Market in Uptrend/Downtrend- flip a coin, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:40

Episode 98:  S&P500 is trading below its 50 day moving average- half the people I talk to are buying “on the dips” thinking the market will go on to make new highs; the other half are going short in anticipation of a large correction. I’m sitting on the fence.  In this episode I discuss why I think the market is trading in a bracketed range with no discernable indication of forward trend or momentum.  I remain mostly in cash, which is my favorite fallback positon.  Why corporate earnings are declining, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 36:12

Episode 97:  In this episode we’ll do a market review, discuss why corporate earnings are declining, and the implications for the market April-August. Two biggest factors effecting the market are:  1) 10% of S&P500 is made up of Energy Sector which are experiencing an earnings meltdown;  2) Strength of US dollar hurting earnings at US Exporters and Multinationals (disadvantaged currency exchange rate). Earnings and the expectation of future earnings is the primary driver of stock prices.  FED commentary- elites want you on the treadmill, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:44

Episode 96:  Yesterday’s Fed press conference was no surprise.  The expected 4 part drama was yet again acted out for a mindless media.  (See http://www.investablewealth.com/good-news-is-bad-news-sp500-drops-below-50-dma/ ) Ignore the press coverage and focus on the fact that the Fed has yet again reduced their GDP growth forecast.  Their call for 2017 is a growth rate of ONLY 2.2%.  Such minuscule growth is almost inconceivable after nearly a decade of injecting $13 trillion (national debt & Fed balance sheet expansion) into the economy. In this episode we analyze a statement made by Nobel Laureate Robert Shiller to illustrate how the Elite’s solutions always become your problems. Ask yourself how long the stock market can remain at record highs with unsustainable money laundering producing a long term growth rate of only 2.2%.  Discipline to SELL, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 30:49

Episode 94:  Volatility has returned sooner than I expected.  My profits from this run were eroding and so yesterday I liquidated almost all of my long positions.  I continue to be short Gold, Oil and also just yesterday initiated a short on S&P500 (when it dropped below its 50 day moving average). In this episode I discuss the importance of having the discipline to sell and take profits (or a loss).  Asset Allocation Myth, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:36

Episode 93:  Many investors are deluding themselves with a false sense of asset allocation security.  Diversification is necessary but don’t be confused with simple schemes that promote security through bond funds. A foolish formula is often used to determine bond fund allocation simply by age- promoting the false assumption that bond funds are without risk.  This has never been true and is even less true today because of prolonged acute & chronic central bank interest rate manipulation. A large rise in interest rates will have a devastating impact on the principle held in bond funds.  PROFIT by assuming that you are the dumbest guy in the stock market, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 9:59

Episode 92:  If you want to make money in the stock market, learn to suppress your ego.  Overconfidence and arrogance result in blind spots that leave you vulnerable.  The market is defined by UNCERTAINTY…no one can predict the future.  Don’t ever forget that. There are two sides to every trade.  Each trader thinks he’s correct.  Before you commit to making your transaction, re-think your logic and consider the rationale for the opposite trade. Approach each trade as if you’re the dumbest guy in the market.  You’ll build both your humility and your wealth.  Volatility has settled-watch for base building in March, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 19:37

Episode 91:  The markets ended February nicely and volatility is down from the turbulence that was common at the beginning of the year.  I’ll be watching for stability and a base to form in March to decide when to sell and take profits.  I’m on-guard for things to fall apart when 1st Qtr earnings are released in April.  Federal Reserve inkblot guidance, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 22:20

Episode 90:  Like a Rorschach inkblot test, Wall Street interprets Federal Reserve comments to fit their narrative.  Janet Yellen didn’t clarify when the Fed Fund rate would rise, so global markets are taking that as good news and generally moving up. As always, watch the 10 year Treasury yield.  It’s again below 2%.  I’m assuming that baring an external shock, the markets will remain stable through March.  Turbulence will return as we approach April when 1st Qtr earnings will disappoint.  [Weak exports, unfavorable exchange rates, decline in Energy sector profits, and payroll headwinds at retailers like WalMart.]  The summer should be rough with the Greece bailout extension expiring and a Fed Funds rate hike looming. Oil popped today- in this episode I’ll discuss why I’m still short.  $1k won’t buy a nice BMW, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 32:31

Episode 89:  Today’s show answers listener questions about investing a small portfolio.  This is a follow up to Episode 16: Saving vs Investing. My philosophy is much different than most in the Investment Industry- I don’t think you should Invest until you’ve built a substantial Savings nest egg.  You should first learn to EARN (ie get a job or start a business), then SAVE, then INVEST. Put your effort into what has the most payoff- which in the beginning will be EARNING and SAVING.  The Investment Industry wants you to “invest” so that they can charge you fees.  The deck is stacked against people with small portfolios. Everyone asks me how to make a good $1k investment…but no one ever asks where they can buy a nice BMW with $1k.  Because they KNOW you can’t buy a nice BMW with a small sum of money…the same is true of investment opportunities.  Three ways to short & take advantage of a downtrend, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 23:30

Episode 88:  In this episode I answer questions about ways to short and take advantage of a downtrend.  For educational purposes only, I illustrate the concept of three common methods for shorting a stock or an ETF. * Sell SPY short * Buy an Option Put call on SPY * Buy SH [an inverse S&P500 ETF] Subscribe to the Wealthsteading Podcast: via iTunes:  https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/wealthsteading-podcast/id896417058 via STITCHER:   http://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=53115&refid=stpr Hosted by John Pugliano.  Ignore the hype of a NASDAQ record high- watch Treasuries, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 22:14

Episode 87:  Watch the yield on the 10 year Treasury.  As long as it stays above 2%, I think the market trend will continue to favor foreign stocks that export to the US and are energy dependent.  I’m betting on commodities to fall further.  Greece has been in decline since 200BC, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 23:47

Episode 86:  As previously mentioned, currently I like some European stocks- those favored by the strong US dollar and weak oil prices.  Many people are worried about Greece defaulting.  I believe that troubles in Greece could cause some additional market volatility.  But the drama has dragged on too long (US interest rates are back up, gold has stabilized).  The ECB has made a decisive move with QE in excess of $1 billion…about 10 times Greece’s entire GDP. Europe is an unstable place, the origin of two world wars in the past century.  It will continue to have its problems, but Greece is a minor one.  Greece’s GDP has already declined 30% in the past 6 years.  Greece’s GDP is less than Louisiana.  In terms of economic significance, Greece is to Europe what Mississippi is to the US. In 1941 Greece surrendered to Germany in about 30 days.  What do you think will happen this time?  Reality of poor retirement planning, Building Wealth, Investing, Retirement, Stock Trading, Freedom, Liberty, Applying History | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 25:30

Episode 85:  Poor retirement planning will have a detrimental effect on your lifestyle.  During income earning years, lavish lifestyles can be funded by credit card and various other forms of debt.  But the bill from deficit spending will eventually come due.  The pain will be most harshly felt in old age when earnings capacity is limited and health is in decline. People that live well in retirement do so by one of two means: * A good pension and saving at least 10% during their working years. * Those without a good pension must save at least 20% and be successful investors. Those that don’t comply with either of the above two methods will find their old age characterized by: * Working to age 70 and beyond. * Downsizing house and moving to lower cost area. * Moving in with family/friends. * Drastically reducing consumption. * Relying on government assistance.
