Post Natal Depletion: A Guide for Dads | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1671

Most mothers have experienced exhaustion, pain, forgetfulness, indecision, low energy levels, moodiness, or some form of baby brain. And it's no wonder: The process of growing a baby depletes a mother's body in substantial ways. As a result, a woman can suffer from the effects of post natal depletion for many years. For dads, it can be a minefield of uncertainty and misunderstanding. Supporting woman and families with recovery from post natal depletion is the life work of our special guest Dr Oscar Serrallach. Dr Serrallach was first to recognise something he termed Post-Natal Depletion, describing the broader clinical pattern of many women presenting with these symptoms after having children. He has since dedicated his work towards researching this condition and applying the practice of Functional Medicine to help his clients with their recovery. On this show, Dr Oscar and Sean Tonnet will nut through some of the most significant facts and actions Dads can make in supporting themselves, their woman and their children around this essential topic.First aired on 99.9 Bay FM in Byron Bay on 3rd June 2019.Produced and presented by Sean TonnetCopyright 2019 PBB Media and Sean Tonnetwww.pbbmedia.org

A young mother's experience of accessing Australian maternity care | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1746

Accessing maternity care in Australia can be a complex and confusing experience for many women. Our system is fragmented and offers various care options to various people, with some women having more options than others and many women not having enough information about their care options to begin with. We look at the positive experience of one young mother, accessing a continuity model of care and hear from her about her experiences of motherhood, creating community and the power that kind and caring support networks afford during this momentous time in a family’s life.  When birth plans change. Breech birth story. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2102

This episode we have a birth story for you. Being a Pregnancy Birth and Beyond show, we don't actually have a lot of birth stories on the show, so this is a real treat. There is a wide range of birth stories from horror stories to empowerment stories and everything in-between. And than within each birth story there are a number of versions, there is the medical story, the social story, the close friend story, the couples story, the baby's story, the personal story and what I find most interesting is the story beneath the story. Our guest is Jazzie and Lessie (Jazzie's mum, and now a grandmother). Jazzie's pregnancy might have begun like many other first time parents. Jazzie had what is refereed to as low risk pregnancy. Meaning she had no health considerations that could potentially negativity impact on her labour or baby. However sometimes the unexpected happens. This episode we hear not only about Jazzie breech vaginal birth in hospital but also about her decision making, the kind of care she received, what helped and what didn't and more here on Pregnancy Birth and Beyond media. How common is the breech position?Breech position, which is bottom first, accounts for 3% to 4% of term pregnancies.Breech positioning is more common in preterm babies with 25% in breech position at 28 weeks, The majority of breech babies born in western industrialised cultures including Australia are born by elective or planned Cesarean. If your baby is breech, what choices do you have: Every situation is different, some breech births are more favorable to a vaginal birth than others. You get to decide what is best for you and your baby. Your options are: planned caesarean section attempt vaginal birth There are studies on breech birth, for example Term Breech Trial and the Pre-MODA study which both had some different concluding results. So a breech birth presents with potential risks for the baby, this could be the type of breech, or other identified risk factors for example intrauterine growth restriction, which is a very small baby for its gestational age and parents genetic disposition. And further to the safety of vaginal breech birth is the competency of the care provider. When a healthcare provider is skilled at breech birth it is, according to Pre-MODA study, just as safe to have a vaginal breech birth as it is to have a C/S and you also have to consider the long term health implications and not just the short term. So in a short term, you could view a planned c/s as less risk adverse for the baby as in it is planned, relatively quick and hyper managed . however, the longterm health of the children born via c/s is not fully understood yet, and studies coming out are concluding mode of birth does have an impact on the health of babies and children, meaning vaginal birth overall, population based have greater health benefits for both baby and mother. C/S babies have increased need of stays in NICU, increased difficulty with early breastfeeding, less diversity in the babies microbiome, Plus all the psycho-social aspects of wellbeing to consider. In preparing for this episode I found a great resource for parents who baby is in breech position after 36 weeks. Go to www.breechbirth.net it is AU and NZ based site. www.sarawickham.com has a number of articles on breech birth, including on the Term Breech Trial, and also on c/s. The Strength in Vulnerability: For too long Men - fathers, sons, and brothers - have learned that it's better to suppress than express. Peter has worked as a Psychologist for more than 30 years. with extensive experience with men’s mental health and as a consultant to the World Health Organisation, UNFPA and UNESCO in more than a dozen countries.Together we will reflect on our experience of working with men and, as men, explore the notion that vulnerability takes courage and bravery.  The Perfection in Being Imperfect Parents with Mee Hee Douglas | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1671

Author Pam Leo inspired parents from around the world with her incitation: “Let's raise children who won't have to recover from their childhoods.”With one in 5 Australian adults experiencing depression at some point in their lives, and suicide now being the highest cause of death in young people, healing from our personal trauma and averting it from occurring in the generations behind us is arguably the most important challenge for our times. In this episode of Pregnancy Birth and Beyond we will be exploring if healing and averting trauma is really possible and if so, how we go about it. Our guest Mee Hee Douglas has dedicated much of her adult life to understanding the influence her early experiences has had on her, leading to specialising in psychoanalytic psychotherapy for children, couples and families.Mee Hee shares with us how our early experiences impact our adult lives as parents, and that is possible to heal. She also explains the primary task of parents to help our children 'digest' their traumatic experiences and integrate them into their experiences. Through Mee Hee we actually learn how being the "good enough mother" is actually exactly how we should be with our children, as they need some experiences of manageable frustration with the world, combined with knowing we are there to support.Mee Hee Douglas is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist based in Bangalow, NSW.
