Pop Psych 101
Summary: In an effort to educate and normalize, two therapists, Ryan Engelstad and Hayley Roberts, talk candidly about mental health and illness through the lens of movies, music, books, and TV. Common pop culture mental health tropes are analyzed, and the accuracy of their portrayals are in question, for better or worse. PopPsych can be raw and real, and very serious; it can also be very funny. If we really want to normalize the conversation about mental health, then we need to start having real and normal conversations. Covering the podcast The Shrink Next Door and questioning the ethics of the real life psychiatrist, Ike Herschkopf, had us wondering what Ike and Marty's sessions looked like. So, this week's bonus episode, Ryan and Mike role play a therapy session, and Ryan tries to infiltrate Mike's life. Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! When Journalist, Joe Nocera, realized that his Hampton's neighbor, Ike, had suddenly moved, he knew things were off. However, there was no way he could prepare himself for the story he was about to uncover. The man that Joe thought was his neighbor's maintenance man, Marty, actually turned out to be the owner of the property, and Ike, had been Marty's Psychiatrist for 30 years. This week we look into the ethical violations that Ike had to betray to find himself in almost complete control of Marty's life -- We look at this through Ryan's eyes, as a Therapist, and wonder where he thinks this relationship got off the rails. We also look at this through Mike perspective as a patient, who seems to understand Marty's gullibility. Up Top: We cover a news story. Netflix has just announced that they have edited the suicide scene from season 1 of 13 Reasons Why. Mike thinks it's a marketing scheme, and a bit late. Ryan says, it can't be too late. Ryan has an example of how to handle yourself if a bully is making fun of you. He offers two examples: How to, and, how not to. Mike wasn't the best person to do this exercise with. Up Top: Ryan challenges Mike with a news story about mystics and psychics. A larger percentage of people are seeking out this kind of "Magick" than are going to therapy or to a psychiatrist. Mike offers that if it finds the person peace or healing, then he has no problem with it, but Ryan argues that some people are being swindled for money and should go the route that has science to back it up. The Show: Bullying: The definition of bullying How to spot a bully How a bully is made How to treat a bully The motives of a bully What bullying does to others emotionally Science finds literal brain changes is bullying victims Synopsis: This week we look at the character Billy Hargrove in Netflix's stranger things. Billy moves to Indiana, and isn't so happy with his new hometown. Through the course of the series we see Billy make fun of, attack, threaten and demean the kids around him. After his body was taken over by the Mind Flayer in season 3, we find out that Billy was abused as a child and is broken. Bullying is often thought of as a normal part of growing up and going to school. Tell that to a victim of bullying. Now, in the age of social media, bullying is the worst it's ever been, with kids unable to escape the threats from their classmates. Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Bonus Episode: This week's main episode talked about a time-traveling alien, and that got us thinking. How was mental-illness, especially diagnosis that present symptoms of hallucinations, looked at throughout history as compared to the present. Was it ignored? Accepted? Ridiculed? Met with fear? Ryan does some major over-analyzing and we make some guesses at those questions. Find Us: See our website We have a Blog! Ryan always had a Blog! Trigger Warning: Conversations About Suicide We had a member post a beautiful clip from, of all things, the TV show Doctor Who. The episode is called "Vincent And The Doctor", and features heavy themes of Vincent and his battle with Mental Illness. We took a long look at Vincent and the era he found himself in. The people of his time weren't equipped with the knowledge of what he was going through mentally, instead of understanding he was labeled a "mad man". He was also known as a very lonely man, maybe his status in the world added to that feeling. Vincent Van Gogh killed himself at age 37 with a gunshot wound to the chest. Trigger Warning: Self-Harm This one brings a lot of nostalgia to the table. We're talking skateboarding, baggy shirts, small parties, and the Mid90s. Jonah Hill's the mid90s is an intense look at the life of a 13 year old boy who's growing up in an abusive household. Masculinity plays a huge role is in the issues Stevie is dealing with, as well as influence from his group of friends, and possibly even the role his estranged father played before he was even born. Synopsis Stevie is a 13 year old boy growing up in the 1990’s los angeles area. He seems like a sweet and kind kid, and he is, but he’s also angry and lonely and physically abused by his older brother, Ian. Stevie is looking for friends, and he finds them in a group of rowdy teens down at the local skate shop. Stevie is taken. He immediately wants to be like them and buys himself a board with stolen money from his mom's drawer. His new friends nickname him sunburn and they all start to get closer to each other, however, in between all of this good fun, we see the dark side to Stevie's life as well. He continues to get pummeled by his brother, he is filled with anger and takes that out on himself with pain, he also starts smoking and partying. There’s a lot to be said to the loyalty he finds in his friends, and we do see him grow throughout the summer, but we don’t land in a happily ever after place. We end in the hospital after a drunk driving accident where Stevie was hurt. Nonetheless, friends by his side destined to continue on in the same place we started Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Ryan always had a Blog! Millennials are having a big effect on big business, and no industry is safe; especially cereal. Ryan and Mike play a game of "Killing or Saving" where Ryan asks Mike about an industry and Mike has to guess if Millennials are killing that industry, or saving it. Discussions arise as to how or why the millennial is killing or saving something, but most importantly, Mike and Ryan are very concerned about cereal. Find Us: See our website We have a Blog! After missing last week's episode due to some struggle with depression and an day in the ER after experiencing Olfactory Hallucination, or, phantom smells, Mike is back. Wanting to specifically talk about how mental illness is treated in hospitals and Doctors' offices, Mike and Ryan take a look at the Netflix Original, Brain On Fire. The coin is in the air about how to treat patients who present symptoms that could be construed as physical health or mental health. We have to remember how much red tape are in the hospital's way due to insurance; Doctors don't want to give us unnecessary hospital bills if they can't prove a reason for overnight stays or certain procedures. We also have to understand that those diagnosed with mental illness feel neglected when a possible health problem is written of as a psychiatric issue, and some mental health patients just want there to be a physical reason for their illness and are hoping that, just maybe, they can be cured if only they were taken seriously and given more tests. It's a tough one. Synopsis: Susanna Cahalan is a 21 year old woman quickly excelling in her career at The New York Post. She’s happy. She’s falling in love, and for all she knows, she’s healthy. That is until Susanna suddenly begins to experience an array of health problems that are progressing at a breakneck speed, and, they’re unpredictable. She shows signs of visual hallucinations, audio hallucinations, manic episodes, depressive episodes, paranoia, personality change, confusion, poor memory, and more If it weren’t for another symptom, the Doctors and hospitals might have written her off as Bipolar, or Schizophrenic, and located her to a more equipped facility. She was lucky though, she also had the seizures. Due to the incredible hearts and knowledge of just a couple Doctors, they were able to look past signs of mental illness, run more diagnostic testing, and figure out the neurological dysfunction that was torturing her and her family. On April 8, 2000, Mark Hogancamp was attacked by five men and left for dead outside of a bar in Kingston, NY. After nine days in a coma, he awoke to find he had no memory of his previous adult life. He had to relearn how to eat, walk and write. When his state-sponsored rehabilitative therapies ran out, Mark took his recovery into his own hands. In his backyard, he created a new world entirely within his control - a 1:6 scale World War II town he named Marwencol. Using doll alter egos of his friends and family, his attackers and himself, Mark enacted epic battles and recreated memories, which he captured in strikingly realistic photographs. Those photos eventually caught the eye of the art world, which lead to a series of gallery exhibitions, the award-winning documentary "Marwencol," the acclaimed book "Welcome to Marwencol," and a new identity for a man once ridiculed for playing with dolls. That's the true story. Synopsis: Today we are covering the 2018 Drama/Fantasy Movie, Welcome To Marwen Mike is out today and Christine Michelle from the Antidotes: Stories in Medicine podcast steps in like a hero to keep this mental health podcast rolling. Christine, a Nurse practitioner, for EMS and Army Medic and seen her fare share of PTSD. Ryan has also seen his fair share right in his office.
