 79//How to Plan and Structure Your Meals to Balance Your Thyroid Hormones | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:39

Now, let’s talk about the blood sugar story, I know many of you have taken time to cut things out of your diet, but I want to make sure we cover this topic on a surface level before we better understand macronutrients.   The Blood sugar story goes like this: all carbohydrates are digested into sugar (glucose) when eaten. This glucose either gets used right away for fuel or gets stored as fat for later use. In order for this process to happen there is a chain of events that must take place.    The process goes like this: You eat a carb (fruit, bread, rice, etc.) Carb gets digested into sugar and enters your blood stream; Cellular respiration occurs and converts the sugar into a usable form of energy called glucose; Blood glucose levels rise;  INSULIN, a hormone that is secreted from the pancreas in response to elevated blood glucose levels, enters the blood cells; Insulin is responsible for transporting the glucose out of the blood and delivering it to your working muscles and brain to be used for energy to fuel the body.    Don’t get the wrong idea, carbs are good! They are the preferred fuel source for the body. Let’s continue.   Here is the problem.    Insulin signals the body to store the excess glucose into fat since it can’t be used as fuel! This is how the carbs can contribute to weight gain. When we consume too many carbs at one time we choose processed, sugary carbs that are devoid of fiber, we elevate our blood glucose levels too high and too fast causing an oversecretion of insulin. When our bodies can’t utilize all of that fuel from the carbs it leaves us feeling tired, irritable, light headed and craving more carbs. When we give into our cab cravings the cycle repeats itself until you take the necessary steps to balance your blood glucose (sugar) levels.    The solution. Remember not all carbs are created equal. Some elevate your blood glucose (sugar) levels much faster and higher than others. The key is to keep your blood sugar stable is to choose carbs that are higher in water and fiber content and therefore low on the glycemic index/load.    So what does your blood sugar regulation have to do with your thyroid?    Actually a lot more than you think!   When your blood sugar is constantly moving in and out of normal range, inflammatory chemicals are released into the bloodstream. This creates a cascade effect in the body, creating widespread chronic inflammation and ultimately negatively impacting thyroid and adrenals in many different ways.    Some common symptoms of blood sugar imbalance includes: Poor memory, forgetfulness Fatigue after meals or general fatigue Increased thirst and appetite Waist measurement is equal to or larger than hip measurement Feel shaky, jittery, tremors Blurred vision Depend on coffee to get going in the morning Lightheaded or agitated if meals are missed Crave sweets during the day or after meals agitated, easily upset, nervous Wake up nauseated   Sound familiar?    In modern times, many people are addicted to sugar, refined grains and carbohydrates, as well as fast foods and highly processed foods. Let’s start with metabolism. What is your metabolism? Metabolism is the process that converts energy (calories) from food and/or store energy (from fat or glycogen) into usable types of energy (aka fuel) in your body. A by-product of this conversion is heat. The heat that is created is important because as our bodies heat up we burn calories.   Which brings us to the next point, which is resting metabolism? The amount of energy (calories) it takes at rest, in a neutral temperature environment, while your digestive system is inactive to sustain daily life without activity. A person’s resting metabolism decreases with age and with the loss of lean body mass (muscle mass). When one consumes more calories than their resting metabolism, their weight increases. . . . There are 12 natural laws that affect our lives. I choose the last law I started in the episode today to change my original podcast episode and shift it to this. It's the law of inspired action. I couldn't get this episode topic out of my mind and new I needed to shift gears a bit.    Universal/ Gods Law Include: The Law of Vibration: this law shares that we are in constant motion moving forward or backward in our experiences.  The Law of Attraction: this is the most talked-about law and it uses manifestation to attract more of what we want in our lives. The Law of Oneness: we are all connected and is the first and most foundational law of the universe. This is activated when compassion is exercised. The Law of Compensation: whatever you sow you will reap is the mantra for the law of compensation. This law is activated when you contribute to what you're manifesting. The Law of Gender: Gender relates to masculine and feminine energy that exists in all things. To apply this you have to achieve a balance between the two energies. The law of Cause and Effect: All actions have an equal and opposite reaction, whether the reaction is good or bad there is a consequence.  The Law of Relativity: Your reality boils down to your perception of the world. It allows you to understand life in a greater way with more compassion and comparison.  The Law of Perpetual Transmutation of Energy: Your actions are proceeded by thoughts and tend to fluctuate. You activate this law by remaining positive regardless of your surrounding energies. The Law of Polarity:  There are positives and negatives to everything. You can activate this law by uncovering what's happening on the oppositive end of the spectrum.  The law of Rhythm: This law promotes fluidity. You should activate this law by acknowledging your inner rhythm and not fighting against it.  The Law of Inspired Action: Similar to the law of action you attract what you want in life. You activate this law by creating a space of internal guidance through listening to your higher power. Mediation and sitting quietly can help with this law. . . . She's also published her first nonfiction book, entitled, The Wellness-Empowered Woman™, which is an Amazon best-seller and a Mom's Choice Award gold winner.   She’s on the Entrepreneurship Advisory Board for the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Alumni Council for Boston University and has been a Women in Management Facilitator for Stanford University.
