In this podcast, we're going to talk about scoliosis, kyphosis, and lordosis, and how these conditions relate to vitamin D.  Scoliosis is an abnormal curve in the back.  Kyphosis is more of a hunchback.  Lordosis is a condition where the person has a swayback.  When you look up the cause of scoliosis, it's very unclear. A study out of Hong Kong found that 30% of people with scoliosis have osteopenia. Osteopenia is the start of bone loss, which can be caused by a lack of calcium or (more likely) low vitamin D3. A few symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency:   • Scoliosis   • Kyphosis   • Lordosis   • Muscle spasm   • Bowed legs  • Knocked knees  Vitamin D has a lot to do with the development of the skeletal system, especially the spine. It's very important for a mother to have enough vitamin D while carrying her baby and while breastfeeding. But, 50% of pregnant women are deficient in vitamin D.  How to know if you're vitamin D deficient? If you press on your breastbone or shin and it's tender—that could be a sign of a vitamin D deficiency.  Other signs of a vitamin D deficiency:   • Muscle spasms   • Depression   • Weekend immune system  Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods. Saturday & Sunday 9 am to 5 pm EST. USA Only. Take Dr. Berg's Free Keto Mini-Course! In this podcast, I want to talk to you about black pepper. Is it good, or is it bad? The truth is, there’s something very good and very bad about black pepper. Let me explain.  The main phytonutrient in black pepper that benefits your health is called piperine.  Pepper can: • Relieve stomach aches • Improves dopamine and serotonin levels • Reduce inflammation • Provide vitamin K, iron, and magnesium • Improves bioavailability of some compounds (by up to 2000%) By far, the most amazing part of black pepper is its ability to increase the bioavailability of other compounds, including: • Curcumin • Selenium • B12 • B6 • Vitamin A The problem is that piperine can also increase the bioavailability of toxic substances. It can prevent your liver from getting rid of toxins in the body, so you will retain it.  It’s not good if you’re taking certain medications, including: • Lithium • Tegretol • Rifampin • Dilantin • Viramune XR Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods.  Doesn't Keto Cause Gallstones Eating All That Fat? | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 367

Call 1-540-299-1557 with your questions about Keto, Intermittent Fasting or the use of Dr. Berg products. Consultants are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 9 pm EST. Saturday & Sunday 9 am to 5 pm EST. USA Only. Take Dr. Berg's Free Keto Mini-Course! In this podcast, we’re going to talk about keto and gallstones. Can you do the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting if you have a gallstone?   What is a gallstone made of?  There are several different types of gallstones, but the most common is the cholesterol gallstone.  The different types of gallstones contain several of the same ingredients, such as:  • Cholesterol   • Bilirubin   • Phosphates  • Calcium carbonate What causes gallstones? It’s mainly a combination of two things: 1. Too much cholesterol  2. Too little bile  The most important thing you need to know about gallstones:  • The composition of a gallstone is not the same thing as bile  Another important point about gallstones:  • Fasting does not cause gallstones What can cause a super-saturated amount of cholesterol? A situation where the gallbladder is not contracting anymore. It’s not releasing bile. It just sits there, and cholesterol comes in and forms stones. If you’re not triggering your gallbladder to release its contents, over a long period of time, that could cause a gallstone. What triggers the release of bile from the gallbladder? The answer is saturated fats. A ketogenic diet is a low-carb high-fat diet. So, when you do keto, you’re going to be releasing a lot of bile on a regular basis. If you add intermittent fasting, you’re going to concentrate the bile.  * Healthy keto and intermittent fasting may actually decrease the risk of gallstones.  * What increases the risk of gallstones is a low-fat diet.  Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods.  Adrenal Insufficiency and Low Cortisol: Symptoms, Causes & Solutions | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 1437

In this podcast, we're going to talk about adrenal insufficiency and low cortisol. I've talked a lot about the adrenal gland and cortisol, but I want to touch on a condition called Addison's, which is an autoimmune condition.  By the time you notice Addison's complications, over 90% of your adrenal glands are destroyed. This means you're not able to produce enough cortisol and other hormones. Symptoms of this are: • Fatigue • Weakness • Weight loss • Can't sleep • Salt cravings • Low tolerance to stress Though cortisol helps the body respond to stress, it actually has over 200 other functions throughout the body. It helps regulate blood pressure, immune response, and insulin levels. In fact, it can help counter hypoglycemia.  What causes Addison's? There are three primary things:  1. Tuberculosis  Around 25% of the population has TB. However, it can remain dormant until later in life. I recommend 20,000 IUs of vitamin D to combat TB 2. Fungus Certain funguses can cause cortisol levels to drop. This often goes unnoticed.  3. Stress and trauma Both mental and physical stress can cause Addison's disease. Stressors can cause the adrenals to shut down or becomes overwhelmed. I recommend using acupressure to help the adrenal glands function properly. Just to the right of the belly button, use your thumb and middle finger to apply pressure. This will help relieve and extract stress.  Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods.  Sleeping Pills and Insomnia | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 775

I'm also going to show you how to use certain acupressure techniques to help get rid of stress and sleep better. I understand the feeling of not being able to sleep. It can feel like torture. I really want to help you learn the best way to sleep better.  The two big problems with sleeping pills: 1. 6 out of 10 people experience side effects from sleeping pills A few side effects of sleeping pills:  • Drowsiness  • Confusion  • Forgetfulness  • Tiredness during the day 2. Sleeping pills may only give you a small amount of extra sleep (less than 30 minutes), and only help you go to sleep 8-20 minutes faster. How to get rid of insomnia naturally: 1. Read a book instead of watching TV before bed 2. Walk (45-60 minutes)  3. Stretch before bed 4. Neck technique  5. Avoid too much caffeine  Another good remedy for sleep disorders:   • L-tryptophan (take on an empty stomach)  The sleep aid I recommend not only has l-tryptophan, but it also has all sorts of other ingredients to help extract stress and allow you to drift off into a wonderful sleep. Not only will it help you get to sleep faster, but it will also help you wake up more refreshed.  Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods.  Will Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Break Your Fast? | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 254

Talk to a Dr. Berg Keto Consultant today and get the help you need on your journey (free consultation). In this podcast, we’re going to talk about apple cider vinegar and fasting. Apple cider vinegar does have carbohydrates. So, will apple cider vinegar break your fast? One tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (ACV) has .01g of carbohydrates. So it’s not really going to break the fast more than a nanosecond.  Balsamic vinegar has 3g of carbs, and rice vinegar has 6g of carbs. So, comparatively, these two types of vinegar both have a lot more carbs than apple cider vinegar. But, if you’re just using a small amount as a salad dressing, I think it’s going to be just fine.  What is vinegar? Vinegar is mainly acetic acid. Acetic acid comes from acetic acid bacteria that ferment carbs. It breaks down certain carbohydrates with enzymes and eventually turns them into vinegar. Fermentation is pretty much the breakdown of carbs, sugar, or alcohol by bacteria.  The really interesting thing about apple cider vinegar is that it has a tiny amount of carbohydrates, but it still has a lot of benefits.  A few apple cider benefits:  • It can help stabilize blood sugars  • It may lower insulin  • It can help improve insulin resistance  Anything that decreases insulin will help you lose weight. Because apple cider vinegar stabilizes your blood sugar, your hunger will go down, and your energy will go up.  You don’t have to worry about consuming apple cider vinegar while fasting. In fact, I actually encourage it. Apple cider vinegar may even help you fast for longer and have more energy.  Dr. Today, we’re going to talk about how to get rid of bloating and abdominal distension.  The major source of stomach bloating is microbial fermentation. This is the chemical breakdown of carbohydrates by a microbe. These microbes have the ability to breakdown fiber, whereas the body can’t.  When the microbes breakdown these undigestible fibers, they turn them into some interesting things: 1. SCFA (small-chain fatty acids) 2. Lactic acid  3. Methane  4. Hydrogen  5. CO2 6. Nitrogen  7. Hydrogen sulfide  What you can do to help reduce bloating: 1. Adjust or eliminate your consumption of certain carbs/fiber like:  • Fruit  • Garlic  • Onions  • Asparagus   • Milk   • Yogurt  • Beans 2. Add a good probiotic  3. Try certain foods to reduce bloating:  • Fennel   • Ginger  • Anise  • Peppermint  4. Take apple cider vinegar or betaine hydrochloride  Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods. With the diet I recommend, fats make up about 70% of your total calories.  Why low-fat diets don’t work: Well, there are a lot of things in fat that we need, such as fat-soluble vitamins and essential fatty acids. Fat is also needed to make structural parts of our tissues—including cell membranes.   Dangers of an ultra low-fat diet: 1. Decrease in vitamins A, D, E, K 2. Risk of mental problems  3. Increased risk of cancer 4. Decrease in HDL/increase in triglycerides  5. Decreased fat—increased carbs  6. Never satisfied—hungry 7.  Will Zero Carb Alcohol Stop Ketosis? | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 197

Today I’m going to answer the question, “will zero carb alcohol stop ketosis?”  Has carbs:  • Beer  • Wine   • Mixed drinks   • Coolers Has no carbs:  • Whiskey   • Vodka  • Brandy  • Tequila  • Dry martini  Alcohol does not turn to sugar. So, is alcohol keto-friendly? Alcohol has seven calories per gram, whereas carbohydrate has four calories per gram. These calories have to go somewhere. Despite the fact that it doesn’t turn to sugar or raise insulin levels, the alcohol calories will turn into fat. Within one minute, it’s already into your bloodstream and up to your brain. Alcohol goes to the liver, where the liver considers it a priority. In the liver, you have an enzyme, which breaks the alcohol down into a highly toxic chemical.  This chemical can create:   • Fibrosis  • Inflammation   • Fatty liver  • Oxidation This chemical can also stop fat burning.  Alcohol depletes:  • Vitamins B1 and B12  • Folate   • Zinc  • Vitamins D and A  • And more Realize what your body has to do to get rid of this alcohol. If you’re going to drink, try to drink small amounts and make sure your diet is super healthy to counter the complications, side effects, and nutritional deficiencies that alcohol can create.  Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods.  Baking Soda vs Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) for Indigestion: Which is Better? | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 476

Talk to a Dr. Berg Keto Consultant today and get the help you need on your journey (free consultation). Today we’re going to talk about which is better for digestion, baking soda, or apple cider vinegar (ACV)? There is no doubt that both of these home remedies for indigestion work. But I want to talk about the long-term effect of baking soda vs. apple cider vinegar.  Hypochlorhydria is a situation where you either don’t have enough stomach acid, or the acid is weak. The purpose of stomach acid is to help break down protein, to help kill pathogens, and to help with the absorption of minerals and trace minerals.  Symptoms of hypochlorhydria:  • GERD  • Acid reflux   • Indigestion  • Anemia  • Constipation   • Stomach infections  • Malabsorption   • Carcinoma   • Heartburn    Baking soda vs. Apple cider vinegar: Baking soda Baking soda for indigestion will make you feel better because it’s going to help remove some of that excess acid in your esophagus. But, the next time you eat, you’re still going to have the same symptoms because it’s not corrective. Baking soda also contains a tremendous amount of sodium. When you increase sodium, you deplete potassium, which is connected to many different conditions. You also deplete chloride. This can cause you to deplete hydrochloric acid in your stomach and then cause you to need more baking soda.   Apple cider vinegar  Apple cider vinegar is a great natural remedy for indigestion. You need to dilute it. Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and take it before you eat. The fluids in your stomach should be acid, but the blood in the body should be slightly alkaline. Alkalizing the body is not the best thing to do in every situation.  Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods. Autophagy   This is a condition where your body is recycling damaged proteins and clearing out microbes.  • Increases at 18+ hrs. 3. Inflammation  You can really see a drop in inflammation when you do OMAD (one meal a day). This also applies to sickness and speeding up the recovery process.   • A drop in inflammation may happen at 23+ hrs.  4. Cancer  With cancer, consider doing OMAD with periodic prolonged fasting. This helps lower glucose and glutamine. Also, when you do eat, consume a lot of cruciferous vegetables.   • These effects may happen after 23+ hrs. 5. Stem cell  This is a cell that hasn’t turned into anything yet. When you do a periodic fast for 72 hours, you’re going to stimulate some stem cells. This can help build new tissue.   • These effects may happen after 72+ hrs.  6. Stubborn weight  If you have a really stubborn weight situation, consider doing OMAD every other day. Make sure you’re getting your nutrients.   • For stubborn weight, try eating one meal every 48 hours. 7. Diabetes  This is a problem with excess sugar. With diabetes, you can really help the blood sugar situation with fasting. The problem is that you must check your blood sugars routinely, and talk to your doctor about adjusting your medications. Check with your doctor and fast gradually.  Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods. In this podcast, we're going to talk about what to do if you can't fall asleep without carbs.  Why can't I fall asleep without carbs? It can take a long time to fix insulin resistance, even once you make the switch to a ketogenic diet. With insulin resistance, you have higher amounts of insulin. With keto, you consume lower amounts of carbohydrates. But, you're still going to have high insulin despite cutting out the carbs because of the resistance problem.  Higher amounts of insulin can push the blood sugars down too low in the middle of the night. With low blood sugars, you have counter hormones that keep your blood sugars from going down too low. The two main ones are cortisol and adrenaline. These two hormones are behind many sleeping problems.  What to do if you can't fall asleep without carbs: 1. Time (as you fix insulin resistance, this problem will get better) 2. Take electrolytes (potassium, magnesium, and calcium) 3. Take apple cider vinegar before bed 4. Adjust the amount of protein you consume as your last meal 5. Consume more vegetables  6. Take vitamin B1 7. Limit caffeine consumption 8. Take exogenous ketones before bed 9. Get more vitamin D by being in the sun or by taking vitamin D Dr. I this podcast, we’re going to talk about the benefits of probiotics that you may have never heard before.  Well-known health benefits of probiotics:  • Helps with digestion   • Decreases inflammation   • Gets rid of gas/bloating   • Fights against pathogens   • Good bacteria help digest fiber  • Good bacteria make vitamins (biotin, vitamin K) Little-known benefits of probiotics:  • Decreases stress  • Elevates the mood   • Decreases acne  • Helps with blood sugar control   • Decreases body odor   • Promotes better sleep   • Improves sinuses   • Supports weight loss  I would recommend probiotic supplements that are in a liquid form that can survive the stomach.  I also recommend taking your probiotics before bed. Start by taking a very small amount and gradually work up to taking a tablespoon. If you find yourself detoxifying or feeling congested, then start taking smaller amounts again over a long period of time.  You have to let your system get used to the new good bacteria that you’re adding. The good bacteria kill off the bad bacteria, and you can have a little bit of an immune reaction going on in your gut. But, overall probiotics may help improve gut health and much more.  Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods.  The Difference Between the Colon and Intestines | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 322

Talk to a Dr. Berg Keto Consultant today and get the help you need on your journey (free consultation). In this podcast, we’re going to talk about the unique difference between the small intestine and the large intestines.  The small intestine: The small intestine is a lot longer. There are three parts:  • The first part is 10-15 inches  • The second part is about 8 ft.   • The last part is 8-13 ft. 90% of all the digestion occurs in the small intestine. You have enzymes that are generated from the pancreas and the small intestine that help break down proteins, carbohydrates, and fat.  In the first part of the small intestine, you have the contents of the stomach and some of the juices from the pancreas coming out to help neutralize the acid from the stomach. You also have the absorption of iron happening here.  The next part of the small intestine is where you will absorb certain vitamins and nutrients. In the last part of the small intestine, you will absorb and recycle bile salts. You’re also going to absorb vitamin B12, fat, fat-soluble vitamins, and certain electrolytes.  The small intestine is alkaline, which triggers certain enzymes. When the microbes from the large intestine back up and get into the small intestine, that’s called SIBO. SIBO can cause nutritional deficiencies and a lot of bloating.  The large intestine is a bit smaller at around 5 ft.  This is where fiber starts to ferment. You’re also going to absorb water, fluids, certain electrolytes, salts, and potassium. There are a lot more bacteria in the large intestine than in the small intestine.  The pH of the colon is going to be more acidic to help kill pathogens that should not be there. But, it doesn’t affect good bacteria.  When the fiber is fermented, it’s going to turn into small chain fatty acids, such as butyrate. Butyrate is actually the preferred fuel for the colon cells. Butyrate also helps stabilize your blood sugars, increase energy, and helps improve insulin resistance.  Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods.
