Pop Psych 101
Summary: In an effort to educate and normalize, two therapists, Ryan Engelstad and Hayley Roberts, talk candidly about mental health and illness through the lens of movies, music, books, and TV. Common pop culture mental health tropes are analyzed, and the accuracy of their portrayals are in question, for better or worse. PopPsych can be raw and real, and very serious; it can also be very funny. If we really want to normalize the conversation about mental health, then we need to start having real and normal conversations. This week Ryan and Mike cover the much requested, Joker. A first here at Pop Psych 101, the guys actually had to leave their houses to see this movie. There is a lot to unpack with this portrayal of mental illness in pop culture, and though, both the guys have different viewpoints, they know that portraying mental health issues as a main character trait to audiences is no laughing matter. Today's episode is an important one. Comedians are in a singular place to tell true to life stories that can break barriers and transcend stigmas. Ryan and Mike's hearts are full with the masterpiece of stand up from Comedian Gary Gulman that is, The Great Depresh. A recommended watch for anyone interested in learning about a true story of depression in an incredibly accessible way. Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Ryan is back with a twist on Mike Reacts. This season, Ryan wants to teach us some unconventional coping skills. This week, Ryan introduces Mike to "Forest Bathing", a coping skill so obscure, Mike gets confused and starts planning a trip to the forest for a literal bath. - Title quote by John Muir Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Do creative genius and mental illness go hand-in-hand? That's a burning question on Mike's mind this week and he looks to the 2005 documentary "The Devil And Daniel Johnston" for answers. With Mike out on hiatus, Ryan gets a little help from our friends. Dean, Host of the podcasts Podscure and How Are Ya Now?, sits down and talks grief and family dysfunction in the series Fleabag. Synopsis: A dry-witted woman, known only as Fleabag, has no filter as she navigates life and love in London while trying to cope with tragedy. The angry, grief-riddled woman tries to heal while rejecting anyone who tries to help her, but Fleabag continues to keep up her bravado through it all. Comic actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge stars as the titular character on the series, which is based on Waller-Bridge's 2013 one-woman show of the same name. Based on the same-titled bestseller by Liane Moriarty, "Big Little Lies" weaves a darkly comedic tale of murder and mischief in the tranquil beachfront town of Monterey, Calif. Amidst doting moms, successful husbands, beautiful children, and stunning homes exists a community fueled by rumors and divided into haves and have-nots, exposing fractured relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, and friends and neighbors. Told through the eyes of three mothers -- Madeline, Celeste and Jane -- the series' narrative explores society's myths regarding perfection and its romanticization of marriage, sex, parenting and friendship. Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley star as the three prominent "mothers of Monterey." Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Ryan always had a Blog! Howard Hughes Jr. was an American business magnate, investor, record-setting pilot, engineer, film director, and philanthropist, known during his lifetime as one of the most financially successful individuals in the world. He first became prominent as a film producer, and then as an influential figure in the aviation industry. Later in life, he became known for his eccentric behavior and reclusive lifestyle—oddities that were caused in part by a worsening obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), and chronic pain from a near-fatal plane crash. Today we take a look at Martin Scorsese's vision and Leonardo DiCaprio's portrayal of The Aviator. Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Ryan always had a Blog!
