 Let's Keep It Legal | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 52:56

There are so many legal requirements for starting an online business–is it even worth the effort? That’s what one of my students asked me last week. So I decided to get an attorney to answer. But not just any attorney–you’re gonna love this guy! To help you turn these ideas into action, click here to download this week’s free “key ideas” Worksheet. Today you’re going to learn… Why businesses need to get their agreements in writing. Why businesses need to have a strategy for their “legal stuff.” The mistakes businesses make that can sink their brands. The legal mistakes business make with social media. Show Sponsor: Are you curious to know how I created a million-dollar writing business without being famous or having a New York Times bestseller? Would you be interested in knowing how YOU can duplicate what I did–only faster and while avoiding all the mistakes I made? I’ve learned a few things about running a profitable writing business and I want to share them with you. That’s why I’m hosting a FREE masterclass: “The 3 Simple Secrets Of Building A Profitable Copywriting Business.” Register for free at RayEdwards.com/3secrets Ray’s Tip of the Week: (2:25) This week I want to tell you about a new tool I’ve been using to create my own sparkling water instead of buying TONS of sparkling bottled water. Tune in to find out my favorite new “drink maker” tool. Spiritual Foundations: (3:55) Do you pray for your business? Is that a selfish practice? I can’t find any evidence of this in the Bible. But God does talk about worry.  Tune in to discover… What the Apostle Peter had to say about worry. He made it clear what God will do with all our worries–if we let Him. The magic that often happens when we choose to pray despite our worries. Even though God already knows how we feel, He doesn’t want us to be shy and He often rewards us with this blessing while we’re in the act of praying. How to build your faith and in God and how to apply His power in your business. You can get started with a simple daily task that works well in tandem with your daily prayers. Feature Presentation: Bobby Klinck is not your typical lawyer. Sure, he went to Harvard Law School. But he’s not a stuffy curmudgeon. He’s a fully-fledged online entrepreneur who understands our kinds of businesses. Better still, he tells funny stories, makes fun of lawyers, tells “dad jokes,” uses pop-culture references, and even sneaks in the occasional poop emoji. It’s not that he doesn’t think the “legal stuff” if serious. He just figures that having fun with it all makes it less daunting for entrepreneurs. And he’s right! Tune in to discover… (8:35) Why Bobby is “trying to give up” his regular law practice like a bad habit. How he got his law practice started almost by mistake and why he’s now moving 100% into the online space. (10:40) How Bobby learned to network without networking. The surprising answer he gave to his life-coach that really pushed him to become a full online entrepreneur. (13:25) How failing in his first online course launch got him hooked on online marketing. Now he’s an addict, even though he lost thousands in wasted Facebook ads on that launch and the only customer who bought refunded on day 29 of the 30-day refund period. (18:30) Why taking a little time at the start of your business to get the “legal stuff” set up correctly can save you massive headaches down the road. Even though lawyers are often a pain to work with, they do play an important role in helping you stay out of trouble. (19:35) Why relying on a faceless attorney service like Legal Zoom is a big mistake. But only relying on your friendly neighborhood attorney isn’t enough either. You’ve gotta find a specialist who knows how your style of business really works. (22:40) Should you be a sole proprietorship, an LLC, an S-corp, a C-corp? Why getting this right from the start saves you all kinds of time and money. (24:30) Which type of business you should have if you have hired help, like a virtual assistant or a social media manager. If you don’t have this type of business set up, you’re not fully protected. (29:40) Why so many people think getting into online business is as simple as turning your computer into an ATM. There’s a whole lot more to it, and getting your business entity set up correctly is a better investment than buying all those online courses. (31:05) How many rookie entrepreneurs put the cart before the horse. Why trying to harvest the grain before planting the seeds doesn’t work. (33:15) The 3 policies every online entrepreneur should have on their website to protect themselves. It’s the boring lawyer stuff, but without it, you’re putting yourself at risk. (See this week’s worksheet). (39:50) The 3 practices every online entrepreneur should get in the habit of doing, no matter what. Lawyers thrive on uncertainty and these practices keep you covered. (48:00) How Bobby has moved from “no-name” lawyer to super-successful online entrepreneur. In just the past year his income has more than doubled and there’s no end in sight to his growth.  “Spiderman’s Marketing Lessons” - with Mike Kim | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 58:36

This week I welcome my friend and former student Mike Kim to the show. He’s an amazing marketing strategist, consultant, and copywriter. His podcast, “Brand You podcast” is the #1 podcast on personal branding according to Apple.  Mike worked for years as the CMO of a big-time company before building his personal brand. One of his current marketing clients is none other than John Maxwell. We’ve prepared a FREE worksheet for this week’s show to help you apply Mike’s suggestions and get started with your own personal brand. You can download it at RayEdwards.com/388. Feature Presentation: Tune in to our off-the-cuff conversation to discover… (1:32) How my well-intentioned yet dismal “flop” of a marketing contest helped get Mike on my radar. If it hadn’t been for that failure, we might never have met. (3:32) The secret to avoiding super awkward icebreaker conversations with your favorite guru or expert. It’s the best way to get to know them before you actually meet in real life. (4:30) Mike’s “introvert” secret to leveraging and mining relationships. This unique superpower of his is one of the biggest reasons for his remarkable success. (6:45) Which artistic career Mike and I both dreamed about when we were kids. Mike even got the attention and some helpful tips from one of the most famous practitioners of this art form. (10:02) The “Spider-Man” relationship strategy Mike’s been cultivating since childhood. How it’s helped him turn online business acquaintances into best friends. (14:35) How falling asleep during church turned into a full-time songwriting career in his early 20s. The nagging question that took Mike from adolescence to a music ministry, and eventually to a career in marketing. (20:06) How being worn out from life on the road led Mike to become one of the top experts in personal branding in 4 short years. It all started with a simple habit which became the hinge to opening doors all over the industry. (23:05) The huge difference in how people in their 20s and people and 40s define a “personal brand.” Why Mike started to separate and re-categorize “influencers” vs “thought leaders.” (27:10) Who should build a personality brand and who should be an influencer. Mike describes what he calls “the Holy Trinity of content” and how using them as the 3 legs of the platform stool is the best way to give substance to your brand. (32:45) Why focusing on looking for and finding common ground with people is one of the best ways to build your personality brand. This works for all types of businesses, even the ones that seem boring or ordinary like the neighborhood furniture store. (36:55) The Wikipedia test Mike uses when consulting hyper-polished, veneered, corporate marketing teams to help them realize why personality brands are so powerful. I bet this test works on you too. It worked on me! (38:30) How the stocker in all of us contradicts our fear of posting something personal social media because it might be “off brand.” Mike calls us all out and shows the paradoxical principle of branding we need to learn from our actual online behavior. (41:34) The easiest way to help people make the decision whether or not to follow you online. It takes courage, but it’s by far the best way to build your personal brand and a loyal tribe of hungry fans and followers. (43:40) Mike’s best up-to-date advice about how to get started with your personal brand. There’s one crucial practice you must adopt. It’s the biggest hurdle for most people. But it provides an easy way to overcome the challenge and get started today. (48:05) The 11th commandment, coined by Mike, that got him started with the discipline of building his personal brand. But it’s not a “quick” fix. It’s a year-by-year process he’s been using since 2014 to get where he is now.   Resources: To learn more about Mike and follow what he’s doing, visit MikeKim.com. To learn more, listen to the podcast and then go to RayEdwards.com/tribe Spiritual Foundations: I see posts on social media asking that the 10 Commandments be re-posted in our courthouses and schools. I think we should consider a different scriptural passage to post in these important places. It’s one of the most powerful teachings ever. Listen in to find out which scripture it is and why I think it would make the world a better place. Feature Presentation: I welcome #1 bestseller, speaker, teacher, and co-worker to Dave Ramsey, Chris Hogan. In our conversation, you’ll discover… (2:40) The secret to his incredible success in life and business. It started with his grade school teachers and coaches and continues into his work today. (3:20) Why Chris feels it’s so important to help as many people as he can. Unlike many “big name” influencers, he gives credit where credit is due and leads with one of my favorite attributes. In his opinion, any successful person who ignores this attribute is totally delusional. (4:20) The one thing many people consider a weakness that could be the most important element in your personal development if you’ll let it. It gives you a foundation and frame of reference you can’t get in any other way. (6:01) What self-awareness, even if you’re incredibly successful, can do to keep you grounded and moving forward in the face of challenge. It’s the main reason I belong to a mastermind where I am the least successful member of the group. (7:05) How Chris went from humble circumstances growing up with a single mom in Kentucky, to where he is now. His new book teaches how the American Dream is not dead and how it’s alive to anyone who’s willing to grab onto it and do the work. (9:02) Chris’s definition of a “millionaire.” Hint: it’s not what you think. But, you can use Chris’s free tool on his website to see how close you are to being an every-day millionaire. (11:10) Why so many wealthy people have amazing stories of overcoming HUGE obstacles in their lives. And Chris doesn’t think it’s a coincidence. Rather, it’s a key variable in the success equation. (12:45) 4 things all people who conquer big challenges have in common. Why almost everyone who faces the same challenges without these 4 things almost always crack under the pressure. (16:05) The biggest myth Chris busts in his new book. It explains why most people are dead wrong about where the majority of American’s wealth comes from. (18:28) What Chris’s book will do for you that no other book can. One of the several unique tools he provides is a list of attributes the 10,000 millionaires he and his team studied have in common. (21:45) The one thing Chris want you to know above all others. Whether you come from poverty or riches, success or failure, you can put his advice to the test and have amazing results!  Interview with Stu McLaren | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:11

Are you interested in having guaranteed money in the bank every month? Then this week’s podcast is for you! I’m talking with my friend Stu McLaren, the founder of TribeWorkshop.com. Stu has become famous by helping entrepreneurs build low stress, high-profit businesses using recurring revenue. How does that sound? How would it feel to start every month with money in the bank and never wonder where your next client is going to come from? Click here to download or listen to this episode now. Feature Presentation: In our discussion about what Stu calls the “recurring revolution,” you’ll discover… (0:55) The under-the-radar “subscription economy” movement being used by big companies, like Amazon, Apple, and Netflix. And it’s not just internet companies, even Walmart and Burger King are doing this. (2:15) The multi-hundred-billion dollar industry that when coupled with the subscription consumer stores is making a perfect storm for everyday businesses. Any type of business can benefit from this perfect storm if they see the line in the sand and have the courage to forge ahead in this new and exciting way of doing business. (3:25) The simple secret to why people stay in a membership or subscription service. As long as you’re doing this one thing, they’ll stay for years and years. (5:20) How a massage therapist went from constantly worrying about her sporadic income to being totally confident in her stable recurring-revenue business. All it took was 17 members at her initial launch to give her the peace of mind she craved. (7:10) The simple genius of how a shopping mall fast-food chain turned their uncertain cashflow model into solid, predictable, member-pleasing profits. The customers are thrilled to get more for less and the owner knows exactly how much money is coming in before the month even gets started. Everybody wins! (9:45) Why memberships and subscription services are the future of business as we know it. Every business owner needs to think about implementing a membership element because people are more primed and trusting of these models than ever before. (12:20) Why the glut of free information on the internet is making it harder for people to succeed in online learning. It sounds counterintuitive, but this is the reason why now is the perfect time to start a membership site. (14:30) How recurring revenue helps business owners create better products. Rather than being one more “me-too” product, when you create a membership site, you’ll have more time to make your product stand out ahead of all the rest in your category. (17:05) The incredible story of how one of Stu’s students turned an “eyelash” business into a $30,000 per month revenue stream. If something as simple as eyelashes can make that kind of money, what can it do for you? (20:00) How running a membership is not about the money, but what the money can allow you and your family do that fulfills you in a way you’ve never been fulfilled before. Whether it’s fixing your health or adopting a child, recurring revenue truly brings freedom in a way most other business models can never achieve. (22:35)  A counter-intuitive way to launch your membership quickly and in a way that will set you up for success in the long term. It goes against the grain of most content creators, but it’s one of the most important keys to membership site success. (25:00) How a coffee shop (like, maybe Revel77), or other brick and mortar operation,  can implement a membership model successfully. Stu rattles off several excellent ideas that really got our wheels and apply not only to coffee shops, but to car washes, breweries, and other local businesses that want to build loyalty. We’re gonna do this! (31:35) The “founding member script” one of Stu’s students used to quick-launch her fertility membership site to her list of 326 people. It made $5,024 in the first 24 hours. And over the past year, it’s exploded! (34:05) How simple it is to set up the technology for your membership site. It’s never been easier than today to do this with many different kinds of solutions. And Stu gives a key insight into why the technology should never hold you back. (40:42) The difference between front-end and back-end membership site positioning and how much you can charge for each of these. It depends on the kind of market you’re in and the degree of transformation you can offer. (43:20) How to decide if you have an idea that will work as a membership site. It’s one of the 3 parts of Stu’s free Tribe Workshop that gives you clarity and an actual score regarding the quality of your idea and whether or not you’re set up to succeed in a recurring revenue business. The workshop starts on April 25, 2019! (47:10) How a 1st and 2nd-grade teacher turned her “teachers aid” membership into a million dollar a year business. Her story proves you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to make this work. (48:50) The most important business asset in any niche or industry and why Stu goes all in to maximize its power. He believes in it so much that he started a 2nd podcast all about this one thing. (53:15) Why making money is one of the best ways to make an impact in the world. Find out what Stu and his wife do with their money to make a huge difference in the lives of thousands of underprivileged children. Spiritual Foundations: Today on “Spiritual Foundations” I want to tell you the story of a good Christian woman who’s struggling to run her business. I’ll tell you about… (2:35) How a simple verse in 1st Chronicles, chapter 4 sparked a huge debate and why I think this verse is key to every Christian’s business success. There’s hard evidence in this verse that demonstrates how God actually does answer these kinds of prayers. Ray's Tip Of The Week I want to tell you about one of my favorite apps. It helps you… (4:35) Quickly and easily unclutter your electronic devices of duplicate photos and files. To top it all off, it’s very inexpensive. Check it out at … https://macpaw.com/gemini Episode Sponsor: Are you stuck in a humiliating, soul-sucking job? I’ve had the privilege of helping a small group of remarkable people transition from a job they hate to a fulfilling and financially rewarding career. For example… Dr. Douglas Pew, a composer and conductor whose music was performed at the Kennedy Center. He’s well on his way to becoming an A-list copywriter. Mike Kim, the branding expert who turned the company he worked for completely around, made it prosperous, then started his own company, a hit podcast, and now runs marketing for John Maxwell’s team. Sara Anna Powers, who left her six-figure job as an attorney and started her own freelance writing practice. She runs her own live boot camps and high-end coaching programs and is set up for her first million dollar year! There’s one thing these 3 real writers have in common. They are all graduates of my Certified Copywriter Program. If you’re reading to trade your boring 9 to 5 straightjacket job for a life you love, this could be the new beginning you've been hoping for. 3 good reasons to become a Ray Edwards Certified Copywriter. Establish your credibility. It’s hard to stand out in today’s market as a copywriter. Borrow my credibility and my reputation when you’re certified by me. I put my name under yours. Get more leads. The toughest part of this business is getting leads. We get lots and can’t handle them all. Would you like to get high quality leads from us? Multiply your income instead of growing your copywriting business incrementally. Why not grow exponentially? Don’t just add your income, multiply it. Go to RayTraining.com to learn more. Feature Presentation: Mike Stelzner is the founder of Social Media Examiner, Social Media Marketing World, the Social Media Marketing Podcast, and the Social Media Marketing Society. And he’s one of my best friends. In my conversation with Mike, you’ll discover… (7:50) What Mike studied in college and grad school that set him up perfectly as a podcaster, video presenter, and copywriter. He never planned to do what he’s doing now, but looking back, his college years set the stage perfectly for his current career. (8:25) How his definition of the word “translation” got him started as a copywriter. Without this full-time position at a hundred-million-dollar high tech company while still in college, he may never have figured out how to write great copy. (10:15) Why FedEx hired Mike to write an old-school marketing piece when they started their international transit from China. This piece of marketing was so valuable it even convinced Apple Computers to start using the new FedEx overnight service for electronics. (12:40) The literally “larger than life” client Mike and I both worked for on separate occasions. Hear the story of how these copywriting opportunities came from our mutual friend Amy Porterfield who worked for this famous motivational speaker at the time. (14:40) How Mike made the transition from being THE “white papers” copywriter in many people’s minds to starting what is now the most important social media marketing company in the world. Leaving behind a list of 20,000 subscribers was a big risk, but it paid off handsomely. (16:20) The clever “build a movement” strategy Mike used to grow an initial following of 10,000 people before ever releasing a single product for sale. And when they did start selling products 6 months later, it led them to earn over $2,000,000 in their first year. (19:30) Why now, more than ever, people need to understand how to persuade with the written word. Why social media marketing increases the need for good copywriting and how Mike uses it every day in his business. (24:25) The importance of creating free content that’s so valuable people would happily pay for it. This one strategy has made all the difference in Mike’s business and now brings in, on average, 1,000 new subscribers per day. (27:00) The single reason people trust Mike’s company and faithfully buy from them. It’s a counterintuitive strategy that most companies are too afraid to deploy. (31:15) The #1 mistake most social media marketers make when it comes to writing their copy. It’s incredibly easy to fix, but most social media marketers don’t realize how much this mistake hurts their integrity and don’t take the time to fix it. (32:35) Why “burying the lead” in Mike’s emails works wonders despite being a cardinal sin of copywriting. It’s a clever tactic that gets more of his reader’s eyes on more of his content regularly. (34:45) How to write for skimmers so they still get the important parts of the message in your emails or social posts. With just a few simple formatting tweaks, almost any piece of copy becomes easier to understand for the skimmers (which is most people). (37:05) Two free tools any copywriter can use to make great looking graphics. Including graphics in your copy is something many copywriters don’t think about, to their cost. (40:02) How to get started learning social media marketing the right way. The easy to use, weekly “tune-in-now” way to get started today. (44:45) How to play the long game in internet business and how doing so pays enormous dividends down the road. Most people think it’s too much work, but this particular long game is amazingly fruitful. (47:10) The secret equation Mike developed to create explosive growth in his business. He calls it the “elevation principle” and it’s so easy, anyone can use it at any stage of their business journey. (51:35) The “good enough” error so many marketers make. Are you making this mistake? How long are you willing to put up with that?  From Comedian To Copywriter- Interview With Kevin Rogers | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:54

Over the past few weeks, we’ve had a “shake-up” on the show. We had several weeks in a row of freewheeling discussion with two of my assistants, Tiffany and Adrian, and my son, Sean. To please the long-time listeners, some of whom aren’t thrilled with this new style of episode, we’ve decided to launch a second podcast. That way, if you want to tune into the freewheeling silly stuff, you can do that. And if you want to hear the more serious business and copywriting stuff, you can do that too. Stay tuned over the next few weeks to learn more about the new podcast. Click here to download or listen to this episode now. Spiritual Foundations: Today on Spiritual Foundations I discuss… (1:55) Is it wrong to pray for your business? Many Christians I know think it’s greedy and selfish to ask God for material gain. Here’s what Peter has to say about it. (2:40) Why prayers about our worry and our prosperity change us. This change of perspective helps us see how God can communicate to us his plans for our prosperity in business. (3:10) A powerful method for building your faith and seeing more answers to your prayers. This works. I’m absolutely sure of it! Ray's Tip Of The Week This week I want to tell you about Cardflow Plus. (3:30) It’s an iPad app that’s helping me storyboard my videos. I like doing this on paper, but when that’s not an option, this app is saving the day. (3:55) It’s like a stack of virtual 3×5 index cards you can use for speeches or book outlines.
