SFMOMA Artcasts

Summary: Welcome to SFMOMA Artcasts, the Museum’s podcast series. Each month, we bring you closer to the voices and sounds of artists, writers, curators, musicians, and visitors as they respond to exhibitions and artworks on view at SFMOMA. Each installment has two parts: an audiozine filled with a variety of short features related to works on view and a tour for a current exhibition meant to be used in the galleries.

SFMOMA Artcasts: Lebbeus Woods: April 2013 (enhanced) | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 10:08

Our April Artcast features three distinct voices speaking about the work of architect Lebbeus Woods: Los Angeles-based architect Thom Mayne; science fiction scholar and Bay Area artist Anthony Discenza; and Woods himself, in audio from a lecture he gave at the California College of the Arts in 2006. Sadly, Woods passed away last year, but his vast and innovative body of work continues to shape the field of architecture. An exhibition of his drawings and models will be on view at SFMOMA through June 2, 2013. Each SFMOMA Artcast brings you illuminating audio and video interviews with artists, curators, and visitors as they respond to the works on view and in the museum's collection.

Next up, we present an interview conducted in South Africa in 2011 in which photographer Zanele Muholi explains her series "Faces and Phases," a project that gives a visual identity and documented history to queer blacks in that country. Wrapping up the episode, SFMOMA curator Dominic Willsdon talks about a recent research trip to South Africa and the upcoming exhibition "Public Intimacy," which will be on view at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in February 2014.  SFMOMA Artcasts: Johns and DeFeo: December 2012 (no images) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14:22

Our December Artcast focuses intensely on the careers of Jasper Johns and Jay DeFeo. In 1959 both artists were included in the exhibition "Sixteen Americans" at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Now, in 2012, their work is joined once again in two parallel exhibitions at SFMOMA, on view through February 3, 2013. The exhibitions "Jasper Johns: Seeing with the Mind's Eye" and "Jay DeFeo: A Retrospective" chronicle each artist's development and present the arc of their varied careers. In this episode we explore similarities between these artists by looking carefully at the symbols and materials each of them employed over the years. Music in this episode is by the Studio 13 Jass Band with Wally Hedricks, Jay DeFeo's former husband, on the banjo. Each SFMOMA Artcast brings you illuminating audio and video interviews with artists, curators, and visitors as they respond to the works on view and in the museum's collection.

SFMOMA Artcasts: September 2012: Identity and Performance (no images) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Our September Artcast focuses on two exhibitions: "Cindy Sherman" and "Stage Presence: Theatricality in Art and Media." First, artist Cindy Sherman talks with her friend, the filmmaker John Waters, about using herself as a model and describes the way she creates the characters in her photographs. Next, curator Frank Smigiel introduces the live performance series he organized in conjunction with "Stage Presence." This episode also includes a preview of the final event in the series: Rashaad Newsome's "Shade Compositions," which will take place in full on October 8 in SFMOMA's Wattis Theater. We wrap up with interviews with two of the artists involved in "Stage Presence": AA Bronson, formerly of the Canadian artist collective General Idea, and Bay Area artist Tucker Nichols, who designed the theater setting for the "Stage Presence" performance series. Each SFMOMA Artcast brings you illuminating audio and video interviews with artists, curators, and visitors as they respond to the works on view and in the museum's collection.

 SFMOMA Artcasts: June 2012: Game-changers (no images) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:48

In this episode we'll examine three game-changers -- an exhibition, an artist, and a visionary thinker -- that have fed the culture of experimentation in the Bay Area. First we'll hear from Erica Gangsei and Sam Lavigne about the exhibition "ArtGameLab," a show curated by Gangsei that provides visitors with games to play within the museum's galleries. Next, curator Gary Garrels discusses the sculpture "Portrait of George (Moscone)" by Robert Arneson. The once-scandalous bust, commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission, was recently acquired by SFMOMA, finding a permanent home in the city that rejected it shortly after it was completed in 1981. Finally, we end this episode with a segment on the exhibition "The Utopian Impulse: Buckminster Fuller and the Bay Area" in which curator Jennifer Dunlop Fletcher and filmmaker Sam Green discuss Fuller's legacy as a design revolutionary and explore his ties to the Bay Area. Each SFMOMA Artcast brings you illuminating audio and video interviews with artists, curators, and visitors as they respond to the works on view and in the museum's collection.

SFMOMA Artcasts: March 2012: Observers and the observed (no images) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:02

In this episode we hear three artists discuss the role of observation in their work. First, Dora García and two of her volunteer collaborators discuss the experience of watching museum visitors via her interactive installation Instant Narrative. Next, Trevor Paglen describes his approach to visualizing invisible landscapes. In our last segment we hear from Rineke Dijkstra and one of her portrait subjects, Almerisa, whom she has been photographing for eighteen years. The very different results achieved by these artists' methods answer the same basic question: how do people react under a watchful eye? Each SFMOMA Artcast brings you illuminating audio and video interviews with artists, curators, and visitors as they respond to the works on view and in the museum's collection.
