112 hour work week, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Life, History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 24:03

Episode 112:  There’s been much made of 4 hour work weeks and those that earn a living by goofing off in exotic places like Bali.  I’m sure those lifestyles exist, I just don’t know anyone living them.  The financially independent middle class people I know tend to work something like 112 hours a week. No, they’re not workaholics.  It’s just that they do what they love.  Their business or work is structured around their lifestyle.  They’re not chained to a desk, they’re living out their passions and it just so happens to earn them a living. It’s usually not glamourous, it might be a plumbing contractor that has the liberty to make his own schedule or work with his hands. As you consider ways to increase your earning power, make sure you’re building your career around your lifestyle.  Patience to build, preserve & grow wealth (Part 1), Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Life, History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 36:50

Episode 110:  In light of the many questions and comments I’ve received about taking a cash position, I’ll reiterate my thoughts on the risk management strategy of being in cash. If you sat out of the stock market for an entire year because you felt the risk/reward strategy was not in your favor (I’m not suggesting that you do this), at current rates of inflation you’d lose about 2% of the purchasing power of your money.  This week the S&P500 fluctuated 1.8% (peak-to-trough). Generally, any week in the stock market will have as high as or higher of a loss risk than an entire year of inflation (at current rates). Listen to tomorrow’s podcast for Part 2.  Inflation fears- watch Oil & Interest Rates, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Life, History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:18

Episode 109:  With the increase in oil prices over the past weeks and a tightening job market, Wall Street is starting to worry about inflation.  That’s one of the reasons for rising interest rates and of late gold has even broken above $1200/oz. My thought is that the oil price pendulum has swung too far and supply/demand does not justify prices above $60.  I’m watching for a pullback.  It’s still anyone’s guess what the Fed will do with interest rates. The market is turbulent because investors know that profits will suffer if the cost of labor and money continue to rise.  Tesla lithium battery trend? Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Life, History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:20

Episode 108:  In today’s episode we’re going to do things a little differently.  As an example of how to embrace technology (wealth building principle #5) and profit from trends (wealth building principle #6) I’m going to play a commentary piece from Steven Harris (with his permission) on his opinion of Tesla’s Powerwall and the future of lithium batteries.  Steven is an expert on all things related to alternative power and he is a personal friend.  You can learn more about Steven at:  http://www.steven1234.com NOTE: This is for educational purposes only, as an example of how to spot trends.  I’m not recommending or endorsing any investments in Tesla or lithium batteries.  I have absolutely no plans to invest in this industry in the near future.  Teaching kids to SAVE, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Life, History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:35

Episode 107:  I often receive questions about how to teach kids to invest…but I prefer to teach them to SAVE.  Remember a key wealth building principle is that you must first learn to Earn & Save and only then Invest.  It’s the same for kids.  Especially since their time reference is so SHORT. * Parents should teach by example. * Have money and economic conversations with them that teach them HOW TO THINK with logic and reason. * Explain the principle of SCARCITY. * Encourage them to save money they receive from gifts or working. * Make them wait an appropriate amount of time before purchasing something with “their” money. [Maybe one day for a child that wants a toy and weeks/months for a teenage that wants a car.] * Provide them opportunities to experience INCENTIVES. * Pay them for chores or help them find jobs. * Match their savings. * Chip in to help them with a purchase once they’ve met a threshold.  401k good & bad, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Life, History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:32

Episode 106:  401k employer sponsored retirement plans (much like 403b plans) have both good and bad features.  Like all things economic, you have to make choices based on trade-offs. The following is simply my personal opinion…it may not be relevant to your situation or preferences. What I like about 401k: * Easy to set up a payroll contribution deduction through your employer. This encourages people to save by deducting the amount from their paycheck before they spend it. * High contribution limits- under age 50: $18,000;  over 50: $24,000   This is a good way to rapidly build up your retirement savings especially just prior to retirement or if you plan to get another job [assets can then be rolled over into an IRA/ROTH that offers more choices and lower fees]. * ROTH accounts are now allowable. * Employer match [this is essentially a 100% return on your money] What I dislike about 401k: * Limited investment choices and designed inflexibility. These accounts are designed to encourage mutual fund buy & hold strategies.  [My preference would be ETFs in an IRA/ROTH.]  Most plans don’t even offer a money market as a cash equivalent. * High fees. Although most fees are not readily visible, they’re there and are a major source for exorbitant profits to Wall Street.  [My preference would be ETFs in an IRA/ROTH.] * Targeted date funds. These are essentially mutual funds that allocate more of your assets into bonds as you get older.  My problem with this is the illusion that bonds are SAFE- when interest rates rise, bond funds LOSE money. * This is a positive to most people but not to me.  The easier access is made to retirement savings the more people will spend it.  Most employees also don’t realize that when they terminate employment, the loans must be repaid. Bottom line- personally I would only contribute enough to receive the full employer match (this is a 100% return on your money) and then I would max out allowable contributes to a personal IRA/ROTH [which offers more choices and flexibility].  The exception to this would be if I were nearing retirement or knew that I’d be leaving the employer in a few years- then I would consider contributing up to the maximum limit, knowing in a few years I’d roll it over to an IRA/ROTH [that I would control].  Are you pursuing happiness? Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Life, History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 35:25

Episode 102:  The pursuit of happiness is so important that it’s a phrase immortalized in the Declaration of Independence.  Unfortunately for most it is simply a cliché. In this episode I describe four paths to happiness that some listeners of this podcast are pursuing.  In each case, their desires are TOTALLY DIFFERENT.  That’s the point.  Don’t get caught up in media hyped happiness- know your passions and follow your own dreams.  They’ll lead you to happiness (and true wealth).
