1 Beer 1 Song show

1 Beer 1 Song

Summary: Hosted by Russ and Tony, each episode includes a lively discussion about a single beer and a single song. We drink the beer. We listen to the song. Disagreement and ridicule abound. Sometimes there is more than one beer. Sometimes there are no songs. Sometimes there are multiple songs. There has never been no beer. http://1beer1song.com.  #65 – Deschutes 2010 Once A Decade and The Descendents | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 38:46

Timing and planning are challenging things to master. Case in point: we recorded this episode on Saturday, 1/18, and, as you will hear, I try my best to explain the magnitude of the Descendents. Five days later, on 1/23, we went to the Atlanta screening of Filmage, the Descendents/ALL documentary. Now I'm writing this summary having already seen FILMAGE and having refreshed feelings and opinions. WHAT I'M TRYING TO SAY IS we will definitely need to revisit ye olde Descendents. ALSO A BEER: We drank Deschutes 2010 Once A Decade Ale. I am tired of typing. Listen to this crap. It's good.

#64 – Sweetwater Second Helping IPA & And So I Watch You From Afar | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:32

This is a bittersweet episode. We drink Second Helping IPA from Sweetwater Brewing in Atlanta. The sweet part is that all the profits from this beer will go to The Giving Kitchen, a foundation whose "mission is to provide crisis grants to members of Atlanta’s restaurant community facing unanticipated hardship." The bitter part is that TGK was founded after the massive outpouring of support for Ryan Hidinger following his diagnosis of stage 4 gall bladder cancer in late 2012. We originally discussed the Team HIDI campaign a year ago on episode 37. Sadly, Ryan passed on January 9th, 2014. As for music, bear with me here: Several years ago, Muss & Turner's had live bands play at their annual birthday celebration. One of those bands was Sorry No Ferrari, an Atlanta band that broke up in 2011. At the aforementioned birthday shindig, I remember Ryan telling me how much he liked Sorry No Ferrari, and then we watched them for a minute and quietly nodded along. FAST FORWARD: And So I Watch You From Afar released a new album last year and I have wanted to review one of their songs for a while. Not sure why it took so long, honestly. ANYWAY, Sorry No Ferrari had a noodley, post-rock sound and I think there are enough similarities in ASIWYFA's sound to make it worth mentioning. There. See how I tied everything together? I am a master wordsmith. [Side note: On the episode, I mentioned that I thought ASIWYFA are from England. Turns out they are from Ireland. Same thing, right?] Ryan will be greatly missed. He left a hell of an imprint on everyone he encountered and he left a hell of a legacy in the Atlanta restaurant scene and beyond. Get busy living.

#63 – AleSmith Speedway Stout and Dead Kennedys | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:01

First episode of 2014! We drink Ye Olde Speedway Stout from Ye Olde AleSmith Brewing Company in Ye Olde San Diego, California Shoppe. This episode also brings the debut of Russ's Board of Songs. Russ's first selection from Ye Old Boarde of Songse is none other than Dead Kennedys. I recount my first exposure to DK way back in the olden days, and I even did a pretty good job recapping Kinky Sex Makes The World Go Round despite not having heard it in at least 20 years. 2014 is going to be a good year for this podcast. Strap in.

 #62 – 2013 Year-End Extravaganza | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:45

Man, remember when 2013 started? That was like three weeks ago. And now it's already over. We sat down with Mr. Blake Tyers (who you may remember from Episode 20), and, just like last year, drank 3 beers and listened to 3 songs. The beers are a big Belgian, an English ESB, and an American IPA. We pontificate on Russ playing Iron Maiden for his mother. The fact that all three songs are from English artists is purely coincidental. Happy New Year!

#61 – Ommegang Take The Black ‘Game of Thrones’ Stout and Misfits | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 30:47

Just in time for Xmas, we are proud to bring you ... an episode that has nothing to do with Xmas. We drink the Game of Thrones stout from Ommegang and listen to a couple Misfits songs. Game of Thrones and Misfits--doesn't get much more 'holiday spirit' than that, does it?

 #60 – Dogfish Head 61 Minute and Fugazi | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:42

Winter is coming. Wait. Winter is here already. This week, we talk about Dogfish Head 61 Minute IPA (WHERE DOES THE EXTRA MINUTE COME FROM OH GOD IS THIS TIME TRAVEL AND/OR A STROKE) and we listen to an OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLDD Fugazi song. Trying to keep these write-ups short and sweet these days to give you more reason to listen. Speaking of listening, let us know if you ever want to be on an episode. The position of co-host is always open. The position of host is also always open.

 #59 – Great Divide 19th Anniversary Ale and Jawbreaker | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 22:24

FALL BREAK IS OVER. And we are back with ... more of the same. Actually, things are a little bit different. No, it is still Russ and Tony, but nice try. We have changed up how we select songs for each episode, and we talk about it fairly early on. You got a big, fat hint from the episode title. We drink the 19th anniversary beer from Great Divide and we listen to a song from Jawbreaker. You know how this works.

#58 – Great Lakes Brewing Company and Neko Case | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 25:04

Two beers one song! (Two songs, actually.) During a recent trip to Kentucky, I acquired one of them fancy sampler 12 packs from Great Lakes Brewing Company. We drink and discuss the award-winning Dortmunder Gold and the Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, both of which are excellent commercial examples of their respective BJCP styles. Speaking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, I knew it was a boat that sank in the Great Lakes, and I knew there was a song written about it, but, as with most things, I don't know anything of any actual value. For actual information read the Wikipedia article on the Edmund Fitzgerald. The song this week is from Neko Case. She released an album recently that a lot of people really really like. The album has a very long title. Just listen already. Housekeeping note: This is the first of two episodes recorded on Russ's deck. It was night and the crickets were out in full force. If you listen to this on headphones, the crickets are audible and provide a neat sensory backdrop.  #57 – Ballast Point Sculpin IPA and Pyres | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:50

Ballast Point Sculpin IPA is a highly regarded IPA from San Diego. Ballast Point recently started putting Sculpin in cans. We got some cans of Sculpin and drank the Sculpin out of the cans and talked about it. Pretty straight forward. We listen to a song from a band called Pyres. The song is called "Deserter" and it is on Pyres' recent album Year of Sleep. I like it a lot. Russ tries to hate it, but I caught him nodding along a couple times (specifically, at the 16:38 mark in the show). We talk about yoga pants. We do [impressions of] each others' wives. PODCASTING.  #56 – Grassroots Brewing Arctic Saison and Volcano Choir | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 29:31

A critically acclaimed beer (well, brewer) and a critically acclaimed song. We drink Arctic Saison from Grassroots Brewing, which is actually a collaboration between Shaun Hill of Hill Farmstead and Anchorage Brewing Company. If it seems like we've been drinking a lot of Saisons lately, it's because we have, but there is a good reason: Saisons are awesome. If you disagree, you are probably Russ. Actually Russ has been a good sport considering I've been pummeling him with a style that is not his favorite. We also listen to a track called Byegone from the recently released Volcano Choir album, Repave. Volcano Choir is relevant because it contains Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver (note to Russ: Bon Iver, not Gotye). I mention in the episode that Repave comes out on 9/3 and that this episode would be out before that. Just ignore that part. We also talk about Hanson and The Hanson Brothers and the movie Slap Shot.  #55.5 – 1 Beer 1 Dawg Collaboration with The Dawg Gone Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:37

We bring you a special episode this week. Our friend Kit, who hosts The Dawg Gone Podcast over at dawgsports.com, was recently burglarized and all of his recording equipment is now "in the cloud" so to speak. The Dawg Gone Podcast focuses on Georgia Football, and, with the 2013 season mere days away, we couldn't just stand on the sidelines and let a bunch of Georgia Football chatter go unchattered. We opened up the 1 Beer 1 Song studios and set about doing a collaboration episode. We are calling this 1 Beer 1 Dawg, but it is technically The Dawg Gone Podcast Episode 67. We talk about the upcoming Georgia-Clemson game and reminisce some of our fondest (and least fondest) memories of being in the Redcoat Band at UGA, all while drinking and discussing Recreation Ale from Terrapin Beer Company in Athens, GA and "Thomas" from Westbrook Brewing Company's Bearded Farmer Saison series. In an attempt to keep things topical, Westbrook happens to be in South Carolina. To recap, this episode features two beers and no songs. If you are a fan of the Georgia Bulldogs or college football in general, you will love this episode. If neither of those are really your thing, you will love this episode.

 #55 – He’Brew Vertical Jewbelation PART TWO and Daft Punk | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:52

This is the second episode of the two-episode series where we cover the second four beers (#12, #13, #14, Vertical) from a 2010 He'Brew Vertical Jewbelation Gift Pack from Shmaltz Brewing Company. If you haven't heard the first half, you need to go back and start with Episode 54, or you're going to have no idea what is going on and we're not going to be able to help you and we don't like it when you put us in a position to not be helpful because it's not fair so please stop. Señor Garrett is with us again, natch. One thing we completely neglected to mention about Shmaltz Brewing is, from 1996 to 2013, they were a contract brewer. They actually opened their own brewery in Clifton Park, NY on July 7, 2013. That's a pretty big deal, and a glaring omission on our part. Because we are terrible podcasters. The song this week needs no introduction and certainly doesn't need any additional media coverage. This is one of those times where, like the mystery song from Episode 11, we're simply trying to add our own commentary to the discourse of current popular culture. because we are cultural luminaries.  #54 – He’Brew Jewbelation Vertical PART ONE and Orquesta el Macabeo | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 36:07

This is the first episode of a two-episode series wherein we review all eight beers from a Schmaltz Brewing Company He'Brew Jewbelation Vertical Gift Pack from 2010. Our friend Garrett supplied the beer, so he gets to be on both episodes. It's part of the deal. Also, we like Garrett and have been wanting to have him on for a while now. Also, the Mackie Onyx Blackjack recording interface that changed our lives starting in Episode 45 only has two mic inputs, so I had to get an XLR splitter to accommodate three mics and don't we sound awesome yes we do. If you are interested in being a guest, please send applications to Russ's work email. We decided to split this into two episodes mostly to keep things moving. If a single beer and a single song normally take us over 20 minutes to blather on about, the thought of increasing the beer count by 700% (to eight) made us want to delete all podcasts ever. Even with three people talking about four beers and a 5-minute song, we managed to keep it to 36 minutes, and the second episode is only a couple minutes longer than that. YOU'RE WELCOME. The song this week is a bit of an exploration into the largely unknown world of SALSA! I say largely unknown world, but Garrett mentions on the show that he has a Salsa Pandora station because of course he does. I came across Oquesta el Macabeo while perusing one of them fancy NPR Heavy Rotation lists, which are like shitty Buzzfeed listicles, except not shitty. Al I can say is, thank goodness Garrett can speak Spanish, because this episode would otherwise have been even less informative, if you can imagine that.  #53 – Funkwerks Saison and Direct Hit! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 30:55

This episode got away from us right from the get go. Sure, we drank a delicious Saison from Funkwerks, and we reviewed a song from a band called Direct Hit!, but those topics ended up taking second fiddle to: Using botox as perspiration prevention (possibly in one's nether regions), Avocados, One's mental processes whilst passing corn through one's lower GI, and, of course, Twerking. Speaking of which, I love twerking, but, during the episode, Russ specifically requested examples of good twerking. So, please get in touch with us on Twitter or Facebook and send examples of good twerking for Russ to enjoy.
