Episode-1920- Camping for Becoming More Prepared in Life | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:29:08

TweetI have found that many make camping over complicated, attempting to bring “all the comforts of home” with them.  To me this sort of defeats the point.  What you should focus on with camping is comfort.  By this I mean, sleeping comfort, ability to get clean, stay dry, not be too hot or too cold.  Much of this is more about planning than gear, though some gear is very helpful in this endeavor. Let me say I am also a big fan of “car camping” especially if children or larger groups are involved.  This does let you take more gear but it also allows for the ability to get something if you forgot it without too much trouble. Join Me Today to Discuss… Why the hell do people go camping anyway It reconnects us to our true selves It is fun, well it certainly can be It disconnects us from “the modern world” It blends well with other activities (fishing, hiking, etc.) Why people tend to not go camping Time limitations Reluctant family members Finding a good location Cost of gear and shelter Lack of knowledge My rules for an enjoyable camping experience that you will want to do again Have good sleeping gear, comfort, comfort, comfort Have a good shelter for your season Plan a few activities, fishing, hiking, etc. Pick a location where you can hike Ensure water access is available Make the food great Find a place were you can have a campfire, and enjoy campfire time What you learn by camping that applies to prepping How to cook without the grid How to be comfortable without a house How to acquire food from nature How to do without, or what you will need so you don’t have to That all the shit you think is important, largely isn’t Rules for keeping kids happy on camping trips Pick the right time of year Make individual activities brief unless they are really into it Take away the cell phones, game boys, etc. yes really Make the first trips shorter trips Don’t get your personal expectations set too high about things My personal thoughts on gear (not an essential or complete list) Good sleeping pad, cot or hammock camping Seasonally appropriate bedding/sleeping bag A good cook stove – I love this one Dutch oven and camp fire cooking gear A quality tent, no one ever says, there is too much room in here A good flash light and a good head lamp or cap light, LED lanterns Toilet paper, um a few extra rolls Eating utensils – consider paper plates, plastic forks Rain gear – I like Frog Togs Dish washing supplies Water containers for a washing station – if needed Insect repellent Fire making supplies, (I have no problem with a lighter and fluid) First aid kit Cordage Tables and chairs Shade canopy Final Thoughts Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 1920 Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Gear PermaEthos.com TspAz.com – Support TSP When You Shop Amazon The Granddaddy’s Gun Club Santa Claus is Coming to Town – Bruce Springsteen Sponsors of the Day Self Reliance Magazine Western Botanicals T & T Fabrications Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1919- Toby Hemenway on Liberation Permaculture | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:05:18

TweetUpdate – I just learned that Toby passed away this morning.  I had already complete today’s show when I found out.  So I will leave it as it is.  Today most of the show is from an interview I originally did with Toby on April 14th, 2015.  I was going to make it a rewind but under the circumstances chose to make it a new episode with all segments. Quite a long time ago I talked to my friend Toby about working with PermaEthos, it resulted in the course we had him teach on small scale Permaculture called, Creating Gaia’s Garden.  I am sad to say but those of you that took that course may be the last formal students Toby will ever teach. You see in those discussions I learned he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and his prognosis was grim.  Along the way he tried some alternative treatment that cause improvement enough to try conventional therapy.  During this time he continued his work and taught our course. But we knew that soon after it ended he was really struggling, then yesterday I got an email from Toby’s web guy, Kane Jamison, that said, In October of 2015, Toby was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He completed a course of chemotherapy at UCSF in San Francisco, but a CAT scan taken a couple months later indicated that the cancer had spread to his liver. He began a second course of chemotherapy in October 2016, which was interrupted when he developed septic shock in November. Since then, additional scans show that the cancer has continued to spread in his liver. Toby signed up for home hospice on December 16, 2016. Toby is no longer able to work, and his wife, Kiel, is his full-time caregiver. We are asking for support to help us meet expenses for living and caregiving. We want to extend our deepest gratitude for all those who have already offered their prayers, time, food, and friendship. Thank you all. And please know that no offering is too small, and prayers and good wishes are so appreciated. We have set up a page at YouCaring requesting donations and messages of support. You can click the link below to donate: I first went to the page and made a donation and then shared it on facebook, and many others did as well.  At that time about 800 dollars had been donated, today we are now up to about 30,000 dollars. Folks hospice care generally means you have less than 6 months to live, some do come out of it, but most do not.  And on top of that pancreatic and liver cancers have very low survival rates, the two together are even worse.   So I and many others now face a reality that one of the best men to ever walk among us, may soon not be with us any longer. So I have decided to do several things, today I will rebroadcast his interview on Liberation Permaculture, and during the break his show on The Permaculture City will be an episode of rewind. I am asking all of you to consider donating to his fundraiser so that he can know that his wife will be okay once he is gone.  I can tell you that if I were facing what he was, the one thing I would worry about most is my wife. Here are the original show notes from the interview that will make up most of this show. Toby Hemenway – Author – Teacher – Anarchist Toby Hemenway is the author of Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture, which was awarded the Nautilus Gold Medal in 2011, was named by the Washington Post as one of the ten best gardening books of 2010, and for the last eight years has been the best-selling permaculture book in the world. Toby has been an adjunct professor at Portland State University, Scholar-in-Residence at Pacific University, and has taught over sixty 72-hour permaculture design courses. He has presented lectures and workshops at major sustainability conferences such as Bioneers, SolFest, and EcoFarm, and at Duke University, Tufts University, University of Minnesota, University of Delaware and many other educational venues. His writing has appeared in magazines such as Natural Home, Who[...]

Episode-1915- Phil Williams on Propaganda, Patriotism and Universal Morality | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:18:59

TweetPhil M. Williams is an author, permaculture consultant, and activist for a stateless society. He is the author of seven books with permaculture and anarchist themes: Farmer Phil’s Permaculture, Fire the Landscaper, Against the Grain, Stone Lake, Cesspool, Initiation, and The Propaganda Project. In 2008, after a decade as a landscape contractor, Phil sold his business and moved from the McMansion filled suburbs of Northern Virginia to rural Pennsylvania. He spent a couple of years as a mediocre gardener, before finding permaculture. A few years later, and two completed PDC’s, he became a permaculture consultant. In addition to consulting, he’s spent the past six years developing his six-acre hillside into a permaculture site. His permaculture work can be found at FoodProduction101.com. Phil is an accidental author. He had been writing in the winter for many years—with no intention of publishing. With the support of his wife, he published his first book, Fire the Landscaper in 2015. With his permaculture site mostly complete, more of his time is now spent writing. He believes that entertainment is biased in favor of the state. Books, movies, and television often feature government employees as heroes, and anti-government people as the antagonists. With his books, he endeavors to counteract this bias, and show the state as it is. His new releases can be read for free at PhilWBooks.com.  Episode-1914- The Challenge of Getting Others on Board with Prepping | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:14:38

Tweet Long ago, in fact all the way back in Oct. 8th 2008 I did an episode called Getting Your Spouse On Board with Emergency Survival Planning.  I have been told over the years that it has been very helpful to many about getting spouses (both male and female) on board, so it has served its purpose well. Recently I have heard from quite a few people dealing with this issue and decided it was time to revisit the subject, I mean it has been 8 years!  I prep today I listened to that show and realized it was very much geared with helping the on board partner talk to the reluctant one. Today I want to take a slightly different approach and talk directly to the reluctant members of families with one person advocating for more preparedness.  I originally didn’t do this because I felt that the number of reluctant folks who would listen would be low.  While that is still a concern I thought it was worth this approach. I am also not doing this show today specifically directed at spouses but really to anyone.  This is simply a “why we prep” show but it will address things like reluctant spouses or other family members as well. Join Me Today to Discuss… Why people resist the concept of preparedness The “what could really happen” attitude Because it is uncomfortable to accept that there are dangers Because they think prepping is like the nonsense on TV Because learning and growth can be uncomfortable Fear of what you might have to give up or do without Fear your partner is going to go bat shit crazy with this stuff What basic preparedness is really all about First a few of the results of this show and community Taking care of your family and those you love Improving the quality of your life today Responsible money management, saving and investing Improving knowledge and skills Why women make great preppers when they give it a shot It is motherly to insure the comfort and safety of a family Women tend to focus on “the home” in an inward fashion Women are less distracted by tactical gear, gizmos and guns Women tend to place a high premium on safety Why every family should practice basic preparedness Things do go wrong, in fact they do so often Preparing is easy, regret is difficult When you are prepared you can often help others It will make your life better and your family stronger In the end, this is not about fear, it is about being empowered Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 1914 Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Gear PermaEthos.com TspAz.com – Support TSP When You Shop Amazon The Granddaddy’s Gun Club Get the Commercial Free Version of this Show I Can See Clearly Now – Johnny Nash Sponsors of the Day Safecastle Royal Western Botanicals Deeply Rooted Organics Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-18- TSP Rewind – 14 Life Rules of a Modern Survivalist | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:26:42

TweetToday is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally, Episode-1274 – 14 Life Rules of a Modern Survivalist and originally aired on Jan. 7, 2014.  The notes below are the original notes from that episode. Remember while Rewind Shows are commercial free you can always support our show by Joining the MSB or simply by doing your Amazon.com shopping though TspAz.com I was going to call this show “14 Rules for Being a Modern Survivalist” but I realized that would violate my survival tenet that reads… “Your personal philosophy is more important for you than mine! You are the master of your own life and if you don’t agree with my views, great, define, understand and implement your own. The biggest thing you can do is understand that you are in control of your life and that what you do matters. Those two factors have the greatest impact on individual survival across every demographic you can imagine.” For me that is a deep intrinsic belief not just a tenet of modern survival philosophy.  I may come across as fully convinced in my beliefs and passionate about them to the extreme but that doesn’t mean I wish to impose them on any other person.  So I decided I would simply let you guys know today about 10 of the “rules” that I follow in my life.  Some are very old for me, they have guided me since childhood, others I have gained in recent years on my walk as a modern survivalist… Join Me Today As I Discuss… Ignore politicians, do not however ignore their actions and resulting consequences Truly understand in this order absolute needs, needs, comfort items, luxuries Use anything that works, as long as it is ethical and actually works Solve any problem you see in your head even if you can’t implement the solution Be concerned with the survival of others, not just your own survival Ask what if like a child, answer that question like an adult Be extremely grateful to be alive in this time in history Never violate your personal moral code of ethics Never be led by fear specifically fear of losing something you don’t even have yet Take pride in your phyical abilities but depend on your mental abilities Learn from everything you do, the good, the bad and the failures Never accept that things are simply just the way they are Never feel you have anything coming to you and be grateful for what does Never waste a minute on the past, live in the now and in the tomorrow Resources for today’s show… The Year 1274 Join Our Forum 13Skills.com Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Gear PermaEthos.com My Permaculture Series on Youtube Bill Wilson’s Introduction to Permaculture Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1912- Richard Hastings of East Texas Aquaponics on Stepping Off the Cliff | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:38:40

TweetRichard on a Rough Day! Richard spent 26 years as a software engineer in Austin, TX, before he and his family moved four hours away in the summer of 2015 to an area where they didn’t know anyone. They took their 10’th grade daughter, kicking and screaming, from one of the best Government schools in Texas to a totally unknown (to them) small school in a small community. Since then, they have built a commercial aquaponics system and started to sell into the market. Richard has his PDC from the online Geoff Lawton program in 2014 and has been a listener to the survival podcast since episode 415 and an MSB member for three years. This is one of those rare shows were I was proactive in asking the guest to fill out a guest survey form.  I happened to connect with Richard after publishing one of my videos on youtube.  It was a small water garden system I was doing and he gave me a link to his set up, I was blown away!  He then told me how long he had been listening to TSP and that we were partly why he had made this life change, so I asked him right away to please come share his story.  Today you will hear that story.  It is pretty awesome.  Episode-1911- You Have a Duty to Be Prepared | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:38:08

Tweet Preppers, survivalists, call us what you want but the media makes us all out to be tin hat conspiracy theory obsessed loons.  But what if I told you that being prepared is the only responsible action you can take as an adult in the modern world. If you have a family this should be beyond obvious.   You are responsible for making sure your children are fed, warm and as comfortable as possible in any given circumstances.  If you loved your spouse enough to pledge your life to them, do you owe them the concern for their life long safety and well being as well? What if you are single, no one to worry about?  Well if you are stranded, stuck, hurt, hungry, fill in the blank in a bad time, you are going to end up using resources that others might need. The honest truth is we should all see preparedness as a a basic civic responsibility.  I am so sick of hearing how strong America is. It always comes down to our military.  That is like me claiming I am great at football because my favorite team has won 6 Super Bowls, it is just plain stupid. Our nation is dramatically weak right now.  If we were ever to experience terrorism say the way it was in Northern Ireland during “the troubles”, we would literally shut down.  During super storm Sandy, people in good neighborhoods were dumpster diving for food only 48 hours into the disaster, 48 hours and willing to eat garbage. Join Me Today to Discuss… Yes you have rights, you also have responsibilities How weak is America today A lesson from the shooting of an Ohio firefighter yesterday What would happen if 2 guys just began starting fires here and there What will our nation look like if 20 million people lose their jobs Imagine how much damage could be done with phyical attacks on the grid The Basics of being prepared… It all starts with a specific mindset Emergency fund, 1000 dollars, 30 days, 60 days, 90 days Black Out Kits and Bug Out Kits A pantry at least 30 Days Deep Water storage Basic first aid kits (home and car) and basic training Some form of back up power and lighting Reserve fuel Emergency Heating Options Documentation and Evacuation Folders Security Protocol and Procedures in Place A Health and Sanitation Plan Materials and Tools for Basic and Emergency Repairs Knowledge and Skills – the most important of them all Final Thoughts Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 1911 Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Gear AgriTrue.com TspAz.com – Support TSP When You Shop on Amazon GrandaddysGun.Com Savage 1907 45ACP on Forgotten Weapons Episode 148 Bug Out Planning and Documentation Song of the South – Alabama Sponsors of the Day Harvest Eating TSP Business Directory Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
