 UnforMETable, Episode 8: Felix Millan | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1328

Welcome to UnforMETable, a new show from Amazin’ Avenue that looks back on less heralded, more obscure, but quintessential Mets players from the past This week, Rob Wolff travels back to the 1970s, as the Mets tried to get back to the promised land of the 1969 Miracle Mets. In 1973, they imported a light-hitting, smooth-fielding second baseman from the Atlanta Braves named Felix Millan.  Felix the Cat (“El Gatito”) was a key figure for the 1973 National League champions, providing solid defense and a steady, light-hitting (and well-choked-up on) bat. Although that glove would fail Millan on the biggest stage possible.  Millan would continue to be a stable, solid presence in the Mets infield until 1977, when an on-field incident would lead to the abrupt end of his major league career.  As always, you can listen or subscribe to this and all of our wonderful Amazin’ Avenue Audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, where we encourage you to leave a review if you enjoy the show.  From Complex to Queens, Episode 8: Two Vaughns don’t make a right | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3633

Welcome to From Complex to Queens, the podcast from Amazin’ Avenue focusing on the Mets’ minor leagues. This week, Steve is out of town, so Ken Lavin and Lukas Vlahos discuss some Mets’ managers past in Promote, Extand, Trade. After that, we run threw the hitter and pitcher of the week, Patrick Mazeika and Anthony Kay (who we just cannot stop talking about apparently). Next, we each discuss our favorite guy in the draft, with some wishful thinking about who might actually make it to the Mets at 12. Ken and Lukas like Andrew Vaughn a whole whole lot. Finally, we touch on one player from recent Mets’ minor league history, outfield Corey Vaughn.  A Pod of Their Own, Episode 7: More domestic violence news casts a cloud over MLB | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4926

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space. This week, we look at a key upcoming stretch for the Mets, and the injuries that may make or break it for them. (0:44) CONTENT WARNING: In the second segment of this week’s show, we speak about domestic violence. If this is content that is difficult for you to listen to or you would prefer not to hear it, skip ahead to the Seventh Inning Stretch segment. Next, we follow up on last week’s discussion of MLB’s problem with domestic violence with a look at Addison Russell’s return from suspension and new allegations surrounding Julio Urias.  If you or someone you know is in a dangerous situation or a victim of intimate partner violence, you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline. There are also many state and national organizations that provide resources to victims and survivors, including the Pace Women’s Justice Center in New York. We then move onto more uplifting territory in a return to one of our favorite segments - the seventh inning stretch, where we read and respond to some of the messages sent in by our listeners.  UnforMETable, Episode 7: Bernard Gilkey | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1322

Welcome to UnforMETable, a new show from Amazin’ Avenue that looks back on less heralded, more obscure, but quintessential Mets players from the past This week, Rob Wolff travels back to the mid 1990s, as the Mets tried to build on Generation K by bringing in a couple of veteran outfielders, including Bernard Gilkey—would would go on to have one of the great single seasons in Mets history—which led to one of the great movie cameos in Mets history.  Post-Men in Black, Gilkey hung with the Mets for a couple of more seasons, until the acquisition of one Mike Piazza indirectly led to his departure from Queens. Gilkey would soon face off against the Mets in the playoffs before his career petered out.  A Pod of Their Own, Episode 6: Baseball has a domestic violence problem | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4481

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space. This week, we discuss the sad state of the Mets, including the Adeiny Hechavarria/Dominic Smith roster move, the pitching injuries, and the beleaguered offense. CONTENT WARNING: In the second segment of this week’s show, we speak about domestic violence. If this is content that is difficult for you to listen to or you would prefer not to hear it, skip ahead to the Walk-off Wins segment. Next, we speak about Major League Baseball’s domestic violence problem and our feelings about that as female baseball fans. Specifically, we cover the way domestic violence has been framed as a redemption narrative when it comes to players like Addison Russell, Roberto Osuna, Jose Reyes, and others, when it is the stories of victims that should be front and center. We then cleanse our emotion-laden hearts with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise. Finally, we read our favorite submission to our iTunes review giveaway and announce that the winner of the Jacob deGrom Cy Young bobblehead will be alerted Wednesday morning as the show goes live.  UnforMETable, Episode 5: Nino Espinosa | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1065

Welcome to UnforMETable, a new show from Amazin’ Avenue that looks back on less heralded, more obscure, but quintessential Mets players from the past This week, Rob Wolff travels back to the late 1970s, an era of big hair (but fortunately no plastic grass—at least at Shea). We’ll take a look at the brief but joyful Met tenure of the young, afro-sporting Nino Espinosa.  Hear about Espinosa’s impressive debut, looking like a solid young starter in 1977—including one memorable game in which he almost matched the recent dominance of Noah Syndergaard, driving in the only run of a 1-0 victory—over that year’s soon to be minted Cy Young award winner, Steve Carlton. You’ll also hear about his quick flame out, getting traded to the Phillies, where he was a member of the 1980 team that won the World Series, though he did not get to play in the postseason. Thereafter, his career ended abruptly; sadly, his life would tragically do the same not much later.
