 Spoken English: Let’s Review Something Ep 243 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 10:03

Today we improve our spoken English by listening to a podcast which is all about theme parks and LEGO. Not only will you learn some great everyday English vocabulary, but if you ever decide you want to visit a UK theme park, you will learn all about the Lego Windsor theme park. This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/speak-english-fluently/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/05/20/how-to-speak-english-fluently-and-confidently/ THIS WEEKS LINK: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/07/18/spoken-english/ Summary: Spoken English LEGO is very popular in most parts of the world. In the US in the Christmas season they sell 27 boxes of LEGO every second! I’ve read that there are 8 bricks of LEGO for every human on earth! I dread to think where all this plastic ends up in the environment. LEGO is now much more than the small plastic bricks that it began as over 50 years ago. Today you have LEGO films, action figures, computer games, costumes and even theme parks. So today's podcast will talk about LEGO and a review of the LEGO theme park in the UK. We will learn about the theme park and improve our spoken English at the same time.  English Accent Words: New, Nyoo and Noo Ep 241 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 11:09

Once we have trained our brains to listen to a language and we mimic the pronunciation of that language we forget or just don’t notice that we all pronounce words differently depending on where we are on the planet. So today we cover some English accent word pronunciation. This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/pronounce-english-words/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/06/20/water-pronunciation/ THIS WEEKS LINK: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/07/11/english-accent-words/   Summary: English Accent Words My son was watching a game review or hints and tips type gaming channel on YouTube, talking about a game called “Call of Duty”. Two things jumped out at me, one, the way the American presenter said “News” the way he pronounced “Tube” and then the word “Duty”. It was a perfect word storm of words pronounced completely differently to the way you would say them if you have a British accent. So today's podcast talks about the differences between British and American pronunciation. It’s not about video games, but it covers some common everyday English words you would expect to use in normal conversation. Don’t forget! Listening to the podcast is helping you learn much more than just the topic, you will learn a lot of common English vocabulary, practice listening to a native British English speaker and you will train your brain to listen to sounds of English language, helping you with automatic English fluency.  Fun Short Stories for ESL Students Ep 240 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:05

Learning to speak English through listening to native English speakers is a quick and easy way to learn. Today we have responded to several requests from ESL (English as a second language) students who liked the last ESL short story which you can find here: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/04/29/short-stories-in-english-for-students/ This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/learn-english-by-listening/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/07/01/english-listening/ THIS WEEKS LINK: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/07/08/short-stories-for-esl-students/   Summary: Short Stories for ESL Students Although it was ESL students who asked for this podcast for their English listening test, it will be of value to anyone who wants to learn to speak English fluently. We designed the Adept English learning system to make learning English as efficient as possible, so listen to today's podcast lesson and find out why this way of learning is just better than traditional English lessons. Why use a story? Humans are always ready to learn by listening to stories, it’s how mankind has survived for so long, we pass key survival information as stories to our children and they pass that onto their children. Our brains are always ready to treat a story as more important information. Humans store story based information in our longer term memory so you get much more learning value out of listening to your English information in the format of a story. So listening to a story spoken by a native English speaker is a great way to store English vocabulary and pronunciation information you will need to speak English fluently.  English Phrases Not In The Dictionary Ep 239 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 9:03

Learn common English phrases used in everyday conversational English. In today's podcast, along with a lot of useful English vocabulary, we learn an English phrase which you won’t find in a dictionary. This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/common-english-phrases/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/02/14/common-english-phrases-for-conversation/ THIS WEEKS LINK: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/07/04/english-phrases-to-learn/   Summary: English Phrases To Learn One of our guiding principles here at Adept English is the need to focus on what’s useful to learn and learn that first. We work backwards from good understandable English conversational English, specifically the vocabulary, idioms and phrases you might encounter. And we only use everyday English in our lessons. We encourage you to listen to the audio and work through the free and full English transcript we provide with every lesson, so you can familiarise yourself with the conversational English you would expect right now today in any part of Britain. It’s a simple problem really, you can try to learn all 171,476 (Oxford Dictionary) English words starting with ‘A’ and ending in ‘Z’ or you can focus on the words you would need to hold a typical conversation in English right now today in the streets of London. Only 500 common English words make up 80% all English conversations, so learning those 500 words: https://adeptenglish.com/most-common-500-words-course/ would probably be a good start, then you need to learn more specialised vocabulary so you can converse in specific topics, like about computers or maybe science or holidays. The point is: "learn those words where you get the most value for your learning effort first”.     If you need to understand more about our teaching technique, then listen to this podcast https://adeptenglish.com/2018/05/14/speaking-english-podcast/ which explains how to get the best out of our podcasts. Here at Adept English we know all about learning to speak English through listening to spoken English. One of the most important parts of your journey to learning to speak English fluently is training your brain to hear and understand English words, phrases and sentences. So you need to practice English listening, especially to English being spoken by a native English speaker. The full article can be found here: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/06/24/practice-english-listening/ This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/learn-english-by-listening/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/05/30/how-to-use-the-ish-suffix/ Summary: Practice Your English Listening Hey that’s easy right? There are many free English videos on YouTube or Facebook where you can hear English being spoken. That's true, but these audio/video files are rarely designed to help new English language learners. It’s often distracting, it does not have a transcript to help you with vocabulary you don’t understand. The speed of the English spoken will be fast, the number of people speaking can confuse you and make it difficult to follow. The video may even have music or special effects going off which pollute the sounds you are hearing. So yes, it is easy to find lots of spoken English on the Internet it’s just not designed to help new English language learners learn to practice English listening. That’s one of the main reasons Adept English exists, we started out looking for spoken English online that we could use and we just couldn't find any that were: * English spoken by a native British English speaker * English spoken slowly with a neutral English accent * Common everyday English that is useful right now in everyday English conversations * English audio that comes with a free and full transcript to help with difficult words * English listening material interesting for students, so they can listen to the audio many times * Audio files that are free and easy to download to your mobile phone * Audio and Video files that cover up to date and interesting stories about the UK and British culture so you learn to speak English and learn about Britain The good news is if you just found us, Adept English does all of this and much more. With two new English podcast lessons every week. So if you don’t already follow us, join the 2 million people who have listened to our lessons and subscribe to us now. There are a lot of English water idioms and you hear some popular ones regularly in everyday English conversation. So today we learn two of the most common and importantly we practice our water pronunciation. It was only later did I hear how Americans say exactly the same word differently to the British. It’s of no surprise that English language learners struggle with the pronunciation of “water”. In this English listening practice podcast I wanted first to say the word water a lot! So you can hear it over and over and get used to the way it's spoken by a native English speaker. Without boring you to death!  Learn British Accent With Received Pronunciation Ep 234 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 10:02

So let’s start by saying “There is no British accent”. That may sound confusing but if you think about it, Britain is actually a collection of countries; England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland. The people of these countries all speak English differently. The full article can be found here: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/06/17/learn-british-accent-2 This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/pronounce-english-words/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/06/10/name-pronunciation-audio/ Summary: Learn British Accent Each of these British countries has one or more dialects, and accents of their own. The common spoken language is English, so there is an English accent, and it will vary depending on which country the person speaking is from and most likely what part of the country they come from. I think the confusion comes from the common perception that British people sound more like the TV and Film stars you might see and hear if you live outside of Britain. Most of the British people don’t have an English accent like Hugh Grant or speak like her royal highness the Queen or BBC news presenters. We mostly speak the TV or Film type English accent, you might be familiar with, in the South of England.   If you need to understand more about our teaching technique, then listen to this podcast https://adeptenglish.com/2018/05/14/speaking-english-podcast/ which explains how to get the best out of our podcasts.  Are You A Plain Vanilla Person? Ep 231 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 7:50

Today we talk about the use of Vanilla as in English idiom. However  “Be careful what you say. You can say something hurtful in ten seconds, but ten years later, the wounds are still there.” - Joel Osteen. The full article can be found here: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/06/06/plain-vanilla-person This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/idioms-with-sentences/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/05/13/cooking-idioms/   Summary: Plain Vanilla Person The words you use when you write or speak with others can leave a big impact and create a lasting impression of you. This can be good or bad. So be careful when using your English vocabulary and choose your words wisely. Over time, even innocent English words get incorporated into use, by groups of people, which may be a slur or meant as an insult or even just slang for an activity you might not even understand it’s so exotic or only insiders know the true meaning. Sound complicated? Well, yes, it can be if the words being borrowed are in mainstream conversational use, like Vanilla. It’s all about the context of the use of the word. If you hear an English word being used far out of the context of the conversation, so maybe you're talking about someone on TV and you hear the word “They have a vanilla personality” you should think hmm.. that's an odd word maybe there is a lot more implied meaning behind its use. Do you really need to worry about this, well yes! People can use "Vanilla” to insult white people, suggest a sexual behaviour, call someone a bore. It can also mean you're talking about cooking, maybe suggest someone is not that interesting, or even about finance. It turns out Vanilla is the swiss army knife of words.  British Accent Practice Ep 230 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14:47

When you learn to speak a language, like English, you spend your early days just trying to remember vocabulary and basic sentence structure. It’s hard work. There are so many things to remember just to say a few English words out loud. You probably won’t have time to think about accents. The full article can be found here: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/06/03/british-accent-practice-2/ This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/english-speaking-practice/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/05/27/ielts-listening-practice-online/   Summary: British Accent Practice This is interesting because your first language and where your English teacher comes from will have a very strong influence on your future English accent. If your French and your English teacher is American, your accent will be different to a French learner who learns to speak English with a British teacher. Does this matter? Well, yes and no, most native English speakers will understand you regardless of your accent. But it can have a big impact on your understanding of English speakers who have strong regional accents. If your learning to speak English to help with a job, then listening to English speakers from the region in which you want to work, makes sense.  Listen And Learn How To Use The Ish Suffix Ep 229 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 8:51

Today we help explain the use of suffix and explain one particular suffix “-ish” using examples in everyday English conversation. The full article can be found here: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/05/30/how-to-use-the-ish-suffix This Articles Group: https://adeptenglish.com/learn-english-by-listening/ Last Article In Group: https://adeptenglish.com/2019/05/23/esl-short-stories-for-adults/   Summary: How To Use The Ish Suffix There are lots of suffices used in the English language, like; “-ism” real-ism, “-ist” real-ist, “-ista” fashion-ista, “-istic” pur-istic, “-al” familli-al. You could look up more if you want (-ion, -ior, -ious, -isation, -ise). Native English speakers often use the -ish suffix as a way of approximating something. For example, I think the coat colour was green, so I might say “The coat was green-ish.” We native English speakers often break the rules, younger English speakers abuse the use of a suffix to make a word cool, I heard someone young saying they thought the behaviour of a person was “creep-ish” i.e. they “the person in question” was obnoxious or weird but not completely creepy. Young English speakers sometimes just say "ish" using the suffix as a word in it's own right to answer a question. It used to be simple, use -ish when you were being inclusive or trying to suggest “belonging to” for example “Brit-ish”, “Dan-ish”, and mostly use -ish for approximation. Today you hear words with a suffix just to make them sound cool. The only way to learn the sufficed words worth learning is by listening to native English speakers use the words in everyday conversation.
