SOW 72 – Video Marketing with Mr. Video, Perry Lawrence | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:09

(http://www.speakingofwealth.com/wp-content/uploads/vmarketing1.jpg)Video marketing has been around for many years and has evolved into a much simpler and far less expensive approach to reaching a desired customer base. Gone is the need to lug around huge video cameras and cords and cables, and the need to pay high fees for a professional studio. Jason Hartman interviews Perry Lawrence, aka Mr. Video, who has taken the steps used by professionals and distilled them down to an easy to use formula that guarantees better videos. Listen at:  www. SpeakingofWealth.com (www. SpeakingofWealth.com). Perry shares his camera and microphone recommendations, explains simple lighting solutions that improve the look of video, and wireless solutions for an inexpensive startup. He also talks about the best kinds of videos to shoot, such as your core passions, called the “topical approach.” “Be a giver; give your audience what they’re there for,” advises Perry. Other approaches include vocabulary (the ABC’s of your product) and a diary approach. The fundamental components of a good video production naturally include a beginning, middle and an end, which begins with establishing credibility and authority on your topic. Following is the body of the message, the time to be a giver. Set an expectation by telling them what to do next, such as signing up for a newsletter. Perry stresses the importance of limiting the whole production to 3 – 5 minutes, which he describes as the YouTube sweet spot. Perry has been in video production for over 20 years and has produced, shot, and/or edited videos for companies like Merck, Maxwell House, Nickelodeon, P&G, Ogilvy & Mather, IBM, and many others. As President of the Video Marketing Association and “Mr. Video,” Perry has quickly become the definitive resource for helping business owners and marketers strategically leverage the power of video.

(http://www.speakingofwealth.com/wp-content/uploads/hiring.jpg)As the face of business evolves, more small and medium businesses are outsourcing work to remote employees or independent contractors versus maintaining the brick and mortar offices with onsite employees. The advances in technology have made it possible to find employees and contractors around the world. (http://www.speakingofwealth.com/wp-content/uploads/genius.jpg)Join Jason Hartman for an insightful conversation on creativity with author and Executive Director for Stanford Technology Ventures Program, Tina Seelig. Tina points out that many people incorrectly believe they lack creativity and that it cannot be learned. She views this as a huge problem in that it is a matter of attitude. “If you think about it, every single sentence that you utter is a creative act,” Tina explained. “From the moment you’re born, you’re creating your life.” Listen at: www.SpeakingOfWealth.com (www.SpeakingOfWealth.com). Creativity is not exclusive to artists or musicians. Problem-solving at all levels requires creativity, whether it’s fixing a meal or designing machinery or coming up with an efficient technique. It is incredibly important to every aspect of life. Tina gives examples of how to encourage and expand creativity, as well as examples of how it is often stifled. Some of the tools for bringing out creativity are reframing, connecting and combining ideas, and challenging assumptions. Tina explains our “innovation engine,” a tool we all possess. There are three things people need to possess as an individual and three things that are critical in the outside world. As an individual, we need basic knowledge, imagination and motivation. We are affected by our environment by resources, habitat and culture. Dr. Tina Seelig is the Executive Director for the Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP), the entrepreneurship center at Stanford University's School of Engineering. STVP is dedicated to accelerating high-technology entrepreneurship education and creating scholarly research on technology-based firms. STVP provides students from all majors with the entrepreneurial skills needed to use innovations to solve major world problems. She teaches courses on creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship in the department of Management Science and Engineering, and within the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford. Dr. Seelig is also the Director of the National Center for Engineering Pathways to Innovation (Epicenter), which is dedicated infusing entrepreneurship and innovation skills into undergraduate engineering in the United States.  SOW 66 – Escape Pod with Steve Eley | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:43

(http://www.speakingofwealth.com/wp-content/uploads/podcasting3.jpg)Jason Hartman is joined on this episode by podcaster Stephen Eley. Starting back in the early days of podcasts, Steve’s interest in reading books aloud helped him decide to put together his first podcast venture, Escape Pod, begun in 2005 and which is now a very popular science fiction podcast magazine. The show provides audio short stories from various science fiction authors. Steve walks through the details that led to becoming a science fiction podcaster, including garnering the support of his wife, a process that a friend of his refers to as “SPU’s” – Spousal Permission Units. Out of the original podcast came Pseudopod, a horror fiction podcast, and PodCastle, which is a fantasy fiction podcast. Steve describes the business model that has successfully supported the shows, while paying contributing authors for their stories. His podcasts are free to subscribers, supported by listener donations and sponsorships. Steve talks about licensing rights and the benefit of added exposure for up and coming authors and new books from seasoned authors. He shares how he initially worked his audience to build listenership.  His listenership grew from 100 listeners for the first show to an audience in the mid-30,000s. The best method Steve found for growing the podcast has been engagement in communities that already care about this genre. He attended science fiction conventions, handing out business cards and networking with other writers and fans. Though he advertises on Audible.com, Steve feels word of mouth is still the best advertisement.  Steve and Jason also discuss some of the biggest challenges, particularly overcoming personal perfectionism and maintaining support. Steve has since turned over the running of the podcasts to his dedicated staff, but wants the podcasts to continue because he feels it’s a matter of karma. His group is doing it for the community. “This fiction matters. This literature matters. In a world where things are changing so fast …we need to have active imaginations to learn to cope with this world,” Steve expresses, conveying the heart and soul that has gone into the creation and continuation of the programs. This sentiment has encouraged a large and loyal listening audience and a consistent flow of monetary support that allows the company to continue bringing the best listening experience to its followers.

SOW 65 – Doing the Right Thing is Good Business with Jason Niedle | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:11

(http://www.speakingofwealth.com/wp-content/uploads/rightthing.jpg)Ethos:  the distinguishing character, sentiment, moral nature, or guiding beliefs of a person, group or institution (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). In today’s world of corruption and greed, it has become of the utmost importance for businesses to create trust and make a positive impact on consumers. More and more people are taking an interest in products and services that are good for the planet and good for mankind. Jason Hartman interviews his long-time friend and Tethos founder, Jason Niedle about creating positive marketing and communication strategies combined with a healthy ethos to build trust and produce results that make a positive impact on the world. Listen at: www.SpeakingofWealth.com (www.SpeakingofWealth.com). The two Jason’s discuss high- and low-tech options to market businesses. Of course, the internet provides many high tech options, many practical and creative applications, to promote products and services to the world. Jason Niedle suggests ways to use low-tech options to market a business, such as good old-fashioned calendars, which he refers to as old school viral marketing.  This approach can be tailored to specific niches, providing important dates or events for a specific market. He encourages being a giver versus a taker, with a win-win mindset. He also reminds us that, because of the internet, anything we do today will still be around 5 and 10 years down the road, emphasizing the importance of business and marketing integrity, having an ethos of goodwill. In Jason Niedle's over 20+ years helping clients visually communicate, he is responsible for several thousand book designs, hundreds of calendars, countless corporate brands and websites, and has earned over 50 design and photography awards. He is both creative and logical: from leading the design of a one million man-hour project that is intended to last more than 10,000 years; to leading large groups of highly successful entrepreneurs.  Along the way, Jason has performed at Carnegie Hall, climbed Africa's tallest mountain, and re-met a childhood friend ... only to discover that she had been his soulmate the whole time, unknown. They recently married -- in four culturally authentic ceremonies in four weeks on four continents in a "Wedding World Tour" -- a simple idea that not only made him an official member of Kenya's famed Maasai tribe, but also led to their upcoming book on how anyone can create better relationships. Jason is passionate about ideas that change the world, and recently founded Tethos Marketing in order to combine his love of visual communications with his passion for helping others. Their first client was Sir Richard Branson's charity Virgin Unite, and Tethos helped Virgin raise nearly $500k in one night. Jason believes that the only types of arrangements that we should chose are those which are win/win/win: where we can forward our personal goals, serve the goals of his partners, and at the same time help someone else. --

(http://www.speakingofwealth.com/wp-content/uploads/drink.jpg)On this episode, Jason Hartman interviews host of 10 Drink Minimum Chris Burnett about his podcast experiences. Several years ago, Chris began listening to podcasts, some well done, some not so great, and got the idea that if they could do it, so could he. He talked two of his friends into co-hosting the podcast with him and over 300 episodes and six years later, 10 Drink Minimum is still bringing a different take on pop culture, sports, anything in life. Listen at:  www.SpeakingofWealth.com. In addition to an audio podcast available on iTunes, Chris and co-host Billy host a live video show through UStream during which they take live calls. They sample microbrews on their show and receive all sorts of interesting things in the mail from all over the world, including recording equipment! Chris talks about how this hobby has begun opening other doors, but he keeps everything in perspective. He relies less on statistics and more on feedback from fans. Chris’ advice is to get the best audio quality possible, and don’t be afraid to get in front of the camera to do live streaming. “Just have fun with it,” Chris encourages. Chris grew up in Eastern New Mexico. He is a computer technician by day. He began podcasting six years ago, moving the podcast up to Albuquerque five years ago. He has been doing the podcast out of his house in Old Town, Albuquerque ever since. It is a comedy show on anything pop culture with a dedicated following.
