There is a lot going on in the Permaculture world, even some in fighting, I always love the way Geoff stays above this type of thing but I do give him the opportunity to talk about what qualifies one to “teach permaculture” and what a PDC is really supposed to be about today.  We then turn to some other topics such as, making a living with permaculture, plant propagation, the need for research and documentation and more. To me Geoff is the most gifted teacher I know in the world of Permaculture so it is great to have him on air today.   Last year I competed his online PDC, many asked why I would do so, given I already had a PDC certification. The answer is simple.  While I have worked with great instructors and been to seminars and classes with people like Sepp Holzer and my good friends Ben Falk and Paul Wheaton and read and studied the work of Toby Hemingway and Alan Savory, in the end it is Geoff’s work that guides most of what I do.  I consider myself his perpetual student so it is a great honor to have him on the show once again. TweetToday’s show may not sound very “survivaly” but frankly one of the biggest common disasters is actually some sort of personal financial failure.  Many times this eventually is traced back to a business failing.  Your boss has his business decline and cuts your salary or lays you off.  Or your own business flounders and you fail to earn enough money. Today we discuss using permaculture principles to analyze a business and not really a “permacutlure business” I mean any business from software, to social media to selling tires.  Design is design and it really is that simple. Another reason you may want to listen to this show is that I believe the process I will lay out today could easily be formalized into a more refined state and actually used as a consultancy tool.  The right person could take this model and simply make a living as a business consultant with it.  Lastly, one of my main tenets for modern survival is to set up your own business if you can, from one man perorations to the fortune 100, the process I lay out today will transform how you view business. TweetToday is a two part episode.  We begin with a mini segment from me about PermaEthos and the new farm model.  All seems well until we look at investor “protections” and how that translates into tax consequences and eats into initial operation budgets. Today in only about 15 minutes I will do two things.  First, I will tell you exactly how anti business this nation really is, how screwed up people really are and how completely off base business in America has become.  Second after defining the problem I think I will honestly blow you away with how we can use their own rules against them and still move forward, totally open with what we are doing and totally legal to boot. Lisa Haywood is an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio. Her practice began as a personal injury (PI) attorney.  Yes, an ambulance chaser, but don’t hold that against her. PI gave her a great foundation in risk analysis and that is where she discovered “planning”, is not a matter of if something happens it was when. Lisa has helped people recover from disaster from one of the more probable disasters that could happen to you … a car accident. She would resolve their case and hand them their settlement check, but she felt that was not enough.  She  wanted to teach her client’s from that point how to better prepare themselves to weather the storm if they got in another accident down the road. Her colleagues said she was crazy for that because it was essentially cutting off “repeat business”. To many that seemed like such a backwards thought process yet Lisa knew it was a better way to do business.  So, she began offering to do a global risk analysis of her client’s lives to determine where the potential exposure was so they could plug the holes. TweetVery seldom do real profound words come to me in a dream, last night though that happened.  The words were there but jumbled and as I sat in a half awake fog I knew they were important.  Don’t get me wrong, important to me, I don’t think I am the first to day them.  It was about running businesses in an open source model.  No patents save for an open source protection to prevent others from claiming sole ownership of it. The words were clunky, something like, “cost greater then gain” and something like, “resources  used objective”.  I actually heard these words as I woke up and had a WTF moment at that point.  I sat still and formed the words in my mind, this is what I ended up with. Running  a business in an open source model puts 100% of the businesses efforts into delivering what it promises and none into hiding how they do it.  The cost of operations is massively lower and the entire open source model is the greatest marketing platform anyone could ask for. It has been a long time since I discussed founding or running a business on TSP.  So today we are going to do that.  If you don’t think understanding business is a survival topic, let me ask you how you pay for all the needs you nave in your life.
