Pop Psych 101
Summary: In an effort to educate and normalize, two therapists, Ryan Engelstad and Hayley Roberts, talk candidly about mental health and illness through the lens of movies, music, books, and TV. Common pop culture mental health tropes are analyzed, and the accuracy of their portrayals are in question, for better or worse. PopPsych can be raw and real, and very serious; it can also be very funny. If we really want to normalize the conversation about mental health, then we need to start having real and normal conversations. Ryan and Mike acknowledge some of the feedback they received about last week's episode on Autism. For this episode on Speak, they look at the graphic novel's intense portrayal of a rape survivor's story. Both Ryan and Mike are deeply affected by this moving and real story. Mike is angry about the subject and often has tunnel vision about reporting these attacks to the police. Luckily, Ryan has experience working with survivors and is able to explain that there is no hard and fast rule on what to do after an assault, only that it is up to the survivor to decide how to handle the situation. Synopsis: Today, we are covering Speak: The Graphic Novel by Laurie Halse Anderson, Illustrated by Emily Carroll "Speak up for yourself―we want to know what you have to say." From the first moment of her freshman year at Merryweather High, Melinda knows this is a big fat lie, part of the nonsense of high school. She is friendless―an outcast―because she busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, so now nobody will talk to her, let alone listen to her. Through her work on an art project, she is finally able to face what really happened that night: She was raped by an upperclassman, a guy who still attends Merryweather and is still a threat to her. After a short conversation about the "Top Ten Happiest Countries In The World", Mike and Ryan breakdown the portrayal of Autism in the 1988 classic, Rain Man. This is an important subject to Ryan, because he deals with patients who are caretakers, and he's seen firsthand the frustrations that can pile up. Mike has huge opinions about the character Charlie Babbitt, going as far to say that ,Charlie, is his most hated character in cinematic history. Not too far off, is Ryan with a questionable rating for the portrayal of Autism in this film. Synopsis: When car dealer Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) learns that his estranged father has died, he returns home to Cincinnati, where he discovers that he has an autistic older brother named Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) and that his father's $3 million fortune is being left to the mental institution in which Raymond lives. Motivated by his father's money, Charlie checks Raymond out of the facility in order to return with him to Los Angeles. The brothers' cross-country trip ends up changing both their lives. Mike embarrasses him self with an impersonation of Adam Sandler. The guys give a little background into how they pick their episodes and encourage anyone to join their mental health support group if they'd like to help pick new episodes. Ryan and Mike go deep into the motivations behind Barry Egan's anger and social anxiety issues, which they believe have a lot to do with his upbringing, and especially the treatment he receives from his 7 sisters. Ryan gives us some examples of ways to deal with social anxiety including exposure therapy. Synopsis: Today we are covering the 2002 film, Punch Drunk. Starring Adam Sandler as Barry Egan, Emily Watson as Lena Leonard, and Phillip seymour Hoffman as Dean Trumbell or Mattress Man. Although susceptible to violent outbursts, bathroom supply business owner Barry Egan (Adam Sandler) is a timid and shy man by disposition, leading a lonely, uneventful life -- partly due to the constant berating he suffers from his seven sisters. However, several events transpire that shake up Egan's mundane existence, one of which is falling in love with one sister's co-worker, Lena Leonard (Emily Watson). But the romance is threatened when Egan falls victim to an extortionist. Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Ryan always had a Blog! Mike embarrasses him self with an impersonation of Robin Williams. It's very very bad. Ryan and Mike talk about Rapper Big Sean, and the backlash he has received for making his mental health public. The guy opine that we should start by believing someone as our first reaction, and rushing to judge someone is the opposite of where we should be headed. The breakdown of Good Will Hunting gets interesting as Ryan and Mike's opinion on the portrayal of the Therapist, Sean, slightly differs. Mike longs for a more personal relationship with his Therapist, while Ryan notes the importance of the professional relationship and what the goals of Therapy are. Synopsis: Will Hunting (Matt Damon) has a genius-level IQ but chooses to work as a janitor at MIT. When he solves a difficult graduate-level math problem, his talents are discovered by Professor Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgard), who decides to help the misguided youth reach his potential. When Will is arrested for attacking a police officer, Professor Lambeau makes a deal to get leniency for him if he will get treatment from therapist Sean Maguire (Robin Williams).
