Yesterday's morning audio comment suggested that investors should sleep through the US presidential debate. In the aftermath of the debate, I stand by my original statement.
Today we turn our focus back to the emerging markets and examine the factors that have driven performance in 2020, plus highlight what might influence performance for the balance of the year and how to think about positioning. European and Asian investors can sleep through today's US presidential debate without fear of missing out. Debates rarely launch new policy initiatives. The spin after the debate is what matters. Polarization means that committed supporters will not change their views, and the number of undecided voters is lower than four years ago?but still large enough to affect the election outcome.
Humanity is facing two important trends. Over the next 30 years, our numbers will grow and our average age will increase. There are demographic trends that are taking place alongside huge structural shifts. This is the FUTURE OF HUMANS. What are some of the biggest areas of change for humankind? What are the investment implications? What areas are expected to have the biggest changes? How much of an influence has COVID been? Today's guest: Laura Kane, Head of Thematic Investing for the UBS Chief Investment Office. Host: Anthony Pastore.
Reports of US President Trump's limited tax payments are unlikely to matter to markets, unless they change perceptions about the election. In the polarized world of US politics, it is only floating voters who are likely to be influenced. The story probably needs to be viewed alongside Tuesday's presidential debate.
We check in with the UBS US Office of Public Policy to discuss the latest developments within the beltway and beyond. Our conversation today touches on the status of additional fiscal stimulus, an update on SCOTUS, a preview of the first Presidential debate and more. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died on September 18, 2020, after serving 27 years on the bench, championing for race and gender equality. She leaves behind a legacy of resilience and inspiration for millions. The question now is, what's next for the Supreme Court? Is there a precedent set for past situations like this? Will President Trump get a nominee confirmed BEFORE the election? Does this event change the political landscape? Today's guest: Shane Lieberman, UBS US Office of Public Policy. Host: Anthony Pastore.
Today we recap the week that was, including the factors behind the recent selling pressure in risk assets, global developments with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic and more. Plus as always, preview for you what we can expect in the week ahead. Featured is Mike Gourd, Investment Associate Americas from the UBS Chief Investment Office. Host: Daniel Cassidy
US durable goods orders data is due. This is a split statistic. We know US consumers, after a lockdown spent watching home makeover shows, have rushed to refurnish their houses and spend accumulated savings on consumer durable goods. On the other hand, an economist toiling at home using their own desk, computer equipment and log-burning stove removes the need for their employer to invest in capital equipment.
Today we break down for you the options to consider when it comes to your retirement plan in the midst of changing employers. Featured is Ainsley Carbone, Total Wealth Strategist Americas, UBS Chief Investment Office. Host: Daniel Cassidy
Financial markets have remained volatile, but there has been little economic news to drive the moves. The global economic bounceback continues (and is arguably stronger than initially expected), and central banks remain firmly committed to keeping rates low for a long period.
Today we explore the evolution of the video game industry, potential transformations on the horizon, emerging trends and more. Featured is Reid Gilligan, Equity Associate Analyst Americas, UBS Chief Investment Office. Host: Daniel Cassidy
US President Trump was critical of China at the (virtual) UN General Assembly. Markets have expected strongly worded tweets and comments, without much substance in terms of policy ahead of the November election. However, Chinese President Xi, without specifically naming the US, was also critical. The rising temperature of Chinese comments is a little more troubling for markets.
US Fed Chair Powell and US Treasury Secretary Mnuchin testify to Congress (Mnuchin actually has a degree in economics). We know what Powell will say?there are statements of the obvious about employment and output being below normal, and a call for fiscal stimulus.
There has been much discussion over what a new normal might look like for the global economy, though lately, markets perhaps seem more focused on when the return of more normal economic conditions might occur.
