Progressive Parenting

Babies are born with urgent and intense needs and depend completely on others to meet them. Nurturing touch helps meet a baby's need for physical contact, affection, security, stimulation and movement. Parents who choose a nurturing approach to physical interactions with their children promote development of healthy attachments. Even as children get older their need to stay connected through touch remains strong. I will be talking with Janet Jendron, President of the Board of Directors, she has been a long-time supporter of API. She served for eleven years on the LLLI Board of Directors and many years on the LLLI Alumnae Association Council. Janet has also served on numerous other non-profit Boards, including church-related and wish granting organizations. She has written articles and spoken at conferences throughout the United States on a wide variety of issues related to her non-profit and paid work. She is the mother of four children ages 25 to 33 

Dr.Marsden Wagner will be our very special guest on Progressive Parenting. We will be discussing the safety of home birth, and informed choice. He spent 15 years Director, Women's and Children's Health, World Health Organization (responsible for Women's and Children's Health in 45 industrialized countries). He's been in many documentaries including, PREGNANT IN AMERICA, THE BUSINESS OF BEING BORN, and ORGASMIC BIRTH. He's also the author of BORN IN THE USA:How a Broken Maternity System Must Be Fixed to Put Women and Children First. I am so excited to have him on the show as he is an inspiration to myself and so many other mother and baby advocates. It is the foundation of developing a secure attachment relationship with your children. Our guest this week is Lu Hanessian. Lu is the author of acclaimed book “Let the Baby Drive: Navigating the Road of New Motherhood” (2004), an award-winning journalist, former NBC anchor/host (“Real Life”; “Unsolved Mysteries”) and Discovery Health Channel host of “Make Room for Baby,” parent educator and national speaker. For five years, she hosted The Science Show, syndicated in 110 countries.

Attachment Parenting International (API) is a wonderful organization that advocates on the behalf of children and parents everywhere. For the next eight weeks we will be looking at each of API's eight principles.  This week, or week one, is a look at Principle 1; Prepare Yourself for Pregnancy, Birth, and Parenting. Our guests are the founders of API, Barbara Nicholson and Lysa Parker.

Mary Jackson is our guest tonight. We will be discussing how we are born and what it means. Birth trauma, unnecesareans, peaceful even orgasmic births. How do they effect us? How do we have the birth we want, how do we avoid the ones we don't.  Mary Jackson is the mother of 2 children who were born at home with midwives, has been married since 1987 and has been in 9 books and 5 movies. Mary has been a home birth Midwife since 1975. She has attended over 2000 births in the Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Ojai, California areas. she attended 63 consecutive births at home with no transfers from home to hospital, all labors less than 14 hours except 3, all babies nursing and no circumcisions.

Tonights show will be full of passionate people working towards things they believe in. At the top of the hour we will be joined by Lloyd Schofield, now famous for introducing the anti-circumcision bill in San Francisco.  Later in the show I will be speaking to a rep. from WE ARE ALL HABIBA. Tonight I will be talking to Jennifer Rue McLellan of Plus Size Mommy Memoirs Blog, & Plus Size Doula Connections. Plus size pregnant women were the topic of multiple news articles last week, including OB-GYNs in Florida refusing to work with larger women, and plus size women having more “necessary” interventions during birth. Tonight we will be discussing the TRUTH about Plus Size Birth! 

In this last chapter we hear the second half of the radio program Birth. A documentary about the practices and perceptions of birth in America. Starting with early perceptions, we move through the process of birth beginning before labor, continuing during labor, and following the actual event. With a multiplicity of voices woven with sound we examine the process of birth from an emotional, physical and philosophical perspective. Later in our program we will be joined by Alyse and John and hear their birth story. We've followed them through their last few weeks of pregnancy. Their baby was born last week! We will get the low down on birth in a hospital by a couple who still has the memory fresh in their mind. We will learn about the realities of hospital protocol and how parents can fight for what they want/need. As their doula this is an exciting opportunity to learn. As a person this is an honor. 

During tonights show we listen to BIRTH: A one-hour documentary about the practices and perceptions of birth in America. Last week we talked to Alyse and John, an expectant couple, (pregnant with their first baby) about what it means to hire a Doula. Why did they do it? How was it going so far? Were they teased about it? Since then Alyse found she was dilated 1cm and 30% effaced and has been having Braxton Hicks for days now. If they haven't had their baby yet we will talk about the realities of early labor! Using the rebozo in early labor and more! This is the real deal baby! Join us! 

We are not sure if this is a radio first, but it is definitely a first for us. This is the first installment of a three week series covering the last weeks of pregnancy for first time parents.  Host, Gena Kirby, who is also a Doula, will share (over the air) what actually happens between a pregnant couple and the guardian of their journey.  This is reality radio at it's best!  Make sure you listen to the show live and call in with the questions you would have if you were in their situation. In the third installment (if baby cooperates) we will be discussing the birth and how these new parents feel about their experience. 

My guest on tonights show will be Kaitlin Rose Parmenter of  Bring Birth Home. BBH is a great resource for parents wanting to learn more about  their options outside a hospital or birth center. Hospital birth is fairly new to us, as far as the history of man is concerned. To put this in perspective name the first US president who was born in a hospital. More and more women are choosing to have their babies at home. Later in the show we are joined by Mrs. Birth Without Fear!
