All the LSU Tigers needed to do on Saturday in Fayetteville was beat the Arkansas Razorbacks. That's it. Win, and you're in the SEC Championship. While it wasn't a very pretty win, and it wasn't a win that came without some stress and anguish from Tigers fans, it was a win nonetheless that set LSU up for a bid to the SEC Championship game in Brian Kelly's first season as head coach for the Tigers. Just how big is that for Kelly in year one, and how reassuring is that for Tigers fans for the Kelly era in Baton Rouge? Plus, it was a tale of two teams on Saturday. The defense absolutely DOMINATED the Arkansas Razorbacks holding them to just ten points on the day. While the entire defense deserves credit, one player in particular emerges as the obvious key to the game. True freshman Harold Perkins recorded four (FOUR!!!!) sacks on the day and singlehandedly won LSU the game against Arkansas. He has proven to be a force for this LSU defense and may just have a case for the best defensive player in college football. As a true freshman. However, the other side of the ball wasn't nearly as dominant as Perkins and the rest of the LSU D. LSU's offense struggled against Arkansas DC Barry Odom's defense, notching just 13 points on the day and limiting QB Jayden Daniels to just 86 yards and zero touchdowns. The LSU Tigers defeated the then-number 7 ranked Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday handing them their first loss of the season and catapulting the Tigers to the top spot in the SEC West. So how was LSU able to pull off a 45-20 win over a top ten ranked team in college football? Partly because of the breakthrough we have seen from Jayden Daniels. In the beginning of the season, Jayden Daniels looked like a quarterback too timid to take risky shots downfield and would rather elect to carry the ball himself. This limited LSU's offense immensely and a wide receiver room that could stack up against any in SEC football was not getting utilized. But we saw a different Jayden Daniels against the Florida Gators last week. Daniels scored six total touchdowns in The Swamp and repeated the performance at home against Lane Kiffin's squad. The LSU Tigers hosted Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday afternoon for a primetime SEC matchup. Ole Miss entered the game undefeated and ranked in the top ten – and in the first quarter, they looked like it. Jaxson Dart and Ole Miss' offense moved down the field with ease, scoring on each of their first three possessions. LSU was down 17-3 and it looked like they didn't have an answer for Kiffin and the Rebs. So how was LSU able to not just squeak out a win, but dominate Ole Miss with a final score of 45-20 after an early deficit? LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels looked like a super hero for the second week in a row, putting up almost 370 total yards of offense and five total touchdowns: two in the air and three on the ground. After a six total touchdown performance against Florida, Daniels is quickly proving wrong those who claimed Daniels is not a starting caliber SEC QB. He has improved immensely since Week 1 against Florida State and looks much more confident and poised in the pocket to add another layer to LSU's offense. Plus, defensive coordinator Matt House was able to make adjustments on the defensive side of the ball that nearly shut down Ole Miss' high-powered offense. House was able to utilize freshman superstar Harold Perkins and that made all the difference. Lane Kiffin even credited Perkins after the game, saying "nobody can do what 40 can do." While LSU still has mistakes to correct and problems to clean up (special teams, slow starts in important games), LSU fans can feel much better about their team as it sits 6-2 on the season and atop the SEC West as the Alabama Crimson Tide come to town the first weekend in November. It's a question that I thought would have been ridiculous going into this season. It's also a question that still might be ridiculous considering how difficult the LSU Tigers schedule is the rest of the season with Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas A&M on the horizon. But if LSU beats Ole Miss this weekend is it THAT ridiculous to pose this question: Can LSU punch their ticket to the SEC Championship? I think we can start having that conversation but only if LSU beats Ole Miss. So how exactly can they do that? The Rebels offense revolves around it's run game and the running back duo of Quinshon Judkins and Zach Evans. Judkins is averaging over 100 yards per game with 10 total touchdowns on the season while Evans is averaging around 87 yards per game with seven rushing touchdowns so far in his 2022 campaign. The way LSU can win this game starts and ends with limiting what Ole Miss can do on the ground, and forcing quarterback Jaxson Dart into uncomfortable passing situations.
