Episode-1345- Fishing the Surf and Piers | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:29:27

TweetA Black Tip Shark – One of the Surf’s Many Surprises For Dorothy the beach is a place to walk, pick up shells and sit around and do nothing.  While I enjoy much of that, especially with a Jimmy Buffet approved drink in hand, I also love to fish the shore.  There is an excitement about shore and pier and brackish water fishing that to me just doesn’t exist in a lake or a river.  Do a bit of research on any lake or river (fresh water river) and likely there are 6-12 fish if that that are common.  When you look at fish you are likely to catch the number is likely to be closer to 6 than 12. Now let me remind you of what I caught just in species on the Sanibel island coast, only about 5 of the 10 days I was there was the surf ideal for fishing by the way. Here is a list of the species I caught while on vacation in the Sanibel Island Surf… Spanish Mackerel Permit Snook Ladyfish Whiting Gafftop Sail Catfish Hard Head Catfish Jack Cravalle Blue Runner Speckled Sea Trout That is 10 species and I am leaving out some of the little odd bait fish stuff that also managed to get hooked like Pig and Pin fish.  So that alone is a dozen.  We took a quick trip down to the pier as well, we just missed a guy landing a black tip shark and we saw another guy catch a nice nurse shark.  When the surf was clear at one point I found myself surrounded by about a thousand or more (no exaggeration) cow nose rays.  Though I managed to intentionally not catch any. I have fished the Texas coast many times and while not quite the diversity of Florida’s coast it is also a great deal of fun.  I have often caught red fish, sea trout, whiting, sand trout, croaker, sail cats, hard heads and a lot of other stuff.  I have also managed to catch a few small black tip sharks down there.  I even remember one day when the surf was really clear and I was standing about waste deep on the second sand bar and several of us watched a bull shark that was at least 8 feet cruise by just 10 yards in front of us, while we all backed slowly onto the bars shallower area, no one panicked and the fishing continued. Join Me Today To Discuss… My basic gear, not much different from lake fishing Medium action spinning rod Snap swivels 10-14 pound premium mono Bait casting sinkers Bait holder hooks #2 – #4/0 generally snelled Cut bait (shrimp, cut whiting, squid, etc) Stepping gear up for bigger fish Medium Heavy to Heavy Action rod and reel Steel leaders Large circle or khale hooks Simply put, bigger bait Paddle boards, surf boards, etc. – not necessary but functional The basics of surf fishing – easy as it gets Guts and bars are your friend, if they are there Tides, high is best but it is not that simple Surf reports, calm water equals better fishing Seasonality – what is there and when Piers – sometimes the only valid option but crowded When wading shuffle – sting rays! Beyond Cut Baits Whitebait, Theadthins, Pinfish, etc. Cast nets Sand Fleas and Small Crabs The DOA shrimp – probably one of the best artificial Live Shrimp A bit on brackish rivers, bays, etc. There is a lot in common, especially on piers Better for crabbing, fun at low tide Fish tend to come in “runs” Boats are great but that is another show In some areas wading can be dangerous – Alligators! Safety and Comfort Gear Needle nose and hemostats – consider a glove Basic first aid kit – have aloe gel on hand Jelly Fish Sting Treatment – Link Good knifes and a cleaning board – if keeping fish Really good cooler, lots of ice Water, water, water, water and water Sun Block – water really fries you Bait buckets for live bait, bait containers (avoid the chomp) Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 1345 Join Our Forum 13Skills.com Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Gear PermaEthos.com JM Bullion – (sponsor of the day) Harvest Eating – (sponsor of the day) [...]

Episode-1343- 11 Medicinal Herbs that are Also Perennial | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:44:47

TweetComfrey – A Proven Medicinal Herb, With a Undeserved Bad Reputation. After two days of fishing shows I decided to change things up a bit with a show on medicinal herbs.  I have done a lot on this in the past, mostly sticking to very safe herbs that are both medicinal and culinary.  The reason being is I am NOT a master herbalist, period.  I am also not a Doctor or even a Nurse, I am not qualified to give medical advice and that is a big time disclaimer today. Some of the stuff I will cover today can be toxic if used the wrong way or it may have bad interaction with other herbs or medications.  Some of it should not be used during pregnancy, etc.  I will also state today that it is not only impossible for me to mention all possible negative side effects but I am also not qualified to do so. The use of any herb on this podcast is done so at your own risk and should only be done with proper research and consultation with a qualified professional. Now with all that, you may wonder why I have abandoned sticking to herbs that are very safe and pose little to no risks even if eaten like candy.  Well, the reality is we may need these herbs in a grid down scenario.  A Doctor, Herbalist or other professional may know how to extract and herb but can’t do it if they don’t have it.  Additionally some are good cash crops to sell to herbal product makers.  Some like Black Cohosh are actually endangered due to over harvesting in the wild. Some can be safely used with proper research and I leave that choice up to you.  Some are great niche plants in your overall systems and attract predators and pollinators.  Comfrey for instance is  the preferred plant above all others for spiders to overwinter in.  Some are also great dynamic accumulators, etc.  Additionally given the option many species of animals including livestock will eat a bit of a so called, “toxic plant” when their internal intelligence tells them to. Frankly there are many ornamental plants such as Oleander that are highly toxic if consumed but people plant it all over, you don’t see children or pets dying form eating it.  So I don’t feel we should fear using a plant that MIGHT be dangerous IF used IMPROPERLY. One final note though for those with highly edible landscapes.  It is important (ALWAYS) to tell visitors that not everything is edible.  Some people are morons, they think if most things can be eaten, all things can.  So make sure you tell people that visit your property not to eat anything unless they know exactly what it is.  I can just see some tool, devouring foxglove or destroying angel mushrooms and ending up dead due to such foolish behavior.  Episode-1342- Fishing Rivers and Streams | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:41:14

TweetPart of the Susquehanna I Fished Often in my Teens. If I had a blue sky budget I would live on a small to mid sized river, that should tell you how I feel about this subject.  Of all types of fishing I love fishing moving fresh water the best.  Rivers come in many sizes.  I grew up fishing the St. John’s River in Jacksonville Florida.  While I have many fond memories of it, that is not the type of river I most enjoy fishing.  The St. Johns where I fished it was over a mile wide, the water was brackish, tides could easily drown a swimmer, etc.  Rivers like that I see more akin to bays and pier and surf fishing. In 1985 when I was just hitting my teens we moved from Jacksonville, Florida to Pottsville, Pennsylvania.  Soon I wash fishing trout streams from little trickles you could walk across in 2-4 steps all the way up to the mighty Susquehanna north of Harrisburg. Now the Susquehanna where we fished it was wide, like the St. John’s almost a mile wide but in some areas you could almost walk across it!  By wading you could find all sorts of formations, it was almost like finding mini creeks in the rivers.  This is the type of river and stream fishing I will be talking about today.  Bodies of water you can fish from shore, wading or with small boats.  Water that you can “read” and actually understand what going on below the surface by how the water moves. Join Me Today to Discuss… River, steam, brook, creek, crick, call it what you want it is all fun Choosing your gear for moving water Learning to “read” water Deep pools Edies Fast moving deep water Ledges Cut outs and deep banks There is a lot more, you learn to just see it Some of my favorite species to fish moving water for and how I do it Trout of any and all kind Small Mouth Bass – my favorite Catfish Fresh Water Drum – yes I am serious White Bass – like a micro salmon run How to find spots and access points Float fishing with canoes, how to reach spots others never go to Small boats on slow deep swamp like rivers Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 1338 Join Our Forum 13Skills.com Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Gear PermaEthos.com Fortress Defense Consultants – (sponsor of the day) The Berkey Guy – (sponsor of the day) Mother Earth Products – (MSB Discount Vendor of the Day) Magic Worm Food The Type of Worm Cooler I was Talking About Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1341- The Basics of Fishing Gear | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:50:09

TweetA Small Surf Caught Pompano that became Sashimi While at Sanibel Island I did a LOT of fishing.  Had a blast as the surf was pretty good to me for the first half of the trip.  About mid way into it, the ocean just got really rough and turbid and it really wasn’t worth the effort at that point. I always enjoy fishing and frankly the last year was so full of work not much of it got done.  I enjoy fishing in fresh and salt water, in bays, estuaries, the surf, rivers, streams, creeks, hell I would fish a puddle if I thought there was a fish in it. Surf fishing is hard to beat though, just for pure variety and the “never know what you will catch next” factor.  Over the years I have both caught and watched others catch some really interesting stuff just surf fishing the guts and bars on the beaches. Here is a list of the species I caught while on vacation in the Sanibel Island Surf… Spanish Mackerel Permit Snook Ladyfish Whiting Gafftop Sail Catfish Hard Head Catfish Jack Cravalle Blue Runner Speckled Sea Trout It was an absolute blast.  As always though when I am in a place where fishing is popular I see a ton of other fishermen.  Some are really switched on, some are specialists, like the guys fly casting to snook.  But there are always some who are well, just not quite “getting it”. From rods that are too heavy to giant weights and hooks or God knows what else, you see a lot of things that just don’t work when you go fishing where others are fishing too.  This got me thinking, why not do a TSP fishing series. So we are going to start that today, here is the plan for all the shows in this series… Episode One -The basics of gear, rods, hooks, weights, reels, etc. (Today) Episode Two – Fishing rivers and streams Episode Three – Fishing the surf and bays and piers, etc. Episode Four – Lakes Episode Five – All about boats and hiring guides Episode Six – “Unconventional Methods” – Jugging, Trot Lines, Bank Lines, etc. If there is anything else you would want added to that list, let me know.  I am not going to focus much of artificals today but will pepper thoughts on them into most of the episodes as the situations discussed demand. For Today this is What We Will Cover Rods and reels (bait casting, spinning, fly, cane, etc) Types of fishing line, mono, braided, fluoro Hooks, bait holder, khale, circle, long shank (Aberdeen and Siwash), treble Weights, split shots, casting, slip, rubber core and more Nets and gaffs Bait containers, stringers, coolers, etc Floats, round, stick, slip, fly bubbles, etc. Clippers, pliers, first aid stuff, hand towel, gloves, etc. Some basic tips that always apply Fish relate to structure and edges Use the lightest gear that is suitable If you are getting no action, move, change baits, etc. don’t just wait Talk to others, read “fishing reports” If you are going to fish often in one place keep notes Target species or “go for anything” based on the situation Learn “feel”, “hook set” and “play” (find easy action) Have fun, don’t overdue it Resources for today’s show… Join the MSB The Year 1341 Join Our Forum 13Skills.com Join Our Forum TSP Gear PermaEthos.com BrinkOfFreedom.net Bulk Ammo – (sponsor of the day) Ready Made Resources – (sponsor of the day) Raw Fish at the Beach Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1329- Thoughts on Remote Land, BOLs, etc. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:20:05

TweetA Pre Fab Mini Cabin at a BOL A few of you guys have asked for a few shows that get a bit away from the homesteading/permaculture stuff and a bit deeper into some of the other more typical “survival topics” we have covered before.  Today we do the first of a few shows I have planned to answer that need. Today we discuss remote land/home ownership and the unique advantages and challenges it represents.  Far to many see a BOL solely as a place for when the shit has really hit the fan, like TEOTWAWKI level stuff.  The reality is a BOL serves a variety of functions. In our case we haven’t had a BOL since 2011 when we moved to Arkansas to a place that had been serving as such for about 6 years at that time.  After a shot stint up there of about two years, it was clear my wife’s heart was in Texas.  We decided to sell the remote property and use the gains to improve our new homestead in Texas. Once again now I find myself scouring places like LandsOfTexas.com, LandWatch.com and UnitedCountry.com looking for that perfect get away property.  This time my goals are a bit different, yours may be more like my first property, the one I am looking for now or something entirely different.  The purpose of today’s show is to help you find the right property for your needs.  Further to decide if having such a property is even right for you at all. Join Me Today to Discuss… Why would you want a remote property Fall back location Recreation Investment What I think makes a property desirable Water Access Structure Distance Grid Near a Small Town Secure Good Neighbors No Restrictions Questions to ask yourself Are there other things I really should do first Can I really afford it How often will I really use it What do I most want out of it Thoughts on “Teaming Up” It can work, everyone just needs to be clear going in Look for people with common goals and values Define use and define guests very clearly Decide between common ownership and defined areas going in I would likely only do this if all parties could pay cash going in There are many advantages to teaming up Final thoughts on BOLs Resources for today’s show… Join the MSB The Year 1329 Join Our Forum 13Skills.com Join Our Forum TSP Gear PermaEthos.com BrinkOfFreedom.net JM Bullion – (sponsor of the day) Fortress Defense Consultants– (sponsor of the day) The Soil Cube – (Discount Vendor of the Day) Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1327- Jen Mendez on Permaculture Based Childrens Education | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:16

TweetJen Mendez of PermieKids.com Jen Mendez is a wife, mother, permaculture enthusiast and student, lifelong learner, urban homesteader, and professionally trained, successful educator gone rogue. Her experiences living and working around the world as an active duty military member led to an understanding  of the need for and the impact of education on the future of our world. After her service, she completed a Masters in International Education with a focus on early childhood and elementary education and has been an educator ever since. Between her time as a classroom teacher and now as a homeschooling parent, she has fused her passion for educating and her enthusiasm for permaculture into an ethical, scientific design process to create a comprehensive, project-based inquiry education that empowers in learning and life. The goal is to help children become active, solutions-based thinkers and do-ers. She has created an approach to education that the children, parents, grandparents, teachers, and other mentors can use to collaborate and design an education that meets the needs, goals, and passions of each individual children. Moreover, she is using her knowledge and connections within the educational community to access, integrate, and re-configure resources that already exist so that, in the words of Bill Mollison (Permaculture Designers’ Manual, p.9), “It arranges what was already there in a different way, so that it works to conserve energy or to generate more energy than it consumes.” The idea is that as a community, we can use this commonsense, ethical design system and resources to create an education that empowers in learning and life.  Episode-1325- Taking the TSP Homestead Forward in 2014 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:27

TweetCharlie and Ralph Nap after a Long Day on the Homestead Time for a simple old school style TSP that is basically a chat with Jack.  Today we take a look a what 2014 has in store for life at the TSP homestead.  The first year here was mostly an infrastructure establishment phase.  We installed swales and hugul beds.  We also built facilities for our livestock, systems to move they though the land, etc.  We installed garden ponds and many other systems. The entire first year of establishment is actually available in a 90 minute video we filmed that you can find here.  The key is the first year was like building the roads and bridges, 2014 is going to be more like when the houses, buildings and shops go in, metaphorically of course. This year is going to be awesome, Josiah will be off building the flagship PermaEthos farm which will require at least one trip by me up there for a major earthworks course and installation.  Other than that though Dorothy and I will be back to it just being the two of us and frankly even though we love Joe like family we are looking forward to it. We are moving into a new phase, one of tweaking, edge expansion and management.  Shifting from changing the landscape to working with it.  Dorothy is even considering starting a small homestead business or businesses of her own. Join Me Today As We Discuss… Once we plant 300 plus trees this week then what Plans for more mobile chicken fencing and a mobile coops Charly’s progress and the BS that a dog that kills a chicken must be beaten, etc. The geese “herd” is being expanded Ducks into the system A new “pond” near the big hen house how it will add to our system A new crop in the garden ponds, Chinese water chestnut This year we go big on perennial medicinal herbs Bees are coming, I have no idea what to do with them but I will figure it out Dorothy is considering an egg business, perhaps a plant business too Pasture restoration 2.0, one horse equals a LOT of poop and hay Final decision on the west pasture has yet to be made Plans for our future abundance Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 1325 Join Our Forum 13Skills.com Walking To Freedom TSP Gear PermaEthos.com Knife Kits – (sponsor of the day) Back Woods Home Magazine – (sponsor of the day) Primal Power Method – (MSB Discounter of the day) Source of Water Chestnut Croms Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon. Steven Harris is a consultant and expert in the field of energy. He is the founder and CEO of Knowledge Publications, the largest energy only publishing company in the USA.
