Episode-27- TSP Rewind – The Why, What and How of Modern Homesteading | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:16

TweetToday is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally, Episode-1002- The Why, What and How of Modern Homesteading and originally aired on Oct 19, 2012. The notes below are the original notes from that episode. There is an old saying, “what’s old is new again”.  While a fashion minded yuppie may be referring to something like a brief return of the awful concept of bell bottom jeans or some such nonsense, there is a real meaningful component to the statement. The Classic View of “Homestead” is not the Only Option When we are unhappy, when we know something is wrong we try to think back to happier times and make part of what they had part of what we have today.  Why do you think “I Love Lucy”, “Andy Griffith” and even “The Three Stooges” enjoyed a lot of rebirth after 911? Why do you think one network plays “A Christmas Story” for 24 hours strait every Christmas? This is particularly playing out today in the homesteading and back to the land movements.  Something is different this time though, people seem to be doing it for a new reason, while seeking the lessons of the past, they are actually looking to the future.  Rather then nostalgia driving a quaint idea, we seem to have realized, there is “a better way to do things”. Join Me Today as We Discuss….  Episode-1957- The Beginners Guide to Growing Food | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:54

Tweet I have done some really advanced stuff with agriculture and permaculture over the years but I realized it has been a long time since I have done something totally devoted to a true beginner.  The person looking at a patch of ground and a back porch and just wanting a garden and some of their own food on their own table. This does not have to be complicated and it also doesn’t have to be expensive.  Our grand parents and great grand parents didn’t spend a lot of money to grow a garden, they didn’t have design certificates or gadgets either.  Still today we have a lot of options they didn’t, by combining their simple approach and some modern convience we can get off the ground running fast. We can have a great harvest in our first year and lay the ground work for a garden that gets better and better over time.  We can also do things in a way that shortens the learning curve and makes us feel good about what we are doing, rather than demotivated and frustrated as many first year gardeners become. Join Me Today to Discuss… An example of why the “green thumb” is a myth to be ignored What is the goal of a family garden Produce food Save money Improve quality of life Provide better healthier nutrition Should you go with “raised beds” What is the ground like What is your climate like Can you either automate or simply irrigation Are you going to want “borders” if so why Where are you going to get your material and how much will it cost Why I recommend buying plants your first year, at least some of them Plants I recommend buying Peppers Tomatoes Broccoli/Cauliflower High success rate Very broad availability of varieties now Cost is not bad, and this is a learning year Plant I recommend planting from seed in the ground Peas/Beans etc. Beets Radishes Arugula Dill Squash Melons Plants I recommend starting in containers even in your first year or buying Chard Lettuce Basil Parsley Chives Why everyone should grow sweet potato Bed establishment Double dig, sheet mulch or both Bring in material – yes till/turn it in Mulch with wood chips The things that will make your plants successful almost no mater what Dr. Earth 1014 Premium Gold Organic All-Purpose Fertilizer (balanced NPK) – Link Garrett Juice Plus (foliar feed) – Link Blood and Bone Fertilizer – Link GS Plant Foods Liquid Kelp – Link Hydro Organics Earth Juice Cal-n-Mag Plant Food – Link Liquinox Iron Zinc Chelated Solution – Link Endo Mycorrhizae Fungal Inoculation – Link Azomite consider sourcing locally – Link Green Sand consider sourcing locally – Link Lava Sand – source this locally! Getting back control of the money system is critical to solving almost all human problems. Chris joins us today to discuss how the rise of Bitcoin, cryptocurrencies and block chains may seem like the beginning of the revolution, when in fact it’s simply the next logical step in an even bigger transition in the world.  Episode-1952- Before You Can Follow Your Passion – You Have to Find It | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:20

Tweet There is a divide among entrepreneurs on whether or now a person should, “follow their passion” in business.  We can table that today though, because whether you do so in business or just in life, I think we can all agree at some point you should fallow you passion.  If not what is the sense of living? For me this was easy, my passions are and will always be first and foremost my family.  What I do I do to support them first.  But to be a good husband and father, a man must also follow his own path and have joy in his life.  So my other passions are nature, the outdoors, hunting, fishing, growing food, foraging, working with animals, solving problems, cooking and teaching. And I have always known this, 20 years ago I might have explained it a bit differently but the list would have been the same.  Yet when I talk to many people I realize that often people do not know what their “lifestyle passions” are.  I mean most people are passionate about their family and friends, but when it comes to something of their own they often struggle with nailing it down. Much like a gifted musician who can’t understand why a student can’t just learn four simple cords in a few minutes, I have always struggled with this concept, how the hell can anyone not know what their passions are.  When you do it, you feel it, you know it, that is why it is a passion!  Given that one of my passions is solving problems, I decided to look into this and today’s show is what I have come up with. Join Me Today to Discuss… Why does this even matter, why is this so important Before we start, a lesson from our friends the dogs Reasons many do not know their passions They have yet to experience it They think it has to be something “big” They misdefine passion They are afraid to admit what they really want Start with what you don’t want, what things do you not want in your life What makes you angry, and of those things which do you have influence over Define your lifestyle goals What things do you do that make you most happy What things do you do that you just don’t want to stop doing If I gave you 10 million dollars, what would you do with it Have you ever had a “personal perfect moment” Pick 20 items to take to prison with you, yes I am serious Who do you see as truly successful and why do you feel that way about them Specific cautions Just because it feels good doesn’t mean it is good for you Just because it works for someone you admire doesn’t mean it will work for you The number one thing separating people from their passions is fear The road map Be Peter Gibbons for a day, take a day and do nothing The next day write an essay, called, “My Perfect Day” Define the lifestyle you want to have Build a path that matches your lifestyle goal as soon as possible Final Thoughts Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 1952 Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Gear PermaEthos.com TspAz.com – Support TSP When You Shop Amazon The Granddaddy’s Gun Club Bullhead Fishing Forum – A new little site I started You Belong to Me – Jo Stafford Sponsors of the Day Self Reliance Magazine Western Botanicals Mobility Enabled Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon. Tweet Every day I get emails about starting up a business.  Some really concern me because they are like, “I am thinking of buying 20 acres, my friend recommend your stuff on permaculture and I want to build a permaculture business on my new land.  Do you think it is possible to get to a decent income in two years”. Whoa!  Shut the front door!  This scares the shit out of me, some guy is going to make a major investment here, I can tell by the email he doesn’t even really know what permaculture is, has no experience farming or ranching and likely no business experience either. It also isn’t just permaculture all sorts of businesses, I have X idea, this my basic Y plan, do you think it will work.  The only honest answer is I have NO EFFING IDEA. Let me put it another way, say someone said to you, “I want to build a full time income podcasting about subject XYZ, not just enough to survive on, but to make a really decent living on.  Do you think my idea will work?” Now you might think I know this guy Jack, and Jack makes a great income, his show is almost 9 years running now, he does great so, sure it will work.  But you see the other shoes, don’t you about a metric shit ton of them?  Here are a few… Will this guy work as hard as Jack does Is he as good or can he become as good or better on the mic then Jack Will this person effectively market the product Will they develop the necessary technical skills Will they keep up a frequency that engages people long term Will they develop a truly valuable product to sell How committed are they to success Do they even know anything about subject XYZ Will they use drugs and squander initial success Do they have a ficken clue about running a business Is his chosen topic diverse enough On the last one let me say you have no idea, I was told no way I could do a show a day for very long, see how that worked out right?  In my business I am the key variable and in any business the entrepreneur is the key variable.  This has led me to 12 rules I will discuss today.  Much like my tenets or modern survival they are more how to think rather than what to do, so that you can develop your own plan and strategy and further answer the key question for yourself. See when you say to me “do you think _____ business will work”, I have no idea but my gut is NO it won’t, no matter how good the idea is.  Why?  Because you are asking the question and you don’t already have your own answer.  So I would say no at that moment, if you plunge into it t that moment you will likely fail. You should be saying to yourself, “how can I make this idea work”, and when you have answers to that, my opinion won’t mean shit, and when you get to that point, most likely you are going to succeed. Spirko’s Twelve Rules of Business… You can improvise your way to success but only a plan makes you sustainable Follow your passion but understand passion doesn’t pay the bills No one will ever care about your success more than you Good customers are better than gold, bad customers are cancer – irradiate them If you start saying, “things will pick up” with no plan you will soon be out of business Become a life long student of your subject, but learn by study and application You had better be able to explain your revenue model to a 12 year old Working hard at the wrong things is worse than doing nothing at all If you are talking/marketing/targeting someone disinterested find someone else fast Every business can succeed, and every business can fail A revenue channel or business unit is not a business, only a piece of one Successful marketing is getting others to tell your story for you Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 1947 Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Gear PermaEthos.com TspAz.com – Support TSP When You Shop Amazon The Granddaddy’s Gun Club Near You – Fra[...]
