Public Speaking Tip #13 Can you Over Practice? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:01:38

The three key words in Public Speaking are Practice, Practice, Practice. But is there a situation where you can have over-prepared? TRANSCRIPT; Can you Over-Prepare for a Talk? When asked about how to become a good public speaker I always respond with the key words – Practice, Practice, Practice. But can you be over prepared? Many speakers believe they can overcome their pre-speech nerves by over-preparing, believing that if they rehearse and practice enough nothing could possibly go wrong. Wrong. Something will always go wrong but usually the audience will be oblivious to it. You’ll leave out a small point, hesitate over a pronunciation or have a momentary brain fade but the odds are you will be the only one to notice. The audience has no idea what you are going to say or where you are going with a train of thought. It’s not your ‘mistake’ or ‘stumble’ that’s important but how you recover from it. Bottom line – all the practice in the world will not make perfect. Accept it. Your speech is not going to succeed on content alone. It’s how you come across, so spend more time on your vocal delivery, your appearance, your gestures, your eye contact and communication skills with the audience. All the great content in the world doesn’t mean much if your audience has fallen asleep through boredom. Prepare your speech thoroughly but don’t forget you and your talk are a package, a performance. All aspects must be delivered in harmony. Worry less about being word perfect and concentrate more on communicating your message. If you can, remember it’s more about the audience and what you can do for them than it is about you. That thought alone will help reduce pre talk anxiety.

 Public Speaking Tip #12 - I Still Get Nervous | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:01:02

Even after all these years before a public speaking engagement I Still Get Nervous. So what do I do to overcome anxiety? TRANSCRIPT: A question I’m almost always asked during my public speaking workshops is “How long did it take to overcome your fear of public speaking?” The answer invariably shocks them. I say I never have. Every single time before I get up to speak I still have butterflies churning around in my stomach. The secret is I’ve learned to control them, to harness that nervous energy and turn it into positive energy. To feel anxious before a performance is entirely normal. Ask a footballer before they run out for a game, an Olympic athlete on the starting line, a singer about to go on stage. Nervous energy is totally normal but it’s how you handle it that its you apart. As long as you’ve practiced many times and are confident about your subject you've got nothing to fear. Remember your presentation isn't about you it's about your audience. Now once you turn your focus to your audience the quicker you take the heat of yourself. But the great news is it can be taught.

Public Speaking Tip#11 Make it Conversational | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:02:04

Nobody like to be lectured to. So when it comes to Public Speaking make it conversational. TRANSCRIPT: What do you prefer - someone having chat with you or someone giving you a lecture? There’s no question It’s easier to listen to somebody when they’re speaking in a conversational manner than if they are addressing you very formally . If conversation works in a one on one situation the same holds true if you’re presenting to a small or large group. So when you’re presenting, use a natural conversational style. But how do you achieve that. Always be talking to someone – you may think it’s obvious, but how many presenters have you seen that are talking to the PowerPoint screen, to their notes or to the back of the room. Make sure you Talk to one person at a time – spend a few moments with this person.Don’t make it too long or they might feel uncomfortable but just long enough that they do feel as if you have been talking to them. This will normally be the length of a phrase, or a short sentence. Imagine that you’re having a one-on-one conversation with that person. In that moment Let the other people in the room disappear from your consciousness. Look for the persons reaction to what you’re saying before you carry on. Most people will nod or smile. Then move on to another person. Asking rhetorical questions is also a way of keeping it conversational It’s a great way to get people to think about your topic, and especially how it applies to their own situation. A q like “If you could attract higher-value clients, how might that change your approach to your business?” Then pause and give them time to consider. Also telling stories That stirs your audiences imaginations – and puts your topic into a real-world setting. Remember you need to see you presentation as a two way exchange not an oration and be aware of how they are responding to you talk. A final tip on being conversational - “Speak like you talk.” record your address then listen back to it. Then ask is that something I’d say in real life? If not, go back and try again - Remember a great public speaking performance doesn’t come without a lot of hard work.
