Common English Words For Travel Ep 250 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 10:22

A lot of English language students confuse these common English words: travel, traveling, trip, journey, tour, voyage, cruise. So let’s find out why and listen to these common English words being used correctly. This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/common-english-phrases/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/07/25/english-phrases/ THIS WEEKS LINK: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/08/12/common-english-words/   Summary: Common English Words Understanding the difference between synonyms is very important. Especially when you study a foreign language! Make sure you listen & learn in today's podcast and don’t forget to listen to the lesson several times until you are sure you can understand every word. Adept English has a course which covers the 500 most common English words and it’s available here: https://adeptenglish.com/most-common-500-words-course/ Those 500 English words make up 80% of all English conversations and written articles. So focusing on these words is a super efficient way to boost your understanding of any English conversation. The idea behind the course is that there are several interesting audio stories written using only the 500 most common English words. By listening to these stories repeatedly will help you hear the words being pronounced by a native English speaker. You will also hear the words being used in context, over and over, so your brain will store them in your longer term memory, ready for you to use more automatically and improve your English language fluency.   If you need to understand more about our teaching technique, then listen to this podcast https://adeptenglish.com/2018/05/14/speaking-english-podcast/ which explains how to get the best out of our podcasts. Some people are great at keeping secrets, some are just awful. Which are you? Today we talk about an English idiom that’s used to describe the ‘act’ of telling a secret. However, nothing really makes me happier than when I get a message from someone who’s making progress with their English language fluency in the real world. There is just no point in Adept English if real English language students are not being helped by what we do. So when I get a message on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/adeptenglish/ from one of the many students who listen to our podcasts, or have bought one of our courses and hear that they have passed a test or applied successfully for a new job that required English speaking I’m thrilled. Today it was Alejandro: Hi, good afternoon. I’m writing because I’m very thankful with you and the podcast of Adept English. 7 months ago I started to study English hardly because I wanted to improve my English level. But I noticed that I was improving my grammar, my reading comprehension, my vocabulary, but, I wasn’t able to understand when I listened something and my conversation wasn’t fluent. So, I discovered Adept English and, since the first Podcast that I listened. I loved Hillary, her voice and her method. Rapidly I noticed that my listening skills was improving very fast and so my fluency. Even I subscribed to the free Seven Rules of Adept English and I bought the 500 most common words in English course. Now, I’m applying for a job and I did my English Test. The result is level C2. I’m very happy, and proud of myself... But specially, I’m very thankful for the Adept English method and the material for studying and develop the English learning. Makes me so happy reading that. Thanks Alejandro for believing in our system of learning and well done to you! Your hard work paid off. Good luck to you.  English Conversation: The Demise Of The British High Street Ep 248 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:02

40% of British shoppers wouldn’t care if the high street shops disappeared.  Unless the UK high street changes to meet the needs of its customers, its customers will continue to ignore it. This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/speak-english-fluently/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/08/01/english-language-learning/ THIS WEEKS LINK: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/08/05/english-conversation/   Summary: English Conversation Today’s lesson will focus on English conversation practice and talk about something we all do and that’s shop for things. We will talk about the changing shape of shopping on the British high street and what the future of shopping in the UK might look like. The British high street is in trouble and the little shops we grew up visiting with our mums and dads are closing their doors and disappearing from the high street. I know I wouldn’t buy any electronics from a shop, why would I want to disadvantage myself by only looking at one seller's price when I could go online and easily compare 10 or more prices for exactly the same item and just buy the cheapest?  English Language Learning: It Is Hot Hot Hot Ep 247 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 8:38

Last year it was all about how cold the UK got, this year we are all about the “UKs hottest day on record”. So this is an interesting English language learning lesson all about how the British handle too much sun. This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/speak-english-fluently/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/07/18/spoken-english/ THIS WEEKS LINK: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/08/01/english-language-learning/   Summary: English Language Learning Given we already have a podcast on why the British don’t plan for cold weather extremes, it only seems fair we do one for why the British don’t plan for hot weather. It’s not that we don’t care about the problems! The British are famous for complaining about the weather. We British know that these extreme weather events do not happen often enough for the whole country to spend a lot of money fixing the issues we experience. So we would rather save the money and protest about the problems for 2-3 days and then forget about all it until the next time. So what does all this have to do with learning to speak English fluently? Today the Adept English podcast is all about improving your English fluency.  Hybrid words: The Correct Term Is Portmanteau Ep 246 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 10:53

Normally when you get a red line under a word your typing on your computer or phone you think, oh no spelling mistake, I need to correct that. But sometimes (very rarely!) you get to smile and say no silly computer I am right you are wrong! Today we discuss portmanteau and have some fun with made up English words. This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/english-grammar-practice/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/05/16/esl-english-grammar/ THIS WEEKS LINK: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/07/29/portmanteau/ Summary: Portmanteau I’d say about 95% of you will say what is “portmanteau”, I’ve never heard of it. It’s not a commonly used English word, but it explains a very common thing we do in English where we mix words together to create a new one. The word portmanteau originates from French and is a French portmanteau of the words porter (to carry) and manteau (coat). So you might have heard of a “Spork” (or lots of other examples; velcro, brunch and even company names like Amtrak) but today you learn that these hybrid English words are two words joined and portmanteau properly describes them. If you like what we do here at Adept English please tell people about us, we want to share our “Listen & learn” system of learning to speak English with as many people as possible. Today we have some fun with English fruit idioms that you will hear in everyday English conversation here in Britain. This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/idioms-with-sentences/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/06/13/english-idioms/ THIS WEEKS LINK: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/07/22/fruit-idioms/   Summary: Fruit Idioms There are a lot of fruit “themed” idioms in use today, far more than you would expect. I guess we all like fruit and it’s something we all have in common so it’s a powerful way of communicating something we would (or should) understand. Although you might not care that much about fruit idioms or idioms, remember that much more is going on when you listen to this podcast lesson. You will listen to over 2,000 English words, you will listen and learn to train your brain to hear and tune into a native British English speaker. The intonation, pronunciation and grammar will get stored away ready for you to use more automatically. You will recognise sound patterns, like the start of an English sentence and the end, this will help you expect these things when you have your own conversations with English speakers. You will train your brain to think and respond to English without translation. This will dramatically improve your fluency. You will speak with more confidence, you will sound more fluent. This is the power of learning through listening.
