And in the FIFA World Cup Group Games yesterday: Italy 1-0 Argentina at Eden Park in Auckland, Germany 6-0 Morocco in Melbourne and Brazil 4-0 Panama in Adelaide. Today’s games sees: Colombia vs Korea Republic 12pm in Sydney, New Zealand vs Philippines 5.30pm in Wellington and Switzerland vs Norway at 8pm in Hamilton. The US team’s opening 3-0 win over Vietnam last Friday, drew 5.3 million viewers on Fox, plus another one million US viewers watched the game in Spanish on Telemundo. In Rugby: The All Blacks face the Wallabies in the first of two Bledisloe Cup clashes at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday, followed by the return Test in Dunedin next weekend. While the Springboks play Los Pumas at Ellis Park in Johannesburg this weekend. With New Zealand holding a four-point lead before facing Eddie Jones and his struggling wannabies, the clash between South Africa and Argentina is likely to decide who finishes runners-up. After beating Tonga 20-36 at Churchill Park, Lautoka last Saturday Fiji now travels to Apia to play Manu Samoa at 1pm local time. Many keyboard warriors have been very critical of the Fiji Water Flying Fijians performance. So in Background Buzz this morning at the end of this podcast, I take a closer at The Fiji Water Flying Fijians first game. In Sports Biz; David Beckham could not have dreamed of a better start as seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi made fans wait until stoppage time to see his magic — netting a free kick to seal a 2-1 victory that set social media ablaze. Among the stars watching Messi’s debut in person in Fort Lauderdale were Kim Kardashian, LeBron James and Serena Williams. Messi’s Inter Miami shirt is selling out all over the US. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal have reportedly lodged an official bid of US$332Million to Paris Saint-Germain for Messi’s old teammate Kylian Mbappe. BREAKING NEWS: It has been accepted by PSG. Hopefully, this one mega-deal will release everything, currently log-jammed for totally opposite reasons: Tottenham Hotspur do not want to sell Harry Kane while PSG are desperate to sell Mbappe, which they have done. So the potential chain reaction will likely go like this - PSG sells Mbappe and they will go even bigger for Harry Kane. In rugby league: With seven rounds remaining until the finals, the NRL’s August transfer deadline is the final chance for teams to improve their roster for a charge at the title, however the Cowboys, South Sdyney and the Storm all have no spots left in their squads to make a play. So, put Ben Hunt in the No.9 jersey and the Broncos become title insiders. And with Maika Sivo suspended for four games, Parramatta could do with extra outside backs, who can provide attacking x-factor like Sivo or Clint Gutherson. Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 06 Episode 24 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on another bright and sunny Monday morning 24 July 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. And in the FIFA World Cup Group Games yesterday: Sweden 2-1 South Africa in Wellington, Netherlands 1-0 Portugal in Dunedin and France 0-0 Jamaica in Sydney. Today’s games sees: Italy vs Argentina at 6pm at Eden Park in Auckland, Germany vs Morocco at 6:30pm in Melbourne and Brazil vs Panama at 8:30pm in Adelaide. In Rugby: After watching the Test between Fiji and Tonga in Lautoka last Saturday with Fiji Rugby Union officials, the top French Player Agent, who had been hanging around Fiji for a week, flew back to France without signing Frank Lomani, Iosefo Masi and two others. No doubt he will try again during the Rugby World Cup along with other agents, all with bags full of euro to offer. In Sports Biz; If you’re a betting man, or lady or whatever – there is money to be made by betting for Tonga or Fiji against Japan in their upcoming PNC games. Because Japan is ranked 10th - much higher than Fiji, Tonga and Samoa, the odds are stacked in their favour, but as we Pasifika know – we can always beat them. Last Saturday Samoa paid F$5 for the win, while a bet for Japan to win paid F$1.25. In rugby league: The Panthers have once again sent an ominous warning to all their rivals, after bolstering their premiership credentials with a comprehensive attacking display, to drown the Bulldogs 18-44. Superstar Panther, Nathan Cleary was sensational on returning from injury, and combined with five-eighth Jarome Luai to decimate the Bulldogs. Meanwhile, Parramatta Eels veteran Hooker, Josh Hodgson is facing retirement after suffering a season-ending neck injury in Round 13. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the 33-year-old Englishmen has informed his teammates his career has come to an end, after surgery and with continuous problems he still may have to go under the knife once again. In combat Sports: Australia’s former unified Lightweight World Champion, George Kambosos won a hard-fought controversial points decision; 114-114, 115-113 and 117-111 over Englishman Maxi Hughes in the US over the weekend. Kambosos, 30 took Hughes’ IBO world title and improved his record to 21-2. He is now also the mandatory IBF challenger for their title. In the Tour de France: Jonas Vingegaard won the Tour de France from Tadej Pogacar after the final stage of one of the greatest races and sports events on earth, with Britain's Adam Yates joining them on the podium in Paris. Wanna bet that thanks to this podcast, we will see a Pasifika cyclist on the tour next year! And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 06 Episode 23 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a bright and sunny Sunday morning 23 July 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In the FIFA World Cup Group Games yesterday: USA 3-0 Vietnam at Eden Park, Japan 5-0 Zambia in Hamilton, England 1-0 Haiti in Brisbane and Denmark 1-0 China in Perth. Today Sweden vs South Africa 5PM in Wellington, Netherlands vs Portugal AT 7.30PM in Dunedin and France vs Jamaica at 8PM in Sydney. In Rugby: The Fiji Water Flying Fijians prevailed over Tonga 20-36 in a tough Test yesterday with the Fiji backs too flash and their forwards too strong - grinding the Tongan forwards into the turf with a late scrum pushover try, which Caleb Muntz converted to cap off a great game. In Sapporo on the island of Hokkaido in the land of the rising sun, 12th World Rugby ranked Samoa beat 10th ranked Japan 22-24. In rugby league: The Cowboys will finish the weekend in the Top 8 after trampling the Eels 16-24 to claim their sixth straight victory as Jake Granville celebrated his 200th game, but it came at a massive cost, as Valentine Holmes faces suspension after a sin bin for a shot on Mitchell Moses. The Newcastle Knights delivered a gutsy 26-18 victory to keep their season alive, but the Melbourne Storm Coach, Craig Bellamy was left fuming in his post-match press conference, unleashing a rare public spray on his players, questioning their work ethic and will to win. In other NRL Results from super Saturday: the Sydney Roosters 36-18 Gold Coast Titans. In combat Sports: The highly anticipated showdown between WBC and WBO Super Bantamweight Champion Stephen ‘Cool Boy’ Fulton 21-0 and three-weight World Champion Naoya ‘Monster’ Inoue 24-0 with 21 KOs turned nasty after the 29-year-old American’s coach accused the local hero of cheating in some of his previous bouts. In sports Biz: Disney’s search for potential equity partners in ESPN has reportedly involved three of the biggest entities in all of sports. A CNBC report says that Disney officials, including ESPN CEO and ESPN Chairman, have already held talks with the NFL, NBA, and MLB to bring them in as minority partners. Disney is open to selling part of ESPN to a strategic partner or three, as it deals head-on with some of its biggest challenges. Key among them is, the ongoing black hole that ESPN’s linear reach has fallen into; from more than 100 million homes in 2011 to the present 72.5 million. Such a move would bring ESPN even closer to three of its most important pro sports properties. In 2021, thenetwork extended its NFL rights through 2033 in a deal worth about US$2.7Billion per year. The NBA, meanwhile, has been on ESPN continuously since 2002, and the network’s current rights expire in 2025. ESPN similarly extended its MLB deal in 2021 through to 2028. In the Tour de France: Jonas Vingegaard is just 24 hours away now from defending his Tour de France title having maintained his comfortable overall lead of 7 minutes and 29 seconds over Tadej Pogacar after Stage 20, with Britain's Adam Yates third and looking good for the podium in Paris tomorrow. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In the FIFA World Cup: Results from yesterday - Nigeria 0-0 Canada, Switzerland 2-0 Philippines in Dunedin and Spain 3-0 Costa Rica in Wellington. FIFA World Cup Group Games today: USA vs Vietnam 1pm at Eden Park, Zambia vs Japan 7pm in Hamilton, England vs Haiti 7.30pm in Brisbane and Denmark vs China at 8pm in Perth. In Rugby: Today marks the start of the reign of Simon Raiwalui as Head Coach of the Fiji Water Flying Fijians against Ikale Tahi Tonga at Churchill Park in Lautoka. It also marks 48 days to the start of the Rugby World Cup in France. May the best team win! In rugby league: All the big stars scored – Alex Johnstone for Souths again, Ketoni Staggs twice, Selwyn Cobbo, Campbell Gillard, Reece Walsh and then Adam Reynolds capped it off with a try against his old Club for a great Broncos win on the Sunshine Coast 36-20 against South Sydney. In Auckland, Kiwi star, Jordan Rapana out-jumped Marcelo Montoya to score a brilliant try to spark the Raiders comeback to lock the scores up and force proceedings into golden point, only for – who else – Shaun Johnson to step up and coolly nail a 30M match-winner for the New Zealand Warriors 21-20 over the Canberra Raiders. Today, the Knights play the Melbourne Storm in Newcastle, while the Cowboys take on the Parramatta Eels in Townsville later. In sports Biz: US businessman, Josh Harris is the new owner of the Washington Commanders, which he purchased for a new record for a sports team in the world at US$6.05Billion. Harris is the managing owner of the New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia 76ers, purchased the NFL Club with 20 partners. The previous ownership group purchased the team for US$800Million in 1999 and put it on the market in November 2022. Prior to this, the last NFL franchise to be sold was the Denver Broncos, purchased by Walmart heir Rob Walton for US$4.65B last year. In combat sports: Ukrainian football Club, Polissya Zhytomyr has signed undefeated World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Oleksandr Usyk to play for them for one season after impressing in training. Usyk is set to defend his titles against WBA mandatory challenger - British fighter, Daniel Dubois on 26 August in Poland. In the Tour de France: Sprint King Jasper Philipsen was hoping for his fifth stage win of this year's Tour, on the flat 184.9Km route from Moutiers to Bourg-en-Bresse, but the peleton chased and failed to catch a four-man breakaway group with Kasper Asgreen claiming his first Tour de France stage victory holding on to win Stage 18. Meanwhile, Jonas Vingegaard maintained his comfortable overall lead with just three stages left. Tadej Pogacar remains seven minutes and 35 seconds behind the defending champion, with Britain's Adam Yates third. I’m off to the rugby, so that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 06 Episode 21 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a bright and warm Friday morning 21 July 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In Rugby: Caleb Muntz leads the Fiji Water Flying Fijians at flyhalf versus Tonga tomorrow on his Test debut with the explosive star power of halfback Frank Lomani inside him and Josua Tuisova outside him, with Captain and Centre Waisea Nayacalevu around him as well. Selestino Ravutaumada on one Wing and Isoa Nasilasila at lock are also on debut. At the end of this podcast, I take a closer look at this Test, stacked full of global rugby stars in Background Buzz. Also in rugby union, an Anzac invitational XV will play the British and Irish Lions in their July 2025 tour that also includes three Tests against the Wallabies. All five Australian Super Rugby teams will also get a shot at the combined best players from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. In rugby league: Junior Tupou scored twice and Apisai Koroisau also scored for Wests Tigers to hold a 14-12 lead at the break, but from then on, it was all one way traffic as the Dragons scored the only points of the second half with an impressive try from Mikaele Ravalawa for a 18-14 win. In the big clash at Sunshine Coast Stadium tonight, South Sydney Rabbitohs star, Latrell Mitchell has been ruled out against the Brisbane Broncos, despite completing yesterday’s captain’s run. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Souths want to give Mitchell another week off to recover from his calf injury. Also tonight, the New Zealand Warriors take on the Canberra Raiders at Go Media Stadium wherever that is – formerly known as Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland I think. On Saturday, the Knights play the Melbourne Storm in Newcastle, while the Cowboys take on the Parramatta Eels in Townsville later. And on Sunday, it’s the Panthers versus the Bulldogs at BlueBet Stadium. In sports Biz: As the FIFA Women’s World Cup began last night down under, FIFA President, Gianni Infantino declined to comment on pay disparities and their goal of offering equal prize money at the next Men’s and Women’s World Cups. “Focus on the positive, focus on the happiness, focus on the joy,” the FIFA President said instead — adding that he would discuss deeper issues in the game after the World Cup concludes next month While prize money for this FIFA Women’s World Cup totaling US$110Million, is more than three times the US$30M paid out at the 2019 World Cup for women, it is still only 25% of the US$440M awarded to Men’s teams in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar last year. In combat sports: The No. 1 UFC Middleweight contender, Dricus Du Plessis of South Africa, has pulled out of UFC293 in Sydney, Australia on 10 September according to UFC Middleweight Champion Israel Adesanya. Apparently Du Plessis has not recovered from beating Robert Whittaker at UFC290 earlier this month. And that’s a wrap! In rugby league: It’s a beautiful game isn’t it? News is breaking that the Newcastle Knights approached two-time premiership-winning Coach, Des Hasler prior to the Gold Coast Titans landing him as their big catch. The news comes amid continued speculation about the future of Knights Coach Adam O’Brien And what do you know - the day after the story on Phil Gould visiting their big bro in jail to “check on his wellbeing”, Wests Tigers announced the signings of Samuela and Latu Fainu from the Manly Sea Eagles on a A$4Million four-year deal for the pair combined. In the Tour de France: “I’m gone, I’m dead,” and with that, Tadej Pogacar conceded defeat to Jonas Vingegaard in the fight for the yellow jersey of the 2023 Tour de France, as Felix Gall won Stage 17 on the mighty Col de la Loze at the end of the 166km from Saint-Gervais. Pogacar crumbled with eight kilometres to the summit on the punishing 28km climb which peaks at 2,304M, as the gap between the top two blew out to seven-and-a-half minutes heading into Stage 18. In combat sports: The Next Big Thing of Aussie boxing - Paulo Aokuso took his undefeated streak to five wins with a comprehensive, but hard fought win over Renold Quinlan at Sydney’s Entertainment Quarter last night. Despite missing out on the KO he had predicted, the 26-year-old Aokuso still did enough for all three judges to score the fight 80-72 for a unanimous decision win. In football: The FIFA World Cup Group Games kicks off tonight in New Zealand in Group A with New Zealand versus Norway at 7pm at Eden Park Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau and in Group B – Australia versus Republic of Ireland at 8pm local time at Stadium Australia in Sydney/Gadigal. Ryan Giggs – remember him? The ex-Man U star is hoping to revive his career in the game after being cleared of domestic violence allegations made by his ex-girlfriend after prosecutors offered no evidence and withdrew the prosecution on Tuesday at Manchester Crown Court. Giggs left the Wales managerial job in the run-up to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar while facing trial. And that’s a wrap! Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 06 Episode 19 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on a cloudy and warm Wednesday morning 19 July 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In Breaking Rugby News in Fiji today: The race for Pasifika talent is on: A top French player agent has turned up in Nadi with a suitcase full of euros, to make a contract offer to Frank Lomani and three other players to join Top 14 French Clubs after the Rugby World Cup in France in September. Fijian or Tongan, only the French player agent knows and he has the cash to walk the talk! The other Breaking News exploding in Australia, is that the Victorian State government has axed the 2026 Commonwealth Games amid a mammoth cost blowout from A$2.6Billion budgeted to an estimated A$6B estimated. Since then the Commonwealth Games Committee and Commonwealth Games Australia, have hit back saying the budget only blew out because of changes made by the Victorian State government to their initial plans, and they also questioned the accuracy of his A$6B cost claim. Join me for Background Buzz at the end of this podcast where I dive into the new World Rugby 7s Series - “HSBC SVNS” launched by World Rugby yesterday. In rugby league: Bulldogs GM Phil Gould has confirmed that he visited former Manly Hooker Manase Fainu in jail to “check on his wellbeing.” Fainu was sentenced to eight years in prison for stabbing a Mormon Church leader back in 2019, a judgment his lawyer is appealing. Gould has also been in contact with Fainu’s talented younger brothers Latu and Samuela, but stopped short of suggestions he was keen to recruit the duo. I’ll let you be the judge on that one. The Eels have suffered a major blow with powerhouse Wing, Maika Sivo set to miss four games after he unsuccessfully tried to have his grade two careless high tackle charge reduced at the NRL judiciary last night. Sivo could have accepted a three-game ban if he’d taken the early guilty plea, but Brad Arthur chose to roll the dice. In the Tour de France: Defending champion, Jonas Vingegaard delivered a knockout blow to his nearest rival, Tadej Pogacar in the rolling 22.4Km Stage 16 hybrid time trial, from Passy to Combloux overnight, extending his lead from only 10 seconds after 15 stages now to one minute and 48 seconds heading into Stage 17. While this is a decisive advantage for Vingegaard, anything can still happen in what has been so far, a Tour of fine margins to this point. At Wimbledon: While Novak Djokovic was fined US$8,000 for smashing his racket against the net post during his Wimbledon Men’s Singles Final loss – his first loss in London for 10 years, the World No 2, banked US$1.6Million as runner-up. The final had a peak audience of 11.3 million viewers on the BBC– the largest viewing figures since 2016. In combat sports: Boxing fans worldwide have sent social media into meltdown, scouring the internet for images of that crazy Daniella Hemsley who flashed her boobs after winning her first fight in Dublin, Ireland on Saturday. Bula, Ma’lelei, Talofa and Welcome to Season 06 Episode 18 of Breakfast Bites by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news on another cloudy and warm Tuesday morning 18 July 2023. Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In rugby: The new World Rugby rankings show New Zealand has just missed out on overtaking France for second place, but Australia have fallen. The All Blacks beat South Africa 30-25 on Saturday and one more point would have seen them secure extra rankings points for winning by 16 points or more to lift them above the Rugby World Cup 2023 hosts. New Zealand remain third in the world, ahead of the fourth-placed Springboks and behind France and top-seeded Ireland. Eddie Jones' Australia are in trouble, dropping from seventh to eighth in the rankings after consecutive losses to Argentina and South Africa in The Rugby Championship. Wales are now one place behind their World Cup group rivals Australia, with Warren Gatland's men ranked ninth. Their fellow group opponents Georgia is ranked 11th, Fiji is 13th and Portugal is 16th. In rugby league: This Friday night’s game between the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Broncos at Sunshine Coast Stadium, promises to be a mouthwatering clash with ten stars returning, headlined by opposing superstar Fullbacks, Latrell Mitchell from injury and Reece Walsh from suspension. Nathan Cleary will be named at halfback for the Panthers, with their four ORIGIN III reps expected to play as well. Meanwhile, Parramatta Eels enforcer, Reagan Campbell-Gillard will likely be spending a month on the sideline for sliding his knees into the back of Titans’ hooker Chris Randall in an incident even Parramatta Coach Brad Arthur has conceded was “sloppy and lazy”. The Kangaroos and Blues star was charged with grade three dangerous contact and he is looking at four games on the sidelines with the early plea, but five if he fights the charge and is unsuccessful. In the Tour de France: Yesterday was the last rest day of the Tour de France 2023 with defending champion, Jonas Vingegaard clinging to a precious 10 second lead over his closest rival, Tadej Pogacar ahead of Stage 16 in the French alps. At Wimbledon: The All England Lawn Tennis Club has confirmed that they penalized Novak Djokovic US$8000, for “racket abuse” during his defeat by Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday. Djokovic later said that he wasn’t proud of the incident and accepted the officials sanction: “There’s not much to talk about,” Djokovic said when quizzed about it at the post-match press conference. “Yeah, just tough, tough couple of points. He played amazing to break my serve, which was enough to win the fifth. Not a great moment, but you just kind of have to accept it.” For TeivovoSports.com I’m Culden Kamea – please hit the like and subscribe buttons below if you want to receive more Pasifika sports highlights on Breakfast Bites.
