Hello Coffee Party Radio listeners. This week, let’s get to The Bottom Line on race, poverty, and healthcare in America. I grew up in the neighborly Sesame St. generation, but having lived all over this country, I know everyone has an opinion or an experience related to race... some with which I do not agree or appreciate. Race and socioeconomics certainly affect and shape our public policy. Have you read Dead On Arrival? It is an interesting history of the “politics of health care in twentieth-century America,” written by Colin Gordon. The book was assigned reading for my college history course, and I had the pleasure of reading it, while passionately rallying for single payer health care legislation, as it was killed in Congress in December of ‘09. I think many people would be appalled to learn how much racism and bigotry played into the creation of healthcare/insurance system we have in America. So let’s have a big, civil discussion and find out what this country is getting right when it comes to race and public policy, where we are dead wrong, and what we want for the next generation. We have been talking about the 'war on women' as an assault on the rights and roles of women in American society, and a symptom of today's wide spread quashing of the very soul of American ingenuity and optimism. If we agree that the dignity and freedom of all Americans is on the line, even though this battle is against women specifically, what is our plan? How do we defend the community of women, and supportl other threatened American communities at the same time? WE ARE WOMEN has organized a nation wide action on April 28th. Women in Texas and other states have been fighting for Planned Parenthood. We interviewed Bonnie Ward, one of the Virginia 30, about her "storm trooper" arrest and detainment. Eye witness account of March 17, 2012 police riot at Occupy Wall Street: Last night, the NYPD incited what amounts to a police riot in Zuccotti Park. After several hundred of us gathered for a peaceful General Assembly, with figures like Michael Moore and Cornel West dropping in from Left Forum to show their solidarity, NYPD brutally beat and arrested around 100 people, including my friend Cecily McMillan, who was beaten so hard her ribs were cracked, she had a seizure, and she had to be taken to the ER, where she was denied visits from family and friends and still remains, to my knowledge. It has been almost a week since the Coffee Party first face to face board meeting. We are a very diverse group with a common cause. We all want what is best of ALL Americans. We can get there by several paths. In that process we must be cognizant not only of our own sensibilities but the sensibilities of others. The diverse nature of our board is a microcosm of America. The fact that we could come to a consensus on prescient issues, it is indicative that America can as well. I am devoting this show to just that. I want Coffee Party members as well as all listeners to call me and tell me what is on your mind. Let us talk about it whether it is related to Coffee Party or just related to our body politic.
