It’s possible that the COVID-19 mortality rate may be slightly less than what they’ve been telling you.  Two recent studies focused on measuring antibodies to the virus. The purpose was to find out the true infection rate.  University of Southern California   • 863 people were tested  • 4.1% of the group had antibodies to the virus  Stanford University   • 3300 people were tested   • 2.4 - 4.2% of the group had antibodies to the virus  The infection rate was thought to be 7994 when in actuality, it was between 220,000 and 442,000. Today we’re going to talk about an interesting case study that was done by a Brazilian doctor working with a patient who had myasthenia gravis. Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease. An autoimmune disease is where you have what they call autoantibodies that are against your own tissues. This particular autoimmune disease attacks the connection between your nerves and your muscles. This creates a lot of muscle problems.  One of the treatments commonly used for this condition is steroids. But, unfortunately, there are a lot of side effects when you take steroids.  This doctor used between 80,000 and 120,000 IUs of vitamin D3 and was able to put this patient’s symptoms in remission.  Vitamin D is hormone-like and acts as a steroid without the side-effects. It also supports the T regulatory cells, which is a part of the immune system that helps prevent autoimmune diseases.  There is a huge connection with a lot of autoimmune diseases and vitamin D deficiency. But, one of the concerns people have with taking high doses of vitamin D is a condition called hypercalcemia. This is high calcium in the blood, which could potentially lead to kidney stones. To lessen this risk, the doctor told the patient to omit calcium from the diet. But, the definition of serious that we’re focusing on here refers to looming danger or grave danger. Basically, you’re afraid.  The problem is that being in a state of fear can greatly affect your immune system. It can increase cortisol and adrenaline, making you more susceptible to disease.  It is vital, despite what’s happening in your environment, to try to maintain an attitude of ease (being less serious). Studies on COVID-19 and temperature: Study: High temperature and high humidity could significantly reduce the transmission of COVID-19. For every increase in 1 degree Celsius and increase in 1% humidity, there’s a decrease by R (the infection rate) by .0383 and .0224. Study: There are greater infections in the northern hemisphere versus the lower hemisphere. This may have to do with distance from the sun and how much vitamin D people are able to get.  Study: Showed an inverse relationship between humidity, temperature, and COVID-19 infections.  Certain viruses are seasonal and peak in the winter because they’re more stable in cold temperatures. During the winter months, people also tend to have higher levels of cortisol, which weakens the immune system.  During the winter months, you’re also going to get less vitamin D, which can weaken the immune system. There are even more benefits of sunlight that go beyond vitamin D and temperature, that you’re missing out on in the winter months.  If there are viruses that are peaking in the winter months, it’s important to keep your immune system strong during this time. In this podcast, I want to talk to you about the ketogenic diet, intermittent fasting, your thyroid, and your hair. Some people who go on an intermittent fasting and keto plan notice hair loss. Some people also feel cold and have an enlarged thyroid. There is a way to do keto correctly, so you don’t have hair loss and a thyroid problem.  Vitamin A activates thyroid receptors. The pituitary sends a hormone down to the thyroid that controls it. The hormone is called thyroid-stimulating hormone, or TSH. It changes the size of the thyroid and the production of hormones, like T4. Low levels of vitamin A can inhibit the thyroid receptors of TSH. In turn, your pituitary produces more and more TSH to try to force the thyroid to work.  When this situation happens, it can cause the thyroid to enlarge. In turn, this can make you cold and contribute to hair loss.  Vitamin A comes from: • Liver • Eggs • Butter • Fish oil • Greens If you don’t consume enough of these foods, you could be low in vitamin A.  The other causes of low vitamin A could be: • Fatty or inflamed liver • Low gallbladder bile or no gallbladder • Gastric bypass • SIBO Low levels of zinc is another very common problem that causes thyroid issues. In this podcast, we’re going to talk about what vitamin D can do for the cytokine storm.  A cytokine storm is basically what’s really killing the majority of people who die from COVID-19. But, it’s only deadly if the person’s immune system is malfunctioning.  There is a really interesting study that compared the two countries with the highest mortality rates from COVID-19 to the countries with the lowest mortality rates from COVID-19. They looked at their vitamin D levels. They found a correlation between the higher mortality rates and low vitamin D. Not only that; they found a strong correlation between vitamin D and cytokine storm. People that had the most vitamin D did not have the cytokine storm.  Vitamin D is an immune modulator. It controls the amount of inflammation within the immune system. A cytokine is a signaling protein that can:  • Increase the number of white blood cells  • Cause inflammation  • Suppress inflammation  • Stimulate angiogenesis (the growth of new blood vessels) Just like how your immune system has strategies to fight off pathogens, pathogens have strategies to survive and counter attacks.  During a cytokine storm, there is a hyperinflammatory reaction going on that creates a lot of damage in the body.  Vitamin D may be able to help suppress cytokines. Today we’re going to talk about antibodies and how you can create your own immunity through your own antibodies.  You have this amazing and powerful internal defense mechanism, or immunity, that helps neutralize enemies. There are two parts of the immune system: The innate— You are born with this. It doesn’t need any training. It has a general defense mechanism for day to day activity. When things get too intense, they signal the acquired immune system to get help.  The acquired or adaptive— This is the back-up force. The acquired has very specific actions to help protect you. This part of the immune system is acquired or adapted over time. It learns from experience. If it’s not first exposed to a virus, it won’t learn anything.  Hypothetically, vaccines are supposed to create artificial immunity. But, your own body can even create immunity to pathogens. It all occurs mainly from the B cells, which are a part of the acquired immune system. B cells have receptors that can reach out and grab pathogens. These are called antibodies. Antibodies neutralize the enemy (a pathogen).  A virus becomes dangerous when it gets inside of the cell. If you recover from a virus, the next time you’re exposed to this virus, you’ll be immune to it. They make up less than 1% of the entire population of Stockholm. The truth is, everyone acquires some degree of damage in their brain as they age. This has to do with a lack of fuel in your neurons.  In one study, it was shown that the average person loses about 30% of their brain cells as they reach old age. This happens very gradually over time. The early signs of dementia can come on slowly—you might start forgetting where you put your keys or forget someone’s name.  When your neurons are starving of fuel, you will notice: • Loss of memory • Lack of clarity • Loss of focus and poor attention span This all comes from consuming a high carbohydrate diet. Over time, carbs cause insulin resistance, and glucose cannot supply the brain cells with energy.  Neurons actually prefer a different type of fuel: ketones. Today we’re going to talk about why you might have high blood sugar in the morning even though you’ve had zero sugar. You might even have your first meal and notice that your blood sugar levels actually go down. What’s up with that? Your liver is actually what’s making the sugar. The name for this is called gluconeogenesis. The liver is making new sugar out of protein, ketones, or fat.  Everyone has a little bit of this going on. To an extent, this is a normal reaction due to hormone fluctuations. To a very small degree, you’ll have blood sugar fluctuations throughout the night and throughout the day. But, when you have too much of this, it’s called the dawn phenomenon.  The dawn phenomenon is a situation where you wake up, and your blood sugars are too high. This is likely due to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance makes the dawn phenomenon a lot worse.  All of this goes back to insulin, which stores fat, and is supposed to keep gluconeogenesis from happening. When you have insulin resistance, in certain parts of your body, you don’t have enough insulin. But, in other parts of the body, you have too much insulin.  A normal blood sugar level is about 80. This would mean you have about 1 level teaspoon of sugar in all of your blood or 5 grams. For every 10 points that your blood sugar goes up, that’s an increase of 1/2 gram. If your blood sugar is 120 in the morning, this means you have an extra 2 grams of sugar in all of your blood. This is not an outrageous amount that will cause a lot of problems.  What you can do if you have high blood sugar in the morning: 1. Give it time 2. Take things to speed up the process (potassium, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin B12) 3. Today we’re going to talk about autoimmune conditions and what causes autoimmune conditions?  An autoimmune condition is a situation where your body has created immune cells that are attacking itself.  This creates inflammation, and the inflammation creates a lot of collateral damage. It’s all of the free radicals that end up actually destroying the tissue.  The immune cells that are attacking itself are called autoantibodies. You can have these autoantibodies to pretty much any tissue in the body.  What autoimmune conditions boil down to is one cell called the Th17 cell becoming overactive. Excessive amounts of this cell are responsible for autoimmune conditions.  In your immune system, you have a lot of different T cells. The T stands for thymus. Typically T helper cells do things like recruiting help to fight infection and generating weaponry. It’s the main controller in the battle against infections.  One of the functions of these cells is to maintain the intestinal barrier. This is the barrier that helps keep out viruses and pathogens. If there’s a break in the wall and harmful bacteria get in, they can invade the inside of the body, causing an immune attack. Now, your body is going to start creating antibodies against these cells. If those cells are pathogens, this is a good thing. But, what if those cells are your own cells? This, of course, wouldn’t be good.  Another function of Th17 cells is making sure that the body doesn’t destroy its own tissue. This cell could help prevent autoimmune conditions.  The Th17 cells also work with the T regulatory cells, which have an even greater function of preventing autoimmune diseases. It may also help suppress autoimmune diseases and hyperinflammatory conditions. Today let’s talk about Saudi Arabia and vitamin D.  There was a meta-analysis between 2008 and 2015 that demonstrated that 63.5% of the population had a vitamin D deficiency. On top of that, 19.9% of the population had vitamin D insufficiency (a subclinical vitamin D deficiency). Together, this is 83.4% of the population that had a problem with vitamin D.  Saudi Arabia is also:  • 7th in the world for the rate of getting type 2 diabetes  • 4th in the world for the rate of getting type 1 diabetes 84% of the type of 1 diabetes cases in children showed a vitamin D deficiency. So, why is this such problem in Saudi Arabia? Well, there is traditional clothing typically worn in Saudi Arabia, that blocks the sun. But, there are other factors as well. Only 10% of the vitamin D you get comes from your diet. It’s almost impossible to get all of the vitamin D you need from your diet.  Vitamin D deficiency symptoms:  • Fatigue   • Depression  • Diabetes  • Inflammation  • Aches   • High blood pressure   • Weak immunity  It may be beneficial, especially for those in Saudi Arabia, to start taking vitamin D supplements. If you do take vitamin D supplements, you may also want to take vitamin K2. Now, it’s vital to do these things to help restore brain function and prevent more damage.  When you have a stroke, it causes something called hypoxia. This is a situation where you have low oxygen in the brain and damaged brain tissue. The brain needs a lot of oxygen. Although the brain only makes up 2% of body tissue, it uses 20% of your oxygen. What you need to do is focus on increasing oxygen in the brain. To restore oxygen to the brain after a stroke, do these 7 things:  1. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy - This forces pure oxygen into the body. I recommend doing this right away.  2. Ketones - A keto diet and intermittent fasting will increase ketones and give your brain more oxygen.  3. DHA - This is an Omega-3 fatty acid that can help improve a damaged brain.  4.
