Welcome to UnforMETable, a new show from Amazin’ Avenue that looks back on less heralded, more obscure, but quintessential Mets players from the past With the All-Star Break upon us, Rob Wolff travels back to take a look at the Mets tenure—and unlikely All-Star selection—of outfielder/super-utility player Joel Youngblood. Youngblood arrived in New York on an infamous day in Mets’ history—June 15, 1977—in a smaller trade on the day the Midnight Massacre saw Tom Seaver depart Flushing. Pegged as a utility player, Youngblood became a solid contributor for the Mets—primarily as an outfielder—as he struggled to shed his image as a supersub. Youngblood was the Mets’ lone All-Star representative in 1981 before making baseball history on August 4, 1982 thanks to the unique timing of his trade from the Mets to the Montreal Expos. Welcome to UnforMETable, a new show from Amazin’ Avenue that looks back on less heralded, more obscure, but quintessential Mets players from the past As the Mets prepare to welcome the Yankees to Queens for the second installment of this year’s Subway Series, Rob Wolff travels back to take a look at left-handed reliever Dae Seung-Koo’s brief tenure with the franchise in 2005. A veteran of many years in the Korean and Japanese leagues, the 35 year-old was brought to New York to serve as a LOOGY, and had never recorded an at-bat in his professional career. But his most memorable moment as a Met would come in the Subway Series in an unbelievable at-bat against future Hall of Famer Randy Johnson—and his daring baserunning thereafter. Considered an untouchable prospect prior to that season, Otis struggled to find a role or get in the good graces of manager Gil Hodges. Rick Ownbey was considered the most major league-ready of these as he excelled in a AAA rotation with Ron Darling and Walt Terrell, while further down in the minors a recent first round pick named Dwight Gooden was just starting his journey.
